Some pics of Kenya's second largest city. Most Mombasa pics are of the old town that has been around for over a century but I will try and get pics of the new modern Mombasa and the international airport that has tons of flights from Europe. Nairobi may have it's skyscrapers but Mombasa is the place to relax. Looks like my pics did not post, if anyone can help please let me know how to post the pics...

Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, lying on the Indian Ocean. It has a major port and an international airport. The city is the centre of the coastal tourism industry. The original Arabic name is Manbasa; in Kiswahili it is called Kisiwa Cha Mvita (or Mvita for short), which means "Island of War", due to the many changes in its ownership. The town is also the headquarters of Mombasa District which, like most other districts in Kenya, is named after its chief town.

The city has a population of around 900,000 inhabitants (1999 census: 665,018) and is located on Mombasa Island, which is separated from the mainland by two creeks; Tudor Creek and Kilindini Harbour. The island is connected to the mainland to the north by the Nyali Bridge, to the south by the Likoni Ferry and to the west by the Makupa Causeway, alongside which runs the Uganda Railway. The port serves both Kenya and countries of the interior, linking them to the Ocean. The town is also home to an airport.

Do you know the names or location (downtown island, North coast or south coast) of the developments? This sounds interesting.

Sh500m plan to turn historic gardens into a pleasure park

SOURCE: DAILY NATION

Story by MAZERA NDURYA
Publication Date: 3/21/2007
An ambitious plan to turn the decrepit Mama Ngina drive in Mombasa into a modern recreational garden, complete with shopping arcades and other facilities, might be realised soon.

This follows the hosting by Mombasa of the prestigious World Cross Country championships starting this week.

The plan was first mooted by the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) two years ago but nothing came of it until now.

The Government has just released over Sh10 million to the NMK to give the garden a face-lift. The coordinator of the Mama Ngina project, Dr Ahmed Yassin, paid tribute to the ongoing beautification of Mombasa for the athletics fete.

MAJOR FACELIFT: Some of the ongoing efforts to green and light up the gardens. “For the adventurous, a walk down the cliff into nearby caves is a must, letting the cool ocean water lap one’s feet. It’s a sensational experience.” Photos/LABAN WALLOGA.

He said hope had been rekindled that the garden’s historical and recreational value would not be lost. The name Mama Ngina, he added, is revered by Kenyans and the Government.

“The cross country event is a God-send. Plans to have the garden transformed into an international recreation and business facility might be realised soon,” he said.

More promises made

When top Government officials toured the area recently to assess the progress so far, more promises were made on sprucing up of the garden. It remains to be seen whether all that was said will come to pass.

Four permanent secretaries, Mr Gerishon Ikiara (Transport), Mrs Rebecca Nabutola (Tourism), Mrs Alice Mayaka (Heritage) and Mrs Rachael Dzombo (Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services) attended the tour. Government spokesman Alfred Mutua was also in the team. He promised a further Sh3 million to upgrade pavements and walkways at the park.

An inter-ministerial committee was proposed to look into further development of the park and sustain what has already been achieved.

Although the work being undertaken in beautification of Mombasa is minimal, compared to what is expected, there is a marked improvement in the town’s outlook.

Perched on a cliff

Previously, the situation was horrible. Shanty houses perched on a cliff overlooking Likoni channel were a new inclusion to the decay that was rapidly eating into the historic Mama Ngina Drive Park.

Oblivious of the dangers that lurk on the edge of the cliff, the families went about their life uninterrupted, occasionally watching big ships cruising into the Mombasa harbour through the Likoni channel.

It takes a keen eye to notice the houses that are partly hidden by a thicket and sandwiched by giant baobab trees.

Just a few meters away, as one entered or left the Likoni ferry, deafening noise emanating from matatus at the terminus welcomed one to the park.

Exhaust fumes mixed with dust from speeding matatus and other vehicles spread into the nearby open air restaurants, where patrons enjoyed their meals.

After filling their bellies with food, which was sold for as little as Sh10 a plate, some ill-mannered customers would take a stroll behind the baobab trees for short calls, sending an acrid smell to the nostrils of nearby patrons. For long, this was the normal pattern of life. A meal could be taken anywhere so long as it was affordable.

Despite the many years of neglect and wrangles between different groups that claimed ownership of the area, its breathtaking beauty and soothing sea breeze were ideal for relaxation.

Watch the sun set

Every evening, people visit the park for a stroll, or to while away the time as they watch the sun set against an azure ocean background.

Come Sunday and the scene is different. People start streaming in from as early as 10am. They stroll along the road while others sit under the baobab trees.

For the adventurous, a walk down the cliff into nearby caves is a must, letting the cool ocean water lap their feet. It is a sensational experience.

The NMK came up with a proposal for an ambitious multi-million project that would transform the park from its unkempt state to an exotic recreation and business enterprise. Ultimately, this will change the face of Mombasa town.

The project is a master-plan of landscaping and rehabilitation. It will create a new look to the pedestrian area, vehicular access and relaxing areas. Architect Kassim Omar says the design mirrors the typology of the Mombasa Old Town.

“We held a stake-holders workshop that brought together other groups with special interests — like the municipal council, National Environmental Management Authority, architects and engineers. The group took stock of the project and gave its valued opinion.

“We want to create at the Kilindini waterfront an organised centre that will provide a one-stop entertainment and shopping arcade. We will not evict vendors of madafu and crisps, but will give them a more organised and hygienic environment,” said the then Heritage minister, Mr Najib Balala. This was soon after the project’s masterplan was launched.

According to the estimates, the project will cost about Sh500 million. The first phase will comprise an integrated landscaping programme, children’s park, public toilets and shopping malls — at about Sh200 million.

When complete, the park will have an amphitheatre where artists can exhibit their skills — plays and dances. The audience will pay token fees for the entertainment.

Exhibits on display at the Old Law Courts, Mombasa, were really exotic.

“This is a project whose returns are guaranteed to ensure sustainability. Many financial institutions and donors will not have any reservation about it."

The exhibition gave the public a chance to view and comment on the project, as they are the main stakeholder. Players in the tourism industry praised the venture, but were sceptical on the Government’s commitment.

Keep park’s image intact

They were equally unsure whether the gains made in beautifying the town’s gardens, parks, pavements and round-abouts would be sustained after the cross-country championships.

The chairperson of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO), Ms Tasneem Adamji, said there was need for follow-up to ensure that the relevant agencies enforced the laws to keep the park’s image intact.

“It is good for the industry. This is not the first time that the private sector has contributed immensely towards uplifting the city’s image.

"But in many cases, there has been no one to take care of these projects after they achieve their initial purposes,” she said.

Mombasa may be a great vacation city but it has disapointed in many other areas. The so called informal sector should be regulated and taxed so that the infrustructure can be improved. Another problem with Mombasa is the fact that the old buildings have been retained even when they are not historic buildings, the city looks run-down and in need of a major facelift. Nakuru is on the way back and Kisumu seems to have a plan to make itself a viable modern city but Mombasa remains a city with no real direction. I don't mind spending time in the many impressive hotels, restaurants and clubs but the average Mombasan's life can be improved by better planning.

Its very possible that Mombasa will have a skyline in the near future on the island. All you have to do is look at Dar es Salaam today. Dar has the same paln and congested city centre with old buildings like Mombasa. What they are doing is zoning the city. The old buildings in commercial zones are now being torn down and being replaced by skyscrapers.

Mombasa's skyline will most likely appear where the city's skyscrapers today are located. (the Bima tower, TSS area around Digo road and Moi avenue).
More skyscrapers will be built if:

1.) Major companies based in the city eg. Bamburi Portland Cement, decide to build corporate headquarters.
2.)If the legislation to turn Mombasa into a free port are passed-Businesses will opt to set up shop in Mombasa (hence more office space needed and towers).
3.) If the East African submarine fibre-optic cable is laid, Mombasa will be the entry point for the cable to connect East and Central Africa. This translates into the establishment of call centres in the city hence more office space will be needed (this is very likely to happen as its being built).
4.)Due to lack of bed space in major hotels as a result of the upswing of tourists, some new hotels will have to be built. If they are on the island, they will have to be built upwards (towers) due to lack of space.

Why on earth do you guys want mombasa to have skuscrapers. this is a beautifull city with a lot of character. i prefer they sorted out the streets and made them clean build the skyscrapers on the mainland, make the water front as attractive as miami's and clean up the place. this is all we need for our favourite laid back city. mombassa will never look good with skyscrapers. it might look oppulent but not good.

You may be right. My consern is that Mombasa is bieng left behind by other cities. The Island is beautifull but I think some of the older buildings should be demolished. Mombasa Island does not necessarily have to have mega skyscrapers but they need new buildings along with better planned roads. The problem is that we seem very obsessed with keeping the old town as is but I think that making some building historical sites and then making an effort to modernize the city will increase tourism and also attract people who would normally invest in Nairobi. Mombasa can be more than a tourism destination, it can be a bussiness center ala Nairobi. If Mombasa is to stay ahead of Daresalam and other cities in the region, the city has to have a strategy that will make it more marketable than other cities. SA cities compete for bussiness and that is how I think Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru should do...compete for what Nairobi takes for granted, attract the best minds to build bussiness.

Uganda cargo throughput at Mombasa reaches 1.7m tonnesBy

July 30 - August 5, 2007
ABDULSAMAD ALI
Special Correspondent
Uganda-bound cargo at the port of Mombasa is on the upswing this year and there are indications that the total throughput will break all previous records.

A forecast released by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director Abdalla Mwaruwa shows that between January and June this year, total traffic was at 1.7 million tonnes compared with the same period last year, when total traffic was 1.3 million tonnes.
This is an increase of 308,074 tonnes or 22.9 per cent.

The forecast shows an increase in traffic every month for the half year. In January, cargo destined for Uganda was 230,824 tonnes, in February 240,804 tonnes, March 257,170 tonnes, April 307,090 tonnes, May 312,694 tonnes and June 302,591 tonnes.

“During the same period under review, total imports were 1.5 million tonnes this year compared with 1.2 million tonnes last year,” said Mr Mwaruwa. This gives an increase of 285,372 tonnes or 23.7 per cent. For exports, the same period last year gave a total of 139,970 tonnes as opposed to this year year’s 162,672 tonnes.

This gives a rise of 22,702 tonnes or 16.2 per cent. Mr Mwaruwa said by by half year, Uganda’s transit cargo share accounts for 77.3 per cent followed by Rwanda and DR Congo at 6 per cent each.
The KPA boss was addressing a delegation of the Ugandan Parliamentary Accounts Committee that is visiting Kenya. The delegation led by the committee chairman Nandala Mafabi, was on a fact finding mission to the port and had earlier visited several assets owned by the Uganda government both in Nairobi and Mombasa.

For the past five years, Uganda-bound traffic has been rising steadily. For instance, in 2002, KPA handled a total of 1.7 million tonnes, a figure which has been rising consistently up to last year, when it handled a total of 2.8 million tonnes. Last year alone, Uganda’s cargo accounted for 72 per cent out of all the transit traffic handled at the port. Cargo destined for Tanzania was 6.9 per cent of the entire traffic.

Mr Mwaruwa said the port has modernised extensively in the recent past, “But we did not realise that other infrastructural systems were not keeping pace with us. The truth is that while the port’s throughput since early this year shot up over 40 per cent, very little cargo was leaving the port for its eventual destinations.

The port was faced with serious congestion,” he told the MPs from Uganda. He said the issue of congestion was being addressed although offtake is still a problem.

We have had to transfer over-stayed cargo to container freight stations adjacent to the port, where owners can now collect it. This has created space for incoming cargo as well as exports,” he said.

He said KPA has implemented 24-hour port operations so that cargo whose duty has been paid can now be moved out any time. “This is already working well,” said Mr Mwaruwa. At the waterfront, he said KPA has effectively minimised vessel delays to the extent that all ships berth on arrival.

In July, KPA was awarded the coveted International Safety Management (ISM) Code compliance certificate.

The US embassy In Nairobi27-July-2007: The United States plans to set up a consulate in Mombasa in a move that is expected to have multiple political and economic consequences for Kenya’s second city and the wider East African region.

http://www.bdafrica.com/images/stories/International/Bd-US-Embassy-Nairobi.jpg

US Embassy officials have drawn up a proposal for the reopening of the consular office, closed in 1993. The plan is currently under review by the State Department.
The Americans say an official presence in the city will boost tourism and enhance trade.

Muslim leaders at the Coast, however, have dismissed the Americans’ plans as aimed at establishing a foothold in the predominantly Muslim Island with a view to prosecuting the war against terror. They warn efforts to set up the office in Mombasa will be resisted.

In an interview with Business Daily, secretary-general of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), Sheikh Mohammed Dor, spoke in unusually strong terms, saying that an official American presence in Mombasa will be a magnet for terrorism.

“I am praying day and night that our government rejects this plan. It is a fact that the Americans have many enemies and they are not limited to the Muslim world. These people will flock here and they will find weak points (in the security set up of the consulate) and they will attack.

The government will not be able to guarantee the security of the Americans. If they (Kenyan government) really care about tourism, they will reject this proposal. Why bring war to a peaceful Island?”

Mombasa is home to East Africa’s principal port. It is also a pillar of Kenya’s tourism industry, attracting thousands of tourists every year to its beaches and seaside resorts.

US Embassy spokesperson Jennifer Barnes says the American plans to reopen the consulate are motivated by a desire to “care for increasing numbers of American citizens who travel and vacation on Kenya’s coast (and) to strengthen our relations with all of the communities that make up Coast province.”

It is unclear whether the Kenyan ministry of foreign affairs has been officially informed of the US plans or whether any formal arrangement has been struck between the two countries.

Chief of Protocol at the Foreign Affairs ministry Bruce Madete could not be reached for comment on this story as he was said to be held up in meetings all day yesterday.

Business Daily understands US officials have been holding unofficial consultations with a large number of local contacts with a view to establishing the feasibility of the proposed consular office.

The reaction of Muslim community leaders at the Coast has been largely negative.

In the last few months, some members of the Muslim community have been inflamed by arrest of youths that the government claims are linked to fundamentalists plotting attacks within Kenyan soil.

Community leaders see these civil liberty violations as maneuvers by the government to underline its anti-terror credentials to attract aid.

According to Sheikh Dor, who says he was consulted by a US embassy official on the consulate plans, the prevailing view among Muslim leaders is that the installation will serve to provide diplomatic cover for US counterterrorism officials he says are active at the Coast.

Neither this claim nor his assertion that he had spoken to US embassy officials could be independently verified.

For the Kibaki administration, the task of deciding whether to give the Americans the green light puts in stark relief the challenge faced by governments on the frontline of the international war against religious fundamentalism.

Leaders from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia to Egypt have been forced to tread a delicate diplomatic tight rope in their attempts to maintain cordial ties with the US by tackling militancy while grappling with considerable anti-American sentiment at home.

In Kenya’s case, America is both a strategic economic and military ally. The country is also the fastest growing source of tourist arrivals.

More than 80,000 Americans have vacationed in Kenya in the last year, meaning it has overtaken Germany in second place as a source market for tourists.

The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) views the US as one of the markets that can help take maintain recent growth in tourism, which along with horticulture, is credited with driving recent economic growth in the country.

The last thing which industry players would want is mass demonstrations against an official American presence at the Coast.

On the other hand, the militarist policies of the Bush administration are seen as having stoked considerable anti-Americanism in the country.

According to KTB Chairman Jake Grieves-Cook, the debate on whether or not to set up a US consulate at the Coast is unlikely to have major negative effects on tourism.

“Tourists from the US have a large number of options in terms of tropical beaches back home. The volume of Americans flying directly into Mombasa is quite low. They mostly come into Nairobi and head off to various game safari destinations,” he says. On the political level, however, the plan is likely to prove a significant flashpoint in an election year.

Cargo handling at the Kenyan Port of Mombasa has risen by 40% since December last year, a statement from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) indicates.

Cargo arrivals have risen by 122,528 tonnes or 20.2% in the first quarter of the year.

The rise of activity is sparked by both a combination of poor off take system that slows activity and the general increase in cargo arrivals has pushed management to adapt to measures aimed at decongesting the port.

The KPA Ugandan resident representative, Mr. William Mtengo said recently at a press briefing that over 60% of the port is underutilised.

"The port has a design capacity of 21 million tonnes per year but last year handled a total of 14.4 million tonnes," said Mtengo.

Uganda still leads transit countries in the region in performance. Uganda's transit cargo reached a total of 728,798 tonnes for the same period compared to 606,270 tonnes for a similar period last year.

The port's management has adapted a three year business plan which is intended to increase port traffic, improve the quality of customer service and to enhance operational efficiency.

It is expected that as the region moves closer to a one business system under the East African Community with limited or no restrictions on the movement of goods and people, activity will further increase at the Mombasa port.

In the same period from December last year to June this year, the growth of the container population has hit about 30%.

The report compiled by KPA indicates that in the past five years, cargo throughput at the port of Mombasa has risen by 40 percent or over 4 million tonnes.

Last year the port handled a total of 14.4 million tonnes compared to the previous year when it handled a total of 13.2 million tonnes.

The surrounding caves, which served as holding grounds for slaves waiting to be shipped to the Middle East and other destinations more than 400 years ago, were used to commit some of the vices.

Lighting has been installed at the Jomo Kenyatta Public beach recently, the first since independence.

Gangs used caves as hideouts to pounce on unsuspecting visitors.

Many residents had resigned to fate perhaps because they never expected any action from the Government or the local authority.

The choice of Mombasa as the host city for this year’s 35th edition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) cross-country championships brought with it some good tidings.

The hosting of the event on 24th March marked a turning point for the town and the popular public beach in particular. After successfully hosting the IAAF festival, all has changed and the historic site continues to get a new face.

According to the Mombasa Municipal Council, Mama Ngina Drive was set aside for visitors to sit and relax while watching ships coming to dock or sail out of the port of Mombasa.

The area, which extends from the Likoni ferry to the Coast police headquarters, is today the number one choice of many visitors.

Prior to hosting the IAAF event, a number of ministries were given the mandate to develop the centre into a world-class venue.

After hosting the event, the ministries decided to extend the beautification programme to cover other areas.

Today, Mombasa is undergoing a makeover and once it is complete, it will transform the coastal city into one of the most modern tourists hub in East Africa.

Boosting world class beach hotels, Mombasa hosts more than 70 per cent of the nearly one million tourists who visit Kenya each year.

In recognition of Mombasa as a gateway to East Africa, a major beautification project pioneered by the Office of the Government Spokesman, Dr Alfred Mutua, has already transformed the area into a well-lit city at night. Previously, Mombasa used to be among the darkest towns in Kenya at night.

Driving along the streets of Mombasa at night is no longer a nightmare but a leisure to motorists as the town continues to get a face-lift.

For the last three months, trenches have been dug along the busy streets, electric poles put and underground cables laid.

This is part of the multi-million Mombasa improvement project undertaken by the inter-ministerial committee, headed by Mutua, in partnership with the private sector.

The committee is working on an elaborate programme to install streetlights.

In a move aimed at decongesting the island of vehicles, the committee plans to construct a bus park at Kengeleni for Malindi and North Coast bound public service vehicles.

The project allows partner companies to advertise their products on the illuminated boards and generate some revenue for the Mombasa Municipal Council.

The concessions will last for five years and if the companies wish to continue, they can apply afresh or have other companies take over the management and advertisement.

"The arrangement is such that 30 per cent of the proceed will go to the Mombasa Municipal Council while the rest will go towards maintaining the infrastructure for five years," Mr Francis Mwaka, who represents Mutua in overseeing the works, said.

Design work is already in progress to put up a footbridge at Likoni ferry to ease the flow of passengers and reduce congestion at the vital crossing.

"Once complete, passengers will walk on the foot bridge and get to the ferry without the usual queues ," Mwaka said.

The committee also intends to put up a police station at the Mama Ngina Drive. The station will have an office block where officials from the Mombasa Municipal Council, Tourism and National Museums of Kenya will be stationed and act as customer care officers.

The office will be a one-stop shop where a visitor will be given information about Mombasa and what it offers.

It will also have four cells and five blocks of toilets. The site for the toilets has already been identified and work has started.

A ‘perfume garden’ has also been established. This will create an environment that will give a natural welcoming scent to visitors.

The attractive trees that give out the sweet smell have been planted. These trees are now an attraction.

To bring some order, the committee has banned driving schools from using the eight-hectare area as a training ground.

Mwaka says designer shelters are being put in place for Madafu sellers and cassava crisps (kachiri) to ensure that the history of the garden is maintained.

The committee will also install seats to ensure holidaymakers and residents have an ideal place to relax.

The ongoing Sh8 million landscaping is expected to give Mombasa a new face .

Two modern restaurants will be constructed close to the sea and tour operators will have an opportunity to bring tourists to these facilities every time they have town tours.

A modern walkway is also being put up in place from Likoni ferry to Fort Jesus. The walkway, measuring about five kilometres, will have lights and this will allow visitors to enjoy the beach front at night. Fifty per cent of the work on this pathway is complete.

On traffic flow, a modern parking yard has been put up at the Mama Ngina Drive to ensure there is organised parking. Previously, motorists parked cars on the grass and on any available open space. A well-designed parking has been put up at the garden.

"This will not happen again, motorists are advised to park at designated places. Police will be on standby to ensure order and security throughout," Mwaka said.

Three points have been identified and will be constructed at strategic areas for the public to view ships. Transparent material will be used but will be reinforced to ensure safety.

"We want Kenyans visiting Mama Ngina Drive to be proud of their country. We want them to visit again because of the high standards in place. We want to ensure that everything done here is environment friendly," Mwaka said.

The committee has also sunk a borehole to ensure there is water at the garden throughout. Some of the water will be used to water the grass and ensure cleanliness of the ablution block.

A 10,000 litres water tank is under construction at the park. It is expected to ease the water shortage and ensure the park has enough water throughout. The tank is expected to be ready this month.

At the Pamba Roho football ground, Fort Jesus, the committee has issued a notice to close down the ground for at least six months and plant grass to make it conducive for the youth to play football and carry out other activities.

Lights have already been put up around the ground and there are plans to put more. This is designed to give the youth a facility to carry out day and night activities.

"Our aim is to make the youth busy and avoid being lured into the harsh world of drugs," Mwaka said.

Similarly, all roads in Mombasa are being re-branded. A brief history of each of the roads or personality named after the road will be engraved.

"For instance, Nyerere Road will have a picture and brief history of former Tanzanian president, Julius Mwalimu Nyerere, and role played he played," Mwaka said.

The project will involve school children as part of a learning process. This is designed to help them to know their heroes and the contribution they made to the country’s independence or development.

Design work for the road-branding project is complete and will be launched soon.

Mombasa mayor, Mr Khamisi Musa Mwidani, said the project will make Mombasa the darling of many Kenyans.

Working with the road safety department, all the major roads have been marked with zebra crossings to ensure safety of pedestrians and schoolchildren.

At the North Coast, the inter-ministerial committee has picked Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach for improvement.

An additional road to the beach is being put up to ease congestion and allow more motorists and visitors.

A police station is already being put up to beef up security at the recreation centre.

Design work for model kiosks is already in place.

Jomo Kenyatta is today a well-lit recreational facility. Beach operators have ensured discipline is maintained.

Several groups have come up with uniforms and nametags for easy identification. This will also make it easy for visitors to identify the people that they deal with.

In the past, Mwaka says, visitors to Jomo Kenyatta feared losing their property when swimming. This will now be history as personal effects will be put in private lockers.

Mr Anthony Masinde, a beach operator, said the introduction of nametags and uniforms has helped to reduce theft.

Photographers, life savers and those who rent out floaters have different uniforms," he said.

Mr Samuel Mbudza, also a beach operator, said the inter-ministerial committee will put up a watchtower and a quick response team to deal with emergencies.

"There will be three watchtowers equipped with life saving equipment to ensure visitors in distress are assisted immediately," he said.

A parking yard has also been developed to ensure vehicles are parked at a safe distance.

A police station with four cells is being built.

Mwaka says his committee will put up five toilets and an equal number of bathrooms.

A team of experts at the Town Hall has also gone out to survey the possibilities of creating several fire sub stations. The areas identified are Shika Adabu, Kongowea, Bombolulu, Mlaleo and Changamwe. The sub stations will ensure there is a quick response to emergencies.

"We cannot talk of development if we have not taken care of our emergency response, we are thinking ahead to ensure we can respond to any kind of disaster when it occurs," Mwaka said.

In its long term plan, the team has been exploring the possibilities of building an alternative road to the existing Mombasa/Nairobi highway through Mwakirunge to ease congestion and decongest the town.

Design work has already started and is expected to be complete by end of the year.

In the town centre, road crossings have been marked clearly to ensure pedestrians’ safety. To ease the traffic congestion at Kibarani, all lorries have been directed to keep to the left. The long-term solution, the police says, is to create a climbing lane at Kibarani.

you get the feeling that we kenyans have come to the realization that we only have kenyans to take care of our homeland and nobody else is gonna do it for us kind of a resurgence of "by kenyan for kenyans" feeling. all of a sudden t-shirts with patriotic phrases have become the fashion, same case with bumper stickers, a believe that we can do it. it is like we just got our indipende. "We want Kenyans visiting Mama Ngina Drive to be proud of their country. We want them to visit again because of the high standards in place." this statement by mr mwaka i think explains what i am trying to say.

I like what I see but I think we can do more. The fact that even with 27yrs of stagnation we are still a major tourism destination is a tribute to the work ethic of Kenyans. The new economic times are a window to the possibilities in Kenya. 2030 is ambitious but I think Kenyans will surprise even ourselves as we aim to be a second income economy by 2030. It is attainable and I believe we might even do better considering how confident most Kenyan's seem to be. The new generation not tied to the old system will take over by 2013 and we will really take off then.

I wish they would knck down some on the old buildings by the waterfront and build a small highway that goes around the whole island. I know week need to retain the historical Mombasa but the whole Island would attract so many more residents if we decided to mordernize some of the areas. I know many Kenyans resist this but I think we can still generate alot of tourrism if we changed the city a little making it more accessible and modern.

Mombasa has more urgent needs like a major by-bass linking the south coast with the main Nairobi-Mombasa highway to ease pressure on the ferry services or maybe a tunnel or suspension bridge in the long term linking the island (downtown) to the south coast.

The old town does not need to be demolished to modernise Mombasa. Instead, downtown Mombasa can have more modern buildings added to it. (Im thinking medium rise hotel buildings and a few more office blocks facing the sea with areas such as Mama Ngina drive providing a scenic frontage for these properties). The old town will be behind these developments. That way the old town is maintained and a modern downtown facing the Indian ocean and Likoni channel making an interesting combination that would surely make Mombasa unique (14th century meets 21st century architecture).:)

I don't think that the old twon should be demolished but a planned recontruction of the areas, especially by the water making it more accessible and better looking would go a long way into making Mombasa better and still retain it's unique look and feel.

Kenya: Mombasa to Remain a Port of Choice - Survey
The East African (Nairobi)

11 March 2008

Nairobi Is the Mombasa port's dominance of the trans-shipment cargo business in the East African region under serious threat?

That has been the question on the minds of observers following the recent political crisis in Kenya that caused unprecedented disruption of transport activity on routes serving the country's landlocked neighbours.

A recent survey that looked at competition for transit cargo between East Africa's two largest ports - Mombasa and Dar es Salaam - has predicted that the Kenyan port is still likely to remain the port of choice for exporters and importers in the region in the near future.

Conducted in the month of February by the management of the Kenya Ports Authority in conjunction with the Kenya High Commission in Tanzania, the study found that the latter country's two major ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga had intractable problems that prevented them taking full advantage of the problems in Mombasa during the political crisis.

The team of researchers that conducted the survey spent one full month driving continuously around the main road links in the region in a "recce" that saw them traverse the entire Central Corridor from Dar es Salaam through Morogoro, Dodoma, Singida, Isaka, Kahama, Benaco, Rusumo Mutukula, Bukoba, Mwanza, Serari, Arusha, Moshi, Korogwe, Tanga and Chalinze and back to Dar es Salaam.

In total, the journey covered a distance of 4,221 kilometres.

The East African region has two main transport corridors - the Northern Corridor connecting Mombasa to the Ugandan border towns of Malaba and Busia, and the Central Corridor linking Dar es Salaam through Bukoba to the landlocked countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mombasa port dominates the transit cargo business in the region, commanding a market share of 88 per cent of transhipment cargo to Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda in 2005.

Right now, the Dar es Salaam port is experiencing an acute pile-up of cargo caused by inordinate delays in discharging ships.

According to estimates by shipping lines, it takes between 12 and 13 days for a ship to be discharged at the port.

In the thick of the recent political crisis in Kenya and the consequent disruption of transport business on the Northern Corridor, landlocked Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi were beginning to seek alternative sea routes.

Authorities in Kenya have been especially concerned about recent events that suggested that Tanzania was moving to capitalise on that country's problems.

Such has been the anxiety that some observers were beginning to read a grand conspiracy against the Mombasa port.

The perception was given credence by a recent upsurge in diplomatic activity between Tanzania and its landlocked neighbours.

In a period of just one month, literally all the landlocked countries - Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda - have sent high-powered ministerial delegations to Dar es Salaam to asses the port's capacity to handle more cargo.

Tanzania port authorities had also only recently signed memoranda of understanding with Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda - all of them on the subject of transit cargo.

New developments at the Dar port itself and what seems like a new push by Tanzanian authorities to improve the main railway link with Kigali combined to entrench the impression that Mombasa's competitive advantage in the region was at last under serious threat.

Only recently, Tanzania contracted Oceania Advanced Industries of Israel to dredge all its 11 berths. The deal was concluded with alacrity, suggesting that the country was moving quickly to take advantage of the political turmoil in Kenya.

The dredging project - estimated to cost $4 million - is expected to commence from March 2008 and to be completed in 32 weeks. Authorities say the newly dredged facilities will improve ship turnaround times and enable large ocean-going vessels to dock at Dar port.

Another dredging project is on the cards at the Kigoma port. Mombasa's competitiveness is also threatened by the developments at the Isaka Dry Port. On January 25 this year, officials of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the US firm awarded the tender to construct the Isaka-Kigali railway line, were in Dar es Salaam to hold discussions with President Jakaya Kiwete.

Isaka Dry Port was built in 1993 by Tanzania Railway Corporation to serve northern Tanzania and the landlocked countries. It started operations in 1994.

I guess you can call it ''the Nairobi effect''. IMO kenyan towns and cities began getting their act together and improving after Nairobi did.

^^
I guess its because of the temperature. White generally helps cool the buildings (reflects sunlight). As for its architecture, I'd say its very diverse reflecting various influences from the various cultures that have been present in the city's long history.
