The Barbary Atlas Lion

The former popularity of the Barbary Lion as a zoo animal provides the only hope to ever see it again in the wild in North Africa. After years of research into the science of the Barbary Lion and stories of surviving examples, WildLink International, in collaboration with Oxford University, launched their ambitious International Barbary Lion Project. They are using the very latest DNA techniques to identify the DNA 'fingerprint' of the Barbary Lion subspecies. WildLink International has taken bone samples from remains of Barbary Lions in Museums across Europe, like those in Brussels, Paris, Turin and others. These samples are returned to Oxford University where the science team is extracting the DNA sequence that identifies the Barbary as a separate subspecies. Although the Barbary is officially extinct, WildLink International had identified a handful of lions in captivity around the world that are descended from the original Barbary Lion, like the royal lions in Temara Zoo in Rabat, Morocco. These descendants will be tested against the DNA fingerprint and the degree of any hybridisation (from crossbreeding) can then be determined. The best candidates will then enter a selective breeding programme that will 'breed back' the Barbary Lion. The final phase of the project will see the lions released into a National Park in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. WildLink International can not be reached anymore and their website is nowadays offline. Everyone is in the dark as to what happened to WildLink International. WildLink International and the University of Oxford had made the deal that WildLink International would raise money for the project and that the university would do the research. With the disappearance of WildLink International no money was raised. Dr. Noboyuki Yamaguchi, a scientist from the University of Oxford, has used his own funding for as long as possible to further the scientific research on Barbary Lions and its genetics. The project is now indefinitely on hold until the funds can be raise

The Barbary Macaque

The Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus) is a tail-less macaque. Found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco with a small, possibly introduced, population in Gibraltar, the Barbary Macaque is one of the best-known Old World monkey species. Besides humans, they are the only primates that live freely in Europe. Although the species is commonly referred to as the "Barbary Ape", the Barbary Macaque is a true monkey, not an ape

There are Atlas Panthers too. Many years ago, we were thinking they all got killed and Morocco annouced their extinction. But some explorers found a group of them in the Atlas Mountains !

Jardin zoologique de Rabat : 2ème naissance de lionceaux de l'Atlas

Le jardin zoologique national de Rabat a connu la naissance de 2 lionceaux de l'Atlas dans de bonnes conditions, bénéficiant d'un suivi vétérinaire en matière de vaccination et de soins, selon un communiqué du zoo. La lionne qui a donné naissance à ces 2 lionceaux se porte bien et se trouve avec ses petits dans un espace séparé leur étant réservé. Ils font également l'objet de toute l'attention du personnel du Jardin zoologique national. Cette naissance fait suite à celle de "Layth", "Rose" et "Rosa", les 3 lionceaux nés en décembre 2011, et qui sont exposés en famille depuis le 9 avril dans la zone du zoo simulant l'habitat naturel de la savane.

An endemic and endangered species found only in Morocco (Sidi Ifni, Draa Valley) and unfortunately threatened by ignorance (almost extinct in Draa and Souss) since they're very prized by Aïssaouis who sell them for up to 5000DH to fake snake charmers in Jamaa Fna (who sew their mouth leaving only a hole so their tongue can stick out. Usually they die after 3 months, from infection and starvation) --->

They're extinct (not almost). The last one was shot near Ifrane in 1921. By the way since you're from Meknes, up to 19th century there were still lions in Jbel Zerhoun.

-They lived in mountains and forests (unlike the African Lion)
-They were larger than their African and Asian counterparts.
-They lived in caves and holes.
-They were solitary (they didn't live in prides).
-They had huge dark manes (probably due to their relatively cold habitat).
-They're probably extinct in captivity too. Since the few individuals claimed to be barbary lions are not genetically pure (including those of Rabat Zoo).
