small or big,byzantine or modern, churches have been part of our culture for centuries. some people are religious some are not,but all agree in one thing....our churches are beautiful or at least charming.
i will devote this thread to churches from all over cyprus and their charm...

In contrast with other countries churches are all over the place. You can find a church of a chapel nearly everywhere in cyprus. I'll try and photo some pics of my city Larnaca when I get back for the easter holidays.

Φίλε SK ευχαριστούμε για τις φωτογραφίες. Ετοίμαζα και εγώ ένα ανάλογο thread αλλά πιο εξειδικευμένο για τις παλαιότερες (και πιο όμορφες από όλες τις πλευρές) εκκλησίες της Κύπρου.
Για να μη δημιουργηθούν δύο thread λοιπόν θα πρότεινα να δημοσιεύονται στο παρόν thread φωτογραφίες από τις αξιολογότερες εκκλησίες (ειδικότερα αυτές με ιστορικό ενδιαφέρον) και να αποφύγουμε τσιμεντοκατασκευές των τελευταίων δύο δεκαετιών.
Επιπλέον αν αν ο Κωνσταντινούπολις μπορεί να προσθέσει και ελληνικά στον τίτλο - π.χ. Churches of Cyprus - Εκκλησίες της Κύπρου.

Αγία Παρασκευή Γεροσκήπου - Hagia Paraskevi Geroskipou (11th century)



The church of Agia Paraskevi in Geroskipou is one of the oldest churches in Cyprus. It is in the middle of Geroskipou town, one kilometer from Paphos. It is built in cruciform style, and dates back to the 11th century, with many later additions. It is stone-built and five-domed. Inside the church there are invaluable frescoes.
A five-domed church of about A.D. 1100 dedicated to Agioi Varnavas and Ilarion. It is a vaulted basilica with a nave and two aisles surmounted by five domes, three in a line over the nave and two intersecting the side aisles forming a cross, a unique development in Byzantine architecture. It appears to be a local development from the three-domed basilicas of the Justinian era introduced into the island at an early date. The walls were originally covered with paintings but only traces of these are now visible. The iconostasis dates to the 16th century.

Η εκκλησία της Αγίας Παρασκευής είναι ένα εξαιρετικά σημαντικό δείγμα Βυζαντινής αρχιτεκτονικής, που χρονολογείται στον 9ο αιώνα. Ο αρχιτεκτονικός τύπος του ναού ανήκει στην κατηγορία της τρίκλιτης θολωτής βασιλικής, με πέντε τρούλους. Οι τρεις μεγαλύτεροι τρούλοι βρίσκονται πάνω από το κεντρικό κλίτος και οι δύο μικρότεροι στο μέσο των πλαγίων κλιτών, βόρεια και νότια του κεντρικού τρούλου του μεσαίου κλίτους. Εξωτερικά ο ναός μοιάζει με τον ναό του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα κοντά στη Σαλαμίνα και του Αγίου Λαζάρου στη Λάρνακα.
Στο νοτιοανατολικό άκρο της εκκλησίας είναι προσαρτημένο ένα μικρό τετράκογχο που καλύπτεται με τρουλίσκο. Τα τετράκογχα ήταν διαδεδομένα κατά την παλαιοχριστιανική περίοδο και χρησίμευαν είτε σαν μαρτύρια είτε σαν βαπτιστήρια. Ο δυτικός τοίχος της εκκλησίας γκρεμίστηκε για να επεκταθεί ο ναός, πιθανόν τον 19ο αιώνα. Οι αρχικές είσοδοι του ναού πρέπει να βρίσκονταν στο δυτικό τοίχο.


Κατά την διάρκεια εργασιών καθαρισμού και συντήρησης των διασωθεισών τοιχογραφιών της εκκλησίας, από το Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων την περίοδο 1974-1977, αποκαλύφθηκε ένας μονόχρωμος κοκκινωπός σταυρός πρώιμου τύπου, ζωγραφισμένος απευθείας στην πέτρα, στο νότιο τοίχο του βορείου κλίτους. Τέτοιους σταυρούς συναντάμε κατά την παλαιοχριστιανική περίοδο, μέχρι και τον 8ο-9ο αιώνα. Πρόκειται για μία ανεικονική παράσταση, με κεντρικό θέμα ένα διάλιθο σταυρό, πλαισιωμένο από δύο διακοσμητικές ζώνες με σπείρες και γεωμετρικά μοτίβα. Ο σταυρός, που βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του τρούλου, είναι κατεστραμμένος και σώζει μόνο τα άκρα των κεραιών του. Ο σταυρός αποτελούσε το κατ΄εξοχήν απεικονιζόμενο σύμβολο κατά την περίοδο της Εικονομαχίας, και έτσι το έτος 843 αποτελεί το terminus ante quem για την ανέγερση της εκκλησίας. Πρέπει πάντως να σημειωθεί ότι ανεικονικές τοιχογραφίες εξακολουθούσαν να κοσμούν επαρχιακές εκκλησίες μέχρι και τον 12ο αιώνα. Η επόμενη φάση τοιχογραφιών χρονολογείται στον 10ο αιώνα και αποκαλύφθηκε κάτω από τη νεότερη φάση του 15ου αιώνα.
Οι τοιχογραφίες

Στον 12ο αιώνα χρονολογείται η τοιχογραφία της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου, που βρίσκεται στο τύμπανο του βορείου τυφλού τόξου, καθώς και τα υπολείμματα της Πλατυτέρας ανάμεσα σε αρχαγγέλους, που σώζεται στο τεταρτοσφαίριο της αψίδας. Οι σωζόμενες τοιχογραφίες του 12ου αιώνα βρέθηκαν και αυτές κάτω από το νεότερο στρώμα του 15ου αιώνα. Η τελευταία φάση εικονογράφησης του ναού τοποθετείται χρονικά στον 15ο αιώνα. Οι εν λόγω τοιχογραφίες βρίσκονται στον κεντρικό τρούλο του μεσαίου κλίτους. Στην εκκλησία της Αγίας Παρασκευής, εκτός από τις τοιχογραφίες, σώζεται και μία αξιόλογη αμφιπρόσωπη εικόνα του 15ου αιώνα. Στη μία της πλευρά εικονίζεται η Θεοτόκος στον τύπο της Οδηγήτριας, όπου ο ανώνυμος ζωγράφος ακολουθεί Παλαιολόγεια πρότυπα, ενώ στην άλλη απεικονίζεται η Σταύρωση με πρότυπα επηρεασμένα από τη Δυτική ζωγραφική.

the pics are from a very big church that is being built now in nicosia, close to k-cineplex movie theaters.
its called "agia sofia"(like the one in constantinopole), it immediately draws attention bc of the unusual color of her domes(unusual for big greek orthodox churches).
