Let's take a ride on Slovenian highways! :)
The Slovenian road network consists of 537 km (334 mi) of motorways/freeways and 60 km (37 mi) of 4-lane expressways:
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/system2010.jpg
You can find more information on http://www.dars.si/Default.aspx?lang=2.
For a more "local" thread about Slovenian motorways click http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=435126.
I'll start with the Ljubljana Ring, a 4-lane ringroad, surrounding the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, a city of 260,000 inhabitants and my hometown. :) Its length is almost 30 km (18 mi), of which 20 km (12 mi) is motorway/freeway (general speed limit 130 km/h (80 mph)), and the remaining 10 km (6 mi) is expressway (general speed limit 100 km/h (62 mph)). The first part of it was put in traffic in 1979, and it was finished in 1999. The photos of it were all taken today by me. :)
Thanks for this map to our forumer Chire! :) A1 and A2 are motorways/freeways ("A" stands for "avtocesta" = motorway/freeway in Slovenian), H3 is the 4-lane expressway ("H" stands for "hitra cesta" = expressway in Slovenian). The A2 motorway/freeway between the Ring and Šentvid (5.5 km) will be put in traffic next year. With its completion the expressway network of Ljubljana will be finished. :)

Let's go... Sorry for the bad picture, they will improve, I just wanted to show you where I started. I started in the northeastern corner of the Ljubljana Ring, at the interchange Zadobrova, between H3 and A1, heading to the A1 (also E57 and the V. (5th) Pan-European Transport Corridor), and starting on the eastern bypass. :)

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/acobro004sm2.jpg
We're turning right, to the southern bypass (A1, A2, E70, Corridors V and X (10)). :)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/acobro007qw4.jpg
We joined A2 from Novo mesto and Zagreb and are heading towards west. Note a mistake: we're not on E61 yet. :)

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/acobro031kc0.jpg
We left the A2 motorway and are continuing on the H3 expressway. As there was no sign for its beginning  (only "H3"), I'm showing you sign for its end. :)

Exit for Kranj and Villach, 3 km of 4-lane road with intersections through the city, until you reach motorway. We're continuing straight forward on the northern bypass (still H3), and therefore leaving the E61 and Corridor X. These were the last 2 km of the H3 expressway, still transit (until the new motorway is completed).

pilotos March 13th, 2007, 11:14 AM Nice roads and the pavement seems fresh on most of them, are they new or just recently maintained?

The sign says 80, is this because of the tunnel or thats the speed limit generally?

All those on the pictures are relatively old, but well maintained! 80 km/h is because of the tunnel and the interchange, normally it is 130 km/h outside of tunnels.
ChrisZwolle March 13th, 2007, 01:28 PM Some tips for road photography:
* Use the most optical zoom as available, so you not get the car interior. This made it possible so shoot even pics from the back seat without getting the interior on it.
* DO NOT use digital zoom!
* Leave the camera on automatic
* Try to shoot pics on days with as much daylight as possible, this way you don't get so many blurred pics.
* The winter/spring/fall period is not so good, because the low sun, and the less light. The more light you got the better the pics will be.
* Do not use the flasher! Other people will be distracted, think it will be a speed camera, or even become angry.
* It is safer to take pics as a passenger, and try to avoid taking pics while driving at busy roads. Traffic safety must come first.
* Driving south makes the most pics overlighted. Driving North on a clear day is the best. Drive west in the morning, east in the afternoon, because of the sunlight.
x-type March 13th, 2007, 01:37 PM i doubt wheather those pics are old - i didn't see exit and knot numbers on SLO roads yet!

Because the tunnel, and the intersection immediatly after it.
Verso March 13th, 2007, 03:04 PM i doubt wheather those pics are old - i didn't see exit and knot numbers on SLO roads yet!
I took the pix yesterday, and yes, these signs with knot numbers are new, but the ringroad, as I wrote, was completed in 1999 (the first part was opened in 1979).
pilotos March 13th, 2007, 08:02 PM Hm well so they arent old, 99 isnt old, the highway that passes near my place was completed in 96 and is in great condition(seems new), but anyway still those roads are excellent.
edolen1 March 13th, 2007, 08:11 PM Pilotos: Only the eastern section with the tunnel was completed in 1999. The rest was completed by 1988.
Verso: Yeah, the new regulation prescribing exit numbering came into force a couple of months ago. It also eliminated some inconsistencies in the signage system and further unified it with the European standard. But the exit numbers have been put on the signs rather unaesthetically, unfortunately..
By the way, nice pics!

Great reportage!

Nephasto March 15th, 2007, 01:10 AM ^^He would have done much better pictures if he didn't take then at the end of the day. ;)
Just a little more light needed for the pics to be perfect.

Exactly. I regret for being too lazy to get my butt on the road earlier in the day. Yesterday I went to take photos of a local expressway at even LATER time than on monday, and they ALL turned out shaky. All those kilometers and money for the gas for nothing! :wallbash:
antenor March 16th, 2007, 07:03 PM ^^ do you have the camera set on auto?
Verso March 16th, 2007, 09:04 PM ^^ How could I do that? Besides, you don't always take photos in the same direction.:)
edolen1 March 16th, 2007, 09:22 PM Umm.. automatic.. means it automatically adjusts the settings for an optimum picture when you shoot a photo..
And c'mon, we need mo' pics! :D
Verso March 16th, 2007, 10:57 PM Oh, I thought he meant set on the car (auto:D:D). Yes, I have on auto(matic:)). And yeah, a few more photos are on their way, the Imageshack wasn't working before. And 'nough of the chit-chat.:gunz::p
Verso March 17th, 2007, 12:25 AM As a supplement to the expressway network of Ljubljana serves a short, almost 2-km 4-lane expressway, passing by a Ljubljana district Črnuče. It's designated as G104 ("G" stands for "glavna cesta" = highway / main road (looking internationally, it isn't important though); "G" doesn't appear on signs, only "104"). It isn't designated as H*, because only a very short part of the G104 road is expressway. It was put in traffic in 1981. I took the pictures yesterday.
Let's begin... Don't be surprised, if cars in front of me suddenly disappear from the next picture, I namely drove more than once on the road to get better photos. :) I started at the interchange between the H3 expressway and G104, reconstructed as roundabout in 1996.

Approaching the Tomačevo Roundabout.

The "end" of Ljubljana (but just because we're on expressway ;)).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104005cm5.jpg
Crossing the almost 1,000-km-long Sava River.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104006vz6.jpg
But in Ljubljana it isn't wide yet (no, I don't lock myself in car, the button is fu*ked up ).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104007hh3.jpg
Really doesn't feel like in a city here...
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104008yd6.jpg
The end. :)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104027kr1.jpg
In Ljubljana "again". ;) From here on the road continues with 4 lanes for another 5 km, but with intersections, through urban area, and with a speed limit of 70 km/h (43 mph).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104028ha0.jpg
A few more, random photos. Going in the other direction (approaching the expressway).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104013om3.jpg
Back in the Tomačevo Roundabout.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104021xy7.jpg
This is not the G104, but H3. We're obviously getting new type of arrows.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104036tb3.jpg
Let's hope not many road tankers will crash here. :)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/g104052sp1.jpg
All Slovenian motorways/freeways and expressways are video monitored. However, they won't fine you in case you speed, it may only be used in investigating car accidents.

Alex Von Königsberg March 17th, 2007, 05:21 AM Nice pictures, man!
I noticed that in some European countries they put extra signage on motorways. For instance, "give way" and "only straight" on the on-ramp and "no right turn" to prohibit entering the on-ramps from the motorway (i.e. wrong way). To me it really seems unnecessary.
I also noticed that some signs have yellow background ("give way") and some signs have white (speed limit). Unlike in Slovenia, in Baltic and some Scandinavian countries, if they use yellow background, then they use it for all signs.
Verso March 17th, 2007, 12:46 PM ^^ It's like that in Slovenia as well, but yellow signs are old, and white signs are new (adjustment to EU standards). The thing is that this changing from yellow to white (once it already was white:scouserd:) isn't such an important issue, so it's altogether gonna take about 10 years (the first white signs were installed already a few years ago).
antenor March 17th, 2007, 01:40 PM ^^ How could I do that? Besides, you don't always take photos in the same direction.:)

Not that I'd know of (well, I certainly don't have set on "night scene"). Not that I have some special camera (Olympus μ 410 digital), but it's not easy to take photos while driving.

Verso March 17th, 2007, 04:07 PM Ljubljana City, it's ok, if you post some random photos, but I was having in mind a more settled reportages, where I'd drive on all Slovenian highways and take photos of them. I think that would be more in order, having the same highway in one post, plus not seeing the same sections again and again. And when I'm finished with taking photos of all the highways, we'd start putting in random photos, after all, I don't wanna see this thread vegetating for months. I'm planning to go in a different corner of Slovenia every week, so the thread won't die out. I somehow like the idea better. :)
edolen1 March 17th, 2007, 04:58 PM Just a few comments:

Oh God no, please don't tell me they're actually changing the arrows here as well!
The current ones are much nicer IMO..
http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/8163/g104049tz0.jpg
Actually, those cameras are used for monitoring traffic (you can check them yourself, at http://www.promet.si/?id=25), I'm not sure they can be used by the Police in investigating car accidents, and they don't cover the whole motorway network in detail, just a couple of sections across the whole network. If they covered the whole network that sign would be useless, since it would have to be put everywhere. :tongue2:
Verso March 17th, 2007, 05:05 PM ^^ They are only installed on on-ramps, and maybe they just haven't installed them yet on all places; I'm seeing more and more of them...
edolen1 March 17th, 2007, 05:25 PM Are we talking about cameras or the new arrows?
Hehe, if we're talking about the cameras, they won't be installed on all places, just dangerous sections and sections with a lot of traffic. The only places which are fully monitored by security cameras and automated traffic controlling systems (those LED-displays every 500 metres) are currently the sections over Trojane and from Kozina to Koper, which have to be due to the large amount of tunnels and the terrain. However, it's expected that the Ljubljana Ring will be the next section to be upgraded with this "smart motorway" system. :)

About the arrows... Yeah, they changed them 13.1.2007 together with some other traffic signs... http://www.tecajcpp.com/cpp/izrecne.php
I don't like those now arrows either... They're the same like Italian...
ChrisZwolle March 17th, 2007, 07:23 PM Are there many traffic jams in Slovenia?
Verso March 17th, 2007, 08:16 PM ^^ Only in rush hours and summer, and in and around Ljubljana and other bigger towns (including Koper, but that's more because of tourism by the Adriatic). Here (http://www.dc.gov.si/fileadmin/dc.gov.si/pageuploads/Stetje_prometa/Promet05.pdf) you can see the ammount of traffic in Slovenia in 2005.
Are we talking about cameras or the new arrows?Neither.:) I was talking about SIGNS, depicting a camera and the text "video nadzor prometa".
edolen1 March 17th, 2007, 08:40 PM Sorry, won't do it again :)
About the arrows... Yeah, they changed them 13.1.2007 together with some other traffic signs... http://www.tecajcpp.com/cpp/izrecne.php
I don't like those now arrows either... They're the same like Italian...
Actually I meant I like the Italian ones.. Now we're gonna have German arrows on half of the signs (the round blue ones) and Italian arrows on directional signs.. Just great..
Verso March 17th, 2007, 08:44 PM Oh, who cares about some stupid arrows...
Pobbie March 17th, 2007, 08:48 PM Nice photographs! A small but not overcrowded country with lots of nice scenery makes for a fantastic road experience.

That last picture reminds me of our A24. I'll need to take some pictures next time I go there.
Verso March 29th, 2007, 11:57 PM Let's go to Styria (Štajerska)! This is the most important highway in Slovenia, connecting the three largest Slovenian cities/towns (Ljubljana, Maribor and Celje). It runs from Ljubljana to Austria, its length being 134 km (83 mi), of which there's currently 121 km (75 mi) of motorway/freeway, 7 km (4 mi) of 4-lane expressway and 6 km (4 mi) of urban 4-lane road. The missing section (Maribor motorway bypass) is going to be finished in 2009. The motorway's mostly been constructed in the last decade. I took the photos yesterday.
Fasten your seat belts... we're flying to Styria! This is where I started, in the northeastern corner of the Ljubljana Ring, at the interchange Zadobrova, between the A1 (eastern Ljubljana bypass) and H3 (northern Ljubljana bypass), continuing straight forward on the A1 motorway/freeway, the Styrian Highway (also E57 and Corridor V).

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5007vf6.jpg
By the toll booth Kompolje (1.55 € for cars). On my way back I didn't have to pay, because a police car on emergency drive rushed right behind me, so they had to open the ramp before I could even open my wallet.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5008nr4.jpg
Soon after the toll booth, begins about 15 km (10 mi) long section around the Trojane Pass, with a speed, limited to 100 km/h (62 mph). It's the most beautiful part of the highway, too bad it's just beginning of spring, so the greenery is not green yet.

We're by interchange Slivnica, close to Maribor. The A1 motorway/freeway continues straight forward, but until the entire Maribor motorway bypass is completed, it's more of a local motorway (photos of it will come later), so we're turning right, for Maribor and Austria.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5050fj1.jpg
A strange motorway interchange, where we could already say we're on another motorway, but as it's still a little too short (just for another mile or so), it's still A1. Anyway, we've come to its end (it will continue later again). Man, I always forget to clean my car's armature, this dust is so ugly. :ohno:
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5051yy4.jpg
We're continuing on the R430 ("R" stands for "regionalna cesta" = regional road; the "R" doesn't appear on signs, only "430"; I don't know how such an important road can be regional :hammer:).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5052vj2.jpg

Only 10 km (6 mi) to the border. As there's only sign for Graz here (and the unnecessary "international border crossing Šentilj"), sign for Vienna (about 240 km (150 mi) from here) would be nice. :)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5076gs9.jpg

I think it's time for new pavement.

We're leaving the G1, E59 and Corridor Xa, and are continuing on the A1 motorway for Ljubljana.

We're on part of the future Maribor motorway bypass (but I don't think it's already considered E57).

"Letališče" = airport (usually written "aerodrom"). The Maribor Airport has few traffic though. A couple of kilometers later we join the main motorway/freeway Graz - Maribor - Ljubljana.

x-type March 30th, 2007, 10:55 AM Lenti
ok, questions:
1. how far from Ljubljana is first tunnel (in direction MB) and how far is cp Kompolje?
2. are there any plans about starting with closed system of paying toll?
Verso March 30th, 2007, 03:03 PM ^^
1. The first tunnel - about 20 km from the interchange Zadobrova in Ljubljana (A1-H3), pay toll Kompolje - around 15 km from the same interchange; the numbers can vary a bit, I'm not so sure.
2. No, they are keeping it the way it is (I know, 3 pay tolls between Ljubljana and Maribor, and another one until you reach the Austrian border:sleepy:), because soon we're getting electronic toll collection or sth like that, so there's no point in changing the system now.
Btw, you can soon expect nicer photos (of my car), in three days I'm changing from Peugeot 405 to Peugeot 406, yay. :banana2:
P.S.: @oogabooga, I just saw you viewing this thread; what the hell is the Slovenian flag doing in your avatar??? :D :D :)
x-type March 30th, 2007, 07:41 PM because already in 2008 we're getting electronic toll collection or sth like that, so it's no point in changing the system now.
so you're leaving this way of paying toll with toll-booths??
Verso March 30th, 2007, 07:53 PM ^^ Of course, isn't that what the entire EU is doing in 2008? Btw, toll-booths will still be there by 2011, but the toll will be collected electronically from all vehicles; after 2011 it's gonna be collected via satellites, if it doesn't get delayed.

I wonder why there are no signs towards austria in Maribor. Only Sentilj, no Graz or something.

And I don't know how Lendava (close to Hungary) can be on the sign, but not Murska Sobota, which is much bigger (could be just "M. Sobota"); it's like having a sign for Lisbon in Barcelona, but not for Madrid. (even if Spain and Portugal were in the same country) Btw, Pobrežje is part of Maribor, so it's necessary.

You might experience some with optical zoom. (not digital!)
I use it all the time, actually, i took 213 pics today with optical zoom out of my car, and i have to throw away some 3 of it (because of too much sunlight). I have very rarely blurred pics because of my optical zoom. But then again, it's your choice, i like your pics anyway ;)

Verso April 1st, 2007, 07:25 PM ^^ You're probably talking about the time between 2008 and 2011 (supposedly), b/c after that we won't need any toll booths any more, as toll's gonna be collected via satellites. But then, how can the system be closed, when now it's open (except on the Ljubljana-Koper motorway)? They won't install n_e_w toll booths on every interchange, or what??
edolen1 April 1st, 2007, 07:40 PM I doubt it, they'll probably just install electronic sensors on all exits and keep the open systems for those not paying electronically. :)

Verso April 1st, 2007, 10:05 PM ^^ No idea. :)
edolen1 April 1st, 2007, 10:46 PM Currently the project is still being planned. However there are many options for the type of electronic toll. One is by GPS/Galileo satellite receivers, another is by upgrading the ABC system and the third is by utilising mobile phones. I don't know if things have changed since, but when I read about it a year or so ago they were talking about that..
Verso April 2nd, 2007, 11:58 PM This highway runs from Pesnica by Maribor to Hungary. Its length is 90 km (56 mi), of which there's currently only 10 km (6 mi) of motorway/freeway (built in 2002/2003 to avoid Murska Sobota) and 80 km (50 mi) of 2-lane road. Its completion is scheduled for the next year. It has an interesting history of traffic intensity. It only became important in 1991, when Slovenia got independent, and it thus became illogical for trucks to drive between Slovenia and Hungary through another country (Croatia), although that's shorter and faster. Before that it was only a regional road. The second boom occured in 2004, when Slovenia, Hungary and some other countries joined the European Union, which increased freight traffic significantly. We encountered the last boom in January 2007, when also Romania and Bulgaria entered the EU. Freight traffic through Serbia and Croatia thus decreased by more than 20 %. That's why this highway is full of trucks, you'll see by yourselves. By the time Croatia joins the EU, there will have been a full motorway connection between the Slovenian and Hungarian capitals (Ljubljana and Budapest). The pictures were taken by me five days ago.
I started at the interchange between H2, A1 and G3, constructed as a roundabout (called Pesnica).http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5073yp7.jpg
We took the first exit, and are now on the G3 (also Corridor V (all the way to the border and beyond)).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5082nr9.jpg
Near a village, called Pernica (not Pesnica). On my way back this is where my car reached 190,000 km. (half way to the Moon :D)

This (Belarusian) truck was in front of me all the time. It's not easy to overtake here, because of a winding road and heavy on-going traffic, and even if you do so, you'll encounter another truck. :) My average speed was 40 km/h (25 mph). :sleepy:

There's a very interesting-looking pharmacy by this roundabout, but almost all we can see is my car. :wallbash:
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5090co6.jpg
Finally on the A5 motorway/freeway. The speed limit is, surprisingly, only 100 km/h (62 mph).
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5091ez6.jpg
You thought we were finally on a high-speed road? Think again - what on Earth is going on? I stepped out of the car and figured out that some truckers had occupied the overtaking lane. :bash: The traffic jam (caused mostly by trucks) was almost 10 km long. And now we're standing right on the longest Slovenian bridge, over river Mura ("Mur" in German) - 833 m. As you can see by the jogger on the left, the bridge has extra lanes for pedestrians.

"Motorway"...
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5094hm8.jpg
After we cross the Mura, Prekmurje begins. We passed by a rest area and exit for Murska Sobota, and are now looking at the G3, that is - trucks.

The train Venice - Ljubljana - Budapest runs also through Croatia. But now you're looking at the railway between Ljubljana and Budapest, going directly from Slovenia to Hungary.

They better finish the motorway on time, this is unbearable.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5103nv3.jpg
We're entering the Slovenian-Hungarian-speaking part of Slovenia. :) Somewhere around here, as we were standing in a traffic jam, a police car came across, and as I was the first one by car after all those trucks, the policeman told me to overtake them right after he and two trucks behing him leave. Ok, he goes on, the two trucks go by, so I start overtaking... and almost crash with another truck! Damn cop! :bash:
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5105ki7.jpg
We've reached the biggest Slovenian-Hungarian-speaking town, Lendava (Lendva) - 3,500 inhabitants. :) As I can see, despite the fact that Hungary built the M70 expressway almost to the Slovenian border a few years ago, the border crossing there is too small to handle so much freight traffic (motorway will be opened next year), and therefore the main road still goes through Lenti. To avoid all these trucks, cars were at the time being forbidden to turn left (the police were regulating the traffic, but you can't see them, because they are right in front of this truck), so I had to turn right. If one still wants to go to Lenti, (s)he can go through Lendava, instead of via the bypass. But if you just want to go to Hungary (Budapest, for example), there are later signs for Hungary (H), leading to the Hungarian M70 expressway, so that's how it's regulated. :)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5106oi5.jpg
I drove through Lendava and am now joining the Lendava bypass (the G3 again). I'm turning left, because just 1 km ahead there's a border crossing between Slovenia and Hungary, called Dolga vas (Hosszúfalu) / Rédics. From there continues a Hungarian 2-lane road, number 86.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5124yh4.jpg
This is how the border crossing looks like.

http://www.kompas-mts.si/fotografija.asp?j=1&id=4&kraj=20&objekt=81&slika=dolga-vas.jpg
On the Lendava bypass. As I was prohibited to drive here before, and as there were no cops at the earlier intersection, I sneaked in. :naughty: As you can see, I'm the only one by car here, everything else is trucks...
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5125dh7.jpg
...trucks...
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5127cu0.jpg
...and again - trucks. Welcome to the free market of half a billion people.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5128sx2.jpg
But the motorway is under construction...
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5132sb1.jpg
Now let's go to the border crossing, from where we can reach the Hungarian M70 expressway. We firstly had to drive 100 m on the G109, and then took the R443. On the first picture, instead of the traffic sign, all we can see is my lion's butt.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5107ma3.jpg
This short section to the border is inhabited all along.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5108ez0.jpg
We're entering the last village before the border - Pince (Pince :D). I know we're in a bilingual area, but what's the purpose of writing two identical names? :)
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a1a5109op8.jpg
We've reached the border crossing between Slovenia and Hungary, called Pince/Tornyiszentmiklós. As you can see, it's definitely too small to handle transit freight traffic. ;) Besides, despite being an international border crossing, it's open only between 6 am and 10 pm. In Hungary you continue on a 2-lane road, number 75333, but in just a few kilometers you reach the 2-lane M70 expressway, which soon merges in the M7 motorway/freeway.

edolen1 April 3rd, 2007, 12:38 AM Nice! Can't wait for the A5 to be finished - interestingly enough, it won't have emergency lanes from Vučja vas all the way to Pince, don't know why. I guess the speed limit will be 100 km/h the whole way.. :(
x-type April 3rd, 2007, 02:43 PM I guess the speed limit will be 100 km/h the whole way.. :(
that's because it is not full profiled (no emergency lanes).
nice pics (instead of few, for instance your lion's but :D)
edolen1 April 3rd, 2007, 02:50 PM ^^Yes, I realize that, it's weird though..
Verso April 3rd, 2007, 02:54 PM that's because it is not full profiled (no emergency lanes).
True, but Jesenice bypass is the same (without hard shoulders), and the speed limit is 130 km/h. The same thing is with the motorway by Nova Gorica, where 100 km/h is just the recommended speed, the speed limit is otherwise 130 km/h.
edolen1 April 3rd, 2007, 03:06 PM ^^Indeed, and that motorway is actually the H4 expressway! Urgh, this is confusing..
Verso April 3rd, 2007, 03:26 PM ^^ It's the H4 MOTORWAY there, don't forget. ;) The road number doesn't necessarily mean it's expressway.
edolen1 April 3rd, 2007, 05:01 PM H stands for hitra cesta so that isn't logical. Anyway I expect these irregularities to be taken care of soon..
Verso April 4th, 2007, 12:00 AM ^^ I wouldn't like that to be changed, as it would only make it more confusing. I like an entire section to be designated the same, and as there's more expressway there than motorway, it's better to be H4, instead of A4 or whatever (well, A4 is already reserved). Besides, that motorway isn't all that top-notch (without hard shoulders, recommended speed limit 100 km/h). Although, I wouldn't like (for example) the whole Ljubljana - Jesenice road to be A2 (meaning also the 2-lane sections:D). I think the H4 is just a special case. It's nevertheless clear where motorway and where expressway there are.
Besides, stop complaining, or else they will turn the motorway into expressway! :D Seriously, I can't imagine the motorway and expressway there being designated differently. :)
edolen1 April 4th, 2007, 12:32 PM Why? They are technically exactly the same..
Verso April 4th, 2007, 04:28 PM ^^ Well, that's exactly why. :) (I don't think I understand your question though)
edolen1 April 4th, 2007, 05:13 PM Oh, wait, I thought you were talking about the colour of the signs, hehe. No, the road number should definitely stay the same, the colours should be unified, and thus the speed limit! :)
Verso April 4th, 2007, 11:09 PM ^^ To which color would that be? :D If into blue (expressway), then you wouldn't be allowed to drive 130 km/h on the current motorway any more. :( If into green (motorway), well, then, 130 km/h is maybe too much for that bora wind over there. :P Hey, even smilies in this post are green and blue! :D :D
(Maybe green (motorway) with a speed limit 100 km/h, like on the A5?)
edolen1 April 5th, 2007, 12:01 AM Nah, I thought of blue. Currently it's 130 on the green stretch, but the recommended speed is 100 km/h. And besides, people dirve over 100 km/h on the whole stretch, even over 130 km/h.. ;)
Verso April 5th, 2007, 12:10 AM ^^ I like green more, b/c you may drive 130 km/h. :D And if you exceed the allowed speed and caught on radar, you'll still be better off by speed limit 130 than 100 km/h. ;)
edolen1 April 5th, 2007, 12:14 AM Hehe, true! Anyway, we need more pix! :D
Oh and by the way, the amount of trucks in Pomurje is unbelievable! I knew it was a lot but never in my wildest dreams could I imagine it was THAT much! I'm wondering why they haven't assassinated somebody because of it yet! Anyway, won't be long now.. Next year, it'll all be over. :)
edolen1 April 9th, 2007, 01:25 AM Well, since Verso hasn't bothered to post any new pix, in the meantime until he posts his, I'm posting mine. Mind you they're a bit old (up to two years old) so some stuff may have been changed. And excuse the lighting and dirty windshield, I couldn't do anything about the lighting, since it was on a long-distance trip, and the bugs.. Well, they were some nasty buggers sticking to the glass like that.. :D

The reason why i don't take pics of Dutch Motorways (Autosnelwegen) is that the entire network has almost been on the pic by our fellow forumers Frits and others. The majority of those pics can be found on www.roadpics.net (http://www.roadpics.net/), now only compromising the Netherlands, but Belgium and Luxemburg will be covered soon.

Verso April 24th, 2007, 01:12 AM We're going to the Littoral (Primorska)! :banana2: This highway connects Ljubljana with the Slovenian coast of the Adriatic Sea. In order to reach it, you have to go through the Inner Carniola (Notranjska), mostly karstic region, that's why it's so sparsely populated. Its length is 95 km (59 mi), and is motorway/freeway all the way. More than half of it was built in the 1970s, and the rest mostly in the last decade. I took the photos yesterday.
I started in the southwestern corner of the Ljubljana Ring, at interchange Kozarje, between the A2 (western Ljubljana bypass) and A1/A2 (southern Ljubljana bypass), turning right, onto the A1 motorway (also E61, E70 and Corridor V).

Fern April 24th, 2007, 03:23 AM Great pictures and motorways! I've only got two questions for you: Why is there no hardshoulder in some parts of that motorway and does that electronic board switch from english to slovenian every few seconds or is it permanently in english?
Verso April 24th, 2007, 04:54 AM ^^ If there are three lanes (additional for slow vehicles on slopes), there's never hard shoulder by. :)

mgk920 April 24th, 2007, 05:02 AM Nice pictures! That last set looked like a drive across upstate New York on I-86/Southern Tier Expressway and a sidetrip on I-88.
:)
BTW, with the EU's 'Borderless Zone', when can we expect the various Slovenian border crossing checkpoints to disappear?
Oh yea, Congrats on your country's accession to the Euro! (I like your €0.20 coin's design, too.)

Alex Von Königsberg April 24th, 2007, 06:02 AM A1 looks very well maintained on these pictures. Plus, those signs giving distances to the cities in Italy in Croatia really make it feel more international.
By the way, does anybody know if the US freeway signs provide distances to some of the Canadian cities? And vice versa?
ChrisZwolle April 24th, 2007, 11:55 AM Great pics. But there are too many destinations on the distance signs...

earthJoker April 24th, 2007, 06:21 PM I suppose that a emergency exit if your breaks fail.
Verso April 24th, 2007, 06:31 PM ^ At the top of the slope is probably sand (and perhaps some barrels at the end), so a truck can stop if breaks stop working.
EDIT: yeah, earthJoker's already answered. :) It's like on the Swiss A12 just before Lake Geneva. :)

Regarding the hardshoulder, I thought all motorways were supposed to have it irrespective of the number of lanes.
edolen1 April 25th, 2007, 12:34 AM Well, that third lane is just a temporary third lane on steeper slopes, therefore it doesn't have to have a hard shoulder. It's not a Slovenian invention, though, it's found in other countries as well..
Verso April 25th, 2007, 01:22 AM ^^ Yeah well, on one such third lane my mum ran out of gas a few weeks ago.  She didn't pay attention to the fuel level, and all she needed, were another 100 meters, then the motorway sweeps down to a gas station. :D

Verso April 25th, 2007, 07:07 PM Let's take a ride along the Adriatic Coast (Obala)! :dj: Slovenian coast is only 47 km (29 mi) long, it lies on the Istrian peninsula and is squeezed between Italy and Croatia. The highway's length is 29 km (18 mi), of which there's currently 1 km of motorway, 10 km (6 mi) of 4-lane expressway and 18 km (11 mi) of 2-lane road. Most of the expressway was built in the beginning of the 1990s or sooner, and the rest in the last decade. Its completion is expected in the upcoming years. I took the photos 2 days ago.
I started by the border crossing between Slovenia and Italy, called Škofije / Rabuiese (Rabujez). I took the last exit before the border and turned around towards Croatia.

That's very comon... not to have a hard shoulder when you have an additional lane for slow vehicles.
It's that way in Portugal too.... when can see it for example on the steeper slopes of A1, a bit to the north of Torres Novas, or near Leiria.
I have 2 photo's of it, taken on A1, near Leiria:

Alex Von Königsberg April 26th, 2007, 07:26 AM Yeah, you did an awesome job, Verso! Slovenian highways look mint. I can't wait until I hit European straßen this summer :)
Just to add my $0.02 about the hardshoulder driving. In mountain areas of Oregon and California, trucks with heavy load often drive on the shoulder with hazards on. I don't know if they are required to do so or if it is simply a mere courtesy, but it really makes life easier for passenger cars especially on a 2-lane motorway.

Verso April 26th, 2007, 04:25 PM The Vipava Highway connects the A1 with the Italian border by Nova Gorica / Gorizia. The motorway and expressway technically don't differ (also both are designated as H4), the only difference is that there's often bora wind along the expressway, therefore the speed limit 100 km/h. The motorway has a recommended speed 100 km/h, but it's allowed to drive 130 km/h. I took the photos 3 days ago.

1 km ahead there's a border crossing between Slovenia and Italy, called Vrtojba / Sant'Andrea. In Italy you continue on a rather crappy road :D officially designated as RA17 ("RA" stands for "raccordo autostradale" = motorway connection), although it's neither a motorway, nor an expressway; it's a 4-lane road with a speed limit 80 km/h, emergency stops and limited access. But it soon merges in the A4 motorway.

What are those thingies(:D) between the central crash barriers?
ChrisZwolle April 26th, 2007, 06:38 PM Those are made so you aren't bothered with headlights of other cars/trucks in the other direction. You see this sometimes in Europe, but i haven't seen it yet in my country.
Why is Údine signed first, and not later nearing the border? They could remove the "Italy" destination and replace it with a normal Italian city (even like Venezia).
edolen1 April 26th, 2007, 07:24 PM The ones saying Italija are older, since that section was built much earlier than the section which has signs saying Udine. You can also see that the one saying Italija doesn't have a road number on it, which is always put on those signs nowadays.
When they'll get changed they'll say Udine and everything.. :)
Verso April 26th, 2007, 08:39 PM Haha, total Ljubljana - Nova Gorica is actually €2.7, because nobody actually goes through Bazara, only transit traffic and trucks, everybody else gets off at Vogrsko.. :DHaha, you're right! :D Then I'll just write "Ljubljana - Gorizia". :D Yeah, I remember a sign pointing to Ljubljana in that roundabout in Nova Gorica near your house :P in some other direction than Italy, and I thought, why the hell are they in different directions already in Nova Gorica?
Btw, edolen, do you remember how the motorway (from 1996) was designated before we got the expressway? I don't think it was H4, I don't think we had these H* designations back then.
edolen1 April 26th, 2007, 09:54 PM It didn't have a designation, it was just a very short section from the border crossing to Šempeter.. I'm not sure of the designation when it was extended to Selo, but when it was extended to Ajdovščina it definitely had H4.. I think with Selo it still didn't have a designation, cuz that was back in the time the A1 was still the A10..
Nephasto April 26th, 2007, 11:41 PM I'd never noticed it. That's probably just a way of saving money! IMO motorways should have a hardshoulder all throughout their length in case a car breaks down.
Well... a standard 3 lane motorway in portugal will have the following measures in width:
inner shoulder + 3 x 3,75m lanes + 3m outer shoulder
If it's a 2 lanes motorway with additional lane for slow traffic its:
inner shoulder + 2 x 3,75m lanes + 3m(or 3,25m... not sure) outer lane for slow vehicles +1m outer shoulder
ChrisZwolle April 27th, 2007, 12:11 AM that are quite wide lanes.
We use 3,5m, but 3,2m is common in Urban areas.
We even have extra lanes which are only 2,5m wide. So that lane is hardly used.
emergency lane = 3m, but that varies from 0 - 5m in some places.
Nephasto April 28th, 2007, 02:24 AM ^^Yes... usually the motorway lanes are wide here in Portugal, being of 3,75m.
Only when the base speed of a stretch is under 100km/h or when there is a stretch with much traffic (like a stretch with 4 lanes in each direction) do we use 3,5m.
In Spain for example, they don't use 3,75m, like in the Netherlands... it's 3,5m all the way. And they use 2,5m emergency lanes, which are a bit narrow.
You have 2,5m extra lanes in there?! What for? A truck won't be able to safelly use a 2,5m width lane!
edolen1 April 28th, 2007, 02:42 AM The lanes in Slovenia are 3.75m wide, with the hard shoulder 2.5m wide. Exit lanes are 3m wide, though, and lanes for slow traffic are 3m wide as well.
Sections with a 100 km/h speed limit are 3.5m wide, though.
x-type April 28th, 2007, 11:16 AM nice pics!! finally somebody made a photo of Bazara toll plaza, but it dissapointed me totaly, it looks, khm, crapy.
ChrisZwolle April 28th, 2007, 12:57 PM You have 2,5m extra lanes in there?! What for? A truck won't be able to safelly use a 2,5m width lane!
Trucks are also no allowed to use those lanes.
They are build as a temporary widening, since all those greenies stop roadimprovement. This 2,5m lane is in the city of Zwolle, i think it is the narrowest lane we have, other extra lanes are wider, and a speed of 100km/h is allowed, but here, only 80 is allowed when the lane is open.
Here are some pics:

http://www.roadpics.net/nl/A28/A28Z/31.jpg
you can see this extra lane (we call it a "plusstrook") it ridiculously narrow, so it is barely used. And the barrier is immediatly adjacent to it.
I didn't solve the traffic jams either.
Fern April 28th, 2007, 03:04 PM Well... a standard 3 lane motorway in portugal will have the following measures in width:
inner shoulder + 3 x 3,75m lanes + 3m outer shoulder
If it's a 2 lanes motorway with additional lane for slow traffic its:
inner shoulder + 2 x 3,75m lanes + 3m(or 3,25m... not sure) outer lane for slow vehicles +1m outer shoulder
Yeah you're right, I think I've seen that system in some parts of some motorways like the A24.
In the UK and Ireland the standard lane width is 3.65m and apparently they are reducing it to 3.5m in some motorways, I assume because they want to add more lanes but there's not enough space.
edolen1 April 28th, 2007, 03:53 PM nice pics!! finally somebody made a photo of Bazara toll plaza, but it dissapointed me totaly, it looks, khm, crapy.
It's old and only used by transit traffic, so it's a bit small as well..
ChrisZwolle April 28th, 2007, 04:51 PM Are there plans to add a second tube to the Karawankentunnel? (i heard this tunnel has only 1+1 lanes)
edolen1 April 28th, 2007, 06:05 PM The Karawankentunnel has the same problem as Bazara, it only serves transit traffic, so it doesn't have enough traffic to warrant a second tube, so no, there are no plans currently to build a second tube, but in the long run we can expect it IMO, as the traffic to the Balkans will increase more and more in the future due to their economic growth and tourism.. :)

Well, they aren't going to gain alot of space with that reduction.... only 0.30m for a 2 lane motorway, which is about as good as nothing.
But maybe what that's all about is just metricization... going from 12 feet (3.65m) imperial measure to a metric 3.5m! That's good! :okay:

Traffic intensities are not the only reason to widen a road. Traffic safety or the economical development of a region are good reasons too.
edolen1 April 29th, 2007, 01:27 AM Indeed, but right now we have "bigger fish to fry", so to say.. Maybe after we're done with the motorway programme it'll get built, but right now it's not a priority..

radi6404 May 15th, 2007, 02:03 PM Verso, could you now show me the motorway lubljana - jesenice as i´ve asked you yesterday.
ChrisZwolle May 15th, 2007, 02:07 PM i'm curious about this Autocesta (is that the right Slovenian word?). :)

Oh, well... :)
Btw, Chris, it's "avtocesta", "autocesta" is in Croatian. :) But we pronounce that "v" as "w" in this case. :)

Yeah Chris, in balkanic countries they usually don´t say auto... but avto... avtobus, avtomagistrala ... in bulgaria.
edolen1 May 15th, 2007, 06:10 PM Actually that's completely arbitrary and not connected with the Balkans at all.. Just depends on the language, really.

radi6404 May 18th, 2007, 02:10 PM tonight i want see Ljubljana - Jesenice motorway !!! :p
Verso May 19th, 2007, 01:28 AM Today we're taking a trip to the mountainous region of Upper Carniola (Gorenjska)! :cheer: This highway links Ljubljana with Austria, in the direction of Germany. Internationally looking it's numbered as E61, and it's also part of the X. Corridor. Its length is 68 km (42 mi), of which 49 km is motorway, 5 km 2-lane expressway, 3 km urban 4-lane road, and 12 km is 2-lane road. It's scheduled for completion in 2010 (excluding a second tube of the Karavanke Tunnel). The motorway between Ljubljana and Kranj was opened in 1985, the one passing by Jesenice in 1993, and the rest in the last decade. The most important object on the highway, the one-tube Karavanke Tunnel (officially designated as A2), connecting Slovenia and Austria, was put in traffic in 1991. I took the photos yesterday.
We're starting in the northwestern part of the Ljubljana Ring, by exit Ljubljana-sever (north), turning right, from the H3 onto G8. Motorway is under construction, it will open next year.Exit for Kranj and Villach, 3 km of 4-lane road with intersections through the city, until you reach motorway.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a2gorenjska084pr4.jpg
I had to drive through Jesenice and arrived at the Karavanke Plateau. As the Austrian border crossing lies in Slovenia (so there wouldn't come to queues in the tunnel) and as the tunnel is charged, the area around it is fenced.

My photo of the tunnel.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/a2gorenjska088bw7.jpg
But here's a better one. ;) Karavanke Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in Slovenia, measuring 7.864 km (almost 5 mi), of which 3.45 km (44 %) lie in Slovenia and the rest in Austria. Before its opening in 1991, crossing the Karawank Mountains was pretty time-consuming and impossible for trucks (except by train). Also due to the fact that with 120 km (75 mi) they are the longest range in Europe. The tunnel's charged 6.5 €.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee119/Verso1/predorkaravankenv5.jpg
Photo: DARS
What I'm doing now is illegal! This is the only physically possible way of driving on the remaining part of the motorway, because the last exit before the border was completely closed. However, this was totally illegal and very suspicious, as I was pottering around border-crossing area. What I do for you ppl, hehe. :) A look at the border crossing Karavanke/Karawankentunnel between Slovenia and Austria. After getting out of the tunnel on the Austrian side you continue on the A11 motorway.

Verso May 19th, 2007, 02:13 AM ^ As you probably know (if you've driven there at least once at day, hehe), driving along Jesenice is nicer in the direction of Austria, b/c the valley narrows towards Austria, so it's a kinda better feeling. But, heh, what can you do. :) (btw, I couldn't drive in the other direction even physically, cuz a similar interchange to the one I used, leads you to border crossing for trucks; I wouldn't come well off there, hehe)

Ofcourse, that´s quite true, it is really impressive to drive there to the direction to Austria seeing how the mountains getting closer and closer, it is really a feeling of fear to travel there. Pictures can´t show how you feel travelling there. In Jesenice the valley is very narrow and looks really amazing but you could not take a photo of it as the last gateway was closed.
Verso May 19th, 2007, 02:30 AM it is really a feeling of fear to travel there. So true! That motorway hardly gets any sunshine, plus it's without hard shoulders, only emergency stops.

I wish we in bulgaria would have motorways leading through such beautiful mountains but that´s not possible since there is no need for this as bulgaria has not enough mountains like that to force the builders to build there, but it is better for the nature to not have motorways through the narrow valleys.

Yes, some roadworks. (this section of motorway was opened one year ago, but they left final layer of asphalt to be installed for this year because of difficult geology, which caused original asphalt to displace for 3 cm in one year)

Heh, I also see that the A2 needs some serious renovating.. And the H1.. horrendous! Looks like it's in Moldova, not in the developed world, heh.. :ohno:

x-type May 28th, 2007, 07:51 PM great pics!!
motorway looks great! i dodn't know that it won't folloe H1 all the way! i just cannot get used to often exits (here in Croatia they are more rare).
i'll be good and won't comment H1 :D i just can say that it's better to watch then to drive on it :D
and the south lane around that hill - it looks quite unsafe. i know it follows old road and curves are quite strong. i didn't know that there is no emergency lane yet! they should put concrete barriers to both sides all the way!
the best thing - a lot of service areas! well done!

radi6404 June 1st, 2007, 12:14 AM Offtopic: Hey Verso, when the new Struma motorway will pass through Dupnica, it will be similar to Jesenica as in Dupnica there are also high mountains very close and it allready looks similar to Jesenice.
ChrisZwolle June 1st, 2007, 12:02 PM I think you should change your nick to "Struma addict" ;)
wyqtor June 1st, 2007, 12:52 PM Well, Chris, I think that's understandable :) . We South-Eastern EU citizens have so few motorways and it's easy to get over-excited when we build a new one! Our respective governments are also "contributing" to our excitement by moving at snail's pace and making a normal thing like building a motorway over here look similar to constructing the 7 Great Wonders.
Here in Romania we will also get a similar brand-new motorway through the mountains, with plenty of tunnels and bridges. It will cross the beautiful Prahova Valley, underneath the steep Bucegi Mountains, and is badly needed for touristic purposes, but judging from the incompetence at the higher levels, it won't be finished anytime soon unfortunately...:ohno:
Anyway, back on topic: are there any plans for a motorway or fast road from Postojna towards Rijeka? Because I was very surprised to travel on a normal 2-lane road in the rich Slovenia and then switch to a newly-built shiny motorway after the border at Rupa, in poorer Croatia.
radi6404 June 1st, 2007, 01:15 PM slovenia isn´t that developed with motorways man, i remember times where the roads where realy awful, there were a few kilometers motoorway in the whole route Jesenice - croatian border. I was wondering but now almost everything is motorway.

It´s fucking sad that the corrupted whoresons do nothing, why does EU not control those whroesons that they finally really start building motorways and new railways not only on one or two places but in our whole countries so that finally there is work. I remember Hungary building very good motorways 1997 - 1998, they worked like hell there, building and building the motorway and in Bulgaria just now something happens, in 1998 there were probably 300 km motorway and that was all, fucking imbeciles and the railways still suck big time. For what do we have the streettaxes? I really can´t understand for what we have strettaxes for such roads, now they started to improve in bulgaria but it´s far from enough, fucking whoresons. they also work way too slow, i can´t think of something that really could make them finally speed up the construction. and i don´t know at all why some idiots who want protect environment protest because of building motorway, they should protest for other things but not a motorway, the cars on a motorway don´t need as much benzin as on landroads where they have to stop for trafficlights etc.

Croatia only had a couple of kilometres to Slovenia, the situation is a bit different here, we don't even know where to start the motorway yet, there are several variants being considered at the moment. Anyway, an urbanist study is in the works.
Besides, there's not that much traffic there outside of the summer months, there are much more critical roads around Slovenia.
ChrisZwolle June 1st, 2007, 10:33 PM Besides, there's not that much traffic there outside of the summer months
Traffic amounts are not the only reason to build a Avtocesta. (right word?) You can pick traffic safety, economic development and freight traffic too. Rijeka might be an important harbor Slovenia (i don't know for sure)?
wyqtor June 2nd, 2007, 12:08 AM Traffic amounts are not the only reason to build a Avtocesta. (right word?) You can pick traffic safety, economic development and freight traffic too. Rijeka might be an important harbor Slovenia (i don't know for sure)?
I guess Rijeka, located in Croatia, wouldn't be such an important port for Slovenia, and it's also outside EU borders at the moment. Koper is the main port as far as I know (probably also Trieste, just across the border in Italy). Still, an Avtocesta would be good for developing the southern parts and connecting with the (Croatian) Adriatic coast. Not to mention the fact that Croatia is way more developed then EU members Romania and Bulgaria, so it will probably join sooner than anyone thinks.
edolen1 June 2nd, 2007, 12:25 AM Right, but the problem is we have a lot of roads where there is a lot of traffic year-round and are only two-laned and those just have the priority at the moment. I do agree however that it should become a motorway soon.
Oh, and Slovenia has its own port, Koper.
ChrisZwolle June 2nd, 2007, 01:18 AM Oh, and Slovenia has its own port, Koper. Okay, i know that, but i didn't know if that port has any importance. Rijeka might have been a transit port for Slovenia and further away. Like Rotterdam or Antwerp is for Germany.
edolen1 June 2nd, 2007, 02:13 AM Nah, Koper is the main port for Slovenia, because of infrastructure and political reasons. It's bigger than the one in Rijeka, AFAIK..
snupix June 2nd, 2007, 09:17 AM Anyway, that motorway should be built ASAP. But what are the priority roads in Slovenia that have to be built, apart from the one to Hungary? Everything else is already built (some small parts missing on the A2). It's more political, i would say...
renco June 2nd, 2007, 11:24 AM Fantastic thread.Generally SLO roads and highways looks amazing.Only if u could speed up a pace ;)
Anyway, that motorway should be built ASAP. But what are the priority roads in Slovenia that have to be built, apart from the one to Hungary? Everything else is already built (some small parts missing on the A2). It's more political, i would say...
It is political display no question about that.:ohno:
keber June 2nd, 2007, 11:32 AM Priorities:
1 - to complete whole "motorway cross" - should be next year
2 - additional motorway program, but main priorities will probably go to linking Maribor to Gruškovje and new/additional expressway on the coast to Istria. and expressway from Celje to Austria.
3 - some new highways on third-A and fourth development axis. Expressway from Austria (at Dravograd or Mežica) to Croatia at Metlika (third development axis) will be built in full length, but not soon. It will be probably one of the most costliest roads in Slovenia.
Current traffic data (http://www.dc.gov.si/fileadmin/dc.gov.si/pageuploads/Stetje_prometa/Stetje_2006.xls) (look line no. 126) does not justify building even a two-laned expressway from Rupa to Italy. Few bypasses and modernising some other sections should suffice for quite a long time. Sorry, but many other roads in Slovenia have higher priorities and more importantly much more traffic. Heck, many roads, which have a lot more traffic than let say Rupa - Kozina main road, won't see expressway nor motorway built anytime in the future. If ever.
Nice graphical view of traffic data for 2005
(http://www.dc.gov.si/fileadmin/dc.gov.si/pageuploads/Stetje_prometa/Promet05.pdf). Now you see, why some connections to Croatia will wait for some time.
snupix June 2nd, 2007, 12:16 PM Well according to that map you can see that MB-ZG should have higher priority than MB-Hungary, if we look at the traffic... So... :(
And I don't understand that nobody's thinking about the future, bc when Croatia joins the EU once, these figures will surely change, especially in freight traffic.
So just to be clear, I respect Slovenia's priorities and wills and it's Slo's right that nobody can change, but nobody can assure me (or 90% of HR) that ignoring road connections to Croatia isn't political...

Your motorways are so quiet! Nice driving on them, i think there are few traffic jams, even on the Ljubljana ringroad?
Your busiest urban motorway is like our rural motorways
However our bordercrossings are quiet too. Mostly freight traffic.
keber June 2nd, 2007, 02:05 PM Well according to that map you can see that MB-ZG should have higher priority than MB-Hungary, if we look at the traffic... So... :(
Yes, but if you look numbers in xls spreadsheet, you'll find, that MB-Hungary has daily 3000 trucks or more. To Gruškovje only 1000. And this is for 2006. Some days MB-Hungary sees more than 5000 trucks daily and this number is increasing very rapidly (in second half of 2004 it rose up to 60%). That's why construction of motorway is speeding up, trucks are the only reason. Few years ago number of trucks was similar to that of Gruškovje / Macelj border crossing and motorway was planned to be completed in 2013. Now they want to complete it 5 years earlier, because situation on main road is becoming critical.
And I don't understand that nobody's thinking about the future, bc when Croatia joins the EU once, these figures will surely change, especially in freight traffic.Sure, that's because A2 is being completed next year, and construction of A4 to MB-Gruškovje will start in next weeks. It's not so black as it seems.
So just to be clear, I respect Slovenia's priorities and wills and it's Slo's right that nobody can change, but nobody can assure me (or 90% of HR) that ignoring road connections to Croatia isn't political...You may want to think so, but I very much doubt, that 5000 daily traffic, including 400 truck justifies building brand new motorway, while some parts of Slovenia have traffic of triple or even quadruple of those numbers and won't have motorway or at least expressway for a foreseeable future.
edolen1 June 2nd, 2007, 05:34 PM This April was the first month that saw 100,000 trucks on the main road through Prekmurje. That's an incredible growth, and even with the huge growth taken into account, it was only expected it would reach such a number by the end of 2007. And this is something the locals have to put up with daily, while the road to Gruškovje is only a real traffic jam two months per year. However the section between Ptuj and Maribor is a different story due to daily commuters, and that section will be completed in 2009.
I know it's nice to think it's all political, but I really see no reason why it would be. The Trieste-Rijeka motorway wouldn't serve the Port of Rijeka much, as the main markets for Koper and Rijeka are Central and Eastern Europe, while any envy because of tourism is just ridicolous, tourism does not represent such an important factor in our economy to justify such stupid behaviour.
I do agree however that in the future it will become an important corridor, especially with the economic development further south in the Balkans, but that will not happen for a few years to come. Oh, and on a side note, when will the motorway from Rijeka down to Senj be built?
Verso June 4th, 2007, 11:26 PM Great pix, keber! I was gonna do the A2 motorway (LJ-ZG) as well, but then my hard disc was destroyed! :bash: :gunz: :wallbash:  :mad2:  :ohno:
Anyway, I'll still take photos of it, but in the other direction. :D
ChrisZwolle June 4th, 2007, 11:31 PM Nice route: Ljubljana - Zagreb - Maribor - Ljubljana. See some motorways in the other direction, and i'm not sure if i seen pics of the Croatian A2 Zagreb - Slovenia yet.
edolen1 June 5th, 2007, 12:21 AM Make sure you go and see the new Puch Bridge, if you do!
rimorski June 5th, 2007, 12:33 AM Nah, Koper is the main port for Slovenia, because of infrastructure and political reasons. It's bigger than the one in Rijeka, AFAIK..hehehehe that isn't true!!!!
port of Rijeka IS bigger, deeper, has more capacity ofcourse....i mean...don't I have to count it for you? Rijeka: ( Mlaka-Baroš-Delta-Brajdica ) -Bakar-Brščica-Raša-Dina-Omišalj-future expansions at Zagrebacka Obala, Brajdica amd LNG terminal probably in Omisalj. Koper will never be able to even physically reach that.
Verso June 5th, 2007, 12:48 AM ^ Koper has more traffic.
rimorski June 5th, 2007, 01:01 AM There is nothin wrong if they compete a little ;) now....
Cos traffic through Port Rijeka is rising every month, that is why port needs to be expanded, amd why new double track railway towards Budapest and Wienna will soon be under construction, money for that has been secured.
Alex Von Königsberg June 5th, 2007, 05:36 AM Could someone tell me why on the picture below Višnja Gora is put above Žužemberk and Krka even though it is closer than the latter two?
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z202/keber1/A2-66.jpg
P.S. Out of curiosity, Višnja Gora translates as Cherry Mountain or Tall Mountain?
snupix June 5th, 2007, 07:56 AM and i'm not sure if i seen pics of the Croatian A2 Zagreb - Slovenia yet.
I think x-type has some plans to change that ;)

Cherry :)
Alex Von Königsberg June 5th, 2007, 08:17 AM [off topic]
In Poland and Czechoslovakia (old habits die hard) I could understand ~80% of written text and only 20% of speech. Never been to former Yugoslavia though, but I am wondering how different Slovenian and Croatian dialects are?
Verso June 5th, 2007, 10:34 AM ^^ If you're having in mind the Slovenian and Croatian LANGUAGES, we understand each other. ;)

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z202/keber1/A2-66.jpgIf you've noticed this on previous photos, such "messy" signs with distances are very common in Slovenia. The thing is that Žužemberk and Krka are in different directions (not here yet, of course) than Višnja Gora (and Ljubljana). I'm not sure if you know where Žužemberk and Krka are, but look at some bigger towns on previous photos, and if they aren't really situated close to the highway we're driving on, they will be listed kinda separately from others, but one by another, that's why also this "mess". You see this often in Germany and elsewhere, "just" that there would be a line drawn between them, so it doesn't look so messy. And possibly also different road numbers written.
ChrisZwolle June 5th, 2007, 12:30 PM Maybe the lower three destination exit earlier than Ljubljana. However, i think that there are too many small towns on the distance signs. The rest of signage is good though.
SouthernEuropean June 5th, 2007, 03:50 PM very interesting and some amazing photos from the photographers,i liked the Slovenian highways...it's so nice and cool to see other parts of Europe from a passenger's seat:cheers:

Distance signs are very messy in Slovenia. :ohno:
Example:
This section:
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z202/keber1/A2-12a.jpg (http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z202/keber1/A2-12a.jpg)
and this section (about 2 km west from previous picture)
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z202/keber1/A2-18.jpg (http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z202/keber1/A2-18.jpg)
is actually the same and was opened same time, built by the same company. They lead to different direction, hovewer you can clearly see the difference on both signs. I don't know the cause for this, but there are no clear standards for signs in Slovenia. Designers do more or less themselves, what they think it should be. Even motorway interchanges are usually labeled only 1000 m before actual interchange, that is only 30 before deciding next destination.
There was somehow famous sign on interchange Gabrk (A1 and A3), where main destination was labeled to go to Koper, Portorož and Škocjan. Škocjan is a village of about 10 people. There were jokes in newspapers, that we have the smallest village on the world to be put on motorway interchange destination sign. Later they removed Škocjan.
Maybe this is connected to typical Slovenian smallness, so we have to do everything to look big and very important.
Verso June 5th, 2007, 06:16 PM ^^ Even fonts are different. And if you haven't noticed, E-road numbers on signs in Slovenia are a complete mess! On Ljubljana-Maribor motorway (E57) you also see E58 and E85. Or E61 where it isn't at all (the southern Ljubljana bypass), or E571 instead of E751. Just check my photos, and you'll see. P.S.: I even noticed "A10" on one of new signs!
SouthernEuropean June 5th, 2007, 08:38 PM guys don't worry these are details, easily fixed, fact is you have nice, clean modern highways, you can change the signs overnight.oh and btw of course stuff like these are in Greece too

Not only the signs, try looking at maps by international cartographers.. I doubt I've ever seen them getting the road numbers right. Some even have the numbers as they were 15+ years ago..
Alex Von Königsberg June 6th, 2007, 03:40 AM I did some editing to show how I would design that sign ;)

kulani June 6th, 2007, 04:05 AM lovely highways, what's the speed limit like.

That would look very nice (apart from road number, which should be in yellow/black combination). But already some clear design standards on all distance signs would suffice. Authorities will need to do something about that.
Verso June 6th, 2007, 01:05 PM Yeah, I like that design very much (except for the color, yes; btw, in Slovenia red-colored road signs depict local roads (this one is regional), but you rarely see it). I'd only put Ivančna Gorica at the bottom, it's close to the A2, but it's also where you go off for Žužemberk and Krka, so I'd more like it to be at the bottom, as those 7 km is the smallest distance of all.
lovely highways, what's the speed limit like. Thanks; the speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h (80 mph), expressways 100 km/h (62 mph), 'ordinary' roads outside built-up areas 90 km/h (55 mph), and inside built-up areas the general speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph).
radi6404 June 6th, 2007, 06:11 PM Hi Verso, you aren´t much arround last time, isn´t it?
edolen1 June 6th, 2007, 08:41 PM Yeah, plus I'd erase Krka from the distance sign, it's just too small of a village to have it. I'd rather add Litija or something. :)
