Comming to Mumbai Roads I feel they are good, but City wise I like Mumbai the most, even though I am not from Mumbai.

I belong to neither Delhi or Mumbai, or anywhere near either of those 2 cities, so there is no bias in what I am about to say.

In terms of cleanliness, I'd definitely rate Mumbai ahead of Delhi though Delhi has been improving in recent years. Roads, again are better in Mumbai, though traffic is worse.

And from a neutral perspective, mumbai was more appealing than Delhi in just about every way except prices.

I don't think we need to be getting into inter-city, inter-state fights...after all we come from the same country.

btw, I never had any bad traffic experience during my trips to mumbai. It's just what I've heard from others. In my experiences, the traffic moved a bit more slowly, but I never got stuck in any jam as such

Even some time I wonder about roads.... why people say that Mumbai has bad roads? I m not saying that each and every small or big road of Mumbai is in excellent condition.....but Mumbai has really good roads.... even after rains like hell....still.... Mumbai has good roads... :) trust me even if other cities gets 20% of rains what Mumbai gets.....I m sure ............. rest i m not explaining..... take best guess.... :)

not only that, people actually follow traffic rules in mumbai! Delhi, even if it had the best roads in India would always be chaotic because people are going to try to cram their vehicle in front of yours even if you give them 1 inch of space. The suburbs of delhi are even worse, particularly if you go towards the UP side(Ghaziabad, Noida), they are absolute mayhem, not to mention the potholes, pollution, terrible smells, high crime rate, and aggressive people.

Mumbai is miles ahead.

I completely agree with you. I lived in Delhi for around 13 years and am now in Mumbai. Massive difference. I was actually stumped to see people drive in lane around the city and on the WEH and EEH.

The comparison is with parts of central and South Delhi. And that is true. All other cities are no better.

The problem with Mumbai is that the city doesnt depict good picture for outsiders in their first few visits. While other cities clearly demarcate the business centres and maintain the roads from airport to city centre /busienss centres very well, it is not the case with Mumbai. Mumbai is consistent in providing good/bad roads everywhere , save BKC/SoBo. Outsiders dont visit east/north delhi, west Bangalore or North Chennai frequently. Having said that Mumbai has the best roads when it comes to inner residential areas.

While the babus acknowledge that BKC/SoBo are CBDs and maintain the roads well, it is of no use to create impression unless the entire road from airport has the same quality. And increasingly Lower Parel and Andheri are being visted by the outsiders. These two areas are completly neglected.

The same logic applies for the looks of the city. There is no area completlely free of slums in Mumbai. Everything is everywhere. But then that is the reason why Mumbai is able to give all kinds of products and services to its residents. There is something for everyone in Mumbai.

Its about how blocks are laid. The blocks in the above roads where laid years ago but still it hasnt sunken. The key is to lay cement powder under the paver blocks which prevents them from sinking.

Very nice pics, more wider roads should be the next goal

That should never be something to strive towards. What we need is more sidewalks/pedestrian facilities, more subway lines, underground arteries etc. Wider roads only means more vehicles will occupy them, rendering the idea completely useless. The only solution is efficient traffic management and the enforcement of stringent laws coupled with hefty fines even for the most minor traffic offences.

ofcourse, these all might be true, but look at it realistically, Mumbai holds WAY more people than it's capacity, and we cannot expect people to leave all vehicles and start become eco friendly... I personally think , we see all those dirty roads and traffic because of narrow roads, I believe the habbit of Mumbaikars, chennaites or any other citizen of any other state (with few exceptions ofcourse) towards following traffic rules is bad, due to the same problem, I personally have seen that people are more cautious on highways than in city roads, most probably due to this very reason?? anyone else had the same observation?

even if they start by a decent lanemarking that'd make the roads more navigable and discourage some haphazard driving..none of these roads have any lanings in them...enforcement of laws will work to an extent provided there is zero tolerance policy and none other than a special force is mandated to make it work (similar to the tourism police in Egypt)..else it's difficult to change our good ol' public - the proof is in the many posters stuck up on the the brand new skywalk pillars!

Sure, we can't be expected to get on the public transportation bandwagon just like that, but if there's reason to, that is if there are subway lines across the city, then I don't see why most of us can't? The fact that this city is more densely populated than it should be is reason enough for people to dump their vehicles and switch to cleaner, more efficient modes of public transport, but that's another discussion altogether.

Narrow roads are not the sole cause for traffic problems in this city - it all has to do with traffic management really. This city faces the problems it does because of the way people drive, not because of narrow roads. Illegal parking, cabs usurping bus stops, and in the burbs, the problem of those niggling pests that are popularly known as rickshaws, horrible two-wheelers who think they own the city's roads, and of course, not-so-great enforcement of traffic rules, are to blame for our problems, not road widths. You could have a perfectly "wide" road, but what good is it if the leftmost lanes are jammed with illegally parked cars, taxis, autos, buses, pedestrians, hawkers etc.? The manner in which the RTO issues licences to motorists is the largest problem of all.

Take a two-lane, single-carriageway, mark it perfectly, fine people left, right and centre for violations, and you will see increased speeds and better driving discipline automatically. Motorists drive better/more cautiously on highways, not because they're wider than your average artery, but because they don't have illegally parked vehicles along their shoulders, and also because higher speeds on these roads leaves a smaller margin for error.

In my experience, the width of the road has nothing to do with the way people drive. Wider roads = more cars occupy those roads = plans for more "wide roads" to cope: it's a vicious circle, you see. Your contention that the increase in road widths citywide will somehow bring about a positive change in the way people drive, is a bit simplistic. There are many layers, each of which needs to be addressed at a grassroots level.

What i have noticed is, in Mumbai anything new gets dirty very fast, be it a newly paved road or the pavements or flyovers, the medians painted with yellow and black must be the one which gets dirty on first hand? why do we need to paint the medians when it doesn't serve the purpose? is it the humid climate which is the culprit? or the lack of effective cleaning process? cities like Delhi, Bangalore looks much better in these aspects.

Cool video. Reminds me of that scene from Taare Zameen Par where the kid goes on a ride on Marine Drive. It's on my things to do list whenever I'm next in town.

I agree. That has always puzzled me. In other countries, the medians are just plain grey. That looks way better than the dull yellow and black.

Don't know about Mumbai but it might be due to dust problem. At least in Pune that's the major reason apart from pollution. Sweepers collect and remove accumulated dust everyday here.

In other countries, the medians are just plain grey. That looks way better than the dull yellow and black.
It's mainly for better visibility at night. Personally to me, a dust covered yellow and black is much more visible at night than dust covered white and black.

If you geoposition the image on the map then there's no limit. Otherwise, there's a 2 GB limit which makes it a good alternative to imageshack.

Even today it should be in top 10-15. The problem the ratings are based on data which is not updated in their site. Thus the buildings count is less. You cannot see Vivearia and lots of skyscrapers that are either T/O or U/C in that list. If someone can contact them or some how provide that updated list of buildings that will be great.

These stereotypes must end. Even Rio De Janerio has the favela. Hell, even Hong Kong had some slums. But when we take the name of those cities, we dont only see the slums. I think its because of Slumdog Millionaire, that everyone seems to think that all Mumbai looks like Dharavi. Hate to say this but people like you are also part of the problem. The fact that you are concerned about the type of image that movie created " in the minds of those western people" goes to show that you still look up to care about what they think. Atleast that's the type message people like Amitabh sent across when they reacted to that movie in a such a manner.

We should get rid of slums because we want to provide make better use of the land and provide better living conditions for the people, NOT because we want Westerners to have a better image of India.

A lot of westerners have the same notions of China as being backward , however I notice the most Chinese couldn't give a damn. They know exactly where they stand.

I think part of reasons why Indians care so much is because we get so excited easily and babble on about being this super power, having the best this, and have very little to show for it actually. Remember when T3 opened in Delhi two years? They said it was going to be the world's top 5 ariport within 2 years.. hahah

Exactly. We stupid Indians were so proud of Slumdog millionaire but actually it created a bad image of Mumbai in the minds of those western people and those morons now think that whole India is a big slum.

The fact that many of us sit on our fancy leather couches in air conditioned offices lamenting that the slums are stealing the show, even as those very offices may be overlooking a sea of slum, speaks volumes of an induced myopia in the eyes of the "average" affluent Mumbaikar. Filthy slums have dominated most major cities during their dymanic development phases (be it the East End in Victorian London or the Bronx in turn-of-the-century NY). It would be stupidly arrogant to think that Mumbai is very different. Those cities got rid of slums when incomes drastically improved. Are we Bombaywallah Sahibs ready to let that happen? Will we, say quadruple the salaries of our kaamwali bai or driver? If not, are we willing to do more chores so that they can pursue higher paying jobs? So keep in mind that we rely on the very slums we badmouth, to sustain the pleasure of a semi-luxurious, upper middle class lifestyle that we take for granted.

But that doesn't mean we can't do anything about slums. If we really want to be at the 'top of the world' at something, then lets be the best at implementing innovative ways of managing slums. Rebrand them as the new Gateways of India, doors that open to the limitless possibilities of a thriving city like Mumbai. Beautify them, educate the dwellers on hygiene, install public utilities, implement controls to ensure populations don't exceed capacity, assign zones for entrepreneurship. Promote social mobility to enable dwellers to move out of the slum; honour the achievement of those who 'make it outta the slum' each year... Essentially, lets stop disowning the slums and instead, make them our own.

Finally, remember that the city that (rather snobbishly) proclaims itself the greatest on earth, NY started its journey with the words-
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" - inscribed on its most famous statue.

They said it was going to be the world's top 5 ariport within 2 years.. hahah

I don't give a damn to what western people think about my country.I know we are not perfect but we are trying our best(not exactly though) to be a better place for living. It's just that things get irritating whenever you post something good about our country, those western people jump to say SLUM SLUM things. It's annoying...

As far as slums in Mumbai or Delhi are concerned we don't have to be innovative i guess. It's pretty easy.J:bash::bash::bash:ust rehab those tenants or slum dwellers into highrises and we(the govt) could get acres of precious land in return and sell those to private developers for a substantial amount.A win-win situation for all.The problem here is that lack of honesty and will power as our politicians don't want the slums to be vanished as majority of their vote bank live there.

thats not the point.

Wheather you like it or not Mumbai is competing with other Indian cities and other asian cities as a place to do business.

and image matters when it comes to inflow of FDI. Look at Pakistan, war on terror being beamed 24/7 their FDI has dried up.

Only a fool would want their image being shown in a degrading manner. Even if it is the truth.

Hype does help when it comes to attracting money. I am more than comfortable if they call us a super power. If they mean more inflows into India then sure.... People like it or not, what the west thinks matters. The reason being they have the money which we need to be invested in our country.

As a golden rule, always try to present your best face to the people or entities in position of power. You have a i dont care attitude they wont back you and you will remain a poor dumb idiot.

thats both dangerous and a naive.surprised to hear it from you actually.
banning any freedom of expresion is the short end of the wedge.
Also and more importantly it doesnt work.
theres plenty in the western investment media about the crap side of china. If theres dirt it'll be found. Thats how the free press works. But China is FDI friendlyhats why it has alot of FDI.Simple
Banning them in india would just make the western pres hungrier, mate.
If india as a country cares so much about its image it should simply sort out the issues.
And it has begun to , abeit very slowly
Countries that have attracted FDI where india hasnt have not done so becuase they have pretented its all okm and banned any one from saying otherswise.
they have implemented FDI friendy policies, improved their system of governence, rule of law etc etc.
there are the things that matter not self image.
India is still lagging behind in all these areas
I can tell you countless stories of western entrepeneurs both gorah and NRI whove tried to set up in india.70% just give up after a year of wasted effort.Nothing to do with image at all.

dreadathecontrols has already made excellent points about the impracticality of media censorship in India. I do see your point about projecting a positive image. The solution for that surely cannot be tucking the muck under our carpet... but cleaning it up altogether.

Your concern is a deficit in effective PR for India... I have two points to make:

First, if I can use some marketing terms :), the product always comes before promotion. If the product is flawed, no amount of marketing can fool the customer (in our case foreign investors) for long. There are serious flaws that we need to address, to make our product (Mumbai/India) much more attractive than it already is (dreadathecontrols has already listed policy solutions).

Second, the solution to negative PR is not "No PR at all", but positive counter-PR. My earlier argument was also about re-branding and cleaning up the slums. That can earn a lot of positive PR for Mumbai... "innovative slum management", "slum-dweller awards"... etc etc... The experience can even create possible business opportunities for us in future developing cities with slum problems (in Africa/S.America).

When we don't talk about it, the world knows we have something to be ashamed of. When we acknowledge what we have, make it the best it can be and project the opportunities it presents, the world will respect our confidence and goodwill.

First, if I can use some marketing terms :), the product always comes before promotion. If the product is flawed, no amount of marketing can fool the customer (in our case foreign investors) for long.

Your post for most part make sense but my observation has been that a good marketing beats a good product every time. This observation is especially true for financial products/investments (there are so many examples but US Housing market backed product are a prime example ).

My thoughts, dissent and support both welcome.

Cheers

Ultimately, what happened? Does any one still believe that sub-prime structured products are still good?

I would say, a bad product with good marketing can survive for sometime but is destined to fail. But a good product without any marketing will also fail. Both have to be in right mix.

ps: I think we have to take this to Mumbai discussions before someone complains. They have every right to complain in this thread though I feel weird, if someone complains in metro / airport thread as if this forum is another picasa.
