^^

What a contrast between Bandra W and Worli. Bandra W is very dense and deprived of open space with all those low/ mid rises. Andheri W should be even worse with taller (than Bandra) buildings and no open space.

Well it is the Worli fishermen's village. The only thing they should do about it is give them proper housing.

The Worli Fort and the surrounding area should be made into a proper waterfront area for tourists and give the Worli fishing village proper housing.

It will not happen any time soon. They have not been able to do anything with the Colaba/Nariman point areas as well. There are just plans, more plans and even more plans. Unfortunately there is vested interest amongst sections of politicians, bureacrats, social activists and NGOs to maintain the status quo of hopelessness.

Mumbai's primary skyline is composed of residential blocks, something that is hidden in the background in most cities whose primary skyline comprises the CBD.

Maybe because buildings are old and most of them have same colour (off white). It still doesn't looks that bad but the worse thing in Mumbai is the advertisement hoardings everywhere. BMC should keep a check on their numbers instead of just looking for revenues.

Nariman Point always interests me.

Most of the buildings should be re-cladded here to give it a more 21st look and feel eps. Express Towers.

The Trident, Oberoi and Air India Buildings are very well maintained & still look modern even though they are old buildings.

bhargavsura
March 17th, 2010, 04:06 PM
Yeah. I kinda agree. They should start doing that. They are coming up with so many redevelopment plans at NP that you get lost on what are they doing. But again I feel that areas like VT/CST and Flora Fountain should be more organized. It could still be made better.

wow !! that is some compilation of pics. Brilliant.

The slums are the sore thumb as usual.

:bash:

Methinks in a timeline ... beyond 'Right Now' re: slums

Therfore, Mumbai is the world's biggest under-exploited metropolis. So much develop-able land OMG! Slums, Salt Pans, low rise colonies, run down buildings ...

Future is very bright for intensification in Mumbai ...
Slums, Salt Pans, low rise colonies, run down buildings ...
are the world's biggest builder/developer/real-estate opportunity ... all that is needed are real-life facilitators ... netas if u will ... who can balance profit-greed-need of all stakeholders involved ... ppl. with VISION!

Good news is that is now happening ... we in this thread, media, Globalisation (Slumdog Millionaire), moonshots, nukes is giving Mumbai and India a sense of INDIA-A National Identity ... beyond I, Me, Mine & my village (... hehe ... Jai Kisan, Jai Jawan no more )

Things are changing rapidly ... best thing is die-hard oldtimers ... the aged ... socialists, unionists, gandhiits types who put a spanner in the way of progress are dying out ... Indians of Gen. next are a more confident, less insecure ... more 'Indianised' .... more progressive ...

More get-up-&-go attitude needed.

One day, I'm not sure how soon, Mumbai is going to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And the best.

Euro ur Hindi is kinda wack.. samjhoge isnt the same as samjho gaye :lol::lol:
(dont take it personally, it happens when you live abroad) :)

I agree with part 1 above, give it 10 yrs. Part 2 ... hehe ...

Mum-Pu (...hehe just made it up:)) corridor is AWESOME.
Mark my words, Mumbai-Pune corridor ... and Mumbai-Pune-Goa (... Mumpug anyone) triangle ... hehe ... I hope I haven'nt trigerred any separatist ideas ... could turn into the best 'country' in the world! MumPu

Another awesome wonder is the Narmada dam + Mumbai-Delhi Corridor coming up (... never mind the bs re: Narmada ...) this is leading to densification of arid habitat, hopefully take some pressure off of Bihari-Bhaiyya types on Mumbai & Delhi with support staff work in farms, factories, labour for construction, drivers etc. while the locals get into setting up industry and white-blue collar work.

For now, India's cities are ghettoised, slumdogged and construction zones ... but for those who look at India as retirement home or pensioners paradise ... check out the thread on Lavasa, Amby Valley ... that's how our cities will look in the future. I mean it, it's no big deal really ... except in the past socialists, communists, unionists froze progress as there was too much British (cities, factories, mills, railways, banks, airlines ... all loo ... sorry 'nationalised' ... or ghettoised maybe the right word)stuff leftover from the empire ... to loot!

Why work when 1 could pass laws to loot ... for eg. why does every city still have huge 'Cantonment' ... these were built to segregate and protect 'goras' from the ... hehe ... natives ... why army/navy don't privatise ... sell .... and move to real bases out of town ... because its loot ... free!

Why .. hehe ... salt pans in Mumbai city ... because Gandhi (nothing against Gandhi but those who perverted his ideas) said so

lol, what's to fight about, mate? Villa Leocadia isn't mine, unfortunately. You've got to look beyond the disrespect the owners have doled out to their property. It's an absolute stunner. Don't know about the owners, but I hope they see the light someday, before its too late.

This bungalow looks very familiar. I might have been in there way back in 90s. No Kidding. The architecture was exactly the same, two storey, same old condition, the fencing and the gate, the landscaping, corner bungalow in Khar. This world is pretty small, you never know. Great images, KB. Every once in a while we have people asking why commercial skyscrapers aren't being constructed in town. The answer lies in your images. These cool grade-A buildings are eating up all the demand for office space.

The best place to be on a Diwali night is someone's house, drinking. Honestly though, I'd rather watch the lights (minus the noise, smoke, and the masses) from the hill further north.

that area is in a flood zone through.

but its very centrally located in terms of the MMR

when completed I think we will see about 100million sqaure feet of office space in that general area

I was wondering how the renovations on CST where going as it did look rundown and neglected.

It will look awesome once the dome is complete and look majestic again.

taxi or bus

no autorickshaws in south bombay either

I am talking about commutes within the residential sectors. Buses are not available inside the colonies/residential sectors. For example you may need to go to the main road for nearest bus stop which is 0.5 km away from your house. In that case, how people manage. Calling a taxi for riding a bus looks unlikely.

lol people walk dude

it takes 6-7 minutes to walk 0.5km for an average person.

I dont understand your question. Most mumbaikars walk-train/bus-walk to work. Very few of overall mumbaikars take a car to work.

when i commuted from Mulund east to Matunga during my college years

I walked to mulund station(about 0.6km)-I took a train to Matunga- and i walked to my college(about 1km) the whole thing took me about 1 hour (from house to college)

Many people here use their personal vehicles for long distance commute and use use cycle rickshaws for short distance. Also people use them from say bus stop or metro station to their home. I prefer walking, except in a hot summer noon.

well thats just screwed up IMO

I have visited NYC and London as a tourist and even in those place most people walk to their destination 1km away

1km is what 12min walk?

I remember walking with an umbrella even in the heavy monsoons.

keeps ya fit as well.

Obviously if i have a private car then i would use it especially in the monsoon. But no cycle rickshaw.

Might as well buy a cycle and use that yourself for 2-3 min.
