The building should represent the behemoth the bank is. The previous HQ at Apollo Street Horniman Circle was really cool. This current building sucks big time . This is the building I am talkin about. Anybody has a bigger picture? http://www.stampsofindia.com/lists/stamps/fdc/2005/sbi.jpg nik December 22nd, 2005, 09:54 PM Which building is this? http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/1341/49721290eed307d410od9ki.jpg Look at those chawls near by. At least some from early 19th century should be kept as heritage. as heritage stuff Suncity January 8th, 2006, 03:36 PM The tiles are that of textile mills I suppose. At least some from early 19th century should be kept as heritage. as heritage stuff As far as heritage is concerned we should be careful about trying to maintain everything as heritage. It's very expensive to maintain some of these old buildings and factories. Herirtage is like culture - we need to get rid of what's no longer in sync with times, adapt new stuff but also retain some core values. I personally find maintaining huge old factory buildings as Mumbai's heriatge a bit over the top.. One or two as part of preserving history is fine. Maybe they could be adapted to house museums or art galleries etc as suggested by some. But here is where I find the big rub. Many of the heriatge / conservations/leading lights of socialism, protest about highrises, malls and exclusion of the poor but on the other hand talk of maintaining factory shells, building museums, art galleries, auditoriums etc. Now what exactly will the poor, who are busy working for two meals a day, get time to go to exclusive places like art galleries displaying Picasso's work or Museum's showing Egypt's heritage or auditoriums hosting the Russina Ballet? No one is interested in fixing the base problem - poverty, low paying jobs, illiteracy, too much migration, unaffordable housing. Everything is quickfix, populist and playing to the gallery. _____________ Coming to your question: I believe they are old housing. Not sure if they are part of any ex factory. Here is a photo (grainy) one of Colaba. There is a defunct factory (Mukesh Mills?) here. Also note the Sassoon dock (fisherman's dock). Remember this area was once a cluster of fishing villages till more land was reclaimed and highrises were added later on. That's the reason south Mumbai looks such a strange mix of highrise towers and ramshackle fishing villages. It's an example of bad city planning. The fishermen had nowhere to go and nobody ever thought of how to rehabilitate them properly. So they went to court and won the right to remain there and carry on their trade. Now we thus have strips of poverty surrounding islands of prosperity. http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/1039/colabavinu9rf.jpg Suncity January 8th, 2006, 04:06 PM A panorma (created from some pics found here (http://www.lokhandwalabuilders.com/LB/stillpics-queenscourt.htm)), of the mill areas of central Mumbai: http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/1286/centralmumbaipano13cw.jpg Suncity January 8th, 2006, 04:29 PM Night shots by Hawkeye (Murali). It is driven by a positive economy, highly conducive interest rates, soaring purchasing power in the middle class, improving suburban development and greater transparency in the real estate sector. Perhaps that explains the consistent demand, despite a good current supply and a massive future stock. The city also offers a boom in sectors like media, shipping and construction. Salaries in the city have gone up by an average 30 per cent and much of this has gone into real estate. Real estate research firm Jones Lang LaSalle says developers have reported an increase in demand across all budget segments. It notes that the suburban areas of the city are currently witnessing the highest levels of construction and sale activity. "The stretch from Goregaon to Kandivili in the western suburbs and Mulund to Thane in the central suburbs are hotbeds of residential activity. given the robust level of demand and increased steel and cement prices, residential prices are expected to firm up further in the next two quarters and increased prices are expected to sustain the high-end user demand. Thus, developers are likely to continue to focus on premium projects not only in the high-end locations of south and central Mumbai but across the suburban locations. One such project being the up-coming tallest residential tower in India by construction firm Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Ltd. Located in Tardeo.
