View Full Version : Bcherri
Lirtain March 6th, 2007, 05:45 AM Bcharre, 1400 meters high and 120 km from Beirut, is a mountain town in a touristic area in north Lebanon and is at the top of the Qadisha valley
and just below the Cedars forest and the Cedars Skiing resort. Bcharre is the hometown and resting place of Gibran Khalil Gibran (1883-1931) the
mystic poet, painter and philosopher.
The journey to Bcharre passes through some of Lebanon's most spectacular scenery. The mountain road winds through the countryside where
houses cling precariously to the cliffs, and a patchwork of vineyards and olive groves stretch out into the lush valleys. One of the country's
most unforgettable vistas is of the Qadisha valley (a world heritage site) which plunges down toward the coast from the Cedars.
The Cedars grove in Bcharre, known as Horsh Arz Al Rab (a world heritage site), is perhaps the best place to see the huge and majestic Cedars
of Lebanon as it contains some ancient trees. Among its Cedars are some 400 ancient ones and some of them are more than 1500 years old.
The grove sits in Lebanon's highest mountain range, on Mount Makmel. From the summit of the mountain you have a panoramic view of the coast
of Lebanon, and on a clear day you can see the island of Cyprus.

ainmreisiot January 2nd, 2008, 11:05 AM The town is not wealthy, but it will lose out on the chance of developing as a tourism site if the local municipality doesn't step in soon with some design requirements. They could make hipped or pyramidical roofs a requirement for example. Even if tiling is too expensive now, at least the structures could be made ready.
Aside from that, I think Becharre and many mountain villages need a 'town square' initiative. They are developing spread out along the roads, with no real central heart for the communities to gather in. Please, anyone, correct me if you know of other exceptions, but for now, I can only think of Deir el Amar and Ehden as villages that have a central square as a gathering/anchoring point.
LeB.Fr January 2nd, 2008, 01:19 PM ^^ A lot of villages in South Lebanon also have a central square where people gather...

Tama February 16th, 2008, 12:37 PM Did you know that there are lots of Lebanese from this city in New Zealand. They mainly settled in clusters in a city called Dunedin.
Abu 3Leish February 16th, 2008, 10:00 PM ya well we lebanese eventually found a way to take over the world our way :P
Tama February 17th, 2008, 02:47 AM ^^I didn't know that,thanx for the info :)
Also another fact, Lebanese introduced commercial winemaking into New Zealand.

Abu 3Leish February 17th, 2008, 02:40 PM :lol:there isnt a mosque within 80 km of bcharre!!
JustLebanese February 17th, 2008, 02:50 PM :lol:there isnt a mosque within 80 km of bcharre!!
Why not ? ;) Is it illegal to build one ? Or is it not allowd for a muslim to be there ;) ?
þopsï February 17th, 2008, 03:02 PM it is because Bcharre's population is mostly/only Christian.
-It's legal to build a mosque , church anywhere in Lebanon
-A Lebanese can go wherever he wants whether he is Muslim or Christian .
Abu 3Leish February 17th, 2008, 03:03 PM thx beirut guy i had one hell of a time i actually had to sneak out of the hotel while every1 was sleepin to get the pics.............no justlebanese its not that but its a christian area and there are no muslim villages anywere near it ......as a matter of fact the neasrest muslim town from bcharre is the city of tripoli ,and just 4 info we dont have any area in lebanon where its not allowed for a person to enter according to religion....
Tama February 18th, 2008, 02:44 PM Wow what a beautiful city, it looks so beautiful in white snow. Now I am confused why Lebanese would leave this place to come to Dunedin of all places.

and does it have a town council?
Do you know if Becharre now has a building code or at least a campaign to raise awareness of the need to restore/maintain the town's character?

It does have a baladieh, check http://localiban.org/spip.php?article3108
I remember visiting Bcharré only once in 1975. All the houses had the red tiled roofs. I don't know if it is a building code or a tradition.

melkart March 16th, 2012, 08:49 PM @ Hassoun in regards of the video u posted above (bcharre regeneration)
I think every municipality should have an Urban Planning department and a Masterplan. This will insure an orderly and well thought of development of a particular city or town. It will benefit the community as a whole. Designing a building as a stand alone structure with disregard to the surrounding urban fabric is foolish and will have negative repercussions in the long term; not to mention an impact on the economical well being of a city/town. so based on the video above it sounds to me that there is some sort of attempt at organizing our communities. It's hopeful and should be encouraged!
