Wuhan (simplified Chinese: 武汉) is the capital of Hubei province, and is the most populous city in central People's Republic of China. It lies at the east of Jianghan Plain, and the intersection of the middle reaches of the Yangtze and Han River. Arising out of the conglomeration of three boroughs, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, Wuhan is known as the "thoroughfare of nine provinces"; it is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and expressways passing through the city. The city of Wuhan, first termed as such in 1927, has a population of approximately 9,100,000 people (2006), with about 6,100,000 residents in its urban area. In the 1920s, Wuhan was the capital of a leftist Kuomintang (KMT) government led by Wang Jingwei in opposition to Chiang Kai-shek, now Wuhan is recognized as the political, economic, financial, cultural, educational and transportation center of central China.

All pics following were shot in the Area of Wuchang's "Optical valley of China". Home to a bunch of high tech companies, a grand scale exhibition center as well as first class hotels and surrounded by several universities working hand in hand with the local industry it will certainly play a key role in Wuhan's further development. Here we go...

Yes, there r many projects and there is much more to come. The optical valley area will also be connected to the wuhan metro (which is under construction these days) providing a fast connection to Hankou.

Here is the rest of my pics, most of them showing the Exhibition Center and its surrounding...

I like Wuhan for what it is (except the climate..of course), not that it resembles chicago or not.
Your title is extremely misleading, like I said I hate it when people draw this kind of comparison, but I can accept it when there is some truth to it, but your pictures have not convinced me that.

Wuhan was historically called the "Chicago of China" because it was the largest industrial city in the hinterland of China in the early 20th century. This was because there were colonial sections controlled by foreign powers, and it was a major port and railroad terminus.

Obviously the two cities have developed in different ways, but the main reason why they were compared was because both were the largest industrial centers and railroad terminus in the hinterlands of both China and the US. While Shanghai and New York can be compared together, as they are both the premiere financial cities of both countries.

I think nowadays, Chongqing can be more accurately compared to Chicago. It's rapidly becoming the largest metropolis in inland China.

Chongqing,oh,no,,,
Chongqing is not like a city,
Frankly Speaking,
Chongqing is an "abnormal province" with a large area & a population of 30,000,000.Chongqing is an industrial city with a lot of agricultural people.

It's not about being similar though.

I have absolutely no problem with someone state that a Chinese city, or just a part of it, reminds them of another city. But to for example say Wuhan is the Chicago of China, is simply insulting as if Wuhan's sole existence is to copy Chicago...

R U sure? I dare say Wuhan is one of the few cities in mainland China that has a magnificant skyline.U know that the skyline of Wuhan is quite long, and most of skyscrapers in Wuhan are not by the riverside.
Look at the graph below,it shows the ranking of cities' skyline all over the world.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/9466/02670c19yf3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Wuhan ranks 24th globally, even ahead of Taipei & Dubai etc.
Wuhan ranks 6th in the mainland China, only after Shanghai,Guangzhou,Chongqing,Shenzhen&Peking.

Here is the photo of Wuhan's skyline(northern bank of the Yangtze River)
a few years ago, compared with the skyline of HK Island.

I thought it was established long ago that stats and data from emporis should not be trusted. Anyway, great pix of Wuhan and as said, please don't compare it to Nagoya or Chicago.

Nagoya is probably built from a blueprint that resembled some Chinese city years ago. And Chicago is more like a baby comparing to Wuhan (no offence), the famouse Yellow Crane Tower of Wuhan was built some 1800 years ago. Did Nagoya or Chicago even exist?

Actually the current Yellow Crane Tower was built after the 1950's. The original Yellow Crane Tower was unfortunately destroyed during the Chinese civil war...

Interesting pictures! I'm particularly interested in the third picture with the railway station captioned When was it constructed? Does it still exist (which I strongly doubt)? Does anybody have more information on this railway station?

Interesting pictures! I'm particularly interested in the third picture with the railway station captioned When was it constructed? Does it still exist (which I strongly doubt)? Does anybody have more information on this railway station?

Fortunately, the railway station is still exist. The station was built in 1900.Thebuilding of the station has a rectangular plane. The facade faces the street. It consists of five sections, which are symmetrically built from the central hall. Two waiting rooms on both sides are open to the hall.At both ends of the station there is a two-story building of the same size.Booking offices and waiting rooms are on the groundfloor of the buildings.Offices occupy the 2nd floor. The front and back facades have the same structure. In the central hall there was a huge semicircular window on its two sides. Each of the four corners on the top of the hall has a spire, which is of the typical French four-bastille style. The central hall and building on both sides have arching roofs covered with green ironsheets, corresponding to the green eaves. The whole bulding has a simple and refined appearance. It was also one of the railway stations with good facilities in early China.

The construction project of the new railway station in Hankow was started in 1989,and was completed and open to the public in 1991.From then on,the building was no longer used as a railway station. As it is an important historical building of the national levels,it is carefully preserved till now.

The recent photo of the old station

Now,Wuhan is one of the few cities(just Beijing,Canton,Shanghai&Wuhan) in China that have 3 national level railway stations.

Wuhan Station(For the Peking-Canton express-railway) is now under construction. It will be completed by the end of 2008.

Hankow Station, the transformation of the station will also be completed by the end of 2008. The style of the architecture will follow the old station.

Wuchang Station, the Environmental Amelioration Project of the station is mostly completed,it will be open to the public later this year.

The *** railway stations currently being built in China are extremely impressive. I think it's good that so much priority has been given to the development of the railway instead of just domestic flights.
I'm actually surprised that only Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Wuhan have national level railway stations. What about places like Chongqing (since it's such a big ****) and Kunming (because it has international rail connections)?

I'm afraid U misunderstood what I said.I mean that only Beijing,Shanghai,Wuhan&Guangzhou have more than 2 national leval railway stations.Wuhan has 3 big railway stations, one for Hankow, one for Wuchang and one for the Peking-Canton Express Railway.

Some of China's metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xi'an are all within a circle around the center of Wuhan with the radius of 1000km. Wuhan is the important strategic supporting point of Central China.
Wuhan is one of traffic hubs in China. Its capacity of communications at home and to foreign countries is among the top list of China’s metropolises. Its arterial highways extend in all directions. Its ******** has formed the external cycle, middle cycle and internal cycle of fast lanes. Four arterial railways such as Jing-Guang, Jing-Jiu, Wu-Da and Han-Dan intersect in Wuhan, from which you may reach 25 provincial capitals in China by railway.

I will not compare it to Chicago. But if you want to compare East vs West then imo, Chicago is comparable to Shanghai and Hong Kong is to New York. The most similar city comparable to Wuhan is maybe "Houston" but thats just my opinion.

Wuhan is a metropolis with various cityscapes. So it doesn't resemble Chicago,Nanoya,Houston,Atlanta, etc.Wuhan is just Wuhan!!!"The Otiental Chicago" is just refer to that Wuhan plays the role in China is similar to that Chicago plays in the US.Wuhan is the largest city in inland China, while Chicago is the largest in inland America.

As I posted again, its just my opinion. I traveled to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Chicago, Houston, New York and many other famous cities in the world but not Wuhan (I don't even know that city until now). The pictures of Wuhan is nice and interesting but if you see the chart of the skyline structures, the number of buildings of Houston are merely the same with Shanghai but way off from Wuhan. Of course, it maybe become Chicago once all the constructions are completed.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/7150/4c0851f0020011mkrt5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8559/4c0851f0020011mlqa3.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/5493/2006112223491185729jg2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/6263/4c0851f0020011oncb1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/7401/4c0851f0020011omoe0.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/9523/4c0851f0020011mnpa5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9481/4c0851f0020011moih6.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/5471/4c0851f0020011nqfj5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9784/4c0851f0020011npxf2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/7102/4c0851f0020011nrra6.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/5568/4c0851f0020011nuwp8.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/4460/4c0851f0020011olwq9.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/1811/4c0851f0020011ojwb1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/3674/4c0851f0020011okhj5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1161/02484201jc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/8678/4c0851f0020011oppm1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

:) u misunderstood it! The tower was named "Gonghang Plaza" because the biggest investor of the project is Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. "最地铁写字楼" is the realtor's slogan of marketing advertisement.

it doesnt resemble Chicago at all.
I hate people drawing groundless linkage between Chinese cities and western cities. The only one I can kinda accept is between Chongqing and New York, their skylines do look sometimes similar, not to mention the geography also ahve similarities.

if u hate china so much cant u jus fkin leave??!

^^ Sen said Chongqing is more like New York than Chicago. And there's no point to use western cities as measurement of Chinese cities. I don't see how he hates China. I see more the opposite.
You probably misunderstood his post.

Interesting finding, Oliver. :) I tried to translate it into English. It might not be 100% accurate, but the important stuff should get clear:

Wuhan is China's largest city! After this news was first published by the U.S. magazine "National Geographic", the world-famous news agency Agence France-Presse sent out a delegation to undertake a two-month investigation on Wuhan.

AFP`s article from May 22nd states: American "National Geographic" ranks Wuhan among the ten biggest cities of the world referring to the results of analyzing most recent satellite mapping. AFP mentions that in the past, only Shanghai and Hankow had been chosen into the world's top 10 biggest cities ranking, furthermore that this was well before founding of the new China. Are the (National Geographic`s) results the outcome of bad research? Experts from city planning and statistics departments comment: "It seems not clear if these claims refer only to the main urban area or also include the wider metropolitan area". Regarding the question whether Wuhan could actually be mainland China's largest city, the two departments' officials said: "There is no unified data, so this is hard to say." Regardless of Wuhan being China's largest city or not, the perceptions of its' residents might reveal more: Citizen Dan Xiaobing , who often comes along Han Xi's Duoluokou Area (Hankou), said: "Five years ago, Duoluokou was right at the city's boundary. But these days the border is several miles away west from Duoluokou." The size of Wuhan also impresses international friends. According to AFP`s report, former French general consul in Wuhan, Mr. XXX described: Wuhan has twice the size of the whole Paris. Wuhan has also attracted the attention of the international community, during this year's May, many festivals were held in Wuhan, many trade and investment missions came there..." Considering this, AFP believes: This is all because Wuhan got into National Geographic`s Top Ten of the world's biggest cities.
"(In Wuhan,) energy costs is 1/3 of Shanghai's, transport costs is 1/4 of Shanghai's, Industrial cost is 1/ 8 of Beijing's" - this is a part of the research data that Agence France-Presse submitted to the European Asian Development Commission after the results of their investigation.

"On To Chicago
Monday, Jun. 13, 1938 Article ToolsPrintEmailReprintsSphereAddThisRSS

Already in Japanese hands are China's Boston (Peking), New York (Shanghai) and Washington (Nanking). Last week the Japanese pressed forward in a renewed drive to add China's Chicago (Hankow) to the collection. Capture of Hankow, temporary operating headquarters of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's Government since the fall of Nanking five months ago, would not complete the process of dismembering China but would leave the Chinese only a fraction of what was once their nation. In the Yangtze Valley, main trade stem of central China, industrial Hankow is second only to Shanghai. Into Hankow daily roll trainloads of supplies, munitions from China's New Orleans (Canton), planeloads and motorcades of vital arms and materials from Russia through Sovietized Outer Mongolia (China's Pacific Northwest).

None of your pictures look like Chicago, period.
Wuhan can be Wuhan, it doesnt need to be Chicago in China.

I think maybe you misunderstand the title of this thread. The first one who say that is Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan). In his plan, he wanted Wuhan to be the traffic and business hub of China, connecting both east and west, north and south. After him, people like to call Wuhan "the oriental Chicago", functionally, not physically.

What are these buildings? Are they ancient renovated buildings or newly constructed for tourism? They are so beautiful!

The first one looks like CQ, I have taken it down.

The ancient buildings are located in Wuhan East Lake area. The second is surely a new building of resort hotel or something.

This is the best shot of any Chinese city that I have ever seen. the density, the beautiful variations in height, and the lights all make it a spectacular photo.
