This is the new Arena for Berlin:
After long negotiations it has now been announced that a name-sponsor will be found until the end of the year to secure the financial costs.
After that construction works should begin.
Possible name-sponsors include:O2 and the Deutsche Telekom.
The arena will house 17.000 spec. but it can also go up to 21.000 spec. as the plannings are not totally finished yet.It depends on the budget basically.
The arena will be home to Alba Berlin (Basketball) and the Eisbaeren (Icebears,Icehockey)

They could have named it O2 arena or something like that.
I also think that a capacity of 19.000 would have been better.
17.000 is just a bit too small for a city like Berlin.
Some more stats:
- 17.000 seats
- 59 business boxes
- 4 Event boxes

It will cost 150 million euros,(Thats actually quite cheap.)and it will be opened in 2008.

Anna Maria August 16th, 2006, 08:00 PM but who is gonna use it?
Good question. The arena's American owner is "Anschutz Entertainment Group", and his main home team will be "Eisbaeren Berlin", an ice hockey team with 2005/2006 average of 4,245 fans (2004/2005 4,429). "Eisbaeren" is a former GDR (East Germany) club, with almost no fans in the western, much bigger, part of the city.
13,000 venues like SAP-Arena/Mannheim, Color Line Arena/Hamburg, or the new ISS-Arena/Duesseldorf, with ice hockey utilization of 85-90% (a DEL team plays up to 36 home games/season), should be better choices. Let's see.

Filipe_Golias August 17th, 2006, 06:15 AM I want one like this back home :D
GNU August 17th, 2006, 12:48 PM who is going to use the arena?
Well first youve got the Berlin Eisbaeren which is one of Berlins two Icehockey teams.
The Eisbaeren are the former eastern club and are owned by Anschutz whos company AEG is behind the whole arena project.
Then theres Alba Berlin, which is Germanys best Basketball team.
I dont think that they will permanently play there, but they could have some games there that will get a high attendance.
and then of course the arena will be used for all kinds of things like for example concerts.
Berlin is a big city and it needs an arena like this.

No, thats certainly not true.
The capacity for Icehockey/Basketball games should be 17k.
The argument about the upper tier is not correct btw.
The O2-dome in London will also have a upper tier which doesnt go round the whole way.
Ive actually argued that both arenas could have the same capacity in the end.
If you look at the construction works of the O2-Dome youll see that it looks very similar indeed to the renderings of the O2-World.
Not a big surprise as both arenas are/will be owned by AEG.

I could imagine that its 16,000 for Icehockey and 17,000 for Basketball.
It could also be that the AEG site hasnt been updated recently.
Because on the O2-world site (which is newer) it says that it will host 17k.
will be the skyscraper next to it built?
As far as I know it will be built, but right now its not clear when.
The whole area around it is being redeveloped so sooner or later something will be built.

nyrmetros February 23rd, 2007, 12:53 AM Eisbären Berlin (http://www.eisbaeren.de/content/index.php). They play in Germany's highest league (the DEL) and are the current champions.
Do they have a working relationship with a NHL team?
GNU February 23rd, 2007, 12:13 PM Do they have a working relationship with a NHL team?
I dont know what you mean with relationship but I think they havent got anything to do with the NHL.
Theyre just a regular DEL team. http://www.del.org/
But they are owned by Anshutz who also owns a few american sports teams.

Certainly is big enough. It will be interesting what the average attendance in hockey games will be. Right now Eisbären Berlin have 4,500 (the old Wellblechpalast has a capacity of 4,695). They should be in the top 6 though.
Top 6 teams in attendance this regular season:
1 Kölner Haie 12,711
2 Adler Mannheim 12,688
3 Hamburg Freezers 10,293
4 DEG Metro Stars 7,727
5 Hannover Scorpions 6,186
6 Frankfurt Lions 6,060
League average is 6,175.

www.sercan.de October 2nd, 2007, 10:11 PM Stadionwelt has got many informations about the arena
Capacity for Icehockey and Basketball is 15,500
17,000 is for concerts
It has got 65 suits (59 Busines, 4 event and 2 conference)
http://www.stadionwelt.de/neu/sw_arenen/index.php?folder=sites&site=neubau_detail&id=2
GNU October 3rd, 2007, 01:30 PM Yeah, recently I searched through google and some sources say its only gonna host 14,500 for IceHockey? wtf?
So Stadionwelt thinks its going to host 1.000 more?
Well lets see. Overall the info on capacities is pretty messed up.
I thought that the o2dome and the o2world would come up the same in the end at around 17k.
But I guess we will not know the exact cap until the first IceHockey game has been played in the o2world.
www.sercan.de October 3rd, 2007, 02:18 PM Maybe 14.500 Icehockey and 15.500 Basketball?
Actually it would be normal, because Basketball capacity is mostly higher than Icehockey capacity
GNU October 3rd, 2007, 02:48 PM Possible. I just wonder why its turning out smaller than the o2-dome?
Maybe theyve added a few more tiers there?
Judging from the pics they look pretty identical.
If its really only going to house 14,5k then it would also only be slightly bigger than the SAP arena in Mannheim which is a bit odd imo.

I'll give you that the gap in skill has closed considerably since the '92 olympics, and we did get our asses handed to us in Athens (mostly due to the fact that the team had only been playing together for a month), but in a showdown between two teams that have been playing with eachother and practicing the whole year, I'm guessing the NBA team would be favored

'Purchasing' power. Which means you can buy better players and to be able to afford a $$$ organization.
If Europe had a lousy currency, like an African state for example. Would we even be talking about the possibility of a league setting up shop? Of course not.
I work for an international petroleum business and we just changed from using USD$ as the trading currency to the euro because it is more stable and stronger.
People prefer to trade with the stronger currency simply put. Would you like to be paid in USD or euros on a one-2-one basis? You would earn another 10 to 20 per cent.

This appears to be one of those arenas in which the seating bowl is oriented around the basketball court, which means that the hockey rink id "offset" to one end of the arena, resulting in most seats on that end of the arena being closed off. Several NBA arenas (Minnesota, Phoenix, Indiana, Miami, Memphis, Charlotte, etc.) have this feature, often forcing the NHL team in some of those cities to seek their own arena.
GNU August 28th, 2008, 11:01 AM Not sure, the arena isnt finished yet, but it does look somewhat like it. To my knowledge the arena itself hasnt been purposely laid out for Basketball though, the local Basketball team only recently decided to host its home games there.

Kuvvaci September 11th, 2008, 03:20 PM Tahnk you for your answer. How many of those arenas are suitable for basketball?
Good question.
It depends on which type of sport we are talking about since the cap differs between them.
I guess it would look something like this now:
Lanxess Arena, Cologne 18.500 (19.250 Handball)
O2-World, Berlin 15.500 (Basketball)
SAP Arena, Mannheim 14.500 (Icehockey)
AWD-Dome, Bremen 14.000 (14.500 Handball)
ISS Dome, Düsseldorf 13.400 (Icehockey)
Color Line Arena, Hamburg 13.000 (Handball)
TUI Arena, Hannover 10.767 (Icehockey)
König-Pilsener-ARENA, Essen 10.300 (Handball)
Sparkassen-Arena, Kiel 10.250 (Handball)
www.sercan.de September 11th, 2008, 04:00 PM suite seats look anormal big
GNU September 12th, 2008, 01:38 PM Tahnk you for your answer. How many of those arenas are suitable for basketball?
Technically speaking they are all suitable for Basketball.
However only the O2-World has a Basketball club as a regular tenant (ALBA Berlin).
The Lanxess Arena and the AWD-Dome do stage games from time to time though as far as I know.

Svartmetall September 14th, 2008, 04:12 PM That's one good looking arena. At least it's right next to The U-bahn and S-bahn (Warschauer Strasse). Does it have much car parking on the site, I'm hoping not because that area could look really attractive with the canal nearby.

Heres an aerial. The area around the arena might be developed at some point though.

Umm...you know that parking garages are often used at sporting venues here, right? Especially those located downtown.
Delmat October 28th, 2008, 02:05 PM But you also more often use XXL parkings around your stadiums which is not the case in Europe :)

I think the People flying over in Airliners and looking down on large roof spaces changed that. Many US Stadiums and Arenas have been dong it for quite some time now.
Beautiful arena by the way
KingmanIII October 29th, 2008, 07:10 AM But you also more often use XXL parkings around your stadiums which is not the case in Europe :)
It mostly depends on the location in which the stadium or arena is built. Those that are built within the urban core tend to utilize more parking garages and existing lots within the general vicinity of the venue, and are often served quite handily by public transit (think of Boston's TD Banknorth Garden or Minneapolis' Target Field), while those built in lower-density or suburban areas of the city tend to be surrounded by the large surface lots you're talking about (such as the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City or Angel Stadium in Anaheim).
schmidt October 29th, 2008, 03:43 PM I think you can see it from the Fernsehturm as well, which has loooong lines and many visitors hehe. :D
I'm so glad Berlin got this new arena, this city totally deserves it, especially the area it was built. I wish I could still be there...

because we build our big stadiums where? Out in the open.
hoosier November 20th, 2008, 09:16 PM because we build our big stadiums where? Out in the open.
But those massive parking spaces are wasteful. It would be better to build a stadium where it can be reached by mass transit ( and yes, it would still be out in the open). A stadium doesn't need to be in the middle of nowhere to make it nicer.

But there are passenger rail lines right next to the stadium, which is rare in America.

I think that handball is much more popular in Germany than ice hockey.
Patrick March 7th, 2010, 08:56 PM I think that handball is much more popular in Germany than ice hockey.
Just check out this graphic:
http://www.stadionwelt.de/download/stadionwelt_top100_februar.pdf
From the current Top 100 in terms of spectators, 16 are from ice hockey, while only 12 are from handball (and 11 from basketball, the rest is from football).
But when we go into the depth, you might be right. I think, in total, there are more handballers than ice hockey players/spectators in Germany.
SpicyMcHaggis March 7th, 2010, 10:05 PM I think that handball is much more popular in Germany than ice hockey.
No way... DEL has far better attendance and support than Handball Bundesliga.
BobDaBuilder March 10th, 2010, 02:59 PM Hockey is probably more popular in Berlin due to all the eastern Europeans living there. They'll join the KHL sooner or later.
SpicyMcHaggis March 10th, 2010, 03:00 PM Eisbaren are giants from former DDR and immigrants have nothing to do with it. Club was always extremely well supported.
www.sercan.de March 10th, 2010, 03:12 PM Yes. Eisbären Berlin has got "just" 4 championchip titels, but all after 2005
(2005, 2006, 2008, 2009). So something like a dynasty.
And as SpicyMcHaggis
Eisbären Berlin were the 2nd most succcesfull club of the east german league with 15 titels.
BTW at some matches the 2nd tier is closed

BremenFan March 10th, 2010, 04:02 PM Hockey is probably more popular in Berlin due to all the eastern Europeans living there. They'll join the KHL sooner or later.
I don't think you've ever been to an Eisbären game...or even to Berlin
As for the KHL: I'm pretty sure the fans would be delighted by the prospect of playing against Jekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and Khabarovsk instead of Mannheim, Hamburg and Hannover. I hear the KHL looks to add a team from Sachalin. travelling Berlin fans could combine that with a weekend shopping-trip to Tokyo!!
thun March 10th, 2010, 06:12 PM It's more a sort of North-South thing.
Ice-hockey is very popular in the South (especially Bavaria, where lots of the traditional clubs come from smaller towns (Füssen, Landshut, Riessersee, etc.)) and some larger cities (Cologne, Dusseldorf, Berlin). Handball instead tends to be more popular in the North where most of the Bundesliga clubs come from.

You're absolutely right. You just need to take a look at the current top 3 in the Handball-Bundesliga: Kiel, Hamburg and Flensburg. You can't get much further north than that. And as I live in Schleswig-Holstein, I know that there are a lot of handball teams here.
jlch1987 August 20th, 2010, 07:39 PM Btw, can O2 World be expanded in case of much bigger attendances needed?
I think there's still plenty of space inside the arena....
Mansardroof May 11th, 2011, 11:46 AM It is crazy, I went to a football match at Olympiastadion in Berlin and they got one of the Eisbaren out and did a little interview!! Crazy..

I think there's still plenty of space inside the arena....
I doubt it! ... it does actually hold more seats for basketball games (close to 17,500 I think), but as it's a multi-function arena they'd lose the ability to host concerts and conferences if they decided to permanently put more seats in place where the stage is.
