Here you have a very interesting web. This one has a lot of information: http://www.almerianatural.com/fotos%20tabernas.htm Only you must translate it. Even there appears information about the study of filming that was used to roll westerns decades ago.

Using google you can find a lot of information easily. You will not have any problem to do a good work.

The desert is located to the north of the city of Almeria as you can see:

Departing from this map you can extract air images of the area with Google Earth or the World Wind of the NASA.

You can do a good work!

Wikipedia is indeed a good source if you take it carefully: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desierto_de_Tabernas
but I guess you may have some kind of problems with the language since it's in Spanish. So I'll try to translate the most relevant facts for you, hope it helps.

-It's got a size of 280 km2
-It's located 30 km north from the city of Almería
-Its arid climate is partly due to the Foehn wind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foehn), caused by the nearby mountains. Also, other mountain ranges along the coast isolate the zone from the sea influence. That's why the desert exists.
-The average rainfall is 243mm a year. And the average temperature is 17º celsius.
-There use to be torrential rains, which degrade the land, so it helps to keep the ground there as a wasteland.
-As the ground is so poor, it cannot retain humidity, so erosion makes a lot of progress.
-The most of life can be found in the dry beds of the rivers (called "ramblas"). This is the common fauna: vencejo, erizo, grajilla, ganga, roquero solitario, alcaraván, camachuelo trompetero, cogujada. From those the only one that I can translate for you is "erizo", hedgehog, dunno about the rest.

And that's all, good luck!

Well, according to the dictionary, "vencejo" in English is swift. And I've just noticed a weird animal in the list called "roquero solitario", whose translation would be "lonely rocker" but actually it doesn't refer to Hendrix, according to Google the name in English is "blue rock thrush". I think that's enough.
