The statue you are referring to is:

Makarios III

(mäkä´rēôs) , 1913-77, Orthodox Eastern Archbishop and Cypriot statesman, first president of Cyprus (1960-77). Born Michael Mouskos, Makarios was elected bishop of Kition in 1948 and archbishop of Cyprus in 1950. He was the leader of the Greek Cypriots in the movement for enosis (union with Greece). In 1958 he began to press for Cypriot independence from Great Britain rather than union with Greece. When agreement was reached on the independence of Cyprus, he was elected president. Makarios pursued a neutralist policy, favoring a peaceful solution between the island's Greek and Turkish communities. After his term of office had expired in 1965 and had been extended to 1968, Makarios was reelected in 1968 and 1973. In 1972 he came under increasing pressure from the Greek government to allow for greater Greek influence in Cypriot affairs; the Cypriot Orthodox Church pressured him to resign if he failed to do so. Gen. George Grivas, leader of the enosis movement, launched a campaign aimed at overthrowing Makarios. This effort finally succeeded (July, 1974). After several months of exile he returned to Cyprus in Dec., 1974, and resumed the presidency.

Great work Leafs.
I have to say, I have a soft spot for Kypros. I spent a week there in 2001 and had a wonderful time. It reminds me alot like Kriti, although more developed in it's infrastructure, and tourist industry.

It was a bit expensive, though, that's why you probably don't get too many mainland Greek tourists, at least when the Drahmi was still the currency.

Great people, food, and entertainment. Personally, I think Cypriot women are the most beautiful of all Greek women. Also, Ayia Napa, can give Mykonos a run for it's money in partying!

I was in Cyprus a few years ago and the island is beautiful, I visit Paphos, the nort coast (Petra Tou Romeo) Nicosia, Limassol and the monasterys in Throods :yes: and the food is deliciouse too!!

Gen. George Grivas led the EOKA A' and B' movement in the 1950's and 60's, who's aim was to unite Cyprus with Greece.

In the early 70's Makarios had established relations with eastern bloc nations. This aggravated Washington, so Kissinger decided to have the Junta in Athens overthrow Makarios, and replace him with a puppet (Nicos Sampson).
The Junta justified this action by using Greece's right as a gaurrantor nation (so is the UK and Turkey), expressly written in the Cypriot constittution. Several days later, Turkey invaded the island. Washington and London were well aware of this, and new what the outcome would be. Unfortunately, they stood by and watched.

This is the main church of the village of Pedhoulas in the Trodos mountains, it is the church of the Holy Cross (Τιμιου Σταυρου- Tímiou Stavroú ). It was designed and built by my great Grandfather, who was an architect and master builder, his name was Kyprianou Perdios.

Work on the church started in 1938, and it cost £1,800 (sterling).

There are sister churches to the one in Pedhoula where his distinct style can be seen, these include, the Church of Ayia Triadas in Limassol, Agios Giannis (St John) tou Agrou and Sotiras in the Turkish occupied village of Akanthou.

The Church of Sotiras (our saviour), which was a spectacularly large church has now been converted to a Mosque:

no,but there are severeal 12 stories buildings and a few with 13.
There is only one with 14.
Prices are skyrocketing in real estate bussiness in Nicosia so i would like to believe that in a few years the first real high rises will be built.
Several cypriot construction companies have experiance in high rises construction abroad like j&p, chapo and cybargo
Already living in a modern appartment is a sort of fashion here.

What I like about the Cypriots is that they will probably build a cute mini-highrise business centre with green spaces, etc...

Cyprus will be once again found in the forefront and yes, some of Europe's leading construction firms are from there... :)

there is already a new business center being formed at the entrance of nicosia from the limassol-nicosia motorway.
in this new business area the following companies have their headquarters: laiki trapeza,elliniki trapeza (both have really nice buildings,laiki has a very modern one and elliniki a more conservative one but still very nice), cypriot olympic comittee ,which is almost complete(i posted the designs of this one in the other thread about cyprus) , louis tours(owner of several cruiseliners and hotels in both greece and cyprus) and the headquarters of the cypriot electricity authority.

in the near future(by summer of 2007) a new ikea ,a carrefour supermarket and a commercial center will open in the nearby area. i will post the pics of this commercial center in the other thread about cyprus

Το ελληνιστικό θέατρο αποκαλύπτεται

Ένα καταπληκτικό θέατρο οκτώ χιλιάδων θέσεων έρχεται στην επιφάνεια από την αρχαιολογική σκαπάνη των Αυστραλών. Το θέατρο «έζησε» εξακόσια χρόνια πριν πληγεί από το σεισμό του 365 μ.Χ.

Το μεγαλοπρεπές και μοναδικό Ελληνιστικό θέατρο στην Κάτω Πάφο άρχισε σιγά σιγά να αποκαλύπτεται απο την αρχαιολογική αυστραλιανή αποστολή η οποία ανασκάπτει το χώρο τα τελευταία 11 χρόνια.

Επικεφαλής της αποστολής είναι ο καθηγητής Richard Green απο το Πανεπιστήμιο του Σίδνεϊ. Για πρώτη φορά φέτος αποκαλύπτεται ολόκληρο το ημικύκλιο του θεάτρου και σύμφωνα με το κ. Green μπορεί να εκτιμηθεί η χωρητικότητα του θεάτρου το οποίο πιθανόν να ξεπερνά τις 8.000 θέσεις. Ένα μεγάλο του μέρος έχει καταστραφεί από τους σεισμούς ενώ σημαντικές ζημιές υπέστη και το μέρος του θεάτρου που ήταν λαξευτό στο βράχο λόγω της λατόμευσης. Το Ελληνιστικό θέατρο της Πάφου που είναι στη νότια πλευρά του λόφου Φάμπρικα όπως ονομάζεται σήμερα, υπολογίζεται ότι κατασκευάστηκε το 300 π.χ και λειτουργούσε με πολύ μικρές αλλαγές μέχρι το σεισμό του 365 μ.χ. Στη συνέχεια ανακατασκευάστηκε, κάτι που είναι εμφανές από τα ευρήματα των αρχαιολόγων. Η ανασκαφή της Αυστραλιανής αποστολής στο Ελληνιστικό θέατρο θεωρείται από τις σημαντικότερες που διεξάγονται αυτή την περίοδο στην Κύπρο. Η δράση της άρχισε το 1995 και αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί τα απόμενα 3-4 χρόνια. Φέτος στην ανασκαφή εργάζονται από τη 1η Απριλίου 50 περίπου φοιτητές εθελοντές. Η ανασκαφή θα διαρκέσει μέχρι τις 15 Μαΐου.

Στη διάρκεια της ανασκαφής η αποστολή επιτρέπει δύο φορές την εβδομάδα την επίσκεψη του κοινού και την ξενάγηση στο χώρο. Σύμφωνα με το διευθυντή του τμήματος αρχαιοτήτων Παύλο Φλουρέντζο το αργότερο σε 5 χρόνια η ανασκαφή του αρχαίου Ελληνιστικού θεάτρου στη Κάτω Πάφο θα ολοκληρωθεί και είναι πολύ πιθανόν να μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για διάφορες εκδηλώσεις. Στη περιοχή του Ελληνιστικού θεάτρου θα προχωρήσουν αμέσως και οι κατεδαφίσεις των κατοικιών που απαλλοτριώθηκαν από το τμήμα αρχαιοτήτων ώστε να αξιοποιηθεί ευρύτερα ο χώρος. Σύμφωνα με τον κ. Φλουρέντζο το Ελληνιστικό θέατρο θα μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για διάφορες εκδηλώσεις αφού η χωρητικότητα του θα είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερη από το αρχαίο ωδείο. Κατά καιρούς είχαν γίνει σκέψεις από το Δήμο Πάφου για την επίσπευση της ανασκαφής ώστε το Ελληνιστικό θέατρο να χρησιμοποιηθεί για τη διοργάνωση εκδηλώσεων. Αν τελικά με την αποκάλυψη ολόκληρου του θεάτρου και της αναστήλωσης που θα ακολουθήσει η χωρητικότητα του κυμανθεί στις 2000 θέσεις θα επιλύσει ένα πολύ μεγάλο πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζει η Πάφος λόγω της έλλειψης ανοιχτού υπαίθριου αμφιθεάτρου.

the following pics are from a recent excursion i went a few days ago. the place is called agios georgios tou alamanou and its about 20km from limassol.
there is a monastery there and a few hundred meters away from it its the sea.
