Beerliker March 13th, 2007, 01:51 AM Not sure if this is the right section to post stuff about Georgia. As there is no Caucasus section I guess eastern Europe is the closest thing. This board could use a Caucasus section. *nudge nudge*
Anyways Georgia's main airport was just finished. What do you think?

hakz2007 September 6th, 2010, 05:47 AM Georgia in search of low-price air travel
The Georgian Government is planning a wave of civil aviation reform to attract low-cost foreign air companies. According to the Ministry of Economy, Georgia needs to sign a comprehensive air services agreement with the European Union. However, before signing the deal, the country should harmonize its “liberal safety standards” with the EU’s tougher regulations.
The EU and Georgia finalized an air services agreement in March of this year. However, the agreement has not yet been signed. The document seeks to integrate Georgia into a wider European Common Aviation Area. Under the agreement, Georgia will have to harmonize its legislation with European standards and implement EU aviation rules in areas such as aviation safety, security, the environment, consumer protection, air traffic management, economic regulation and competition.
The Economy Minister, Vera Kobalia said that the signing of the agreement will increase flights between EU and Georgia. In particular, the government believes that such steps will enable international low-tariff air carriers to enter Georgia. Kobalia used the example of Ryanair, an Irish airline which is “very much interested” in launching flights to Georgia starting from summer 2010.
“This is a company which has created a climate for tourism in every country it has entered,” President Mikheil Saakashvili said on Monday. “Ryanair does not fly to any of the post-soviet countries, nor does it fly to Turkey. But now we are trying to bring it to Georgia.”
Irish Airline Ryanair is well known for its low cost flights within the European Union. The company has 44 bases and low fare routes across 26 countries, connecting 157 destinations. According to the airline’s website, Ryanair currently has a team of more than 8,000 people and expects to carry over 70 million passengers in 2010.
One of the important parts of the government’s plan is to modernize the airport in Kutaisi, the second largest city in Georgia.
Passenger traffic between the EU and Georgia has increased by an average of 10 percent per year over the past five years, whereas cargo traffic in the same period has increased by an annual average of no less than 26 precent in the same time period.
However, there have been complaints about the high price of air travel from Georgia. Consequentially, many would prefer to go to neighboring Turkey or Armenia to get their air tickets at a cheaper price. In some cases the savings can be as much as fifty percent.
For Korneli Kakachia, a professor at Tbilisi State University, the cost of flights from Tbilisi to other parts of the world is pretty expensive. “I go abroad four or five times a year, and almost all the cost is covered by host organizations,” Kakachia told Georgia Today. “If I had to pay for my flights, I am sure I would have to think twice.”
It is expected that government will soon submit legislation to the Parliament in order “to make all the aviation safety norms stricter.”http://www.georgiatoday.ge/article_details.php?id=8248
hakz2007 September 24th, 2010, 02:02 PM Cheaper flights on the horizon
A new trend is emerging in Georgia’s civil aviation market - well-known, high-cost companies are being slowly replaced by smaller low-cost alternatives. While Austrian Airlines has left Georgia after twelve years in the market, Pegasus, a young Turkish company has unveiled plans to enter the country.
Announcing its decision on September 21, Austrian Airlines Georgia said that the last Tbilisi-Vienna flight will take place on October 31. According to Mikheil Braun, Communications Manager of the company, their reason to leave Georgia is “commercial”.
“As our income was not sufficient, we decided to stop flights,” Braun said in televised comments, adding that he hopes flights will resume in the future.
Austrian Airlines has been offering flights from the capital to and from Vienna four times a week. The price for a single ticket ranges between 330 euro and 820 euro.
As of October 30, the German air carrier Lufthansa will take over the route in addition to flights between Tbilisi and London, which are currently offered by BMI (British Midland Airways). In this case too, financial motivations were named as the key factor behind the deal.
Unlike many well-known brands, Pegasus offers significantly cheaper air travel. For instance, a single Tbilisi-Rome or Tbilisi-Berlin ticket costs just 119 euro.
The air carrier, headquartered in Istanbul, promises to perform flights to around 70 European and Asian destinations, including London, Berlin and Dubai.
It is expected that the cheap flights will help to increase visitor numbers and boost the tourism sector.
“The price is always very important when planning a holiday,” Levan Elizbarashvili, a local representative of Pegasus said in televised comments.
When it comes to reliability, the statistics look interesting: according to international media, in 2007, Pegasus carried more passengers in Turkey than any other private airline.
Along with Pegasus, Georgia looks forward to hosting another low-cost air company, this time from Ireland.
This summer, the Georgian Government said that negotiations are underway with Ryanair, well known for its cheap flights within the European Union.
“This is a company which has created a climate for tourism in every country it has entered,” President Mikheil Saakashvili told journalists. “Ryanair does not fly to any post-soviet country [outside of the EU], nor does it fly to Turkey. But now we are trying to bring it to Georgia.”
Currently, there are around 20 national and 14 international airlines operating in Georgia.
However, there is not a wide choice available for air travelers. Over recent years, complaints have been mounting about the high prices of air travel to and from Georgia. For this very reason, many would prefer to go to neighboring Turkey or Armenia to get air tickets at a cheaper price -in some cases savings can be as much as fifty percent.
There is however a positive trend towards cheaper flights. LOT, the state-owned Polish airline has recently entered the Georgian market offering comparatively low prices.
Since mid-September, tickets to and from Warsaw have been available three times a week. The price for a single ticket is 185 euro with a return costing 275 euro. Previously, no direct flights to Poland had existed; a number of companies had operated flights to either Warsaw or Krakow via third countries, a fact which complicated travel between the two countries, and pushing up costs.
According to the Civil Aviation Department, in 2009, over 450,000 passengers departed from Tbilisi International Airport, an increase of 15 percent from the previous year. This year from January 1 through August 31, over 500,000 passengers left Georgia via the same airport.
Apart from Tbilisi International Airport, international flights also take off from Batumi International Airport, in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.http://www.georgiatoday.ge/article_details.php?id=8294
Kokoity October 15th, 2010, 12:19 PM Georgia craves for low-cost carriers
13 October 2010
Fights at Georgian air-market seem to get cheaper starting this fall. Two new air companies - the Lot Polish Airlines and Turkish Pegasus, - both Star Alliance member-companies, entered Georgian market by three- and in some cases, five-fold cheaper prices. Whether or not new market players will manage to break through the stagnated high-price-balance of Georgian market is a matter of time, both old and new market players believe. However, newcomers hope the revolutionary prices they propose, will force old market operators to cut down prices to survive competition. Old operators think the new comers came with unrealistic damping prices and will have to jack prices up in a long-term perspective.
Georgian government takes efforts to attract low-cost air-companies to Georgia so as to increase tourist turnover to and from Georgia and yield bigger economic profit ultimately. But its attempt to secure classical low-cost air-companies are not crowned by success as of yet. Negotiations between Georgian government and the Irish-based Ryanair, Europe’s largest low-cost carrier and the 3rd-largest airline in Europe in terms of passenger numbers and the largest in the world in terms of international passenger numbers, are still underway. According to Georgian media, Ryanair refrains itself to enter Georgian market at the moment for it requires higher passenger turnover and more frequent flights than Georgia can offer. Georgian government does not disclose details of the negotiation under the pretext that it can affect interests of Ryanair and that the low-cost carrier giant will trumpet all details after the negotiations are through. Authorities acknowledge that Ryanair can make a breakthrough at Georgian market enabling tourists to take flights to and from Georgia for quite affordable prices varying tentatively between EUR 10-50 against the currently active prices figuring EUR 350-800 at average on international flights.
Irakli Davitadze, Head of the United Transport Administration of Georgia (UTA), believes that negotiations with Ryanair will be successful all in all but he cannot name even tentative date when the biggest low-cost carrier of Europe is supposed to hit Georgian market. What Davitadze can say for sure is that if Ryanair really enters Georgian market it is supposed to offer the market ten-times lower costs and boost much bigger passenger turnover.
“Two things define big passenger turnover in fact: an interest toward the country and low cost on tickets. Interest toward Georgia is big I can say, and if you offer EUR10-20 [on air-tickets] a big tourist inflow is supposed to come to Georgia,” Davitadze explained to Georgian Journal adding that low-cost segment will develop in Georgia gradually along with Georgian air-market and economic development.
Passenger turnover at Georgian airport still lags much behind million at the moment and is predicted to reach million by 2012. Based on nine months’ data statistics of 2010 Georgian passenger turnover accounted for 614 453 that by 10% and 16% exceeds figures of similar period of 2008 and 2009 respectively. August war and economic crisis affected Georgian passenger turnover in 2008 the most successful year to Georgian aviation market when unprecedented 70% growth in passenger turnover was registered against the 50% growth registered at average in previous years, Aleko Gachechiladze, Head of Passenger and Cargo Transportation Department at UTA, told Georgian Journal.
The growth figure dropped after August war. It recovered and exceeded the 2008 data only in 2010. And irrespective it still lags much behind million, the figure coupled with liberalized air-market attracted two new air-companies to Georgia in this fall.
Polish-based Lot and Turkish Pegasus started operation on September 15 and October 10 respectively. None of them appears classic low-cost carriers but they entered Georgian market by revolutionary prices cutting prices three-fold on European directions and by five-fold on Istanbul flights [that is the most demanded flight in Georgia].
If the benchmark price started from EUR 450 on Tbilisi-Istanbul flight implemented by Turkish Airlines for almost ten years, Pegasus offers EUR 79 on the similar direction. According to Levan Elizbarashvili, Representative of Pegasus in Georgia, the price includes all due air-flight-related costs [including cost-free 20 kg hand-luggage] except food. But company offers a choice to passengers: either order food for EUR 10 during purchasing tickets or buy foods for similar EUR 10 during the flight.
“All in all the flight to Istanbul may cost up to EUR 90, while we guarantee absolute safety of flight and comfortable air-plane just like other expensive air-companies can offer,” Elizbarashvili told Georgian Journal.
Having operated at internal Turkish air-market till 2005 Pegasus decided to enhance its market at international level in 2005 and is already represented at 28 key EU cities. It offers flights from Tbilisi to all EU directions for prices starting from EUR 119. Tbilisi-Rome one-way ticket for example costs EUR 119, Tbilisi-Milan – EUR 120-130, flights to Germany varies between EUR 119-140, to London – EUR 130-140. While Turkish Airline one-way prices on Istanbul flights start from EUR 450 and may reach EUR 700-800 depending when the ticket is booked. Round-trip tickets of Turkish Airline are affordable for EUR 280-700 [economy-class] and business class starts from EUR 900. Lufthansa, that is the most expensive air-company taking the premium segment in Georgia, fixes starting prices on EU directions [via Munich] as EUR 450, and goes as high as EUR 700-800 for economy class. Business class is much higher. American direction costs start from EUR 1000 to Lufthansa and may exceed EUR 2000. Air Baltic that was esteemed the low-cost carrier prior Pegasus and Lot entrance at Georgian market fixes starting prices on EU directions [via Riga] as of EUR 300 per round-trip but it does not include luggage price fixing EUR 20 per kilo. Air Baltic makes available EU flights from Tbilisi for even EUR 50-80 if the ticket is booked by 2-3 months earlier. Meantime Lot makes available round-trip flights to EU for EUR 320 and one-way tickets to US for EUR 575 approximately, tickets can be booked by a week earlier and include all possible flight-related costs including food, Lot Travel agency assures.
“The cheapest costs are fixed by Pegasus and Lot today irrespective that Pegasus does not include food the flight costs are much cheaper ultimately,” Fresh Travel air-ticket agency told Georgian Journal.
Marina Abuladze, Director General of Berika, Official Representation Office of Czech Airlines and Air Baltic in Georgia, thinks prices proposed by new market operators are unrealistic and they will be forced to increase them in a long-term prospect otherwise they cannot work. Georgian Airways, the single Georgian air-company implementing international flights and taking 19% of Georgian market incorporating 18 companies, makes no comment respective to the new price-policy. They suggest waiting and seeing what happens. Georgian Airways implements flights toward EU for EUR 229-333 as a starting price on one-way trips, and plans to offer a sale during winter-time making flights to EU affordable for EUR 100.
Giorgi Lipartiani, Director General of Lot representation in Georgia, believes prices fixed by Lot are quite realistic and not damping, as far as they are in line with Lot price-policy in all directions in the region.
Elizbarashvili also claims Pegasus prices are not damping and pledges to maintain low-cost policy even if prices at the market fall below their current prices in future. Pegasus expects 50% growth in passenger turnover due to low costs that enables the company to go ahead with low prices. Pegasus plans to add flights toward Asia and Africa gradually.
“I think low costs will attract tourists, a German citizen for example could not dream of flying to Georgia for EUR 119, while I believe he/she was interested to visit Georgia but was reluctant to pay EUR 300-400 for a trip and preferred to go to Spain for example for cheaper price. If I can fly for lower costs other companies also can,” Elizbarashvili believes and presumes that its competitors will be forced to cut down prices.
Davitadze absolutely rules out that the price- damping policy is available at Georgian market been liberal and free of monopolists. He agrees that some air-companies have reserves to reduce prices although cannot say for sure whether or not they will cut down costs.
“Market regulates prices, they will be shaped out according to demand,” He said.

Kokoity October 30th, 2010, 05:38 PM TAV Holding in Georgia
Friday, October 29
• Please give us a brief history of TAV Holding and TAV Georgia
TAV’s history began in 1997 with the tender for Istanbul Ataturk Airport international Terminal. After being awarded the tender, Tepe and Akfen Groups established TAV as a joint venture. After the construction of the International Terminal of Istanbul Ataturk Airport was completed, TAV Airports was founded on 9th January 2000. TAV underwent restructuring in 2006 and organized its activities as “operations” and “construction” under TAV Airports Holding (TAV Airports) and TAV Construction. TAV Airports is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2010.
Through the years, 14 companies were founded under the TAV Airports Holding, seven of which are project companies and the remaining seven service companies.
Tbilisi International Airport is TAV Holding’s first project abroad and it has been operated by TAV Georgia since October 2005 and undertaken under the “Build-Operate-Transfer” model. The new passenger terminal constructed by TAV Georgia commenced service in February 2007. TAV Airports Holding has the rights to operate Tbilisi International Airport for 20 years. At the Tbilisi International Airport all operations inside and outside the terminals, ground handling services, duty free and catering services are administered by TAV Georgia.
Operating Tbilisi International Airport since 2005, TAV Airports continued its investment in the region and assumed the operation of the Batumi International Airport in May 2007. With its new runway, taxi route, apron and terminal building, Batumi International Airport is being operated by TAV Batumi Operations LLC, which is the subsidiary of TAV Airports Holding for 20 years.
• How would you describe TAV Georgia’s role in the development of civil aviation?
I think that Civil Aviation in Georgia took a big leap forward in 2007 by opening two new international airports in Tbilisi and Batumi, hailed among the region’s most comfortable and efficient terminals. The opening of new terminals has increased air traffic to Georgia, which is now served by national and foreign airlines.
At the same time, consistent economic policies in Georgia are producing strong economic growth in the country and consequently, TAV Georgia’s goal is to contribute to the further development of Georgia and we intend to be the Caucasus' favorite airport through some of the actions we have been taking, as well as those coming in the future.
Located in the capital of Georgia, which is expected to become a significant bridge between Europe and Asia, TAV Airports Holding intends to use its experience in the aviation sector to accelerate the development of Georgia’s civil aviation sector and contribute to the Georgian economy. Moreover, Tbilisi International Airport has an important and privileged place in fulfilling TAV Airport’s vision of becoming a regional player.
• What have been the most important events on the Georgian air market in the last period?
TAV Georgia is actively taking its part in the development of civil aviation in Georgia, supporting Georgia’s government in its efforts to expand the country’s traveling and tourism opportunities and contributes to Georgia’s civil aviation by attracting many new air carriers to the Georgian market. Hence, as a result of TAV Georgia’s numerous endeavors and efforts along with a number of negotiations held in different countries, the company managed to fuel the interest of air-companies towards the Georgian air market. Recently, air-carriers such as LOT Polish Airlines, one of the oldest air companies with a large fleet and a network of scheduled flights to 50 cities in Europe and beyond started regular flights from Tbilisi. Moreover, recently the low-cost Pegasus Airlines started daily flights to Istanbul. Undoubtedly, these will facilitate the tourism development in Georgia, increase passenger flow and country’s economic growth on the whole.
In this respect, TAV Georgia and United Transport Administration will continue to carry out persistent and continuous joint works in order to ensure favorable conditions for air-carriers, which are pre-conditions for attracting many other air companies. There are many good achievements on the horizon…

Flight frequencies between the two countries will increase from six weekly flights to ten. An additional agreement will be in Tbilisi in few days
Transportation Minister, Yisrael Katz, and Georgian Minister of Economy, Vera Kobalia, agreed last week to increase flight frequencies between the two countries from six weekly flights to ten weekly flights for each side.
Only one airline, a Georgian one, has served the Tbilisi-Tel Aviv route so far, but additional flights are in the works for Israeli airline Arkia. Another Israeli airline might join the route as well.
The ministers have also agreed that each country will allow three airlines to operate the route between Tibilisy, Georgia to Israel instead of only one. An agreement on new bilateral air traffic ties will be signed between the two sides in Tbilisi in few days.
In a press conference held by the Georgian Minister, she noted that “We are seeing growing numbers of tourists heading back and forth in recent months, and the current flight agreements are too limited. Try and book a flight from here to Georgia and you won’t be able to find a seat. I had to wait two weeks until space opened up.”
Israel holds talks on allowing Georgian citizens visa free travel
Cooperation in tourism between Israel and Georgia reaches a new stage.
Georgian government supposes the number of Jewish tourists in Georgia, increased by 100% in 2010, will twice increase the next year. Therefore, renewal of relations between the two countries in this field has become necessary. Cooperation memorandum was signed by Georgian Economy Minister and Israeli Tourism Minister in Tel Aviv on Thursday.
Official Tel Aviv is also holding intensive talks on allowing Georgian citizens visa free travel. The Georgian side open its border for Israeli citizens a year ago.
Representatives of air companies, among them El Al Airlines Tel Aviv`s largest company, also participated in the bilateral meeting in Israeli Tourism Ministry on Thursday. Three air companies of the two countries will be allowed to perform flights from Georgia to Israel and the way around.
As reported, an agreement on air communications will be signed between the two sides in Tbilisi in few days.
Meetings with travel companies were also held today in Tel Aviv. Georgian Economy Minister and Head of Israeli Tourism Department discussed with the companies establishing visa free regime. Representatives of Israeli tourism agencies and journalists also intend to arrive in Georgia this year.
Georgian Economy Minister Vera Kobalia held talks in Israeli Parliament during her 3-day visit. The Georgian delegation even attended a sitting in the Knesset.
The Georgian delegation members also met with Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos III. They talked to representatives of business circles. http://www.port2port.com/Index.asp?CategoryID=44&ArticleID=2641

Kokoity November 22nd, 2010, 11:45 AM Pegasus Served more than 5,000 Passengers in First Month in Georgia
Written by Keti Chkhikvadze
22/11/2010
The FINANCIAL -- Pegasus, the low cost Turkish airline company, has already served more than 5,000 passengers in the month since its launch in Georgia on October 10, 2010. The ticket prices at Pegasus are two-three times lower compared to other airline companies operating in Georgia which means that its planes are always full.
A one-way ticket from Tbilisi to Istanbul varies from 70-100 EUR, for Europe this is between 110-180 EUR, including taxes and charges.
The company has flights leaving Tbilisi every day, including weekends, at 06:30 a.m. and the flight from Istanbul, Turkey is at 23:45 Turkish time.
The latest offer of Pegasus Georgia was to provide a 3 day shopping trip in Istanbul. “We have designed a special tour for avid shoppers. The package which costs only 300 EUR, includes a round trip ticket, 3 days at the 5 star Via Hotel (www.viahotel.com.tr) with breakfast, transport from the hotel to Airport , and insurance,” said Levan Elizbarashvili, CEO of Gasa, General Trade Representative of Pegasus in Georgia.
.
“There were several factors starting from global, governmental as well as passengers’ stream governing the lead up to Pegasus’ launch in Georgia,” said Levan Elizbarashvili.
Pegasus Airlines was established in 1990 as a joint venture between Aer Lingus, Silkar Yatırım and Net Holding in Istanbul. Pegasus operated its first flight in May 1990 and started its journey with just two aircrafts. Currently Pegasus has scheduled and charter flights to more than 100 different destinations in 17 countries.
“Pegasus has daily flights from Tbilisi to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport , which is the second Airport in the city. The flights are performed only from this Airport to 24 different cities. Pegasus is constantly adding new destinations. The company in Turkey plans to purchase 25 airlines in the next 5 years to expand its destinations,” Elizbarashvili declared.
“Shopping in Turkey’s large malls is a great pleasure, especially when the shopping centre is situated right next to the hotel,” Levan Elizbarashvili added.
“The rise in the economy is causing an increase of tourists in the country and is directly affecting the frequency of tourists, businessmen, and customer flow. That is why Pegasus added Tbilisi as its destination in October,” Levan Elizbarashvili said.
“The capital should be considered not just a centre of Georgia but also a centre of the Caucasus, as here there is an accent on the population and passengers of Armenia as well as Azerbaijan, who are considered potential clients of air tickets and air transportation.”
“Pegasus Airlines has been trying to change its profile since 2005 and expand the list of the cities where it charters flights to. Within the framework of this strategy Pegasus entered Tbilisi . This was mainly governed by the reality and challenges which have existed in Georgia since 2004.
The major determining factor when a low cost airline enters a country is a stable flow of passengers who use air transactions and air flights there. The flow of passengers in Georgia has significantly increased since 2004, the dynamics are stable and this is quite important for a company which operates in the Georgian market.”
Moreover, the entrance of low-cost airlines has caused a quick increase of current passenger numbers. What was previously largely inaccessible for many, has now become available. Consequently the conditions and environment in Georgia, from the point of view of doing business, governed the fact that Pegasus started flying from Tbilisi to Istanbul and then from Istanbul on to Europe.
Q. Pegasus is referred to as a low-cost airline. How has Pegasus changed the existing situation in the Georgian market?
A. The launch of Pegasus flights in Georgia coincided with the so called Winter Season in aviation, when the passengers’ rate decreases worldwide and is not as active as in the summer and New Year periods. These factors as well as Pegasus’ entrance in the market caused serious fluctuations. There are airline companies which are discussing the possibility of lowering the prices of their air tickets. However there are also some companies which have already decreased prices. This is a normal fact as in other cases companies would not be able to sustain their positions in the market after a new player enters the game with its own rules and significantly lower prices than them.
There is an ongoing tendency of decreasing prices of air tickets and therefore increasing passenger numbers. The fact that our airplanes are fully booked does not mean that others flights are empty. On the contrary, they are flying at full capacity too. This is due to the fact that low prices increased demand and we are seeing more passengers overall than before.
Q. What news will Pegasus deliver to its passengers in 2010/2011?
A. Our clients should constantly expect updates concerning prices. For the New Year period there is already a discount for tickets. Pegasus Airlines decreased the prices of tickets to its main destinations by 10 EUR at the end of October.
Moreover, we are constantly upgrading the quality of service, which includes the purchasing process of air tickets. Pegasus has opened a service centre at the Courtyard Marriott, where clients will have the opportunity to use the full service package starting from the booking of tickets to their payment.
Q. How much will an individual save if he travels with Pegasus?
A. For a one-way ticket an individual saves approximately 100-150 EUR and to Turkey 70-100 EUR. This is the lowest tariff of Pegasus’ compared to the lowest tariffs of other airline companies. After our lowest tariff, our tariff increases by 10 EUR and at other airline companies the tariff increases by a different amount. Round-trip tickets are 2-3 times less at Pegasus compared to at other companies.
Q. What was the total investment of Pegasus in Georgia?
A. The investments coming out of service specification were not significant. The majority of investment was in the advertising field. Moreover the company recruited 25 employees and plans to increase the number to 35.
Q. Does the company plan to add new destinations in the nearest future?
A. Pegasus has been expanding the chain of its destinations every year since 2005. The year 2010 was quite active during which the company added three new directions including Tbilisi . The company plans to cover the whole of Europe in the nearest future. Moreover, there is a strategy to expand to Asia as well.
Q. What services does Pegasus offer its clients onboard? Are they associated with additional expenses?
A. Pegasus provides the opportunity to passengers to purchase and choose the menu they would like. The maximum price of a meal is 10 EUR and what distinguishes us from other companies is that we give the opportunity to clients to define their meal.
Moreover, as opposed to other low cost airline companies, the ticket price actually includes a 20 kilo luggage allowance and 8 kilo hand luggage allowance. This is great privilege for the client as for additional luggage there is a requirement to pay 15-20 EUR or 3 EUR per kilo.
Q. Where are the majority of bookings at Pegasus made - from online reservations, travel agencies or directly from your service centre?
A. Pegasus offers several ways of purchasing tickets. The first is by telephone, when an individual phones to make a reservation and gets a special code, then visits TBC Bank or TBC Pay terminal to complete the transaction. The second is sale from our service centre in the Courtyard Marriott or directly from the Airport ’s office. The third way is online.
Pegasus cooperates with approximately 100 partner travel agencies throughout Georgia. Anyone can purchase tickets in different cities including Batumi, Kutaisi, Gori and Telavi. We have set neither restrictions nor deposits, and guaranteed advances to travel agencies. Thus we provide them with the opportunity to trade freely.
Q. Pegasus is periodically checked by German Company TUV Rheinland, which provides safety testing and certification (ISO 9001:2000). Which type of airplanes does Pegasus perform flights with and how do they differ from international airline’s planes, whose flights are more expensive?
A. First of all the price of its tickets makes Pegasus different from other airline companies. However by its quality, age, usage and condition it is even better than Georgian airlines present on the market. We are not at all different to the popular airline companies that are most associated with safety and quality. Moreover, some of our airplanes might be even better. In terms of this we take in to account the age, preservation, quality and look of the airplane.
In Georgia, Pegasus passengers are served by a Boeing 737-800 type liner, which is new, only 3 years old. The airplane is absolutely safe as at Pegasus passenger safety is vital. The plane has 189 seats.
Q. Low cost airlines are quite popular in Europe, including Pegasus in Turkey with 20 years of history. However, in Georgia the only low-cost airline company to have ever entered the Georgian market was “Germania” which soon withdrew. What is the difference between Pegasus and other global airline companies?
A. The major difference between other global airline companies is definitely the history of Pegasus. The company performed chartered flights 20 years ago, after which it was rebranded and mainly focused on inter country flights. Later the company went through a rebranding process and started international flights. The company has huge experience which it uses for its further development.
Q. How full does an airline company have to be not to have to withdraw from a market?
A. An airline company should have minimum 60% loading per flight, which is the super minimum.
Q. In your opinion, what makes airline ticket prices so high in Georgia?
A. Firstly the Airport charges make ticket prices higher. Our Airport is in good condition, and passengers even have the chance to arrive in capitals’ second Airport s. Secondly, it is the distance that makes the prices higher. Istanbul is in Europe so the distance to Europe from there is less than directly from Tbilisi .
Q. In your opinion how developed is the tourism business in Georgia?
A. The tourism business is quite well developed in Georgia. There is high competition in the sector and almost everyone is involved in this business. As for the local market, it is more or less developed. It unprecedentedly developed within 4-5 years. The number of tourists increased significantly as well as sightseeing. In the tourism market, the most important thing for a tourist is what he eats and what he sees. When we speak of developing infrastructure, nutrition units should be developed, Georgian cuisine is quite delicious and memorable. However I believe there are perspectives that need to be developed further in this regard.

Kokoity November 25th, 2010, 12:39 PM Agreement concerning flights was signed between the Governments of Great Britain and Georgia
An agreement about “Air Services between the Governments Georgia and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the Northern Ireland” was signed at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
The document was signed by Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Vera Kobalia from the Georgian side and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the Northern Ireland in Georgia, Judith Goff.
By signing the document regulations on the number of aircraft, number of flights and destinations has been abolished. Moreover, the document allows the airlines to determine the tariffs for their service themselves.
The agreement is special because it provides the possibility of Cabotage - the transportation of goods or passengers between two points in the same country.
Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development also noted that competition between airlines will increase the level of service, decrease the prices of tickets and all this will have a positive impact not only on the increase of passengers but the growth dynamics of incoming tourists.

hakz2007 December 8th, 2010, 05:54 PM More flights between Georgia and Poland
Starting from December, LOT, the Polish Airline will introduce an extra weekly flight between Warsaw and Tbilisi bringing the total number of flights between the cities to four per week.
“There was a gap between the Thursday and Sunday flights and we decided to add a Tuesday flight,” Giorgi Lipartiani, Director of General Sales Agent, an official representative of LOT Polish Airlines in Georgia, told Georgia Today. “Now is a low season for air companies worldwide, but we still made this decision.”
LOT performed its first flight on September 15 this year becoming the third Eastern European company after Czech Airlines of the Czech Republic and Air Baltic of Latvia to offer direct flights to Tbilisi. The company’s main clients are European businessmen and tourists traveling to Georgia.
“Approximately 80 or 90 percent of our sales come from Europe,” Lipartiani says. “Despite the fact it can save our consumer’s time, online sales are still rather low - only seven to nine percent [of total sales],” he explained.
The flight time between Georgia and Poland is around 3 hours and 40 minutes and includes dinner and top quality service. The price, including commission, for a ticket is 185 euro one-way and 275 euro for a return.
The prices, Liparteliani explains, are competitive for trips to and from all European destinations. For instance, the price for a ticket from Dьsseldorf (Germany) to Tbilisi via Warsaw costs 170 euro one-way, with a return available for just 290 euro. Such prices, he continues, provide great value for Georgians, not to mention European businessmen and tourists.
According to Lipartiani, the company has no current plans to expand its services to any other Georgian Airports. However, Lipartiani believes that if the company performs well over the next year, it will begin thinking about starting additional flights from other airports in the following summer.
Based in Warsaw, LOT has been a member of The Star Alliance Group since 2003. The company was established in 1929, making it one of the world’s oldest airlines still in operation. Around 68 percent of the company is owned by the Polish government.
LOT operates scheduled services on both domestic and international routes. The company performs flights to 57 different destinations in Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia. It also carries out flights to Armenia. In 2010, the company won numerous awards including “Best Airline in Eastern Europe.”
Back in September, Vera Kobalia, the Minister of Economy hailed the newcomer, noting that such decisions are vital for the development of tourism and business ties between Europe and Georgia. http://georgiatoday.ge/article_details.php?id=8506

Sibir (Russia) and AirZena (Georgia) air companies have been authorized to continue charter flights.
According to Georgian media, Sibir (Russia) and AirZena (Georgia) air companies have been authorized to continue charter flights until the end of March, Rosbalt reports.
Both companies organize so-called parity flights, i.e. each will make four flights per week.
It will be remembered that direct air communication between Russia and Georgia stopped in August 2008 following the start of hostilities launched by Georgia in South Ossetia. Only Georgian Airways carried out charter flights between Tbilisi and Moscow as was authorized by the RF Transport Ministry after the conflict.
Sibir was the first Russian air company that applied to the United Transport Administration of Georgia proposing charter flights between two countries and obtaining permission.

A: Polish Airways was founded 80 years ago, it is one of the biggest air carriers in Europe and a member of the Star Alliance group. We offer our customers the highest quality service, and of course we pay a great deal of attention to the safety of our passengers. Q: From December 21 you began operating an additional flight to Warsaw each week. Has it become a success?
A: Yes definitely. We added one more weekly flight to Warsaw, bringing the total number of flights to four per week. You can now make the journey from Tbilisi to Warsaw on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, with flights leaving in the other direction one day earlier. We’ve seen a lot of interest in this route so yes, it’s certainly been successful.

Georgia may sell the airport in Kutaisi, the former Soviet republic’s second-largest city, for $1 as it tries to attract foreign investment and boost tourism.
“We’re in talks on the airport with possible investors from Germany, India and elsewhere,” Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Vera Kobalia said by telephone from the capital Tbilisi today. “One dollar is a symbolic price. We expect $20 million to be invested in the facility.”
The government is considering all options for Kutaisi airport, including selling or turning it over to an operating company, Ketevan Aleksidze, director of Georgian United Airports, said by telephone. The plan may involve attracting low-cost airlines from Europe to Kutaisi.

Kokoity December 9th, 2011, 11:14 AM Estonian Airlines introduces Tbilisi flights
Estonia’s national carrier, Estonian Air, will offer four weekly flights to Tbilisi beginning in the spring of 2012. Aiming to develop Tallinn into a regional hub, Estonian Air officials have decided to add new routes to Finland and one to Georgia.
“Estonian Air is aiming to attract different types of travelers, paying more attention to increase the share of transfer passengers,” said Tero Taskila, the CEO of Estonian Air on December 2.
The Estonian market is limited, so the air company felt the need to expand its market size. The airline, which is based in Tallin, is a regional airline feeding into the Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) network. Officials from Estonian Air hope the decision will encourage more passengers to use the Estonian Air network and Tallinn Airport as a transfer.
Estonian Air offers direct flights from Tallinn to throughout Europe including Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris and Oslo.
“Estonian Air is now the only international and full-service carrier operating from those places that provides wide connectivity to Europe, Scandinavia and CIS countries (Commonwealth of Independent States),” Taskila said.
