Basically it's a religious Holiday called Purim, it commemorates something the liberation from Persia (see here for the DRY details :lol: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purim).

For secular Israelis it's just a holiday where you wear costumes, eat some special coockies and also drink a lot!!! (you're supposed to drink until you can't tell your left side from your right, but you don't have to if you don't like it. :D I do... :cheers: )

One interesting point, the first (or second?) wife of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, was 1/4 Jewish. So Esther and her were Jewish Queens of Persia/Iran 2,500 years apart, although the more recent one was only partly Jewish.
