The difference is that if all commieblocks looked like that the living situation in eastern europe would be much better. And the quality is probably much better.

Hey, these commieblocks don't look that bad; buildings seem to be in good conditions, most cars are new (so they are not that poor); in Paris, Lisboa or Barcelona they wouldn't be better (even worse in some cases).

Yeah I know, but the design is tragic, especially on the banks of the Danube... Those apartmens were built only a few years ago, so its totally unacceptable...

Yeah, i dont know that exact place so I can't judge it. But as CKM said, the quality of the commieblocks is good, there are no cracks in the panels as you see here. Generally I've been to Hungary a few times, (Budapest, Györ, Esztergom) and I don't have a feeling of being in an eastern european country (tidy, renovated centers, small towns don't have big commieblocks). But I haven't seen the whole county so I can't be that specific.

Reconstruction of commie-blocks based on the national budget is underway. In the past two years, several blocks were modernized lead by mainly the local governments of Kaposvár, Szeged, Debrecen and Székesfehérvár (government vs. opposition 2-2  ). Szekesfehérvár and Szeged won funds for renovation of 13000 and 8000 flats as part of a 2 year programme started on 2007.01.01. The "pioneer" of commie-block-reconstruction, Kaposvár isn't far behind, with its 5000 flats. But Kaposvár's programme encloses not only the modernization of the building itself, but its surroundings aswell.

Few photos from the city of Szeged:

Those commieblocks in Budapest don't look that bad, well at least not as bad as most of the ones in Petrzalka district.

One interesting thing I noticed that there are some air conditioning units visible. You never see this on the commieblocks in Slovakia! And it doesn't really get much hotter in Budapest than in Bratislava...

^^ Why? It could get pretty hot in the summer, especially in a concrete building! Air conditioning units are not so expensive any more. You can find units from 10360 SKK ,and don't even have to look hard. No to mention, the possibility of buying it for instalments with a 0% intrest at some places. 864 SKK/month for a year, is almost "nothing" for my/your comfort. U can buy 6 Big Mac meals (don't :) ) a month at your local McDonald's for that amount of money... In my opinion...

Infinite, it is not true, many of flats in Petržalka has AC units, I see a lot of then in my surroundings, but I think it is too expensive.

Well, it might be that there really are some, but I just never noticed. Anyhow, there's definitely not many...

You see the undeniable similarity...?

Now this automaticly raises some questions...

1, Europe's main car manufactors are suing China 24-7, for copying their cars, and actually almost everything. Now in this case, why doesn't China take the necessary steps against this obvious stealing of a thousends of years old blueprint?
2, Slovenia wants to build that new Pyramid, because Poland has already got the Great Wall? Central Europe is redefining the 7 wonders of the Ancient World, what's going to be next? The Colossus of Rhodes/Neum in Croatia? The temple/statue of Gyurcsány in Budapest, after The Statue/Temple of Zeus at Olympia?
3, China built the Great Wall due to defensive reasons... Who is Poland defending Europe from...?

An effective way of treating this problem would be to reeducate them... but, it is not easy to change their way of seeing the world and society. Giving them money only goes to the state account making no sense.

^^ I like these photos! Beautiful view in Zilina and Poprad!!! Fantastic photos!

BTW Marek.kvackaj what was the purpose of that unfinished building on the first photo from Zilina? Are there any plans to consume that brick and concreta structure? I saw several unfinished buildings in the region (especially in Romania)like this one. But from all this building has far the best distribution of space. Even with less imagination It could be used easily... My opinion...

I think that building was planned 20 years ago as a small hospital( we had that kind of unfinished building in my suburb too and now was rebuild for 25 flats)

The problem with modernizing commieblocks is they still retain their monotomy and boxiness. The only way to get rid of the "commieblock problem" once and for all is to destroy them all.

I think after the modernization , or part of the modernazation a proper roof should be built with flats in the attic. Think about it. There are Eu and governmental funds for the renovation of the commie blocks. Only 25, but maximum 30 % is needed from the owners. So for example I - as the representative of a building enterprise - sign a contract with the residents to undertake their complete 30% or half, quarter, third of their share in the modernization programme... It depends on a lot of thing, how frequent the district where, the building is located, how much the flat prices/square-meter in that area, how big is the top of the building, how many residents are there, investmental costs, bribes :) ... etc.. For excange, I would get the permission to build attic-flats, and then sell them. If You are lucky or know people... You could reach that the modernization programme would include the new roof itself. So at least 75% of your investment would be payed with governmental funds. All you would have to do is to work those flats out..

repainting and revitalizations of all commie-blocks in Slovakia is approx. 10 billion dollars...research done last year...so is very costly and EU is not willing pay for that...Czech republic ask Eu too and Eu refuse to pay those costs..

I found very startling statistics (in very different ways) for the Czech Republic and Hungary:

In the Czech Republic, 40% of the population lives in "paneláks":

That is quite a number; much higher than what I expected.

I haven't found statistics for Slovakia, but I suspect it is not too different from the Czech Republic.

I do not have the percentages for population living in "panel houses", but I found an article which states "14 percent of Hungary's 4 million apartments are situated in panel blocks and similar places". This means only 14 percent live in commieblocks? Again, this is quite startling.

On the other side is Paris with all those high rises concetrated into one complex which doesnt interfere to much more valuable "old" architecture and general Baron Haussmann's design of this beautiful city. Urbanism of this city is simply great.
Back to Atamans contribution, I agree. Its quite possible that in future, wont be present architecture in this form considred as valuable as it is now in stance of architecture of 60s 70s and 80s .

Excuse me? Are you saying London has highrises all over? They're also concentrated more or less in two areas, City and Docklands. However, at least City was built up organically as the banking centre of the world. That's the way it should always be - highrises get build in the areas that have a tradition for big business etc. You certainly can't say that about unnatural phenomenons such as La Defense. I definitely prefer London's City over La Defense, but that's of course my opinon. It actually may have also something to do with the fact that I also prefer anglo-saxon liberal way of thinking over french centralism.

podľa posledného sčítania obyvateľov tu trvale býva 599 015 obyvateľov a ďalších niekoľkostotisíc ľudí žije v Bratislave prechodne (študenti, dochádzajúci pracujúci, množstvo domácich a aj zahraničných hostí)
I know exactly what is their source, it's taken from Eurostat Urban Audit 2001

But 599 015 is total resident population of LUZ (Larger Urban Zone), population of Bratislava in 2001 was only 428,672 ppl.

Hungary's largest residental building is the highrise in the city of Pécs.

This commie was built in 1974, and when completed it was the tallest residental building in Central Europe. According to the Guiness book of records, today it is the tallest abandoned building is in Central Europe. It was emptied in 1989 due to vital structural problems.

25 floors and 84 meters (275,6 ft) high
250 apartments

I couldn't really find good photos, so if anyone has, please post them.

Qtya
March 18th, 2007, 02:25 PM
Around 1986. In the 80s they tried to modernize the design of the commie blocks, so the latest commies built in Hungary have a similar look and roof. Even the ten storey ones. Its like the idea of modernizing the good old Trabants when they wanted to give a proper socialist reply to the new western style solutions. Naturally they failed... As always...

^ in late 80's Hungary was like western world for us here. Private enterprise was allowed there so I remember my mom when being in junket in Budapest back then told us there were private shops on the streets and overall it looked much less "grey" than Prague. Hungary was simply more reformed and opened to western world and it's capital compared to our rigid commies. I remember there was famous Queen concert in Budapest as well, something impossible in Prague since western bands were not welcomed here...

Ataman:

Ami a Déli pályaudvart illeti... Nekem gyanús, hogy a választások idején került ki az a nagy plakát a Déli homlokzatára... Azóta viszont "halotti csend és hullaszag" a projekt körül... Én egyébként ide képzeltem a Kormányzati negyedet...

IMO commieblocks are sometimes looking much better than pseudomodern satelite villageses and towns. And the new repainting is sometimes very awful - i dont understand what`s wrong on colors like white or gray.... Fortunately, the age of po "podnikatelske baroko" is already past.. Anyway, its just my oppinion, please dont kill me :)

Ataman

I will have to say that I agree with you, e2ek1el. Although I prefer glass over concrete, people all over the world are still building commieblocks.

Commieblocks are nothing more than communities built according to a masterplan, rather than allowing the community to evolve naturally (as it had happened until recently).

The Romans with their organized cities might have built the first commieblocks, but on a much less grand (and disturbing) scale. :)

The worst places in the world in terms of communities built according to a masterplan are: China, Korea (both North and South), and certain parts of the former U.S.S.R.

Central Europe actually.

Thank you very much for correcting me, but you missed the point. I was refering to the communist-era division into western and eastern blocks, that's why I wrote "eastern" with a small letter. As you probably know, you wouldn't be able to find commieblocks in tiny towns in Austria for example - which is still central Europe by today's division. So saying CE would not illustrate my point.

jazapp
March 28th, 2007, 11:30 AM
As for commieblocks, the worst thing is lack of proportion which, sadly, was common. But sometimes it is just a matter of time to accept things, get used to them and discover their beauty. Some commieblocks have this potential quality (if they last, that is :-)).

Look at these pictures

Jesuit college in Kutná Hora. A part of an UNESCO protected town. But at it' s time nothing more than a baroque utilitary architecture with no real invention, horribly out of scale in environment of a medieval city. Now an organic part and very important monument of Kutná Hora.

Yes, it makes a difference but for example in Tartu(100 000 inh) there are only a few 9 storey commieblock houses, most of them have 5 storeys. In the pictures shown here i can see 9(or 8?)-storey commieblocks in very little towns(<10 000)

You should be happy there are no commie monsters in your country. I think the number of commieblocks in the town is more important than the floor count. I mean there are maybe high commieblocks in quite little towns but there is only five or six so high commieblocks in whole town. It looks strange but communists didn't care about how should our towns look like in the future. It was just cheaper to build five high commieblocks than ten low.
