So rich european country (Albania), that half of it run away in Serbia in period of just 50 years!? Heh, If people would know that in the year 00' in Skadar(Shkodre) died about 2000 people in local fights between families by the old savage law of Leka Dukadjini from XV century... If anybody understands traditional albanian architecture, he knows that Albanians lived in stone houses like towers (kule) with a livingroom space on the top, because of protecting against other albanian families... Heh, and they say that Serbs hurt them on ocupied Kosovo, but they first have to understand that nobody hurts them more then themselves...

laberia June 24th, 2007, 08:17 PM It really bothers me when people say, especially serbs, that we Albanians are uneducated, or illiterate. Well, look at this cool info:
Literacy:
Albania
definition: age 9 and over can read and write
total population: 98.7%
male: 99.2%
female: 98.3% (2001 census)
Serbia
definition: age 15 and over can read and write
total population: 96.4%
male: 98.9%
female: 94.1% (2003 census)
note: includes Montenegro but excludes Kosovo
Source: CIA - The world Factbook
Now, stop saying that we are illiterate, because you'll look stupid!

Is this a SF forum or something like that? Now, seriously, since Serbs and the rest of Balkan peoples are all partially Illyrians (e.g. have a high percentage of "native Balkan genes") should Serbs start threatening to claim back Skadar (built by medieval Serbian kings btw), Durres and other more worthy Albanian cities? Get a life kid and stop threatening around, it makes you appear dumber than you are.

Absolutly agree...
The fortress was fucked up by Germans in WW2.. they used the towers as magacines for explosive and munition.. when partisans were liberating the town they just blew up the entire thing..
It's still the biggest mediavel fortress in Europe..

Majevčan August 19th, 2007, 01:09 AM ^^I know the story with the germans but I had no clue that this serbian fortress was that big:eek:. Any recent pics with the whole fortress on it? Just a couple of years ago I even didn't know about some serbian fortresses whilst here in Germany they take care of their cultural sights by pumping money into them and promoting them on TV. I wish Serbia had such plans.

Turnovec August 19th, 2007, 04:39 PM ^^ Well see this map (http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/1490/trapezicauz7.jpg) of the urban plan of Tsarevgrad Turnov from medival times. The town had 3 inner fortresses : Tsarevets, Trapezica and Devingrad and a larger outside fortress surrounding those 3 hills. To get the size picture let me tell you that on the smaller hill of Trapezica were located as much as 17 churches and monasteries aside from the living houses and palaces... the outside town had several heighbourhoods - one of them Frankhissar was the one of the foreign traders- jews, dobrovniaks etc... etc. Only Konstantinople at that time was a bigger city and more cosmopolitan in the region. It is no surprise that even your saint Sava was burried in Turnov for several decades until our kings decided to give his remains as present to the serbs. See this photo (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a1/Tsarevets.jpg) - these all hills on it was mediaval Turnovgrad. There is visible only the walls of Tsarevets hill ... the rest walls have only 50cm. or less remains ...

^^ hehe the key word is medevial and there was, and in smederevo it is still present status, meaning it still exsists in this size
Dux Uxorum August 19th, 2007, 06:47 PM Let's be honest and direct here: I remember Turnovec as one of the "nice" BG forumers who cockily and with the high-hat attitude suggested that giving someone else's territory away is a good move, so I think he's the one with the "complex" issues and I have no intentions to be extra nice to him. Smederevo was/is one of ther largest European medieval fortresses of all times, and along with Constantinople the largest fortress when it was built (~ 1430). We are not talking about prettiest, tallest, coolest or whatever, but of the surface and the length of its walls, so deal with it. And, since you were trying to be sarcastic, is not that the very Trnovo (in Serbian) where Bulgarian boyars cried and kept silent as the small unit of Serbian cavalry brought back Queen Ana to the Bulgarian throne?
Here's an excerpt in Serbian about the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Velbuzd 1330: "Razbijenu bugarsku vojsku Srbi su daleko gonili i mnoge sasekli; naročito se u borbi istakao mladi Dušan.

Ventilator_BGD September 10th, 2007, 05:07 PM People here are funny... No dubt that Smederevo fortres is one of the biggest fortreses in europe, but on the straith terrain... Surrely, Belgrade fortress, or its Serbian part was made in the same time, but it was about double bigger, and it was one of the biggest settlements in Balcans... I dont think that we can compare Turnovo and Smederevo, Turnovo was a capital with so many public buildings, and it had linear developement during history. Smederevo lived like a city much shorter period... But Belgrade can be compared with turnovo for example... It was a real capital of that time... i read about the first mechanic clocs in the world made exactly in Belgrade of that time...
Link to the page about Belgrade when it become Serbian capital in 1403 (3d model of the fortress...) : http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=462441
But however, there is no city from continent however big it was on Balcans that can compare to the costal cities from that time of medieval century Serbia... Those cities were on the frontier of civilisations, made between 2, and later 3 cultures: catholic western, ortodox cristian eastern, and otoman islamic... Those cities were on much higher level of civilization progres because of its connections with the most developed cities of that time... Many of them had their own status, about urban developemant, such as Budva, Kotor and Dubrovnik had in XII century... And those cities were very important factor that had very big influence on developement of Serbia.

Lindze November 22nd, 2007, 10:40 PM "You cannot just make one investment and think that the world will come to see it on the next year".
Paul E. Mathews
Canadian Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners Ltd., designer of a number of Olympic and World Championship Alpine competition venues, among which also the forthcoming Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi, Russia, is one of the most renowned companies in the field of mountain design, resort planning and landscape architecture. Now they are looking at the SEE region and Property Xpress could not but get in touch with Mr. Mathews, the company’s President, in order to inquire about their projects in the region.
What is Ecosign’s role in the rehabilitation of Bulgarian Vitosha Mountain? Is the company involved in any projects in Bansko, as has been released earlier this year? How is the work on the initiated by the Serbian government Stara Planina project, which may expand into an international mega-resort, advancing? What will it include and what type of customers is it aimed at? Have Stara Planina’s developers and investors been chosen already? What kind of project is Ecosing working on at the moment in Odessa? How many projects are the Whistler-based designers proceeding on at the moment in Romania? Mr. Mathews answers all these questions in the present interview.
He also reflects on issues such as: Will Vitosha remain number one for the people in Sofia only or it holds potential for attracting a wider spectrum of tourists? What are the issues about Bansko? Why the Sochi region is destined to keep up its attractiveness from tourism point of view for many years after Sochi Winter Olympic Games 2014? Will Ukrainian mountain resorts follow its example? What is that slows down the development of Smotrich and Bystrets? How many years does it take to develop a world class destination from scratch? What problems are famous mountain resorts in Switzerland and France faced with at the moment and what is the solution?
