Thanks, but they're a bit small.
Anyone know the angle of the steepest section?
www.sercan.de November 23rd, 2007, 10:39 AM 38° (used sketchup)
Nowadays i think 34° is the max. in new projects
lpioe November 23rd, 2007, 12:56 PM ^^ 34° is the recommended maximum for Britain.
In Italy, up to 41° is allowed, but handrails infront of each row are recommended for such angles.
Are this 38° the steepest angle you know sercan?
Mestalla and Bernabeu look very steep too in the upper rows.
www.sercan.de November 23rd, 2007, 04:02 PM wow great information ipioe
Never heard that before.
Although new german stadiums has got max. 34° i know that the Siganl iduna Park in Dortmund has got a 37 or 38 tier
Bernabeu was i think max. 40° (3rd tier)
Sorry, no section of the Mestalla, but the steapest i know is Bombanera

2nd tier 36°
3rd tier 45°

lpioe November 23rd, 2007, 05:29 PM ^^ 45° is incredible
Do you know if there are handrails in this part of the stadium?
Btw I got the information from a book I rented from the library.
http://www.amazon.com/Stadia-Design-Development-Guide-Geraint/dp/0750645342
It's a very good read if you are interested in stadium designs. I found the pages about sightlines particulary useful, since I didn't include them before.
www.sercan.de November 23rd, 2007, 05:46 PM I think stands with over 34° has got handrails.
And IMO Bombanera has got them also

Some things Im wondering about:
It seems like they want to keep the floodlight masts? Whereas they said in the beginning that they would take them down.
It also seems like they keep those removable stands which are placed close to the pitch.
Why would they do that? Cant they built some new concrete ones whilst theyre at it?
And what is the story behind that escalator on the western stand?
www.sercan.de January 14th, 2008, 12:04 PM IMo its like this
West and East (stands behind the goals) will be demolished and new stands will be built. As you can see they are closer to the pitch and different.
East has got suites
North and South will get a 3rd tier

No, aparently that wont happen.
Maybe that drawing here is a bit older and from a time when they were still planning to rebuilt those stands.
But now they simply will put up a new roof, add a third tier and give it a new exterior.
The building of new stands will be postponed though as far as I know.
And that sucks!

Benn February 8th, 2009, 03:05 AM 45° is the steepest i ve ever seen (Bernabeu 3 and La Bombanera 3rd tiers and maybe mestalla 3rd)
IMO 45° is the max.
The Kiphuth exhibition pool at yale is more than a 45 degree angle for sure, and has one of the most unique layouts i've seen, with concourses every other row.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2c/KiphuthPool.jpg
www.sercan.de February 8th, 2009, 11:31 AM We need a cross section :)
But looks like 45° to me.
Benn February 9th, 2009, 06:23 AM Yeah I'm afraid I don't have one, I want to say 48 or so just looking at it, but it is ridiculous at any rate.
www.sercan.de February 9th, 2009, 12:32 PM Yes. It has got just 13 rows but is high like a 25-30 2 tier arena :D

Alemanniafan February 10th, 2009, 01:45 AM Yeah I'm afraid I don't have one, I want to say 48 or so just looking at it, but it is ridiculous at any rate. Well photos don't help muc to tell how steep a tribune is. The perspective just changes the angles far too much to tell, the pool for example is photographed from up above looking almost straight onto the tribune. A picture from such a position allways looks far steeper than one taken from the side, fairly similar to a crossection. And standing there guessing the angle is also not much help. One simply can't really subjectively guess how steep a stand is very acurately.
By the way I didn't find any crossections, but the stadium in Ličge the "Stade de Sclessin" has some very, very steep stands. I don't know how steep the stands there are exactly, but the upper rank is definetely steeper than any other stadium I've ever been to. >>Here<< (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stade_de_Sclessin) is a Wikipedia link.
(PS: when you look at the pictures keep in mind it only has a capacity of 38.034 spectators and not more)
Maybe someone has one or more crossections from this stadium available here?
Oh and if you're looking for the steepest stand ever, not just in a stadium or arena or pool, you might want to take a look at some of those old traditional anatomy lecturehalls in traditional universities. Those are often really mindblowing steep, but sadly usually rather small.
G.C. February 10th, 2009, 02:41 AM Some drunken mathematics for that swimming pool :D :
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/4241/kiphuthpoolvb7.png
Explained:
The average white woman is 5'3'' tall. A row makes up 5/8 of her height, 3'3'' (99.06 cm), all we need in the row width, I'm guessing 90cm minimum as this is a Uni with a lot of money to burn. That gives us 47 degrees :D

Seems excessive to me...... but From the picture it looks like the door way plus its lintel is equivalent in height to 3 rows. ie 2.2+0.3= 2.5m therefore each riser would be approx 0.83m high. With 1m tread, rake = 39 degs, with 0.9m tread, rake = 43 degs, with 0.8m tread, rake = 46 degs, 0.75m tread, rake = 48 degs. I think the riser height estimate wont be far off, depends how much legroom there is.....
Benn February 11th, 2009, 07:08 PM It's an older facility so the leg room may not be great, and Ivy league athletic facilities on the whole are nothing special, it's realy acidemics first. Harvard has barely touched their stadium since 1903, Yale and the others are mostly in the same boat. The big public schools tend to devote a lot more time and money to athletics in general.
Hatillense February 11th, 2009, 07:34 PM Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jose Costa Rica is very steep 45 degrees on the east and west stands. I don't have a section plan It was built on 1972. But here are a couple of pictures.

There's no point. The stadium holds 60,832....more than enough for the Scottish league. It's not like Old Trafford where they can rely on Everton/Arsenal/Liverpool fans to take up the away section... sometimes both Celtic and Rangers have to entertain teams with only 3 or 400 fans.
Celtic and Rangers are freaks in their environment...it would be equivelant to Arsenal and Man Utd playing in the Irish League.
berkshire royal April 3rd, 2009, 01:28 AM ^^
I disagree I think both could average 60,000+ comfortably and think that a 65-70,000 stadium would be fine sure there would probably be a 2/3,000 gaps for the smaller games but there is huge demand for the old firm and European games. It would only be a problem if they charged English ticket prices which are stupid and overpriced for England let alone for the SPL.

Yes, since 1970...
More pics in the Lost stadiums thread !
altuzarra27 April 8th, 2009, 12:36 PM Estadio Olympico (Madrid) has to be one of the best examples of sports architecture ever designed! The majority of the Estadio Olympico - the track and field area - sits in a sunken bowl in the ground with the first tier of seating wrapped around its sides. Towering over this is a huge plate-like tier of seating that sits, tectonic like, on an array of massive curved walls. In between the walls are the staircases scooping the spectators up to their seats in the heavens. Freed of the pressure to provide all the commercial opportunities for money making which blight many stadia around the world, the architects have seized the opportunity to produce a raw, powerful, expressive, elegant and un-compromised architecture representative, in many ways, of the sporting ideal!

AJKwak April 29th, 2010, 06:33 PM can anyone tell me what's the usual height of a row, for example height of row on Emirates stadium (and also length), on first bowl? thanks
Height is usually something between 200 mm (8 inches) - 540 mm (21˝ inches). Row depth recommeded minimum is 800 mm (31˝ inches.) Height 540 mm and depth 800 mm is about 34 degrees = maximum allowed.
