Kenya's men's volleyball team maintained a clean sheet in the All Africa Games zone five qualifiers in Khartoum, Sudan, and in the process grabbed the only ticket reserved for the zone.

Head of delegation Ismael Chege yesterday said Kenya clinched the only slot to join their female counterparts after a one-week round robin tournament.

Kenya faced a baptism of fire in their last match against hosts Sudan, with each side having won all their three matches. However, the Kenyans displayed a better game as they restricted their opponents, starting from a set down, and won in 3-1 of 23-25, 25-11, 25-18 and 26-24.

This sent set off celebrations within the Kenyan camp as they are assured of a return to continental volleyball after seven years in the cold.

Steering committee

The last time the men's team qualified for the All Africa games was in 1999 when they travelled to Johannesburg, South Africa but ended up fifth.

This forced the steering committee of the Abuja Games to overlook them. "We have redeemed our image now and gained tremendous confidence among the players. We can now talk, but this is just the beginning. The main assignment is yet to be tackled and it will be in Algeria in July," said Chege.

Really LePhillippe because that would support my argument that Abuja 2014 is going to get the support of Asian commonwealth nations and with votes coming from Australia, the Carribean and probably Oceanea it will put the bid well over the required 36 to win right now I am counting about 48 with relations business wise or common links in the commonwealth to Nigeria. Religion, Opec, bilateral trade and persons of color are common between the majority of countries in the commonwealth and Nigeria.

On technical merit alone Abuja should be able to win .

Cheers Jim Jones Wins !!!!!!!!

The National Sport Commission has chosen six foreign countries, Cuba, Germany, Romania, Russia, Spain and Korea, as venues for the nation's athletes preparing for the forthcoming 9th All Africa Games in Algeria.

The commission said one of the countries , Cuba, which is noted for her prowess in amateur boxing, has graciously accepted the bilateral talks with the National Sports Commission to assist in the preparation of the country's squad for the continental games as well as Special Sports, Judo and Wrestling.

THISDAY gathered that the athletes have been scheduled to leave as from June 13 even as efforts are being made for the release of fund.

Germany has been chosen as training ground for 14 sports including athletics, basketball, badminton, cycling, chess and female football team. Others teams going to Germany are handball, karate, kick-boxing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwando, and tennis.

It was learnt that the athletes, mainly home-based since the end of their local camping could not embark on overseas training tour for the Algiers All Africa Games owing to lack of funds.

However THISDAY learnt that the problem is almost being resolved to enable them embark on the trip.

Successful athletes after their training tour would fly straight to Algiers for the games while those that went for mere exposure would return to home to continue in their quest to make the national team

Falcons rue Algeria defeat
Posted on 07 June 2007 - 18:06

Players of Nigeria's women national team, the Super Falcons have tendered an apology to Nigerians over last Sunday's loss to Algeria in the Olympic Games qualifiers.

Nigeria's Falcons, favourites to qualify for the Olympics shockingly lost to the Algerians by a lone goal, their second loss in Africa since the inception of the game and some of the players told KICKOFF that they are truly sorry for the loss.

"For me, I could not just understand how we could have lost that match," Vera Okolo told KICKOFF on arrival.

"When the player took that shot we all looked at it as a harmless one but it just went in from outside the eighteen. We played well, very well but football can be like that at times. It was a very painful loss but we will make Nigeria smile again. We will make it up to Nigerians in the rest of the qualifiers. You all can take my words," Okolo said.

Midfielder, Evelyn Nwabuoko told KICKOFF that the Falcons actually played their best in that match but were just unlucky.

"For me I have never felt that bad in my life before. It was like losing your pride. We just kept missing goals apart from the antics of the referee. We are simply sorry for that loss."

Finland based Rita Chikwelu felt the Falcons disgraced themselves rather but would make Nigerians proud with future results.

"We are not too happy. Though we lost because we could not take our chances, we know the referee was harsh on us and the hosts too tried to frustrate us in many ways. Like we stayed four in a room at the hotel and we practically had to fight to eat, but all the same we know we will wipe the tears off the faces of Nigerians with our result in the second leg."

Chief coach of the side, Jossy Lad described it as a sad weekend for women football in Nigeria but was optimistic that the team would do its best especially in the second leg.

"Our strikers missed a lot of chances and I have always been telling them that they cannot continue to throw away chances. In the three friendly matches we played before

"I do not want to give excuses for the loss but I want us to concentrate on the second leg because winning that match will be the only consolation to Nigerians."

"Just tell Nigerians not to write us off. We will put the smile back on their faces," Lad said.

The return leg was earlier scheduled to be played in Oghara but on return from Algeria, the Nigeria Football Association has been toying with the idea of playing the match at the Abuja National Stadium.

Terrorism worries pushed aside as All-Africa Games get off the mark

DEPRIVED of international competition for 15 years because of Islamic terrorism, Algeria is ready this week to host the ninth edition of the All-Africa Games.

The north African state will be only the second country, after Nigeria in 1973 and 2003, to host the event on two occasions. It was the venue for the games in 1978.

The event, which will take place in the country’s sea-port capital, Algiers, starts tomorrow and will end on July 23.

It will be attended by 8,000 athletes and officials from 52 African nations.

Competition will be in 27 disciplines (there were 28 until water polo was dropped because there were too few competitors).

The head of the African Games organising committee in Algeria, Djaafar Yefsah, said he believed that the games would show Algeria in its best light and stand its athletes in good stead for next year’s Olympics in Beijing.

Yefsah said: “Accepting the challenge to organise these games when there were no other takers has showed that Algeria has guts.

“The games will show Africans the real face of Algeria.”

Algeria are in fourth place on the medals table after eight editions of the games, which are held every four years.

Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa are the three leading countries in the event.

Nigeria topped the medals count at the games four years ago when its team competed on home soil, in Abuja.

oran stadium (construction project given to china)

Of the Chinese for the Olympic stage Oran Convertir into pdf printable Version Suggérer by Écrit mall by Sofiane Mr. (Daily of Oran) 10-07-2007 BallonLe Olympic stage of Oran will be carried out by Chinese. The Chinese company "MCC International Corporation LTD", indeed, has been just selected by the Management of the housing and the public equipment (DLEP) of the wilaya of Oran for the realization of this Olympic stage of 40.000 places. The company, which was seen temporarily awarding the contract after analysis and evaluation of the technical and financial offers, proposed the realization of this Olympic stage for nearly 10,5 billion dinars. The financial offer suggested by this Chinese company is with the lowest offer among the offers of the two other tenderers who had quoted financial between 12 and 17 billion dinars. The Chinese, who obtained a technical note of 80 out of 100, also succeeded in convincing the commission of selection, since they had proposed to carry out this great project within a completion period of only 29 months. The Chinese company "MCC International Corporation LTD" was in race with two other foreign companies: the national company of the building work of China (CSCEC) which had proposed approximately 12 billion DA and the Portuguese grouping Texeria Duarte Groupo which had proposed 17 billion DA. The national company of the building work of China (CSCEC) had tendered to carry out the stage in 35 months, whereas the Portuguese grouping "Texeria Duarte Groupo" had proposed a completion date 30 months. On the 30 schedules of conditions withdrawn from the DLEP, five companies foreign tendered for this project, but in the final analysis only three were retained after the rejection of the offers of the two other companies: the Egyptian company "Arab Contractors Ahmed Osmane and Co" and the grouping espano-Portuguese "Liena Construcciones". These two foreign companies did not succeed in obtaining a good technical note to secure their prequalification. The new Olympic complex will be carried out on a surface of 105 hectares with Oran-Is. The selected site is with the accesses of the RN11, between the localities of Sidi El-Bachir, Bir El-Djir and that of Douar Belgaïd. This site will also shelter the new university pole and an academy of police force. The authorities devoted the budget of 6,25 billion dinars for the realization of the Olympic complex, but a extension of at least four billion DA is from now on necessary to concretize this project. It is to be recalled that the launching of the initial work of this project was initially planned for the end of the second half of 2006.

This Stadium is sweet.

On the fifth day of competition in the 9th All Africa Games, host country Algeria remains at the top of the overall standings with 100 gold and silver medals, with South Africa in second with 70. Forty-two of Algeria's total are gold medals, while South Africa has earned top honours in 29 events. Tunisia occupies a distant third place, with 23 silver medals.

Algeria suffered a setback Monday (July 16th), when its Group B men's football team failed to qualify for the semi-finals after a 1-1 draw against Zambia. The draw, coupled with an earlier loss against Guinea, made it impossible to obtain the three points Algeria needed to stay in the tournament.

Algerian coach Mahmoud Guendouz spoke out against the behaviour of some national team managers who "upset the team's concentration by either talking to the press or visiting the team accommodations," as well as the attitude of JSK leadership who threatened to pull their team out of the African Games if the Federation would not release its players in order to face Tunisia's ES Sahel in the Africa Champions League on July 21st.

In Monday's other Group B match, Guinea beat Egypt 3-2. In Group A, Cameroon and Tunisia qualified for the semi-finals, where they will face Zambia and Guinea, respectively.

In the women's competition, a 2-0 victory over Senegal on Sunday gave Algeria a berth in the semi-finals, pitting the host team against Nigeria on Wednesday. The other match will pit South Africa against Ghana.

In tennis, Algeria walked away from four finals with four medals: men's and women's singles and doubles. The medal winners were Samia Mejhadi, Lamine Ouahab and the women's pairing of Hellou and Mejahdi. The men's doubles team comprised Ouahad and Slimane Saoudi, who faced the Egyptian doubles team.

In the kickboxing events, Algerian athletes added three more gold medals to those won the day before in the last six finals fought Monday morning in Boumerdes. The victors were Benamani Abderhmane (71 kg), Berrim Faycal (86 kg) and Amrani Yacine (91 kg). Altogether, the Algerians carried off 12 medals (7 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze), upstaging Tunisia (2 golds, 3 silvers, 1 bronze) and Nigeria (1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze).

Tunisia took a gold medal in fencing after four days of competition. Tunisians dominated the event and the women's team sabre events, taking the two gold medals at stake. Senegal and South Africa claimed the silver medals, and Egypt took bronze.

Eight of Algeria's eleven boxers have made it through to the semi-final round. On Monday Rachid Tariket (64 kg) and Abdelkader Chadi (57 kg) were the last two to qualify. The next round will take place Tuesday and Wednesday.

South Africa emerged victorious in swimming competition Monday, after a one-day break. The overall swimming leaders reaped 5 gold medals to add to the twelve they won over the previous three days. Algeria and Zimbabwe each took one of the two remaining medals. Sofiane Daoud claimed Algeria's medal in the 4x100 swimming relay. Two days remain in the competition
