Raffles City was undertaken in a climate of nation building shortly after Singapore's independence. Upon completion in 1986, the 370,000 m2 project was the largest private commercial development in Southeast Asia with the tallest building in the Far East, the world's tallest hotel, and the largest continuous concrete pour ever attempted.

The complex includes a 39-story office tower, a 1,200-room, 72-story tourist hotel and a more exclusive hotel with 800 guest rooms in two angled 27-story towers. All components are interconnected and rise from a seven-story podium housing shops, health/sports and convention facilities. A central atrium provides the building with its own climate controlled town square; in both density and activity, Raffles is itself a mixed-used city.

An innovative aluminum curtain wall unifies the exterior. The mass of the building is shifted away from the historic Raffles Hotel and toward the grassy Padang. Like a piece of monumental sculpture, the tall cam-shaped tower mysteriously changes profile, appearing curved or orthogonal from different perspectives. No attempt was made to integrate with existing low-rise neighbors of uncertain urban renewal fate. The project was designed to look ahead, not back, and relies on contrast to express its role as a centerpiece of Singapore's redeveloped future.

It is so plain, but I have always liked it. I like how it looks totally round in one elevation, and totally square in the opposite elevation.

Nice and simple. I actually stayed in it once just for the view..stayed at the 54th floor. Standing on the balcony at that height is quite nerve wrecking!

There is a French restaurant at the top.

My hotel when i stayed in Singapore last year was very near this hotel.
i went inside the mall at the base of this hotel, and there is this huge glass ceiling in which you can see this building and another building right from below, it's a very nice view:)
And that mall was very nice too, it is highend

That is the tallest Westin hotel! It is verrrrry cool. 7/10

The best Westin hotel IMO, is the 2nd tallest Westin, the Westin Peachtree. :D

It isn't a box, that's for sure. The circular side looks amazing, while the boxy sides look bland.

5/10 - the curved and straight shape provides a good contrast.

HOWEVER...
I don't know why, but so many of those big cylinders, including this, just don't have any elegance or grace to them...
The cladding is dull, and the window/balcony affairs look more like holes in a cheese grater than any other windows I've seen.

The floors below the roof, with the large windows, might be a good contrast, but they look tacky, somehow...

And, Finally, there's the dreaded flat roof.

Might be nice inside, but nothing much to look at!

I think the simplicity of this building works really well. 9/10

4.5 I think this would have been better as a full cylinder... instead of having the flat side... looks really plain with ugly windows and a horrible top

A pity that the balconies visually "fade into" the main shape of the tower.
What's left is still impressive, but too similar to the impressiveness of -for instance- a lage industrial chimney.

Not one of my favourites but the complex as a whole is nice and the building manages to look quite soaring although I'm not too sure how.
The repetition of the balconies is actually pretty cool and I like how the cladding can give it different colours.
But the shape and base colour is quite dull, I have to say.

Gets 8/10, looks better in reality plus the design is good for its time.
