I am completely with you on this one, very nice stadium, but the colour I do not understand. Maybe a little bit more red and white in it and then I would understand

I hope so. Don't think they would stay there too long.
Plus some clubs have quite impressive attendances even in lower divisons. Atlético had an average of more than 40'000 in their first season in Segunda Division, about as much as they have now. There are much more examples in Germany, Italy and England. And I guess the Athletic fans are very loyal.

At that price, with red seats, and red and white striped shirts on the pitch - I love it.

The Victorian State government is talking about spending nearly that much on a 31000 seater. Shocking.

I think its a bit premature to believe the country is a front runner at this stage, maybe some wishful thinking on your part. This stadium does look neat but it has to be built first. England has more modern stadiums than Spain at the moment and more planned for the future. A new anfield is going to be built that will possibly have a capacity of around 75 000 by 2018. Considering the fact that it will be over 50 years since England hosted it and the quality football infrastructure now present in the country, members of FIFA should conclude it is the obvious choice. Spain should probably be the next European country to host it after England once they have upgraded facilities.

SkyLerm
March 18th, 2007, 02:54 PM
^^The most probably thing is that Real Madrid by 2018 will have a totally new stadium with a capacity between 100.000-120.000, plus the renovation of the Camp Nou which will reach 120.000 too, and there are lots of projects here than easily can make a real good and competitive bid. England nowadays has better stadia than Spain, but by 2018 that will be very similar...The most reasonable thing is that Englad doesn't host a WC since '66, so IMO in that aspect they deserve it much more than us ;)
By the way, it is already official that Brazil will host 2014 WC? As far as I know, it hasn't been elected yet :?

Thanks god this is just the basic project. The main problem for the design is that Athletic has to manage a very small terrain, Bilbao council told them that if they wanted to keep the new stadium in the downtown they'll must resign to have only 42.0000 m2 or they should go to the outside, Athletic answered that with that terrain they could only make an stadium for a little more than 40.000 people, finally they accepted and started to find extrange engineering solutions in order to find a place for 55.000 spectators there.

It seems that the local engineering company IDOM-ACXT found a solution for this problem and presented an affordable project for 56.000 spectators very good in the inside and in the distribution of the stands, seats, boxes, in a secure and balanced way and reaching all the demands for being a 5 stars stadium. So as an engineering work this is a superb work, but as design it's very poor.

I hope that for the final design Athletic will sign a famous architect for giving the "final touch" that I think that it needs.

The budget is going to be more than 183 millions, the last news that I heard are talking about 220 millions.

Athletic will manage about 1/3 of the funding, the rest will be paid with public money by the Bilbao Council and the Biscay Provincial Council

In summer 2.008.

Now they are demolishing de old exhibition centre, the new stadium will be built over that terrains, but it still remains to draw up the final project, and award the works. They will be ready before summer, but as the works will be so close to the old stadium they will wait until the end of the season.

Is the design allready a sure thing, or might there be some changes like it was with the final design of the Valencia stadium?
I like the design, but I still think they should put a little bit more ´kathedral´ in it, as San Mames is such a special stadium now.

Hi everyone

It would be a great stadium for an outstanding team in spain.
I am a MANCHESTER UNITED supporter but among spanish teams i support Athletic Club de Bilbao ,they are special and different.
Especially because of not using many foreigner i think there is no foreigners this season but last season there was a mexiacan player i don´t remember exactly his name i think something like Iturragia and this season he transfered to Salamanca i think.
By the way,i´ve heard that Amorebieta is from venezuela but has parents from Basque.

First one,
I don´t think that it is correct to call Athletic Club de Bilbao as athletico (athletico is good for Athletico madrid).

Second,

Iturriaga was born in Mexico but he moved with his family to the Basque Country at the age of 12, he started playing football in his school and he was called to make a trial with Athletic junior team, and since them he was promoting until the first team.

Amorebieta is another case, he was born by an accident in Venezuela, because his father was working there as a pelota player and his family moved temporarily to Venezuela, when Amorebieta's dad finished his contract they came back being Amorebieta just a baby. He has spent all his life in Iurreta, a town around 30 kms from Bilbao.

I think that that post was talking about Atlético de Madrid, that team was relegated a few years ago and it's true that they had an impressive average attendance when they where playing in liga 2nd, I believe that it was an example about the large number of supporters that many teams have in England, Spain, Germany or Italy.

And it's true that we are very loyal, we needed and stadium about 65.000 seats, but we prefered to build an smaller one in order to keep it in the downtown, Bilbao's council only could offer us a terrain about 42.700 m2 in the downtown instead of the 55.000 m2 that the club wanted, it was that or Athletic shall move to the outside.

Each stadium of that type want to upgrade it before it is finished to be built!!!

50k is not so far from 60k but then why don't push the capacity directly to 60k ?? I hate this capacity because i think 60k is the better cap!!

The lille one's is an example of this waste. 700 millions total cost for only 50k !! :ohno: . Desesperating...

After using google translator on the Spanish article below, I've got a rough idea how the project will go in the future.

1. The capacity was a little bit increased to 57K-58K with the majority of increases focused on VIP boxes without expanding the surface on which to build the stadium.

2. The engineering firm is working on the final draft now and most importantly, construction is expected to begin this year!

3. The estimated cost is around 220M Euros.

Spanish speakers here, what about my crappy translations?:banana::banana:

=================================================================

You´re right! But it should be good enough for La Segunda...
I Think also that it is a shame that this is the final design, if you look at their current stadium, it´s original and you recodnize it directly.
When you´ll see this stadium, you would think Bayern is playing Alaves for some kind of reason...

Examining these two pictures, it looks as though one end of the new stadium overlaps with one side of the old stadium.

What is the plan? Will Athletic Bilbao move to a temporary stadium during construction? Or will the capacity of the old stadium be reduced during construction? Or will the new stadium be left unfinished at that one end - to be completed once the old stadium has been demolished?

From the outside a clear Allianz Arena clone
But from the inside the atmosphere is probably going to be quite different with this "greenhouse effect" that the transparent roof and the green seats (if that's how they will come) create. I like it, despite all the simmilarities and the fact that I'm not a great fan of the Allianzarena. But this stadium, if that is how it's gonna look in the end, meets my personal taste just a little more. It just creates more of an outdoor type of atmosphere inside and I like that very much. Let's just hope the stadium is not gonna heat up all that much in the summer sun.

By the way:
3rd tier is like Allianz "oval/wavy"
The wavy back of the tier is pretty much what naturally get, when you take an almost "rectangular" tier and "three dimensionally" cut off the rear with a pretty much oval shaped facade. And this wave effect is not exactly specific to the Allianz Arena, in fact it can also be seen in a number of other stadia. In most stadia that have an oval or round shaped outside and naturally rather "rectangular" type shaped tiers inside.

I wonder why they took the decision to do it like that?

Tottenham plan to do something similar but they will leave their new stadium incomplete at one end until the old stadium is demolished, as shown below:

PHASE 1
New stadium build commences to the North of the existing stadium. The existing stadium remains in use at full capacity.

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/uploads/assets/stadium/scheme/phase1.jpg

PHASE 2
Out of season, the North Stand of the existing stadium is demolished and the new pitch is laid.

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/uploads/assets/stadium/scheme/phase2.jpg

PHASE 3
The partially completed new stadium is in use for one season with a capacity in excess of the current ground. The remainder of the existing stadium is demolished.

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/uploads/assets/stadium/scheme/phase3.jpg

PHASE 4
Out of season the remainder of the new stadium is completed, ready for the start of the following season.

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/uploads/assets/stadium/scheme/phase4.jpg

I confess that I prefer Tottenham's solution. It means that there will never be a loss of capacity.

It's not really a big enough increase in capacity to justify building a new stadium, especially as it is a design that could not be expanded easily in the future.

The new tier configuration isn't good either, those small palco tiers just seem to segregate the normal fans, and defuse a lot of the atmosphere. That would be a big loss considering what a great atmosphere you get in the current San Mamés.

Well looking through the pictures on their website, the infrastructure and fittings of the old ground are looking very aged, and as a whole the stadium looks like it needs a lot of modernising, so it makes sense to pursue an opportunity to increase revenues by building a new, modern stadium, rather than spend a fortune on the San Mames that would only bring it up to date, and not necessarily increase incomes. All IMO, of course.

San Mamés Barria, SL

Increase in capital, tenders and tender invitations.
The San Mames Barria, S.L. Board of directors had a meeting on 10 December 2010 where it was agreed to proceed with the following tenders subject to the conditions and deadlines detailed in the corresponding documents:
- Tender for execution of Earth Moving work.
- Tender for execution of Equipment Development at San Mames (via the San Mames Coordination Board).
The total and maximum budget for both tenders amounts to 17,075,205 euros (IVA/VAT included).

Likewise, the board proceeded with the approval of tender documents in the areas of Security, Occupational Health and Insurance Mediators.

Tender notification will be published in the newspapers and Official Bulletins in accordance with the regulations, with the aim being, once all the required legal steps have been complied with, the commencement in April 2011 of the new phase of works.
Equally, on 10 December, during the San Mames Barria, S.L. General Meeting an increase concerning the company’s capital was approved to the value of seven million euros (€7,000,000) that will be provided by the Basque Government and Biscay’s Provincial Government. Once these contributions have been made, the composition of the company’s capital will be as follows:

Members - Euros

ATHLETIC CLUB €18,802,000
BISCAY’S PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT €5,002,000
BASQUE GOVERNMENT €5,000,000
BBK €2,002,000
BILBAO TOWN HALL €60,103

As it is known, upon completion of the financial plan, Athletic Club, Biscay’s Provincial Government, the Basque Government and Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa will have the same share in the final participation.

The timeline is 06.2011 - 06/07.2014. It's supposed to be ready just before the 2014/2015 season.

It's going to be such a shame to see the old San Mamés torn down. I've had the pleasure of seeing three games there over the years and the atmosphere's unlike any other ground in Spain, with the possible exception of the Mestalla.

Estimated in 2014:

Works update and more information from Euskoscrapers

http://www.athletic-club.net/fotogaleria/galeria26799.jpg

http://www.athletic-club.net/fotogaleria/galeria26800.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rebax/Bilbao/IMAG0159m.jpg

Esto aclara algo?

http://www.bilbaointernational.com/wp-content/uploads/AREA-SAN-MAMES3.jpg

http://www.bilbaointernational.com/basurtu-berria/

Hopefully, this stadium will have an enormous impact on club's finance and competitiveness. Correct me if I'm wrong but the stadium is mainly financed by city council of Bilbao?

Couple good years in Spain, new Espanyol stadium, new San Mames and hopefully new Mestalla soon.

I guess that kind of facade is getting trendy. A department store under construction in México is using a similar facade.

Nice stadium by the way. I hope they can keep a wall o something like that from old San Mames and make and square with statues of the best players. That will be cool.

Renders the past that have come on the website of engineering ACXT.

It is noted that we have chosen a white facade of innovative ETFE, the same as in Allianz Arena and Olympic swimming pool in Beijing.

It was decided to create an optical effect EFTE twisting elongated plates in a growing point or / and decreasing.

Still do not know if it will has a second skin, as the spaces between the plates is quite large. For the render does not seem to take anything, but it is improvising quite so nobody knows how it will be the outcome with certainty, excepting perhaps engineering
