to be honest with you , in the late 90s when i was a kid, I used to cycle with my friends all the way from Mulund to sion/andheri in the summer holidays. Took me about 1hour.

but today with the traffic and all its a safety hazard and the pollution from the gridlocks is just horrible. On top of which I think i have lost my stamina for such long sprints

Mumbai will do well to have cycle lanes. Many people (especially the poor) would use them to get from one place to another safely and quickly without costing much

I have visited NYC and London as a tourist and even in those place most people walk to their destination 1km away

nyc and london are not comparable to indian cities for walking. besides having much superior conditions for pedestrians even the weather is a lot more conducive to walking. i used to walk 2-3 hours a day pretty comfortably in london. at least 1.5 hours a day mimimum

but yeah, even in bombay i wouldnt use public transport for short distances. if i am at churchgate and need to get to nariman point or regal circle i'll walk, unless its raining

huh? Delhiites (exluding most in South Delhi) just have a cheaper mode of transportation that makes them to take cycle riks to nearby areas. The moment you ban them, you'll see people on the streets. The opposite is true for South Bombay. Remove the ban and you'll see those black and yellow cretins zipping around with a good ridership number.

The walk wasn't that bad. I usually walk more while checking out new cities. It's the best way to get a feel of a city as compared to seeing everything from a car. The original plan (which the driver thought was ridiculous) was to go all the way up to Atria but with little light left and plans for the night, I settled for the dargah.

yeah, i love walking in cities i visit as well. when i visit europe, tokyo, nyc, etc then most of my day travel is by walking. but bombay somehow does not have conducive weather, except for 2 months or so

Walking is the best when discovering new cities/places/sightseeing.

Seeing from a car or bus is not the same.

I still walked around Rome, London, Tunis, Malaga, Barcelona etc even when it rained lol so Mumbai shouldn't be any different.

South Mumbai should be a delight to walk around from Nariman Point to Chowpatty and around the Maidans to the Taj Hotel even if it takes all day there are lots of pit stops to eat and drink hehe.

hmm mostly tourists but a few fishing as well.

but many ferries as well for everyday use....so not strictly tourist.

Some are private yachts as well.

certainly think that that is enough space for a hong kong style big ferry from Navi mumbai (nerul downwards)

best way might be to relocate them....

create some sort of passenger terminal and start a bus service from there(so people getting off the boat can catch a short bus ride to Nariman point/fort/Colaba

a large chunk of the boats actually ferry people to and elephanta island.

maybe move them to the sweri area

you do that and you open up Uran

any new service has to be economically affordable for the masses as well since they are the bulk of the users. you also have airconditioned catamarans which take you to mandwa for 120 bucks each way, so its not all old dabbas

Take a short trip a few tens of kilometres down the coast and you'll be amazed at how clean the water is. You should travel around the country more often ;)

I don't think the human brain is capable of comprehending exactly how huge India is. People (especially visitors) extrapolate their experience of about 2 sq kms of land over the entire country.

They're changing the drainage pipes on this one, lets hope they put a fresh coat of paint on it too...

Shreepati Arcade is a strange looking building.

Its elevations are not consistent and looks just hideous.

I could name a few new tall buildings that I would demolish as they look naff and make Mumbai look ugly!

You can see Nehru's awesome rent law at work. The rent freeze of the 1960s means these renters in the buildings are still paying Rs50 rent in 2010. So the owner of the buildings does not have the money or inclination to bother to maintain them...

Its also the reason why slums spread. Nobody wanted to rent out rooms cause the law was heavily on the side of the renter not the land lord. Resulting in lack of houses and thus slums.....

nah i am pretty sure Nehru introduced them after independence. The reason being my grandparents on my moms side were land lords.(nothing big just owned one extra flat).They keep telling me it was in the 1960s when Nehru bought in those laws(maybe to cover all of India?). Our renters pay Rs70 a month.

sadly indian history books and historians have a very one-sided view of india during the british empire. none of its infrastructural feats are properly recorded

what i find most amazing is that all the old (and beautiful) public buildings of bombay have a plaque which states how much money was spent on building it, down to the last rupee. nowadays we dont even know to the nearest crore. hopefully india can adopt some of the best practices of that era and not discard every single thing as evil

its not so simple dude. Many things overlap. with the new delimitation rules things have changed. I did some extra digging up.

As a political entity, for the Maharashtra National assembly the part officially described as Worli includes parts Mahalaxmi Lower Parel and even parts of Prabhadevi

So politically the entire area is known of Worli.

It appears to have started in 16th century and it was gradual.. with no clear records in history..

If you read what is written in the source, Altamount Rd made it to the 10th spot only because they used estimated valuations of floor space inside Antilia to characterize the entire road :nuts:

altamount sells between 50-75k a sq ft. dont know where that puts it

walkeshwar probably gets higher valuations. but altamount has one of the greatest concentrations of the mega-rich

Most of the pictures have been posted earlier. Talking about futuristic, lets just take care of the present state at least. We are in no position to think about the future.

who wouldnt. The western suburbs are over populated ,too much filth ,not too much places to visit except malls and more malls(well there is prithvi rangsharda and prabodhan thackeray, but thats it). Whatever history was associated to the places in the suburbs( gaothans, talavs, wadis) is slowly getting wiped out by greed , builders lobby, and slums .It is only now recently certain section of people in suburbs are fighting to preserve it.

yup. demolished for the new taj hotel

^^hope they build some nice building like four season

Taj plan to build a tall building here and connect it to the existing Taj Lands End but have come into trouble with coastal regulations.

Watch the space for legal wranglings and delays! lol.
