These are all photos from my recent trip to Halifax. I still didn't get as comprehensive tour as I would've liked, but that just leaves some for the next time. :)

The weekend's weather could only be described as bizarre. After narrowly missing a wild snow/wind storm on Friday's drive down, Saturday was gorgeous and mild. That made me think I'd have a nice warm day Sunday to take a walk downtown. Alas, the winter lightning of Saturday night was followed by a sunny but cold day Sunday to walk around Dartmouth. Here's the pics from Sunday.

We decided at this point it was too cold and proceeded to walk back to the car. The next few shots are from that walk.

A couple from a stop at one of the lakes. We were trying to get a photo of ourselves in front of a fountain in the lake, but my batteries died.

Batteries charged and ready to go! While my fiancee and my cousin were both looking at wedding dresses, I took a walk around Halifax. The day ranged from sunny and mild, to sunny windy and cold, to windy with flurries. It changed about every 15 minutes. I lucked out that all the photos were from when it was sunny.

A look back to where we were yesterday.

Got fed up with the cold, so I returned to my car to get my new toy I got for Christmas (Canon Rebel SLR film camera) and make my way down to the water again, then up to the citadel. I also took my digital, so here's the shots from that excursion.
First, an almost 360-degree pano from the top of Metro Park.

http://www.pbase.com/smevo/image/75409791.jpg

This is when I get the call from my fiancee, she wants my camera at Spring Garden Rd. Well, I walked up the hill first to shoot some panos, then went to meet her.

Got to where she was on Spring Garden and just missed her. But it did get me in the neighbourhood to take these shots.

After I returned to my car, I called my buddy for lunch, and ended up helping him buy a new car. All in all, it was a great weekend, even with the bizarre weather. That's all for this trip.

Cheers from the future engineers!

Great Pics, S. Halifax can be very photogenic, with the mix of old and new.

Great pictures, thanks!

Unfortunately, developers have learned that if you want approval to build in downtown Halifax, you have to get an architect to design you something like this:

[QUOTE=Smevo;12097718]
http://www.pbase.com/smevo/image/75409794.jpg
[QUOTE]

And that's one of the better ones. Very discouraging. It gives downtown a real sameness and looks phony and cheap.

Thanks all for the comments.

You're very right Keith P. That building is quite bland. You'd think with buildings such as Purdy's Wharf twins and 1801 Hollis that Halifax embraced progressive styles, until you read about the endless appeals by the heritage groups. Hopefully United Gulf clears its last hurdle(s) and gets to break ground soon.

Thanks again for the comments guys. I made it a point to represent some Dartmouth on this, since every time I go to Halifax I spend some time in Dartmouth and I felt it was underrepresented on these boards.

Halifax is really a lot more built up than I ever thought it was...Looks a lot bigger than the 375 000 people or so it makes a home for.

Random question...Does Halifax have a chinese community, or even a somewhat substantial chinese population?

Very large for its size i think. not too many good vantage points from afar i take it? other wise i would see alot more of this city.

Just beautiful...

There is a small Chinese community, but it does not seem to be as large or influential as the Greek/Lebanese community (I don't have actual statistics on hand, this is just based on observation). There is no Chinatown or other Chinese neighbourhoods if that's what you were getting at.

There are only a couple of thousand Chinese people living in Halifax.

That number would be slightly larger when you factor in foreign students. I don't think they are included in census counts.

There are many Asian restaurants and grocers but there is no Chinatown. It's nothing like Toronto. Chinese people are maybe the 4th or 5th largest immigrant group.

those are actually GOOD pics. I was sick of seeing the same pics every time someone shoots Halifax. Now I know there is much more then the ocean front. Thank you .

Great shots. I live in Vancouver now, but grew up in Halifax (herading back in April). It was good to see the city through a different lens. For example, walking down Barrington, I sometimes neglect to really look at some of the buildings.

Nice photos but the city looks a little bit depressive

In the winter, it can get very grey and dreary. Halifax finally seems to be growing at a decent clip again, so hopefully we'll see some of those new developments come to life. I've picked a few sample shots from my Halifax photo thread. (There's a link to it at the bottom if you want to see more.) It's really a very cute charming place most of the year:
