For the next two months they are doing a sort of survey of contemporary German artists. Neo-Rauch has an exhibit in the back room (large gallery) that is surreal, Stalinist, pop-art...ish and incredibly beautiful/disturbing. If you get a chance, you should stop by. If you don't like it, you don't have to donate and can see it for free. The only thing you have to risk is about 30 minutes. Can you suggest anything else we should see in town this month?

That sounds kinda cool. Where is the Frye?

If you are into this kind of stuff the Pacific Northest Ballet opens this month with Wheeldon, Duato and Balanchine
March 15–25, 2007

March's mighty mixed-repertory introduces audiences to choreography's international superstar, Christopher Wheeldon, with his exquisitely musical Polyphonia, hailed "A major ballet" by The New York Times' Anna Kisselgoff. The Seattle premiere of George Balanchine's eerie La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) makes its sumptuously costumed debut, and Nacho Duato's haunting Rassemblement returns to the stage in honor of ballerina Ariana Lallone's 20th Anniversary with PNB.

Polyphonia seems pretty cool, it's nothing that will amaze you but it does have some good choreography set to some really good music by György Ligeti (music from the movie Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's last film)
Rassemblement is an amazing ultra contemporary piece from Nacho Duato (one of the greatest choreographers to ever live) I love this ballet despite the fact that is hardly ballet at all.
I haven’t really seem much of La Sonnambula yet though its hard to go wrong with George Balanchine.

just FYI if you are interested. :)

First Hill, a block SE of St. James Cathedral. It underwent a big addition and remodel probably 7-8 years ago, at the same time as the UW's Henry. Good second-tier art museum, and free to enter. I'm sorry to say I haven't been in a very long time.

@ Dancer:

My only experience in this medium has been the Nutcracker so I am going to get a couple of tickets and take my girlfriend who watches ballet on 76 but never actually attends one. I haven't even looked it up yet but I don't imagine the cheap seats can be over $50 or $60, right? I guess I don't care, she would love it and it is always gratifying to support the arts.

@ Everyone:

Is there any interest in establishing a "Sights & Sounds" Seattle thread? Somewhere to promote townhall meetings, exhibits, music, performances, $25 at 25, etc...

Oh yes please see something other then the Nutcracker :ohno: I know the Nutcracker is a holiday tradition and all but I think watching ballets that aren’t choreographed with kids in mind are fare more interesting. There are sooooo many great ballets out there that defy peoples idea of what ballet is and I would love for everyone to see more then just the story ballets where there are swans running all around.

Im not sure how this rep is selling but I bet you can get tickets. If not let me know ;) Ive got plenty of comps

Let’s see if we can get the name of this tread changed and maybe once and a wile you can update the first post to show what the latest is in the Seattle area.

I, obviously (as it was my suggestion), like the idea but it definately needs some fine tuning. I think it would be great at promoting culture, arts & current events but it could go out of date very quickly without regular participation, it could be filled with subjective or irrelevant posts and, though I think it is highly unlikely (but I have seen it happen), it could attract spam or adverts. Any suggestions on how to streamline the idea while keeping it of broad interest? Some sort of hybrid of things forum members happened upon around town and an overview of things of interest people saw in the Stranger/Seattle Weekly, maybe? I like this idea because it would expose people to things they might not otherwise check out (art exhibits, ballet, Museum of the Paranormal, new restaurants etc.) and allow us to give recommendations or suggestions but I also see the pitfalls of having such a thread. I also haven't seen any such thread on any of the other city forums, I don't know if that is a good sign or a bad one.

I think it'll be awesome since I loved the movie and matthew bourne! He directed the swan lake that i saw last winter. ES is playing at the fifth avenue theater this spring...it'll be their last stop on their NA tour! I'll be in Europe so I can't watch it. :(

^^Ya I saw his Swan Lake and I thought it was a great idea as well as some great choreography. I might have to check this show out if I’m not performing at the same time.

Why don’t we keep it in this thread for now until we get more feedback from other forumers and maybe a mod or 2? I think you have a great idea though and we should try it. I don’t know how many time I’ve seem threads get hijacked by talk of restaurants and bars (which is a good thing) but this way we would have a thread that is specifically created for this subject as well as other urban life style things.

Prudent. Your suggestion makes a lot of sense to me, that is a great way to go about it. I hope we can find a way to make it work but I would never do it at the expense of the integrity of our new forum.

If anyone has suggestions for how to lay out this thread, please let Dancer or me know about it.

**I hope MOD's don't take any offense from that! We are just trying to hash out something progressive for Seattle.

EMP and SFM slash their ticket price

Experience Music Project and the Science Fiction Museum will cut admission ticket prices by nearly half as part of a new initiative aimed to encourage local and community access. Beginning March 31, combined admission to EMP and SFM will drop from $26.95 to $15 for adults, and from $19.95 to $12 for kids and seniors.

It’s about time! I have always loved the EMP but I have always thought the tickets were a little over priced. I hope this allows more people to go because it really is something to see.

Ivories are brought to life in inventive dance tribute

By Mary Murfin Bayley

Special to The Seattle Times

Most dancegoers are familiar with piano ballets, in which the dancers dance and the piano stays put in a corner of the stage. In Sydney Dance Company's "Grand," performed at Meany Hall, the piano itself dances. The dancers whisk it upstage and down, on a platform, as the pianist valiantly continues playing. Choreographer Graeme Murphy, who has dedicated this work to his pianist mother, Betty Pitt Murphy, has created an entertainingly theatrical tribute to the art of the piano.

This should be cool. I have had the opportunity to meet the Hedges family a few times at various functions and they really are wonderful people. They have been supporting the Ballet for a long time now so I’m excited about this news. I can’t wait to have another excuse to go over to 2200 as well.

Winery abandoning Issaquah perch and moving HQ to downtown Seattle

After eight years in Issaquah, Hedges Family Estate is moving its headquarters to downtown Seattle.

In 1999, the state's 11th-largest winemaker set up its offices and a tasting room in Issaquah, with hopes the town would emerge as a wine center. Now, Hedges is abandoning that experiment in favor of a glitzy loft-style space between downtown Seattle and the city's South Lake Union neighborhood.
