Mo Rush June 5th, 2009, 09:40 AM How about old Greenpoint Stadium? A part hasn't been dismantled yet: will it remain as a small stand, or will it be destroyed in a later phase?
It will be refurbished post 2010. During the World Cup it will serve as the FIFA commercial hospitality area. Media will use a bridge from the old stadium into the new stadium media centre and press facilities.
NMAISTER007 June 5th, 2009, 06:03 PM Any information on when the seats r going to be installed?

Even in this terrible weather they are still working on the roof not on the glass but on the roof trusses they are a little more protected from the weather since its below the level of the glass

I was just looking at the first photo I ever took of the old stadium ...
thought you might all like to see what the site used to look like end 2007
The omission of the credit is one thing but more importantly that someone has PAID me good money for that photo (amongst others they have a monetary value now)
yet IOL News took it for free from this website

i'm sure they will be there. that's CT in winter.
Mo Rush June 6th, 2009, 01:05 PM Thing about CT winter is that we experience ALL seasons!
So the imagery during the World Cup will unlike anything seen before.
Sunny days, misty days, spring days, cloudy days, windy days...all the seasons in one month and sometimes in 1 day!
Andrew_za June 6th, 2009, 07:39 PM I love the weather here in CT
If we get some of this fog during the games, it wont dampen the spirit or ruin the games.
All part of the African/South African experience :)
haggiesm June 6th, 2009, 09:43 PM ^^ just one thing. where will the fan park be? surely it should be under roof.

the stadium takes on differnet colours while the day progresses and with the different kind of weathers even at night its never the same
but :) always beautiful
and extremely proud to present our new soccer stadium to the world :)

NMAISTER007 June 8th, 2009, 11:03 PM When the roof is complete. September 2009.
They need 4 more months to finish the roof? Wow that's quite a long time
FromJoanne June 8th, 2009, 11:20 PM Below a small selection of the thousands of photos I take of this stadium and post daily on my photo blog
http://greenpointstadium-and-capetown.blogspot.com/
The new 2010 World Soccer Cup Cape Town stadium has been designed as a sculptural object
There will be floodlights in the roof to optimise illumination it will be a ‘ring of fire’ as in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium in Germany
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3332/3608834530_099e434a4c_o.jpg
The translucent roof comprises of two layers. Between those layers, services, like public announcement systems, will be installed.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3647/3590291422_292dd49f46_o.jpg
The upper cover is being fashioned from opaque glass covered with a white PVC membrane internally. The inner 16m will be a cantilever portion covered with clear glass.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3414/3607964607_07fc740be5_o.jpg
The outer PTFE breathable waterproof and windproof skin of the stadium will be a lightweight membrane construction which will be attached to the white trusses you see on the left of the photo
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3661/3608016729_713a4d3bc0_o.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2464/3607966513_5d20327d12_o.jpg
A raised platform will be built around the stadium to minimise its visual impact. The stadium will be as high as a 14-storey building, but the podium will make it seem shorter.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3656/3589483087_d021b80f49_o.jpg
Overseas visitors could be in for some surprises.
FIFA wants to prevent fans entering the pitch at all costs, so in order to meet safety standards, the field will be surrounded by a 2m-wide moat. In European stadiums, moats are no longer used as they create too much distance between fans and players. Fans are encouraged to behave better and strict legislation is enforced instead. Fans in Europe are, therefore, used to being allowed to sit virtually at the edge of the field.
Football fans with seats behind the goal posts will be more than 12m away from the pitch.
To make sure all fans are able to enjoy matches at Green Point Stadium, the three-tiered seating area is very steep that way there will not be any bad seats

TeslaCoil June 8th, 2009, 11:54 PM ^^ agree. to each of his own though.
Mo Rush June 9th, 2009, 12:15 AM They need 4 more months to finish the roof? Wow that's quite a long time
Outer compression ring
Inner tension ring
72 steel cables lifter simultaneously
72 trusses on top of the 72 cables
38,000sqm of glass on top of the 72 trusses
36,000sqm fabric below the trusses.
And all of this has to balance perfectly during installation.
If anything, roof installation has been very fast.
Svartmetall June 9th, 2009, 02:02 AM Its a great stadium indeed, but "the most beautiful in the world" is an overstatement to be honest.
Agreed. I can see this thread turning into a "but my stadium is better than yours" thread. Why the author couldn't simply showcase the stadium without using such obvious superlatives is beyond me.
hauchyi June 9th, 2009, 02:33 AM How do people get to the stadium? I don't see space for (huge) parking lots so probably not cars..
Is there a subway or light rail connecting it to the city center?

Why? Simply to attract people to the thread ;)

Btw, it looks really beautiful. Not sure if that could beat the Beijing Olympic stadium though.

Don't get discouraged by some of the above comments Joanne. You're doing a great job with your blog and beautiful photos. You're entitled to your opinion of Cape Town being the most beautiful stadium in the world, it sure looks great and if such a title would exist, Greenpoint sure could be nominated for it. But it is not appropriate as a topic title and since a thread about the Cape Town World Cup stadium already exists, this one will be deleted or merged with the existing one, suppressing the useless replies ;)

Mo Rush June 9th, 2009, 10:39 PM When is this stadium going to be completed? they have like exactly one year before the tournament starts
I think they know they have one year left but they aren't planning around 1 year left. they are on schedule as they have been since day 1 to hand over the stadium on 14 december 2009.
Mo Rush June 9th, 2009, 10:40 PM Looks like New White Hart Lane or... The Emirates Stadium or... Estadio Da Luz...
WHL wishes it looked like this stadium. Emirates wishes too. so does Da Luz.
The stadium bowl shape will be repeated in future and is based on the best viewing distance and best sightlines.
The rest of the stadium is dictated by the environmental decision, location, wind, noise and so forth.

the intention?
the intention with the design is to understated, elegant. NOT to attempt to compete with the Table Mountain backdrop and location adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean.
Its anything BUT trying to grab attention. It wont be lit up in hundreds of colours. It will glow not shine. It will reflect the colours of the day, whether its sunset or dark and gloomy or a bright blue sky day.

Actually, no.
White Hart Lane does not "wish that it looked like this stadium". I'm not going to get into the whys and wherefores because this thread is about Greenpoint. This stadium is great for Cape Town. Let's leave it at that, eh? And probably best, Mo, if you don't try to speak on behalf of Spurs. There's a good fella.

I'll rephrase.
The new WHL conceptual design has nothing on Green Point Stadium, and apart from the similar stadium bowl shape, is boring, bland, and lilke something out of the 90's.
Its(WHL) quite similar to Emirates and I'm sure many Spurs fans "wished" it looked less like Emirates and more like Green Point Stadium.
Chimaera June 10th, 2009, 10:09 AM Allianz ppffft...see how many colours i can be illuminated in..oh wipeee.
wembley...lol. now thats a beautiful shopping centre.Let's wait for the final result. Considering overall aesthetics, it definitely beats both Wembley Stadium and Allianz Arena, although, if you purely look at the seating bowl, I tend to prefer Wembley, because it's different from the Emirates/NWHL/Da Luz... template. I know, this is what you get when you combine rectangular stands with an oval stadium shape, and it's probably one of the best stadium layouts, and definitely doesn't make a stadium ugly or bad, to the contrary. It's all about the feeling of déjà-vu (and I realise that this is also the case when this argument is mentioned over and over again ;))
Despite this minor bowl remark I love this stadium. It will have become a classic when the likes of Allianz Arena and all of its fancy brothers and sisters will have long lost that "wow!"-feeling. It is in all aspects a very pure, sleek, harmonic design. It doesn't need symbolism, a screaming facade, impressive masts... to make up for anything else in the design.
JimB June 10th, 2009, 11:07 AM I'll rephrase.

Well, since you insist, I'll rephrase too. Why Green Point wouldn't be right for Spurs:
1. The roof - as pretty as the Green Point roof is, Spurs fans don't like a roof that tilts down and, from the upper seats especially, obscures a considerable proportion of the remainder of the stadium from view.
2. Exterior - hard to say because I haven't seen any detailed renders of the exterior. But from what I can see, I'm not sure that it would be right for London, N17. Great for Cape Town, though - especially in its coastal / park land setting, in the shadow of Table Mountain and the Lion's head.
3. Interior - judging by the plans and renders on page one of this thread, the stands at Green Point are significantly further away from the pitch than at the proposed new White Hart Lane. Again, that is something that Spurs fans would hate.
So I repeat, Green Point may be perfect for Cape Town (and don't get me wrong - I like the stadium) but it wouldn't be perfect for Spurs.
haggiesm June 10th, 2009, 11:39 AM ^^ i understand your points. but why are we talking like every club's or country's fans want something different. everyone wants good sight angles, a good design and a stadium to be proud of. i don't think spurs fans are different from anyone anywhere else in the world.
Mo Rush June 10th, 2009, 12:04 PM In no way did I say/imply that Green Point was "perfect" for Spurs
1. Its hosts rugby, hence the larger field, and MUST meet FIFA requirements
2. A downward sloping roof is perhaps not JimB's preference but it serves its purpose, reducing noise, providing more cover in sun and rain.
3.In a tightly clustered residential area such as WHL, a linear uniform facade is perhaps best to give the building a scaleless feel, so that windows/entrances/structures don't emphasize the gigantic scale of the building. Important for GPS, even more so go WHL.
My only issue with WHL, having followed the process, is the average design of everything except the bowl. I certainly wish and hope this improves as the design evolves and if it looks less Emirates and more WHL, then thats all the better.

Agreed.
My post was in response to Mo's claim that "WHL wishes it looked like this stadium". I was merely pointing out the various reasons why, if the new WHL did look like this stadium, it would be wrong for Spurs.

I agree that Spurs fans would have preferred a different and better design.
I disagree that that design would be Green Point.
Mo Rush June 10th, 2009, 12:58 PM I disagree that that design would be Green Point.
Which I agree with. It would though IMO and only IMO be a step or five up from the current facade treatments and general exterior design.

I knock down rubbish sports venue designs almost everyday.
This is nothing new or related to 2010. Good design is good design. Poor design is poor design. Nothing more.
I don't think Eden Park is horrible because I dislike NZ/Auckland. I don't think Loftus is awful because I dislike Pretoria. Yes, I'm biased towards GPS but not to the extent that I can't spot a good stadium design elsewhere in the world.

Chimaera June 13th, 2009, 11:13 AM Great panoramic shot. What a setting for a city: embedded between mountains and the sea. Cape Town looks quite compact/cosy in this picture (if you forget about the left/northward expansion for a second).

New York City 20?? June 17th, 2009, 11:34 PM Just curious. I know that this stadium is hosting the second match on opening day, but is there a specific reason why it isn't hosting the official opening while Soccer City in Johannesburg is?
It would've been great if the first images of the tournament to spectators around the world are these stunning aerial shots of the stadium. :)

because the LOC are not smart.
kazetuner June 18th, 2009, 07:41 PM Yeah, honestly. They could do it like Germany, where Allianz hosted the opening match and Berlin the final one. And I think it would promote more tourism to SA than Jo'burg.

Johannesburg is the center of soccer in SA. it's is where it is most popular.
The Johannesburg extended region has twice the population of Cape Town area and soccer city is the largest stadium.
To me it's only logical that Johannesburg has the opening and closing games.
Mo Rush June 18th, 2009, 11:49 PM Logical in some ways but Cape Town has always been the opening ceremony city.

http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/2010/gallery/PublishingImages/Green%20Point%20Urban%20Park%20Development/GP_plan_01_bb.jpg
Its a public urban sports park. So the golf course takes up space. There are cricket clubs with fields to the south and west of the stadium. There are rugby clubs and rugby fields in between. An urban park as well which will have a tea room/eco museum post 2010.
A tennis stadium is planned at the tennis precinct.
Apart from that its necessary and unlikely for any other buildings since its close to the CBD, waterfront, 60% of the hotel rooms in Cape Town and tourist zones.

Thanks, got completely soaked! :)
It is kind of complete, the "gap" you see will house temporary seating for the duration of the games. This is on both sides of the stadium.
They have started to fit some of the seats, its looking good, and as you can see by the previous pictures, the steel structure for the facade is too, being fitted.
Andrew_za June 24th, 2009, 09:02 PM *Once its constructed, the crane just lifts it up, 2/3 guys installs and the next one begins.
*There are two working points on either side to construct these.

No they havent. Those are "test" seats. Seat installation only after the roof is complete.
haggiesm June 26th, 2009, 12:02 PM is that before or after the temporary precast seating is installed?
Andrew_za June 26th, 2009, 12:08 PM However those seats will be used for the stadium, and preparation for installation has taken place. The stadium will be complete by the end of November, 1 December.
The main focus at this time is the Roof and the facade.
Mo Rush June 26th, 2009, 01:01 PM is that before or after the temporary precast seating is installed?
before. Temporary only closer to June 2010 but FIFA have requested temporary portion to be complete earlier.

Mo Rush July 7th, 2009, 01:55 PM Target is September 2009. Steel structure is almost complete include inner ring of purlins to hold the clear glass. I'd say early september or late august most work will be done with lighting etc. complete by mid September.

Capetonians will find a way, anyways to make use of that stadium. So please, dont let it bother you.

no snow on ground level here. This year's winter was very uneventful with lots of warm days and no major storms that I can recall.

Is there a gutter system or something of the sort at the end of the roof? If it slopes down then won't the water fall down onto the pitch?

Water is collected at the two low points of the roof and pumped into a storage system. The gutters are between the inner clear glass ring and the outer laminated glass ring of the roof.

Got it. Sounds good. Even though I don't love the exterior, the interior looks good and it should be a fine place to watch a match. Regardless of the stadium they built though, it was always going to take a back seat to the stunning setting surrounding it.

That's a prety narrow minded thing to say. If you think africa is cheap than you should look at the rest of the stadiums too, all of them are world class. Plus you can go too the Angola Threads and you can check out the stadiums they are building there for the 2010 African cup of nations cup...And trust me they aren't CHEAP!!!!!

The CEPA calls the new stadium "nothing less than a monstrous carbuncle that will mar the face of the renowned beauty of Cape Town.
Calling the 2010 Green Point Stadium "a monstrous carbuncle" on Cape Town's skyline, an environmental lobby group has mounted the strongest challenge to the project so far - in an urgent application in the high court to halt construction.
Fail.
nsub_guy July 20th, 2009, 10:52 AM This stadium gonna be awesome!I mean, when i first learned that the World Cup would take place down there i really thought of cheap made stadiums..
This one really made me change my mind
Shoo!!! Do you realy think we are people with limmited means. You should stop watching TV and start doing your own reseach regarding our country. You'll get a big shocker outta that one.

It is just stunnig unique from design and position.

Rei, you are right. It can't beat that. It is direct at the Ocean.
So GPS can only claim Top3 World Wide on this superlative.
Also not that bad, isn't it?
How, about GPS is "World Wide the closest to an Ocean plus a thousend meter high mountain"?!:)

Lydon July 23rd, 2009, 01:37 PM Why couldn't they just make it 70 000?
What's the point if the temporary seating is going to be removed anyway? No use squeezing in another 1000 seats for the sake of achieving a meaningless number of seats. It's not like they have 99 0000 and could have tried for 100 000...70 000 isn't exactly a milestone.
Mo Rush July 23rd, 2009, 02:54 PM The capacity aimed for is 65,000 for FIFA requirements. The shape and size of the stadium dictates the rest. Official capacity for the WC will be lower than 69

Ocean4 July 31st, 2009, 08:51 AM Mo, I love these "close ocean"-shots.
GPS has Table Mountain (about 1000m high) as a scenic sensational back drop, this almost everybody knows meanwhile. But not so sure how many are aware how close GPS to the Ocean is. Which is another optical magnet!
This alone makes GPS Top3 in the World.
Any shot from the Ocean with Ocean+GPS+Mountain in the background?

I prefer Greenpoint, More Spacious.
JimB August 6th, 2009, 11:33 AM I much prefer the concourses at GPS - more space and light.
But I prefer the Allianz once inside the stadium bowl. Tighter and steeper - or certainly gives the appearance of being so.

yes . thats one problem i have with the images of Green Point. They make the bowl look flattish when the stadium height is only 2m lower than allianz.
having gone on site, even being on the third tier of Green Point brings you really close to the action and is not advisable for those afraid of heights.

Ok guys I know you are dying to know but just too shy to ask :)but :ohno:No:ohno: so far I am not enamoured with my new cam
I find it hard to bond with it for various reasons Not least because I have only one lens with it, an all purpose zoom lens, its a very good one but I havent really been able to use it yet, every day's been lousy weather raining or hazy or grey like this afternoon the sun came out I was ready to go for a shoot at 5pm but then looking out I decided against it with all the haze I would be wasting my time so I just got some close ups for my blog from home ( my PS cam)
Mean while here is my new photo essay (tomorrow)
