I`ve got the chance to read some of Amichai`s poems and they are beautiful...
How far as I know, he is very famous in Israel
I`d like to know what you think about him.
In the meantime I post one of his poem ;)

The first rain

" The first rain reminds me
Of the rising summer dust.
The rain doesn`t remember the rain of yesteryear.
A year is a trained beast with no memories.

Soon you will again wear your harnesses,
Beautiful and embroidered to hold
Sheer stockings: you
Mare an harnesser in one body.

The white panic of soft flesh
In the panic of a sudden vision
Of ancient saints. "

Yes, the man was a true giant. He is much missed in the Israeli literary scene. I met him once at the "week of the book celebrations" in the year 2000. He was already terribly terribly ill. Broke my heart to see him like that.

One of his books that was never translated into English is the novel "lo me'achshav, lo mikan" fantastic. In English are available: poems of love and poems of Jerusalem, as well as a few other selections, mostly published by academic presses.
