Its now a Kenyan christmas-new year holiday tradition. Flee from Nairobi and the highlands and head for Mombasa. Guys don't do 'shags' anymore.

Their are many old buidings and dilapilated streets in Mombasa Island and Old Town that seriously needs to be rejuvenated but then the Mombasa suburbs as Nyali and Diani are really catching up so well.^^

^^the last time i checked Mombasa was a head of any Tanzanian city, having said that, the old buildings some of them 400 years are preserved, they are UNESCO site you can not demolish them, btw they contribute the country tourism sector, the only sub Saharan africa that is a head in kenya cities are south africa only, so i rest my case

DBurner Between Nairobi and J'burg their is Harare, Luanda and Maputo which are by all means a tough competition 'infrastructurewise'. But if the current pace of investment and development continues and is marched with prudent management then it should'nt be very far from the top.

I don't get it.I thought the comparison was btn silver/silver not silver/gold i.e just 2nd cities. The thought of another place in kenya giving big, brash Nairobi a tough competition would relieve pop pressure, ensure equitable/balanced dev and forster a culture of competition within which the 2nd cities in Zim and Cameroon seem to be doing.Just because there's old historical structures is no excuse for neglecting them.Ghana has Osu castle,Senegal has slave castles which are really well kept compared to mombasa's old buildings.Old can be made good.
There's something wrong with that approach since it feeds into a lackadaisical attitude.Just mix that lack of zest for better and it feeds into the already slow pace there then you'll have people unwilling/unable to compete.Mombasa's atmosphere can be uninspiring.

The Old Mombasa structures are in serious need of rehab, no doubt about that. But that may not mean that Mombasa cannot take its place among the Crème de la Crème of African Cities. About the arguments on second cities against second cities I thinks it amounts to nothing really. I can tell you with a straighf face that SA's three top cities et al(J'burg, Capetown, Durban..) are far superior than any other competing cities in Subsaharan Africa in terms of GDP, Infrastructure and standard living you name it irrespective of its country's ranking for that reason I do not see why mombasa should not aim for the top if only some things can be changed.

I am not too interested in competition between Dar and Mombasa. We all know that Mombasa has a bigger port and is also more of a resort city than Dar. My consern is the changes that Mombasa has to make to become an 21st century city. The old town is great but conserving the buildings has come at a price, lack of a good road network in the old town is one.
I suggest keeping some parts of the old town but then developing the rest of the city. Mombasa needs a highway that goes around the Island just like other large Island cities have eg Manhattan. Another bridge is needed to connect the city to the mainland and we need more apealing beachfront buildings.

I highly doubt we will ever get to see the old town being demolished. Though I think more towers will rise up around the GPO area. If this happens, the best view of the skyline would be from the Mama Ngina drive or Likoni ferry.

I try to picture glass high rises fronting the recreation area around the drive. Or maybe the skyline with a new suspension bridge to Likoni (if they ever get to0 build it.)

The old town is great but conserving the buildings has come at a price, lack of a good road network in the old town is one.

Another way to promote new infrastructure alongside the old town structures is through zoning. I.e. some of these plots can be put to sell and openned-up to new-willing private investors and government who want to put up infrastructural(Bridge and Highways) and new (building)structures. The unwilling sellers can be mandated to improve their properties in lieu of the(proposed) city-limits zoning rules.

I suggest keeping some parts of the old town but then developing the rest of the city. Mombasa needs a highway that goes around the Island just like other large Island cities have eg Manhattan. Another bridge is needed to connect the city to the mainland and we need more apealing beachfront buildings.

I would set mombasa's model presumption more in the lines of Cape-town(Tourism) and Marrakech/Dubai-(Free-Port) rather than Manhattan/Frankfurt(Office|Financial address). I hope the Free Port plans will be redeemed, the city limits expanded, Mombasa be given a freehold to advertise and market itself globally and encourage modern but low cost housing to cater for growing population within the suburbs.

Guys,Don't ever think of comparing Dar and Mombasa. In TZ everything is concentrated in Dar.Dodoma is nowhere to be found. It's neglected.Actually the major city in TZ is only Dar.In Kenya we have Nairobi the power house of East Africa,Mombasa,Kisumu,Nakuru(which is bigger than Dodoma the capital city of TZ).The Kenyan economy is bigger than TZ one despite Kenya not having more natural resources and Kenya having less population.

Wrong. I guess you haven't travelled much in TZ. Trust me, Arusha and Mwanza can give any Kenyan urban centre (ex-Nairobi) a run for its money.

I don't think the point should be to compete with Tanzania, I like the fact that TZ is developing, their road infrustructure is very good but cities like Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu have more resources and should have metro budgets like other large cities in the world. Decentralizing some responsibilities is good for the country. If this model were applied, then we would have Mombasa and Nairobi competing for business and in the process improving their infrustructure.

Mombasa may be a great vacation city but it has disapointed in many other areas. The so called informal sector should be regulated and taxed so that the infrustructure can be improved. Another problem with Mombasa is the fact that the old buildings have been retained even when they are not historic buildings, the city looks run-down and in need of a major facelift. Nakuru is on the way back and Kisumu seems to have a plan to make itself a viable modern city but Mombasa remains a city with no real direction. I don't mind spending time in the many impressive hotels, restaurants and clubs but the average Mombasan's life can be improved by better planning.

I concur with you man!

They careless abt Mombasa despite being the 2nd CITY....

They have no plan to promote growth of Mombasa....

The CBD is as old as the town itself.. nobody cares..

No International Hotels.... No Major sports facilities.... No international Conferences.... No Major learning institutions.... No state of the art skyscrapers..... No state of the art roads.... the list is endless... all plans and effort belongs to nairobi....

its sad and makes some of us feel no proud of our country....

I believe diversification and competition among cities is the way to go......

Why on earth do you guys want mombasa to have skuscrapers. this is a beautifull city with a lot of character. i prefer they sorted out the streets and made them clean build the skyscrapers on the mainland, make the water front as attractive as miami's and clean up the place. this is all we need for our favourite laid back city. mombassa will never look good with skyscrapers. it might look oppulent but not good.

Mombasa Raha

I dont think u r right bro....

Skyscrapers define skyline which becomes a hallmark of a particular city.....

Mombasa deserves skyscrapers....

The section that is the "old town" should only be maintained, but the other part needs, and I emphasize, urgently needs state of the art medium and high rise structures..... pull down all the congrete jungles that make mombasa look like a section of kibera with shanties...

@ one time Mombasa and DAR were at per.... look what is happening in Dar right now and you will drop your jaw!

Look at other port cities in the world... DURBAN/NEWYORK/DUBAI/ALEXANDRIA and many many more....

Can mombasa challenge any....

Its high time the government stops closing her eyes on Mombasa and revamp the city AMBITIOUSLY!

no international hotels?...anyway, I think its a good thing that some leaders like Najib Balala are looking for ways to invite investors to put up a major conference centre in Mombasa.

I have a hunch Mombasa is about to have a construction boom just like Dar. An American investor plans to set up a major university in Mombasa though I need confirmation on that. I don't know if you have noticed but a chunk of the power projects are situated in Mombasa. This could mean more industries in Mombasa. The roads will come sooner or later. I don't need to mention the port expansion and the railway upgrade, the tourism boom...

Just give it time.:)

Musir has some valid points. Some blame goes to "my region" mentality of politicians and lack of foresight.
However,to drive Musir's point on "competition"home then some blame lies with Mombasa itself.Where's Mombasa's CBD assoc to make the place business and investor friendly/,why are so many buildings neglected-no paint,no repairs. What with reports on tv of madawa za kulevya menace-it'll drive investors away. Why can't the CBD assoc make trips to woo investors, developers and others to Nrb? Also the laid back atmosphere,i hate to say,may come accross as satisfaction with the status quo and no yearning to realize some dreams faster like the do-or-die attitude in Nrb.
Having said that,it is also wrong to have over half of GDP tied to one city and Mombasa provides, growth, balance, competition and magnet for future rural-urban migration.

I share your VIEWZ.... and to add "though its a -possible-far away dream" a road forming a ring round the Island with street lights/palm trees.... a dual carriage from Mariakani cutting across the center all the way to Kikambala, again complemented with street lights and palm trees, should form unmatched ambiance in the EA Coast............

With ambitious plan, YES WE CAN!

Mombasa will only change when the middle class starts demanding more for the taxes they pay. Like many here I was born and raised in Nairobi but I have been to Nakuru and Mombasa along with other regions in the country, my regret is that I have never been to Kisumu but I agree with many of the sentiments expressed here. Mombasa already has tons of visitors so I think a urban development plan needs to be made.
I agree with many that historical Mombasa has to be preserved but we can't have a situation where nothing changes because we want to keep Mombasa stuck in time. The goverment should with imput from historians and local government set-up areas to be preserved and then open up other areas of the Island to modernization. A highway in the lines of the FDR and the Westside highway in Manhattan is something that should be built to make Mombasa a world class city. Another bridge is also needed along with a trolly public transportation system in the lines of Sanfrancisco, these are not expensive solutions but instead common sense ways of increasing revenue in the city.
Consider this a city like Boston built an under-ground road network to decrease trafic in the CBD and NYC has the largest network of subways anywhere. These initiatives were built because they are necessary, you can't have a world class city without taking bold common sense steps, not building it bigger like Dubai but building "it" because it make social and economic sence.

So many african airports have these unpleasant sights just before landing. They let people encrounch airport lands for long and then all of a sudden they tell them within few months they should demolish due to expansion of airport. It costs tax payers money for compensations. Yaani mabanda mengi karibu na runway:ohno: ahhh!

You cant upload your photos directly to Skyscrapercity. You will need to first upload them onto flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com/), imageshack.us (http://imageshack.us/) e.t.c and then post them here as usual using the links.;)

True. But i think it greatly depends on the kind of leadership at the helm more than anything else.

I actually don't mind them, so long one doesn't fall someday.
