Yeah it's a very effective design for medieval warfare. Steps in front mean not only will an invading army have to fight uphill, but large siege engines are unusable. The design also allows defenders to place 2 levels of archers - one behind the railing and the other on top of the walls. Should the first line be neutralized there will then be a bottleneck right within convenient range of the second level of archers. And lastly any grunts reaching the door itself and using the battering ram will be subject to crossfire from 3 directions :eek: and perhaps even rocks or boiling oil dropped from above.
