View Full Version : #299 l Terminal Tower l CLEVELAND l 216m l 52fl
Wu-Gambino June 11th, 2003, 03:58 AM Terminal Tower
Cleveland, USA
HEIGHT: 216m/708 feet
FLOORS: 52 floors
COMPLETION: 1930
ARCHITECT: Graham, Anderson, Probst & White
The Terminal Tower is the "grande dame" of Cleveland skyscrapers and the most significant landmark of downtown Cleveland. When it was built as part of the Van Sweringen Brothers Union Terminal station, it was the tallest building outside of New York City until 1967, when Boston's Prudential Center was built. The related earthmoving required for the Union Terminal complex was the second largest excavation in history after the Panama Canal. The Terminal Tower remains the second tallest building in Cleveland and Ohio.

Quite simply, one of the greatest buildings ever made... the culmination of the beaux-arts style in skyscraper.

Actually... it isn't...
I was just in Cleveland this weekend..
The Terminal Tower looks quite dirty up close... especially the rear of the building... needs a makeover
also to my dismay... the 52nd floor observation deck has been closed since 9/11/01
totally lame!
renell June 17th, 2003, 12:58 PM 8/10 like the top
Wu-Gambino August 8th, 2003, 05:25 PM Who gave it a 3.5?
Roch5220 August 21st, 2003, 12:17 AM 4.0 - don't like the top
looks dirty and not well kepted, maybe its just the photos.
reminds me of the capital building for some reason in Havana.

New Jack City October 6th, 2003, 05:14 PM 8/10...It's a great old classic, but like others pointed out a little too dirty, and the top isn't all that great.

HA HA!
UrbanDesigner October 7th, 2003, 03:35 AM I'm serious. I consider the Terminal Tower one of the quintessential skyscrapers that other towers can only aspire to be.
What's going on in Indy. Y'all should be very proud of the "retail revival" in your downtown, not to mention all the other developments in your city. Kudos to Indianapolis! one of the world's next great cities?
Javier October 11th, 2003, 12:24 AM Looks like a russian building...

airsickpenthousedweller October 23rd, 2003, 08:59 PM I hate these church/scraper combinations.
....no wait: I'd hate them if only I wouldn't have to laugh so much when seeing them.

Liz L October 28th, 2003, 09:17 PM 7.5/10 - The spire, or everything above the first big setback, from what I can see, is well done - it blends its component parts harmoniously, and rises gracefully to the sky.
The problems are with the main mass of the tower - that heavy cornice at the set back seems to kill the height, and, along with the columns supporting arches don't harmonize with the columns supporting pediments of the spire quite as well as they might.
And the tower, while it is slim enough, and not really ugly, is a bit bland. It also seems to illustrate what I see as the main limination of Beaux Arts as applied to skyscrapers - the classical, Greco-Roman style on which Beaux Arts is based is not really vertical, so it can only go so high before looking forced and stretched - after all, how many layers of columns can you pile on top of each other?

GetOnDaTrain October 26th, 2004, 02:50 AM 10/10. Terminal Tower is a classic! Now called Tower City Mall, I think if not mistaken -- and still a hub for the RTA Rapid Transit system underneath it.

Monkey November 14th, 2004, 02:54 AM Oh my God, that is wonderful. Another hidden gem I've discovered on this forum.

Jasonhouse April 12th, 2005, 01:37 AM An absolute classic, and easily Cleveland's most recognized and cherished highrise landmark. One thing of note was the architect's choice to use an older highrise aestetic, instead of seeking out a more 'modern' style for the time... The building's only real detraction IMO, is that the pedestal for the tower is absolutely massive, and is a bit overbearing for the pedestrian.
8.5/10

C-Town July 23rd, 2005, 11:31 PM Living in Cleveland, I've grown up with this tower. It's our landmark and easily one of the most recognizable buildings outside of New York. I've been spending so much time in the city lately (I can unfortunately only visit since I'm going to school in Berea) and I must say that at night it is rare to see a more awe-inspiring sight than Cleveland's public square with the Terminal, Key, and BP towers all lit up along with the 2 canyons created by Euclid and Superior avenues. Cleveland is a gem and everyone from the city needs to show the beauty this city actually has and help get rid of its bad reputation.

Scruffy88 January 1st, 2006, 09:02 PM 8/10 Great building from that era. Stands up well. The top looks like a slightly less attractive version of the Municipal Building in Downtown NYC, albeit a hundred so feet taller. Just needs some cleaning, and repainting and its a national treasure
