Excellent stuff, what a total blast the world cup has been.

Just like that, this massive spectacle comes to a conclusion, and South Africa has succeeded beyond (most peoples) wildest expectations.
The fact that we can now say 'I told you so' and all that stuff is almost irrelevant, so far has the country and its image progressed during the world cup.

The lasting and overriding impression and memory of this world cup is actually of the FANS - and what a time they had. The biggest and best party I can remember, and I am sure most people who were there would agree.

Congratulations South Africa on ushering in your new era of success. Thank you for the memories, thank you for showing us that impossible is indeed nothing.

Johannesburg - The 2010/11 Premier Soccer League fixtures have been announced, with the first match scheduled for Friday 27 August when Ajax Cape Town entertain Bloemfontein Celtic at the Cape Town Stadium.

Speculation had suggested that the brand new stadium in the Mother City, which hosted World Cup matches in June and July, would be used for PSL encounters and now confirmation has come through that it will.

Defending champions SuperSport United face a tricky opener against Nedbank Cup champions Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday 28 August. Gavin Hunt's charges will be looking to claim an unprecedented fourth successive title.

Kaizer Chiefs clash with Golden Arrows on the same day at the Rand Stadium, while Mamelodi Sundowns are also in action on the Saturday at home against Moroka Swallows.

Vasco Da Gama kick off their adventure in the top flight against Soweto giants Orlando Pirates at home on the Sunday of the opening weekend, while their is a Kwa-Zulu Natal derby in the shape of AmaZulu against Maritzburg United on the same day.

The first Soweto Derby of the season takes place on November 13 when Amakhosi travel to the Bucs' Orlando Stadium.

New CT Stadium logo unveiled
2010-07-21 12:30

Cape Town - Morne du Plessis, chairperson of SAIL STADEFRANCE, the operators of the Cape Town Stadium and the Green Point Park Precinct, has unveiled the new Cape Town Stadium logo.

"Our challenge was to create a logo that fulfilled certain requirements.

"The logo had to be one that didn’t suggest the venue is merely a stadium for sporting events but also one that caters for all kinds of gatherings, including music concerts and gospel shows.

"Its design had to be modern yet timeless so that it would not date. To achieve this, the logo had to be a strong symbol – instantly synonymous with the stadium and a reflection of Cape Town.

"The logo also had to complement the subsidiary logos of the stadium’s extensions such as Green Point Park and other facilities that are to follow.

"We looked at the features around the stadium – the mountain, the sea, the lush flora and others, but we realised that the most defining feature of the stadium wasn’t what was around it, but the actual shape of the structure itself.

This allowed us to develop a strong timeless symbol that’s both modern and unique. The design works on its own and with the subsidiary logos of the existing stadium facility extensions and those still to be developed.

Green was the chosen colour as it is rich and fruitful and is reminiscent of our beautiful city’s landscape and the stadium’s lush playing field. It also pays homage to the location of the stadium - Green Point.

PSL DOUBLE-HEADER PLANNED FOR CAPE TOWN STADIUM

http://cdn.playfair.co.za/kickoff/26ea9e5b35298439b359fff27b5cdfc6_40x40.jpg August 27 will see a massive party in Green Point as Cape Town Stadium hosts four PSL teams in one night of football action.

Morne du Plessis, the chairperson of SAIL STADEFRANCE, the operators of the Cape Town Stadium, announced today that a ‘party’ would feature the Cape Town kick off of the Absa Premiership season with a double-header.

KickOff.com can confirm the matches on show will be Ajax Cape Town against Bloemfontein Celtic and Vasco da Gama against Orlando Pirates.

Du Plessis says they are in the middle of discussions with the three Cape Town top-flight clubs about the continued use of the stadium.

“We are right in the middle of these talks. I can’t say how far we are, but the clubs all believe they must have a consistent home venue,” he says.

“The question is which team will play at Cape Town Stadium and how to manage the costs because each club has fifteen home matches and not all of them are big games that naturally attract large crowds. That’s the tricky part.”

KickOff.com understands that the cost of hiring the venue for match-day is well over the R200 000 mark, which is a considerable amount more than hiring Athlone or Newlands Stadium.

But the flipside is that by playing in Green Point, the clubs have a great opportunity to attract new spectators, feed off the enthusiasm created by the World Cup and grow their brands.

Besides the PSL double-header bonanza, other Cape Town events in the pipeline include amongst others a Bafana Bafana match.

“We are engaging talks with Safa about a Fifa specified date in November, which gives us the chance to host Bafana Bafana,” Du Plessis says.

A football charity match is penciled in for December while on the rugby front, a pre-season warm-up between Guinness Premiership club Saracens and the Stormers, as well as plans to host a Tri-Nations match next year and Varsity Cup matches, are on the cards.

Du Plessis confirmed the final attendance figures for Cape Town Stadium during the Soccer World Cup.

A total of 1 822 873 fans were counted:

*Stadium - 507 332
*Fanfest - 558 159
*Fanjols - 175 469
*Fanwalk - 581 913

A total of R13 089 940 was spent on food and beverages by fans inside the stadium, which amounts to R25.79 per person on average. Neil Greig

CT Stadium beats budget http://www.sport24.co.za/images/sport24_logo.png
(http://www.sport24.co.za/Soccer/WorldCup/TournamentNews/CT-Stadium-beats-budget-20100721)
The Cape Town Stadium cost about 25% less than its council-approved operating budget over the last 18 months, its operator said on Wednesday.

"I'm not sure how many other FIFA World Cup operations are going to come in under budget, so I think it is important for the people of Cape Town to understand that their money has been fruitfully spent," SAIL STADEFRANCE chairperson Morne du Plessis told a press briefing.

"We operated against a council-approved budget and again that was not money paid to the operator, it was a budget to operate the stadium."

A total of 507 332 spectators used the stadium during the World Cup.

The city's stadium, the Fanfest, Fanjols and the Fanwalk saw a total attendance of 1 822 873 people.

Du Plessis said the stadium would never see 65 000 people inside it again as about 13 000 seats were being removed.

"The ROD (record of decision), which governs the use of the stadium will only allow, which the environment impact studies suggest, 55 000 maximum," said Du Plessis.

The stadium had recently been handed back to SAIL STADEFRANCE, on behalf of the City, from FIFA.

Du Plessis said the stadium operator needed an undertaking from the city of Cape Town, as well as from the public, to sustain the venue.

"We need the City's commitment to the stadium. It can't be the operator's problem alone. It's a communal challenge."

The stadium was a significant part of Cape Town's pride.

"People actually fell in love with the city again and fell in love with the stadium."

A strategy for its future use involved sporting events and entertainment. A stadium party is being organised for the end of August, when the Premier Soccer League kicks off with a game in the city.

"The details of the celebration are still being finalised but will include celebratory pre- and post match music and fun, as well as soccer of the highest calibre."

The fan walk would be "activated" and there would be transport to and from the stadium.

The stadium operators were in intense discussions with the PSL, he said.

"There's a hunger for football."

As far as rugby was concerned, Du Plessis said there had been no approvals. The decisions were in the hands of the Western Cape Rugby Union and the South African Rugby Union, he said.

The stadium was looking to host a rugby festival, the Varsity Cup and, in the next few years, the Tri-Nations and the IRB Sevens.

The stadium would host a new year's eve event and a number of concerts were on the cards.

The anticipated events calendar for 2011 had seven full capacity events of 40 000 to 55 000 people, eight large events of 20 000 to 40 000 people, and five medium events of less than 20 000 people.

The stadium would also re-open its visitors centre in August and the Green Point Park would open in October.

As for the Sevens, that's a big capacity increase from George, but would be a great atmosphere if they can fill it...

A question, once they lower the capacity of the stadium... If SA hosts another event (Rugby f.ex) they can reach the cap. to 69/70 again...?

Andrew_za
July 28th, 2010, 09:51 PM
The temporary seats have already been removed. Capacity will be fixed at 55 000. They will build officers/suites, etc in that space, so unless they demolish it for the event, no.

Mo Rush

It all depends on the ROD modification. So yes, its possible.

miguelon
July 29th, 2010, 12:37 AM
maybe can be fixed back to 70K, but i think that 55,000 is enough capacity for almost any event (more than half of the WC venues were below that capacity

Cape Town Stadium was expected to be packed for Friday evening’s double-header.

Local newcomers Vasco da Gama take on Orlando Pirates in the first game at 18:00, while Ajax Cape Town face Bloemfontein Celtic at 20:45.

Nearly 42,000 tickets have been sold for the two Absa Premiership games.

Organisers, police and emergency services gave the go-ahead for an additional 5,000 tickets to be made available on match day.

SAIL/Stade de France spokesperson Morné du Plessis said, “They went on sale and in the first ten minutes a few hundred were sold. We are pretty sure that [the remaining seats] will be taken up and give us a crowd of around 45,000 tonight.”

Cape Town Fan Walk lives on (http://www.andrewboraine.com/2010/08/cape-town-fan-walk-lives-on/)

http://www.andrewboraine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IMG_1336-Copy.jpg It wasn’t as big as the World Cup Fan Walk. Or as glamorous. But last night’s PSL double header at the Cape Town Stadium showed that the Cape Town Fan Walk is here to stay.
The Fan Walk is turning out to be much more than a mobility corridor to get people to an event at the stadium. It is a new way of using public space, of discovering the central city, of promoting public transport. It is a new way for Capetonians from disparate communities to come together. It is a way for families to enjoy safe public space, at night. It is a way for traders and retailers to make money. And for local entertainers to make a living.

Cape Town Stadium is Overall Winner of Steel Awards 2010

In a year in which some of the most outstanding entries since the inception of the Steel Awards were received, prompting Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) executive director Dr Hennie de Clercq to say “perhaps the best ever”, Cape Town Stadium has been named the overall winner of Steel Awards 2010.

The SAISC hosted the Steel Awards, held concurrently in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town on the 15th September 2010. The Aveng Group was the main sponsor.

The judges said that the Cape Town Stadium was a magnificent structure with some of the best steelwork they have ever seen. “The execution of the steelwork, some of it fabricated locally and some of it imported, is testimony to the genius of the project team, which comprised engineers, fabricators and contractors from all round the globe in a collaboration of which they and the whole country can be proud.”

They added that this project has been an eye-opener to the excellence that can be achieved in the industry with lasting benefits for local industry generally. “The transfer of knowledge and skills will play a significant role in future projects,” they said. “In particular, the use of lighter steel structures - slender members and cable structures - will increasingly manifest itself in our industry.

The other winners & commendations of categories were:

Architectural category winner: Freedom Park Museum, Pretoria
Mining & industrial category winner: SACD Container Depot, Cape Town
Light steel frame building category winner: Zambesi Mall Extensions,

BACK TO AFRICA
USA will play in Mandela Cup

CHICAGO — The U.S. Men’s National Team will travel to South Africa to take on 2010 FIFA World Cup hosts South Africa on Nov. 17 at the magnificent Green Point Stadium in Cape Town as part of the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup.

The U.S. will be returning to South Africa for the first time since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where they finished in first place in Group C ahead of England, Slovenia and Algeria before going out in the Round of 16.

“We are honored to once again be invited to participate in the Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup,” said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley. “The experiences in South Africa the past three years were a critical component of our team preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and we will use this opportunity as part of the process of building for the next four year cycle. We are excited to have the chance to see so many of the great friends we made during our visits there.”

The teams have met twice in their history, the United States collecting victories in both encounters. The USA will be competing in its second Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup, the first appearance coming three years ago to the day. In the team’s inaugural visit to South Africa, Steve Cherundolo scored the game’s only goal and Jozy Altidore made his full team debut in the 1-0 victory. In their only other meeting, the U.S. beat South Africa 4-0 on June 3, 2000,in Washington, D.C. Cobi Jones tallied twice that day, with Earnie Stewart and Claudio Reyna rounding out the scoring as Kasey Keller earned the shutout.

Combined with the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup - in which the United States reached its first final of a major FIFA competition after defeating No-1 ranked and current FIFA World Cup Champion Spain in the semifinal - the U.S. will play its 11th game on South African soil in three years.

Located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Green Point Stadium hosted eight matches during the World Cup, including Germany’s 4-0 rout of Argentina in the quarterfinals and Netherland’s 3-2 thriller against Uruguay in the semifinals. The venue also served as the site of England’s 0-0 draw with Algeria in the second group match, setting the stage for the dramatic results on June 23 that saw the U.S. through to the knockout phase.

The U.S. Men’s National Team has a pair of friendlies slated for October, beginning with a match against Poland on Oct. 9 in Chicago. Kickoff at Soldier Field is set for 7 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel and Galavision. Three days later, the team will host South American rivals Colombia on Oct. 12 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Kickoff for the USA’s first match on the Chester waterfront is set for 8 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and Galavision.

So cap is 56k? :D

Yes. If "suite construction" ever begins we can move it to "under construction" or when retail elements are added to the podium when the "zoning" issue is dealt with.

At the moment they can't even add a restaurant to the stadium or a sports shop or gym!

www.sercan.de
September 21st, 2010, 11:46 AM
Ever begins? So its not clear? BTW there will be 234 suites?!?

Mo Rush
September 21st, 2010, 11:56 AM
Well

1. The operator will have to pay for the construction in the "open gap" and for any retail elements added to the podium. With the lease only starting towards end 2010, this will cost them money, and if they cannot attract enough events, they might not find it realistic to spend money on construction

2. The actual use of the space allows for the total suites to be 234 but without a tenant they may consider other ways to generate revenues from the space.

3. The "zoning" issue will hopefully be sorted out before 2011.

^^ I hope the operator (Consortium Stade de France) will make loooooots of profits with this stadium in order to fund a 5-star renovation at the Stade de France before Euro 2016  :D

Basically, they decided against signing a 30 year lease to operate the venue.

Their current lease ends on 1 November 2010, but they will continue to operate the venue until 31 December 2010. The City of Cape Town will then take over the venue as of 1 January 2011.

All events scheduled for the upcoming months will still take place. This includes the South Africa vs USA game on the 17th of November.

Cape Town featured on Wallpaper* cover

Popular design magazine boasts picture perfect view of Cape Town Stadium

Wallpaper* magazine, a popular UK-based publication and one of the foremost design publications in the world, has selected Cape Town to represent South Africa on the cover of the November 2010 issue – another positive outcome of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

The November edition of Wallpaper* magazine spotlights ten countries – Australia, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Switzerland, USA and South Africa – and highlights the ‘Top Twenty’ reasons why each of these destinations are design hubs. The edition also features a series of ten covers, one for each of the countries chosen.

The South Africa cover boasts a picture perfect view of the Cape Town Stadium, and features the Designing South Africa project, alongside the best SA has to offer in design and architecture. Designing South Africa has spent the past year detailing everything built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and examining the benefits of the games for both South Africa, and the entire global design community. South Africa’s cover model is wearing fashion by Cape Town menswear designer, Stiaan Louw.

To many, Cape Town is seen as the hub of creativity in South Africa, with many major design events taking place in the city each year, including the Design Indaba and the Loeries Advertising Awards. Cape Town’s next major creative contribution will be in the form of a bid to be named World Design Capital 2014. This bi-annual honour is awarded to cities that are dedicated to using design for social, economic and cultural development; and the winning city is given global prominence during a year-long programme of design-led events.

‘Live Design. Transform Life’

Cape Town Partnership has been mandated by the City of Cape Town to coordinate Cape Town’s bid, with Cape Town Tourism and many public, private and media enterprises already showing their support of the initiative. The bid process will be used to showcase City-wide design and design-led events, to school the public on the impact design can have on a city’s economic and social development, and to express how critical design education is in the creation of future strategic-thinkers and innovators.

Mariette du-Toit Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, says, “World Design Capital 2014 is an excellent platform for us to showcase what Cape Town has to offer. The theme - ‘Live Design. Transform Life’ – is fitting for the nature of the Awards as well as for our city, which, like many South African cities, was built to divide and is now in the process of reinvention and integration. Cape Town’s bid to be World Design Capital 2014 gives us an opportunity to show the world that we have made tremendous progress on multiple levels, and that we are using design to shape our city into one of the top 10 cities in the world to live, visit, study, work and invest. Cape Town’s presence on the cover of the latest issue of Wallpaper* proves that we are a global contender.”

Cape Town wins IOC Sport and Environment award
Wednesday, 11 May 2011
The award winners at the recent IOC Sport and Environment Awards in Doha

2010 FIFA World Cup host city Cape Town has won the African section of the International Olympic Committee's Sport and Environment awards for its 2010 Green Goal Programme, at the recent World Conference on Sport and the Environment in Doha.

The IOC Sport and Environment Award is presented every two years to members of the Olympic Movement for their contributions in the field of sustainable sport and the environment. The Host City Cape Town Green Goal programme was nominated by FIFA in its capacity as a sporting federation affiliated with the IOC and was supported by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Commission (SASCOC).

The Green Goal team ensured that the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town was an environmentally responsible event that was measured against international good practice and found to be "outstanding".

IOC President Jacques Rogge, who gave an opening speech at the Conference, applauded the winners for their dedication to the environment "Sport is a powerful tool for positive change," President Rogge said. "Our task is to ensure we use that tool for the benefit of the planet we share. We owe that to ourselves and to the future generations who will inherit this earth. The winners here tonight have embraced this concept and are worthy recipients of the IOC Sport and Environment Award."

Suites will be built when viable.

Stadium is now 56000.
For WC , it was allowed greater capacity ( for then only ) so they built it to have the greater capacity first ( with temp seating in that area ) and then made to reduce by agreement before construction due to EIA ( environmental impact assessment + the local nighbourhoods concerns over noise etc )
SUITES WILL BE BUILT - when the stadium is fully viable as home ground to rugby, or regularly used for football by local teams in our national league.

It looks strange because the stand starts to go up and then suddenly it´s not there anymore. But like you said it´s a temperarely thing and it doesn´t bother viewing the game or something.

I also like soccer city, the structure is huge, very impressive and the surroundings look great too.

Yes, and as you can see, with music concerts. The fan walk gets activated for events too.
The stadium also gets used for private functions like birthdays, fashion shows, film shoots, weddings, competitions and other corporate events. Recently, it was used for during the World Economic Forum- Multi Purpose ;)

The stadium also has an urban park (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=854056&page=3).

Probably my favourite stadium from the 2010 World Cup, it fits it's surroundings very well and there's something about the external cladding that I like but can't determine why.

I'd also be interested in how well the stadium has been used since the World Cup. Multi-purpose stadia are crucial these days but I can't help but feel in terms of football it would never be used to it's potential.

Cape Town stadium to rock and roar

http://www.capetownbikefestival.com/backend/media/622201180852AM/webdisplayStadiumTest1.jpg

This is what Cape Town stadium will look like for three days in December - with a full-size "rock festival" stage to the left.
It's a big reach, and most people's initial reaction is “They'll never pull it off!” - but the enthusiasm with which city and provincial authorities, and commercial stakeholders, have embraced the idea of a three-day bike festival in the Cape Town stadium shows how keen they are to get some mileage out of the city's palest pachyderm.

The plan, hatched by former politician Roelf Meyer and retired lawyer De Wet du Plessis, calls for the stadium's carefully-tended pitch to be removed and replaced by thousands of tons of dirt, to create an AMA-style Supercross circuit, with a full-size “rock festival” stage at one end of the field.

Du Plessis said at the official launch of the on first Cape Town Bike Festival on Wednesday evening: “I really didn't think it would take off the way it has - and this was not how I planned my retirement - but so far not one person has said 'No', so I've kept on going.”

Meyer, the chairman of the festival, said: “I think it's a legacy event from the World Cup 2010. It's got everything - it's a leisure event, it's a sport event, it's a family event.”

Laurine Platsky, deputy director-general in the office of the Premier of the Western Cape, said the province was keen to use the stadium for new and exciting ventures, as was Grant Pascoe, Mayco member for marketing and tourism.

The dates are set (the festival will run from December 16-18) and plans are underway to bring major international acts, both musical and mechanical, to South Africa to headline the programme.

It'll be a day-night game, with supercross racing in the afternoon, the finals of the Miss Biker SA pageant at sunset, and stunt shows, top DJ's and big-name rock bands (we heard the words “Zee Zee Top” whispered at the launch but that's unofficial) deep into the night.

Legendary South African stunt rider and Supermoto champion Brian Capper will perform, as will top international freestyle motorcross team “Masters of Dirt”, whose Hollywood-style show includes Pyrotechnics, music, fire shows, drummers - and quads!

There will be a lifestyle expo with everything from fashion apparel to tattoo artists to biker lifestyle merchandise, go-fast goodies and accessories for any bike you can think of - and a custom build-off where South Africa top bike builders will show just what they can do when there's a big prize at stake.

And we mean big: the winner - and his bike - will be flown to the 2012 Sturgis Rally in South Dakota, to compete against the best in the world.

Ticket sales for the Cape Town Bike Festival will start on Computicket in July and three-day package tickets are already available on the Cape Town Bike Festival website www.capetownbikefestival.com.

Entries for Miss Biker SA are also open, so if you're between 18 and 30, drop-dead gorgeous, wild at heart and can ride a bike, find out more at the festival website.

Ajax Cape Town have secured the Mother Citys iconic World Cup venue in Green Point as their home ground for the season.

Ajax Cape Town have secured the Mother City’s iconic World Cup venue in Green Point as their home ground for the season.
The Cape PSL club announced today that they had signed a three-year agreement with the City of Cape Town for the use of Cape Town Stadium.

“Cape Town Stadium is a public asset and managing it requires the demand for its usage by local organisations,” said Ajax chief executive George Comitis. “We have plans to make sure that our partnership with the city works to the benefit of all Capetonians.”

They had been nomads but now they had a world class stadium.
Comitis said the deal, which will be reviewed year by year, had been structured around five different categories – crowds of 7 000, 10 000, 15 000, 22 500 and 40 000 – and the cost calculated accordingly.
Grant Pascoe, the city’s mayoral committee member for events, marketing and tourism, said:
“The deal will be beneficial to the ratepayers of the city and we hope that Ajax will be able to now use the facility to win the PSL title.” – Cape Argus

Rugby may be coming to CT Stadium
Alicia Pillay | 2 Hour(s) Ago

City councillor Grant Pascoe on Wednesday said that rugby at Cape Town Stadium may become a reality in the near future.
Pascoe confirmed the city is in talks with Western Province Rugby Union about bringing the game to the World Cup venue.
On Tuesday Ajax Cape Town signed a three-year deal with the city to secure the use of the stadium for soccer.

Pascoe said they are keen to make rugby part of the mix as well.
“We will assess it year-on-year and then I think going forward we are also looking at some other codes to also come in as well, so that’s going to benefit us tremendously. It will up the usage patterns and it will also bring us a variety of codes,” he said.

Good to see that this great venue gets to be used on a regular basis.

Now the legacy of the World Cup is complete. A nice world class stadium, with a regular tenant.

A little of topic, but I want to know if there has been an increase of tourism is South Africa after the World Cup, my brother was there for the Cup and had a great time.

miguelon, as with most long haul destinations South Africa's overseas tourists numbers are down. Several hotels have closed and a few planned developments have been put on hold. Hopefully things will pick up when the world's economy does. We're moving into summer now, which means a seasonal boost in tourism arrival figures. Air France has just started a 3 x weekly flight to Cape Town.

IAKS, IOC AND IPC AWARD INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE PRIZES FOR SPORTS FACILITIES
30-10-2011

FACILITIES - SPORT - RECREATION - STADIA - AQUATICS - AWARDS - CONVENTIONS
The International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have announced this year's winners of their international architectural awards for sports and leisure facilities. The prize-giving ceremony took place during the 22nd IAKS Congress in conjunction with FSB (the International Trade Fair for Amenity Areas, Sports and Pool Facilities) on 26th October 2011 in Cologne, Germany.

A jury with international personalities honoured five projects with IOC/IAKS Gold Medals, nine with Silver, five with Bronze and argued for three Special Prizes. Seven participants were awarded with an IPC/IAKS Distinction. The winning entries come from 14 countries worldwide.

The prizes were handed out by IAKS Vice President Horst Huber, IPC President Sir Philip Craven and IOC Member Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu.

This year's country with the biggest number of winning projects is South Africa with one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze Medal as well as one Special Prize.
The most successful sports facility is the Richmond Olympic Oval in Vancouver: The Oval won the IOC/IAKS Gold Medal as well as the IPC/IAKS Distinction for Accessibility.
The IOC/IAKS Award is the only international architecture competition for sports and leisure facilities. This year 135 teams of operators and designers from 38 countries took part in the IOC/IAKS Award. In the 24 year old history this competition for sports facilities has never
previously seen such number of registered participants.

The IPC/IAKS Distinction is aimed at increasing the accessibility of all sports facilities and architectural projects in order to give opportunities to persons with a disability to practise and view sport freely and without barriers. For the IPC/IAKS Distinction, 50 entries have been received, this also is a new all-time high.
This year, the IOC, the IPC and the IAKS also launched the first Architecture and Design Award for Students and Young Professionals on innovative designs and concepts for sports, leisure and recreational facilities. This award aims at young architects and designers currently studying architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and general design, and at young professionals being in their first two years of their professional practice.

Rugby starts planning for move to Cape Town Stadium

The Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Patricia de Lille – The President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, Mr Tobie Titus

We are pleased to announce today that the City of Cape Town and the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) have agreed to enter into formal exploratory talks to discuss the potential move of the WPRFU to the Cape Town Stadium.

Now that agreement has been reached to start formal discussions, both the City and the WPRFU will establish a number of technical teams to deal with a range of issues that need to be resolved before a possible move can be considered.

The City’s primary Department in managing these discussions will be Tourism, Events and Marketing Department, as Cape Town Stadium is one of six strategic assets that fall under their authority.

We understand that there is a great deal of public interest in this matter and we therefore undertake to keep the public informed of any major developments related to this process.

However, in the interim and in the best interests of the process, we ask that the technical teams are given the necessary space to complete their work.

These discussions come at a time that Cape Town Stadium is experiencing one of its busiest periods since the FIFA 2010 World Cup, with three large events being held at the Stadium over the coming weeks.

The City remains committed to doing all that is possible to make this world class asset truly sustainable and accessible to all Capetonians and we are grateful for the constructive spirit in which the WPRFU has agreed to enter into these talks.
