Aqua will combine 263 condominium homes in the top 27 stories with 476 rental residences, 210 hotel rooms, approximately 55,000 square feet of retail and office space and a Shore Club amenity that includes an 80,000-square-foot outdoor deck and 35,000-square-foot indoor facility.

The success of this building has been astronomical. 70% sold within 2 months time. It was designed by Studio Gang architects and is located in the $2 billion Lake Shore East development.

I have high hopes for this one. Im just so nervous because Lowenburg is attached to it. But if it comes out right, this will be one of the best projects in Chicago in a long while and I might be able to look at Lakeshore East without cringing so much. This should be where the Chandler and the Regatta are located.

http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/3826/aquabase2ek2.jpg

The forest being shown is a roof deck for the residents and hotel guests. Below 'the forest' is a 5 levels undergound parking, townhomes, retail, restaurants, condo/hotel/rental lobbies, ballrooms, and resident amenities.

In reality the Aqua podium is your typical mega bustle similar to those in river north, only much prettier.
This is due to parking being stuffed below UL Columbus, contemporary townhomes facing the park 50 feet below, and a contemporary colorful street frontage. On UL Columbus the podium will look have a Crate and Barrel/Room and Board contemporary look which will really liven up the area.

Anyone have a render of it amongst it's neighboring buildings?

340 OTP, the building half-way built in front of Aqua, is T/O and almost double the height shown in this shot:

This is a very cool illustration, however, misses some buildings that are also expected to be completed by or around 2010.

For list of buildings in Chicago that are currently under development and approved ones to begin construction, here is a useful link to look at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Chicago

According to that link, there are about 15 new buildings to be completed will be new additions to beautiful skyline of Chicago.

That list is wrong. There are 60 highrises currently under construction with 12 more in site prep/demo stage. Two (three if you include CSpire, which will be u/c any day now) are over 1,000 ft. Five are over 700 ft. Three are over 600 ft. And three are over 500 ft.

Thanks for further information. I always felt that number was a lot more than 15 also, just strolling around downtown Chicago and looking around the number of visible cranes give instant impression that it cannot be 10-15 new buildings only. Having said that I would not guess that to be around 60. Wow! Is there a comprehensive and up to date source to glance this occasionally? Thanks again.

this building looks like somebody melted it next to a campfire.....very good, but still......

actually, if the renderings are to be believed, the ripples look as if they're the result of the winds coming off lake Michigan rippling on the building's walls. It's one of the most impressive designs I've seen and a perfect example of how up until recently such ideas would have been next to impossible to actualize without the help of computers.

On top of that construction is coming along at quite a pace, when I first saw the Aqua proposals I was worried that it might be one of those projects that sounds impressive, but never gets much further than models. I was gladly proven wrong.

The balcony patterns are not random - they relate to carefully plotted sightlines (in other words, that seemingly random pattern on the exterior is actually functional):

But honestly - I like that special design that will bring another new aspect to the superb Chicago skyline. Sadly, in spite of having 251m some day, it will still stand a bit in the shadow of taller towers around then (aon, 2 pru, trump and of course chicago spire).

Seems like they're pouring the unique sections - every floor has a different cast? If so, they probably alternate the patterns on sides every few floors to save money and time.

The construction speed of Aqua is amazing. The sublevels and entrance levels only needed a few months, and now the tower is growing at least by one floor per week. :)

And for the red crane it's about time to hibernate, I suppose :sleepy:...

Should add to the skyline. Rivals the heights of Toronto's tallest proposed and existing buildings. Chicago's in a league of its own. The picture above looks like Miami though ;)

^ I too have been surprised by how tiny the floor plans are. Kind of a shame that so much land has been taken up by one narrow building, but at least the building will look great.

I think its great that the tower footprint is about 1/3 the size of site, as it won't allow other towers yet unbuilt, to completely hem in, or be built "shoulder to shoulder" with it. Kind of like preserving it's own views....

It has only started to really rise and it's already looking spectacular due to the shape of the floor plates. Impressive! :okay:

I think it's a shame they didn't push their own concept further, and gave the actual tower a 'floating/ondulating' shape, instead of sticking curves onto a box.

Still can't wait for the final result though, but I think they missed a golden opportunity to come up with something truly stunning there...
