So you will have to say Cluj was a British, Belgian, and French town at once, since the architectural styles present come from those countries, rather than Austria-Hungary.

With the exception of secession, Austrians haven't "invented" any architectural "style". But even secession is simply a branch of Art-Noveau.

The architecture of Cluj same as that of other big cities of Transilvania matches the architecture of the empire it belonged to.

Some of the buildings were built in a period of aggressive nationalistic policy of the ruling hungarian administration toward the end of the KuK Monarchy. For it and for the much longer discrimination of the romanian ethnics the hungarian administration took consequences almost one century ago, so it's no point to discuss this any longer

Palaces are always built by the ruling class, but it's always the ordinary men paying for - as simply as that.
In Cluj the architecture ist very typical for the habsburg austro-hungarian empire, having hardly any typical hungarian elements.
It is representative for the ruling class of the time, same as the concret blocks 40-80 years later were representative for a communist regime.

Something rather specific hungarian i guess is the Teleki palace in Tg. Mures.

Just a reminder to whom it may concern that Matei Corvin ( Matthias Corvinus) was born in Transilvania (not Hungary) and was the son of a vlah (Romanian) who became regent of Hungary

Matthias was born in the house currently known as "Matthias Corvinus House" in Kolozsvár/Klausenburg (present-day Cluj-Napoca), Transylvania, the second son of John Hunyadi – a successful Vlach military leader, who had risen through the ranks of the nobility to become regent of Hungary –, and Erzsébet Szilágyi, from a Hungarian noble family. The later epithet Corvinus was coined by Matthias' biographer, the Italian Antonio Bonfini, who claimed that the Hunyadi family (whose coat of arms depicts a raven—corvus in Latin) descended from the ancient Roman gens (Romanian genes) of the Corvini.

When are you guys going to realize that nationalism is a modern invention, as is the consensus among virtually all serious scholars on nationalism. Before the second half of the 18th century, communities were predminantly local, there was no such thing as a national imagined community (a term coined by Benedict Anderson). There was no such thing as a Romanian nation, and no such thing as a Hungarian nation in the sense that those people felt connected with each other. There was no standardised language and there was no national media so there was no way to feel an interconnection between members of the state.

Furthermore, states were ruled by the nobility, who were given the authority to rule the country by God as people believed. The European nobility was and still is one big family (for instance, the Russian tsars spoke French) and only from the 19th century on the monarchs start to identify with the country they ruled (learned the language, and in the case of the British royal family changed their name to make it sound less German -> Windsor).

Nationalism is a sort of side-effect of industrialisation, as Ernest Gellner and more or less Benedict Anderson proposed. On the one hand, industrialisation asked for a homogenous population and the governed persued this with a nation-building policy (introduction of state schooling in a standardized national language) and on the other hand the indistrialisation was making people concious of their shared identity because they spake the same standardized language, read the same newspaper and made careers in the same capital city (people from all over France made their careers in Paris, creating a shared identity despite the fact that they came from very different areas. This last nationalism, that of Anderson, is sometimes called bottom-up nationalism, the nationalism that occurred in the bourgeoisie at first. A good example of this nationalism is the French revolution of 1789.

It is probably hard for you to imagine, but a national identity did not exist in that time. People who wanted to make career changed their faith to the one that was recognized by the state (in this case, Roman Catholic) and began to speak Hungarian, because that is the language of the nobility. They did this without any reluctance, because language in that time was not a part of a national identity, it had only a functional purpose, namely that of communication. Many Hungarians in Transylvania probably have Romanian roots.

But that doesn't make them less Hungarian, national and ethic identity are only relevant when it means something for a person, there is no such thing as Romanian blood or Hungarian blood streaming through the veins of those people.

I'm appaled by the way some people on this forum constitute the Romanian identity in an ethnic way. "Transylvania is now ours", "Cluj is now ours" etc. Why not say that Transylvania is a multicultural region with a rich German, Hungarian and Romanian cultural heritage. Transylvania is Hungarian, German and Romanian. Why not constitute Romanian nationalism in a civic way, like in France or the United States. In the U.S. it doesn't matter to which ethnic group you belong ("we are all immigrants"), as long as you believe in the American Dream, as long as you respect freedom and democracy (those two terms for a large part constitute American nationalism) and as long as you participate in society, you are American.

Translated to the Romanian context, no matter what language you speak at home and no matter what to ahich ethnic group you belong, you are Romanian as long as you believe in Romania and participate in society. Romania, and especially Transylvania is multi-ethnic. Hungarians won't disappear; you have to live with that. The only way you can include all people of your country in a national identity is when you constitute it in a civic way.

yes, indeed, it s fresh still, as in the time it was build, that is 70's.
and if u can see in our times this architecture is used as large scale, to express modernity in our cities. only some of new developments cannot remain 'fresh' after many years, cause of superficiality and fast changing world.

BTW, this is Romtelecum building, having since 2-3 years a new addition:

When are you guys going to realize that nationalism is a modern invention, as is the consensus among virtually all serious scholars on nationalism. Before the second half of the 18th century, communities were predminantly local, there was no such thing as a national imagined community (a term coined by Benedict Anderson). There was no such thing as a Romanian nation, and no such thing as a Hungarian nation in the sense that those people felt connected with each other. There was no standardised language and there was no national media so there was no way to feel an interconnection between members of the state.

I contradict you. Yes, there was a Romanian nation before the 18th century which manifested in the unification of the 3 Romanian provinces (Moldova, Transilvania and Valahia) in the year 1600 by the Romanian (Valahian) king Michael (who was aware of the similar language and origins of the inhabitants of such provinces), by the fact that many Western and local historians recognized the similar language of the people of the 3 provinces and the fact that had a common origin stemming from the Romans.

A good example of this nationalism is the French revolution of 1789

No, I do not agree that nationalism in Romania came along industrialisation. Nationalism in Romania, as pointed above was always present (as in other nations I believe) but manifested itself at best when empires fell (Ottoman and Austrian) and allowed the 3 provinces to unite the nation into a sole country.

I'm appaled by the way some people on this forum constitute the Romanian identity in an ethnic way. "Transylvania is now ours", "Cluj is now ours" etc.

Now I get to see that you read a lot of books but are not in touch with the news in the countries you comment on with so much confidence. There is no problem among the different nationalities living in Romania and Transilvania. Poeple are doing just fine until some politicians are starting to inflame things up. And more recently, it is Hungarian politicians who are extremists and not the Romanian politicians.

Anyways, I am very angry at the West giving Romania lessons on how to behave with minorities considering the recent events in Italy. Romania has now one of the best minority regime in EU. Let me ask you one question: Hungarian minority in Romania is smaller than the muslim minority in Netherlands. Are muslims in Netherlands members of the Parliament and Cabinet? Does Holland put Arabic names on its cities? Until you do that, Netherlands is not a country to teach us respect for minorities.

Calvary Church, the oldest church in Cluj, built somewhere around 1060-1095.
First time mentioned in the IXth century as "Monasterium Beatae Mariae de Clus.
From its title "Monasterium" comes the name of the area "Manastur".

class_aladin are perfecta dreptate.

A few pictures from Gherla.

Gherla is a town about 40 km NE of Cluj and has a population of 22 000. In the XVIII-th century it was inhabited by a large number of armenians and was called Armenopolis. The town center is full of baroque houses built by them and is dominated by the Armenian-Catholic Church which i've read that hosts a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. Unfourtunately it was closed when I was there so I couln't visit it.

Cand vine un strain in Romania zice: Aici e Europa???

In sec. XX a venit comunismul si astfel am ajuns asa cum suntem.

Cand vine un strain in Romania zice: Aici e Europa???

Thanks for your kind words.
The city has more of an economical role for the region than a touristic one and you're right, it wasn't promoted much internationally.
