Aqua will combine 263 condominium homes in the top 27 stories with 476 rental residences, 210 hotel rooms, approximately 55,000 square feet of retail and office space and a Shore Club amenity that includes an 80,000-square-foot outdoor deck and 35,000-square-foot indoor facility.
The success of this building has been astronomical. 70% sold within 2 months time. It was designed by Studio Gang architects and is located in the $2 billion Lake Shore East development.
CULWULLA March 10th, 2007, 04:04 AM nice, very similar to WAVE in Australia which came 2nd in worlds best 2006 Emporis awards.

I have high hopes for this one. Im just so nervous because Lowenburg is attached to it. But if it comes out right, this will be one of the best projects in Chicago in a long while and I might be able to look at Lakeshore East without cringing so much. This should be where the Chandler and the Regatta are located.

CrazyCanuck March 11th, 2007, 06:11 AM I have a feeling that if the design isn't built right it is going to look terrible.

megatower March 11th, 2007, 06:33 AM ^^ no, i read it in the news paper the architect said that she doesn't want to change the design at all. she's very pleased with her design.

353 Clark isn't yet under construction. They are currently doing work on tunnels that are under the site. There's an old freight tunnel that needs to be grouted as well as an old brick lined water tunnel under the site.
Carver02 March 23rd, 2007, 06:33 AM A nice looking design.

Don't worry about it. There was a point where it was believed that 353 N Clark was officially under construction. What we thought was foundation work turned out to be something else.

Joe 2007 April 28th, 2007, 09:43 PM I really love the design of this one!!! Chicago is building some amazing skyscrapers at the moment and in the future, and I can't wait to visit one day!
CrazyAboutCities April 30th, 2007, 02:16 AM I love that building. It is so RANDOM! It look like that skyscraper just got burned from toaster even it is really not. Its so RAD! I can't wait to see how it will turn out! :)
I don't really know Chicago that well since I only been there once... I am curious where it will get built and will it impact Chicago skyline?
Bluewarning April 30th, 2007, 02:21 AM Nobody is talking about this one. I think its one of the best skyscrapers to be built. It may not be 2,000 tall..but it looks pretty slick.
Taylorhoge April 30th, 2007, 04:12 PM love the design cant wait for another tower to stick above the skyline
SkyLerm April 30th, 2007, 04:32 PM Impressive facade
Ralphkke April 30th, 2007, 06:07 PM Don't like this one, maybe it looks great in real life?:)
depressio May 1st, 2007, 03:18 AM Saw this thing this past weekend. Not much in terms of progress yet, but there is a LOT of activity; even on Saturday! I saw at least half a dozen cranes and a big line of trucks, so it's clear that they're serious about this thing.
pwalker May 1st, 2007, 03:33 AM Wasn't Marina City considered "out there" in the 1960's?
This is just another chapter in the innovative skyscraper design of Chicago.
I like it!

The forest being shown is a roof deck for the residents and hotel guests. Below 'the forest' is a 5 levels undergound parking, townhomes, retail, restaurants, condo/hotel/rental lobbies, ballrooms, and resident amenities.
In reality the Aqua podium is your typical mega bustle similar to those in river north, only much prettier.
This is due to parking being stuffed below UL Columbus, contemporary townhomes facing the park 50 feet below, and a contemporary colorful street frontage. On UL Columbus the podium will look have a Crate and Barrel/Room and Board contemporary look which will really liven up the area.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Chicago
According to that link, there are about 15 new buildings to be completed will be new additions to beautiful skyline of Chicago.
That list is wrong. There are 60 highrises currently under construction with 12 more in site prep/demo stage. Two (three if you include CSpire, which will be u/c any day now) are over 1,000 ft. Five are over 700 ft. Three are over 600 ft. And three are over 500 ft.

Thanks for further information. I always felt that number was a lot more than 15 also, just strolling around downtown Chicago and looking around the number of visible cranes give instant impression that it cannot be 10-15 new buildings only. Having said that I would not guess that to be around 60. Wow! Is there a comprehensive and up to date source to glance this occasionally? Thanks again.

PresidentBjork July 31st, 2007, 07:16 PM this building looks like somebody melted it next to a campfire.....very good, but still......
actually, if the renderings are to be believed, the ripples look as if they're the result of the winds coming off lake Michigan rippling on the building's walls. It's one of the most impressive designs I've seen and a perfect example of how up until recently such ideas would have been next to impossible to actualize without the help of computers.
On top of that construction is coming along at quite a pace, when I first saw the Aqua proposals I was worried that it might be one of those projects that sounds impressive, but never gets much further than models. I was gladly proven wrong.

But honestly - I like that special design that will bring another new aspect to the superb Chicago skyline. Sadly, in spite of having 251m some day, it will still stand a bit in the shadow of taller towers around then (aon, 2 pru, trump and of course chicago spire).

Seems like they're pouring the unique sections - every floor has a different cast? If so, they probably alternate the patterns on sides every few floors to save money and time.

Danke schön:)
Diggs January 25th, 2008, 02:24 AM wow, the floor plans seem much smaller than the renders. doesnt seem like a lot of square footage.
Chitowner245 January 25th, 2008, 07:20 AM ^ I too have been surprised by how tiny the floor plans are. Kind of a shame that so much land has been taken up by one narrow building, but at least the building will look great.

I think its great that the tower footprint is about 1/3 the size of site, as it won't allow other towers yet unbuilt, to completely hem in, or be built "shoulder to shoulder" with it. Kind of like preserving it's own views....
LeMoN-SK January 25th, 2008, 11:37 AM It has only started to really rise and it's already looking spectacular due to the shape of the floor plates. Impressive! :okay:
Sy January 30th, 2008, 12:00 AM Good to see an early start on the cladding too! Such a great building.
wrabbit February 4th, 2008, 07:52 PM 2/3/08 - cold, wet, gray Chicago day - crummy weather for photos. Looking NE on Columbus:

PresidentBjork February 4th, 2008, 09:40 PM Holy Shit! I had completely forgotten about this building amidst the hype of the Trump, Spire and Waterview, :bash:
This one is going to be spectacular!
xXFallenXx February 4th, 2008, 09:41 PM LOVING the glass!!!
when the whole tower is clad like that it will look spectacular.
Eric Offereins February 4th, 2008, 11:11 PM Because of the waves in the concrete, it looks like the glas is bent too. Nice optical illusion. :)
ZZ-II February 4th, 2008, 11:11 PM thx for the pics, the glass looks wonderful :)
MDguy February 5th, 2008, 12:18 AM oh wow! Its already taking shape and the glass is great!
chjbolton February 5th, 2008, 12:44 PM I think it's a shame they didn't push their own concept further, and gave the actual tower a 'floating/ondulating' shape, instead of sticking curves onto a box.
Still can't wait for the final result though, but I think they missed a golden opportunity to come up with something truly stunning there...
Taylorhoge February 5th, 2008, 10:32 PM very cool design I love the floor shape
