Wembley was more than double that.

But Wembley was more then double nearly any other stadium in the world and alot of that wasn't even spent on the stadium but on the land itself

im guessing CP Stadium is the second most expensive after Soccer City?

Don’t know about the cost compares. One has always to look at the bigger picture.
CTS is for sure in the category “Most Beautiful and High Tech For Money”.

When I count in the jobs it has created and the huge infrastructure upgrade it has initiated,
then it was money really well spent.

Why are you raising this issue? Does anybody want its money back and demolish the stadium?
For sure nobody from Cape Town.

plus the greenpoint area has been developed as has the soccer city area and the precinct around the moses mabhida stadium. in that sense it's even better value for money because the areas have been improved so much.

And considering WHERE Greenpoint is in location to the city, the fact that the precinct has been upgraded is money very well spent.

Most work completed end of May, but there are some future developments beyond the World Cup e.g. resurfacing tennis courts, upgrading the promenade, a tea garden, eco-centre etc. Its still a work in progress.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE REDEVELOPMENT PROCESS THUS FAR

Who proposed the development of the park?

• The initiative to rationalise the strategic and publicly owned Green Point Common was started as part of a pro-active Forward Spatial Planning process in 1995. This culminated in the final adoption and approval of the Green Point Urban Park Concept Plan in June 2009 by the Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs & Development Planning (MEC) as well as the accommodation of the new Cape Town Stadium within the park. The approved Green Point Urban Park Site Development Plan and related Landscape Master Plan is currently being implemented in a phased manner at a total cost of approximately R35 million (pre- and post-the World Cup event) and is to be completed by July 2011.
• The Green Point Park (12.5 ha Public Park) is a social/public space within the greater Green Point Urban Park (105 ha Green Point Common).
• In 1995 a Public Participation Forum with over 90 organisations within the Metro area was set up with a professional facilitator. A 2.5 year period of consultation produced a Concept Plan to rationalise the Common. The Development Framework and Concept Plan were approved by Council in October 1998.
• In January 2007 the MEC issued a Record of Decision (ROD) stating that the Cape Town Stadium would be located on the Metropolitan Golf Course on the Green Point Common (which was zoned as Public Open Space).
• In January 2007 the MEC approved the Rezoning of a portion of the remainder of Erf 1056 to a Community Facilities Zone (in order to accommodate a multi-purpose stadium). The MEC issued an ROD stating that architectural and landscape guidelines should be identified together with a site development plan for the Common. A further requirement was that a formal metropolitan public participation process (PPP) be followed using a facilitator before approval is given. The GP Development Framework Concept Plan was used as the basis to identify a Draft Site Development Concept Plan (Plan A) which was used during the formal PPP.
• From March to May 2007 the formal PPP was conducted with extensive advertising and communication throughout the Cape Metro area. Public meetings were held at Atlantis, Woodstock, Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain, Muizenberg, Athlone, Green Point, Strand, Parow, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontain and Bo-Kaap.
• In March 2007 consent was granted for a ‘Place of Assembly’ and a ‘Place of Instruction’ on the portion zoned for community facilities.
• In July 2007 Council adopted Architectural and Landscape Guidelines and Concept Plan A (SDP).
• In December 2007 the MEC approved the Architectural and Landscape Guidelines but rejected Concept Plan A, necessitating the identification of a modified SDP (Concept Plan B) which interested and affected parties overwhelmingly rejected. This led to the final adoption of Concept Plan C Site Development Plan by Council in May 2008 and approval by the MEC in June 2009. This plan includes the Green Point Park.
• The MEC’s ROD and approved Concept Plan C drives all the detailed planning and design of the various precincts. It is undertaken by a consortium of specialist stadium and urban park consultants in a formal design review process. There is ongoing interaction with the interested and affected parties (including the ratepayer associations in the vicinity: Green Point Residents & Ratepayers Association, Mouille Point Resident & Ratepayers Association, Sea Point Bantry Bay RRA and Waterkant Ratepayers Association).

What role does SAIL Stadefrance play in the proposed Green Point Park?

• SAIL Stadefrance (stadium operator) is the leaseholder of the stadium and Green Point Park (GPP) and acts as an agent for the management and operation of these metropolitan amenities.
• The Operator is to pay a nominal rental of R100 during the lease period. In addition to the rental, the operator is obliged to maintain the leased area, including structures in “clean, tidy and sanitary condition”, take responsibility for providing security and for payment of all utility service charges.
• The public park will be open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year except when there is an event. No fee will be charged for the use of the public facility. It is envisaged that a fee will be charged for special events within the park.

What public participation has been undertaken?

• A formal public participation process as stipulated by the ROD issued by the MEC was followed before the Concept Plan C was adopted by the City and approved by the MEC.
• The City followed all legal/statutory advertising processes.
• The site development plan has been approved and is being implemented
• There is currently an application for the removal of a schedule condition, temporary departure and consent.
• The advertisement for comment appeared on Friday 05 March 2010. The comment period closes on 06 April 2010. The public are encouraged to comment.
• The application deals with the deletion of the schedule 2 condition to allow for recreation uses within the park, departures to allow for trading (informal and craft) and film shoots within the stadium, stadium forecourt and Green Point Park and consent use to accommodate activities relating to the functionality of a Metropolitan amenity and public park. All of this is in terms of the MEC’s Record of Decision and approval of the site development plan.

Why is the park being developed?

• The Common was granted by the Union Government to the City of Cape Town (TITLE DEED CF of 31, 28 September 1923) as vested land, to be retained as Commonage, used for general public recreation purposes and sports usage.
• When the Land Use Planning Ordinance and City’s Zoning Scheme came into operation, the zoning for the Common was Public Open Space Use: “for use of playing fields”, omitting the Recreation Use as originally intended in the Title Deed condition. This anomaly now needs to be rectified.
• In order to make the Park a ‘living, vibrant, busy and safe one’ as found in many cities in the world, this condition has to be lifted to accommodate a range of recreational uses. This is also the vision of the MEC and the City. A public park which does not allow activities cannot function as a public amenity and will not attract visitors.
• The City proposes implementation of a compliance management system (CMS) adopted by Council in December 2009 to environmentally monitor all future activities within the broader Green Point Urban Park.

What kind of organised events will take place at the park?

• The envisaged themes within the park could include an environmental park (bio-diversity garden, water-wheel, worm farms, wetland park, and water-wise garden); sustainable park (eco-centre and training facilities); learning park (training and skills transfer re: eco- centre and Green Futures training facility); play park (passive & recreational, disabled tot lot, and outdoor gymnasium); art park (exhibitions, specialist lectures and training); adventure park (cycling, outdoor climbing wall, and jungle gyms); events park (smaller outdoor concerts, farmers’ fresh produce market, crafts, dog shows, and flower shows); heritage park (Fort Wynyard, artifact exhibitions, etc).
• Facilities envisaged could include a tea garden, Eco Café, biodiversity nursery, auditorium, events, bicycle hiring, and craft markets. These uses are strictly park-related and will be carefully managed and monitored using the CMS.
• Events could include the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, Big Walk and Rugby Tens. Again, these will be carefully managed through the CMS.

How will revenue generated for the events be managed?

• Income-streams generated will be used for ongoing management and operational costs to ensure its functional and environmental sustainability.

What budget will fund the maintenance of the park?

• Operators’ proceeds and maintenance obligation.

Additional information

• The urban park is likely to be one of the City’s great metropolitan assets for use by all of the city’s residents and visitors.
• The City is committed to an ongoing, transparent, all-inclusive planning process during both the implementation and management

People's park to bloom in Green Point
By Ella Smook
Metro Writer

The City of Cape Town is set to unveil a multi-million rand park in the next few months, with officials saying the facility would become a "great inner-city park", similar to those in cities around the world.

And while attention in recent years has been almost exclusively focused on the park's R4.5-billion neighbour, the Cape Town Stadium, the Green Point Park is bound to lure Capetonians and tourists alike far into the future.

The park has been silently taking shape while fanfare surrounds the stadium and the city says it hopes to have all construction and landscaping of the 12.5ha park, which cost R54-million to develop, completed in time for World Biodiversity Day on May 22.

Pete van Heerden, the city's 2010 planning co-ordinator, said it would serve the everyday recreational needs of people who lived and worked in the city and beyond.

It had to become a "people's park", he said, adamant that it was not for Atlantic Seaboard residents only.

The park would be open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year and would be freely accessible to all, he said.

Van Heerden said security would be of the utmost importance, to ensure that visitors felt safe and comfortable.

Landscape architect Johan van Papendorp said amenities had been designed to lure young and old and would also accommodate disabled people.

An "inclusive play area" was being built, with special playground structures for disabled children alongside the equipment for the able-bodied.

The Sea Point Rotary Club had sponsored the equipment.

Adults would have a play area of their own, in the form of a "fitness precinct". This would have weather-resilient steel structures to cater to the fitness needs of park visitors.

Van Heerden said the common area, about the size of a cricket oval, would be kept clear so that the space could be used for events such as concerts, organic-produce markets or the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.

But most of the time the common would not be used for organised events and this was when families, friends and tourists could picnic and play.

There is also an amphitheatre, which is comparable in size to the one at the V&A Waterfront, and provision has been made for a tea room.

The park, which is shaped like a triangle with a "leg" abutting one corner, is accessible from four gates.

It is surrounded by a cycle track and a pedestrian walkway, with one path cutting straight from Western Boulevard on to the promenade, with the Mouille Point lighthouse the focus for most of the way and the Metropolitan golf course on the right.

Both Van Heerden and Papendorp waxed lyrical about the biodiversity garden, which is situated among bodies of water which will be fed by water flowing from Table Mountain which had previously run into the sea.

Van Heerden said the park would be irrigated by stormwater for now but that construction on the system which would use overflow from the mountain spring was in progress.

The park has already garnered praise from those observing its progress.

Urban Green File magazine commented recently that it was setting "a new standard" for landscape design of urban parks and public spaces in South Africa.

Cape Town Partnership chief executive officer Andrew Boraine, who inspected the area by cycle on January 23, the day of the first football match at the new stadium, said that he had no doubt that the facility would become "one of the best-used public open spaces in Cape Town".

While previously residents around the park had raised concerns over the stadium and surrounding developments, Marco van Embden, of the Mouille Point Residents and Ratepayers Association, said yesterday that people had "generally come to terms" with the idea that the development could be for the greater good.

Parreira hails Cape Town Stadium as one of the top 5 in the world

Bafana Bafana boss Carlos Alberto Parreira hailed the Cape Town World Cup stadium, after watching Nigeria's U-20 team beat the Amajita [SA's U-20 team] 3:1.

The Brazilian who led his country to World Cup triumph in 1994 ranked the stadium among the Top 5 in the world that he had seen.

"I must say that I've seen stadiums all over the world but this stadium must rank among the top five in the world," he said.

"I am feeling so good after coming to this stadium because I've been asked many times by people all over the world about South Africa's ability to deliver a good World Cup.

"Now that I've seen this stadium I will be able to say with even greater conviction that South Africa will indeed deliver.

"The ambience of this stadium is truly special."

Parreira also hailed the performance of the Amajita, declaring that South African football had a bright future.

"I was very happy to see three or four players really doing well, especially after South Africa were so impressive in the first half," Parreira said.

"In a very short time they could graduate through to the Bafana ranks - if SAFA provides them with a passage.

"It is the responsibility of SAFA to ensure that there are channels for these players to develop and stake claims in the national team."

"Big gap between the goal posts and the stands."

I’m guessing that the gap is due to the Logo advertising hardware that was used at the Ajax Cosmo game was not used – It seemed very close to the goal post and created a 800mm? high wall all the way round the pitch

http://e8y71.tk

I was told that it's costing a million Rand to hire the set-up for the W/cup Cape Town matches, see all over the world by the expected 700? million viewers (or is that the final)

I found it to be extremely distracting & intrusive - while the slow game was going on, the logo animation was impossible to ignore as the rhythms & speeds & brightness of the giant LED monitors, wizzed round the pitch  [niffty bit of soft ware] - based on research to be sure - to distract the brain, to be forced to notice what's being advertised
If it irritates then its counter productive - boycotting then kicks in!
:ohno:

The brilliant pitch grass man, Gustave, told me the grass under these gizmos will be dead when they remove them - but the back up grass is ready and waiting to be replaced with identical grass that was planted/seeded at the same time.

Did you know that the pitch is not flat? It has 8? sloping facets/side - so that when it rains or is watered no puddles will form on it- it all drains off into the "mote" that runs round the bottom of the seating and out to the pond created on the golf course [R7000 pa to become a member! Leased by the council - bet its for some ridiculously low amount] The golf course I believe has doubled in size thanks to the stadium being put where it is - I wonder if they paid a dime for all the work that was done for their benefit alone.

The man that grew the grass from seed is called Gustave - he's the quintessential expert on all things grass!
The pitch is mowed every 3 days because the grass is so young.
It was seeded in November 2009 and was played on at only 6 weeks old
It takes 4 hrs to mow the pitch.
When a match is due, reference points around the perimeter of the grass are used to line up the string which is the guide for the mowerer - to get that wonderful crisscross of squares.
The grass shavings add up to 2 large bags - & as the grass is so young it was ultra soft to the touch
The first grass grown was rejected by Fifa as the wrong shade of green for TV!
So Gustave had to start from scratch
He stayed at the stadium for a few weeks as the temprature and moster levels had to be taken every few hours – he became a religious man through that experience!
There are 2 identical pitches on his farm as backup, to cut and paste, as in the damage that will happen under the weight and lack of sunlight, of the giant linked monitors that flash animated logos of the sponsors, for the duration of the World Cup

Great stadium. Possibly my fav. Looking forward to seeing England play here.

With the sloping pitch thing - I thought that almost every pitch was cambered like this. One of my earliest memories of going to matches at old grounds in the UK as a kid was the camber of the pitch. You coudn't see the other side if you were in one of the first rows.

Not a huge fan of this stadium. Its good, but its not really a design that I find would become iconic like some have said. Its exterior is minimalist, which I understand they went for but it lacks and true design elements that give it that appeal that Soccer City or Durban has for example. Cape Town got the least stunning of the 3 designs IMHO. Its a pity as the spot certainly deserves more.

The seating looks plain yes but once they are filled who cares what colour they are. Seats dont do any good being empty so thats hardly an issue.

I like the "shell color" seating concept.
In Andrew's pic one can nicely see how it blends in with nature background. Nothing heavy on the eyes.

It also helped Cape Townian fear of White Elefants.
Means half empty stadium, where the seat color is giving the illusion that is well visited - which is important for TV media.
Because just from TV rights you can make a living.

Melb Avatar, have you browsed the thread?
Wouldn't you say that the roof is one of the most sophisticated technique and design Worldwide, would you?

I love the stadium design, because the piece of Art had to blend into the marvelous nature back drop. Stunning design didn't need always scream "Here I am".

That's kinda the whole point? It's not supposed to be iconic. It's supposed to be minimalist. A huge shining calabash or an arch plonked on top of it would look really stupid in Cape Town.

Yes and no. You spend that much, you want it to be a symbol. It all depends who you ask, but definately IMHO its the 3rd best out of the 3 major stadium developments.

Im not denying its roof design may have been complex and a technical feat of engineering, but lacks something for me.

It was never going to stand out. The location/setting is the icon.

No stadium can compete or should compete with that.

Its fine if its 3rd best, everybody is allowed an opinion.

Its the perfect design for arguably the most beautiful location anywhere in the world.

It's a very sexy stadium. The interior is imo the best of the 3...let's not forget that the arch in Durban can make for some pretty distracting shadows during afternoon games. The exterior is nice as well. Simple, sleek and clean. So all 3 stadia have something going for them.

Packed with wonderful visuals, modern edgy design & layout

I drove past the stadium the other day when it was cloaked in mist coming off the sea
It sits so well in its surroundings with the stone walls and beautifully pruned trees - sounds crazy but i felt moved by its stillness & quiet beauty

I think it's a blooming miracle what was done in such a short time [the stadium & the book]

There are seriously magnificent & talented human beings living here in Cape Town!

There seems to be a biased opinion though as most that are saying these kinds of things are from Cape Town :) Not saying its not good but could have been better. Should have a good atmosphere at the WC.

Have they secured any tenants for it after the WC?

The only similarity is the bowl. Bearing in mind, having dips in the stadium bowl allows spectators to enjoy the views of the surrounding area. Don't know what views the Emirates has, but i am sure there is no competition.

The dips in the stadium bowl at Emirates is nothing to do with providing views of London but rather were to aid the air flow throughout the stadium. The pitch was one of the most important considerations when designing the stadium from Arsenal's point of view and that is the main reason for the dips.

I'm sure the same is true at Cape Town to some extent given the sea breezes coming in though I'm not sure if the exterior cladding/wrap is designed to allow air flow through it? Maybe Mo Rush can answer that one?

Mo Rush
May 28th, 2010, 09:57 AM
The dips have nothing to do with views.

The best way to get 60,000 spectators as close to the action, with the best views is a circular seating plan when viewed from above.

When combining this with a rectangular stadium bowl, you end up with a curver upper tier.

Andrew_za
May 28th, 2010, 05:05 PM
The main focal points were those mentioned, but being able to be in the bowl and still see the views is an additional feature. Although it may not seem of much importance, it is a great addition to the venue, not the main reason for the dips (apologies for not being clear).

I didn't like it at first but it certainly has grown on me. I prefer Durban more though.

One can understand that, because MM Stadium in Durban has a larger "wow factor" with it's huge arch. Cape Town just could not do that. Our "wow factor" is our location between sea and Table Mountain. The stadium's design brief was to create an elegant stadium, with a timeless and simple design that does not compete with its natural surroundings.

TerrierChad
May 29th, 2010, 02:41 PM
It took me a while to appreciate that. The simplicity was lost on me at first but they've done a great job. Can't wait to see it in it's full splendour this summer.

Could some of my South African friends tell if it's true that most of the tickets of the so called "sold out matches" are sold to international ticket agencies (with trip packages included). I've seen many adds in Dutch, English and German papers which offered a total package (match and fly tickets) but I can't imagine Fifa would tolerate such packages

I love this ground, it's not as nice as the Peter Mokaba Stadium (yeah, you heard right ) but it's location is spot on. I'm not a fan of the temp seats, though.

It's probably been mentioned loads of times already, but what is actually happening when they get removed? Is either side going to have two big empty spaces or is something getting built into it?

OK: This stadium will be the first one where the GREAT French national team will play its first WC' game: France 6-0 Uruguay...:lol::lol:

IMHO, our National team doesn't deserve such a beautiful stadium for its annoying show :sly:!

the LOCATION is insane , i agree . But would you guys love this stadium if it was in a less glamorous location ?

*facepalm*

I'll explain anyway.

The architects were tasked with designing a stadium that is beautiful, but will not detract attention from its natural surroundings. It is not meant to make some huge statement or scream "look at me!" That is what the city's natural beauty is supposed to do. The facade is simple and changes colour along with the sun. The general shape is sleek and modern, and whilst its certainly very attractive, it isn't distracting. Similarly, the glass roof reflects the sky. It was designed to blend in, not stand out.

Plonking a huge calabash as Joburg did or a big arch as Durban did was not an option. Joburg and Durban's stadiums work for them. This stadium works for Cape Town because it was designed for Cape Town, not "a less glamorous location" as you put it.

And, for the record, I personally would like it in another city regardless. Beauty in simplicity.

Does anyone else think the exterior is insanley boring ? it looks like a plastic barrel that has been cut short or something. I think its a good stadium ( no track ) but i dont see the greatness in it. To me its neither architecturally stunning or perfect from a fan point of view ( large gaps to the stands).

Architecturally stunning? Yes, for sure.
Glas roof is architecturally outstanding and Worlwide unique .

Perfect from fan point of view? Yes, for sure.
Almost from every seat perfect view, because combined soccer/rugby requirements generated.

Huskies, when you are walking around the stadium you really get, why it is so impressive even without the awesome backdrop and
when you would get a ticket you could feel this stunning atmosphere, this stadium generates.

Feeling like a huge indoor bowl, where you can give the coaches advise even from the second tier.

My point was everyone is entitled to their opinion - I think it's a nice stadium but there are better. Others may think it's the best in the world.

You (collective not just Lydon) need to be way less defensive about the WC and just let things happen. It's like everyone believes there's going to be massive issues before it's even started. Chill! :)

Luke, there are many stadia around the World.
Thing is ..... - this is the Best. :)
Hope you will be able to experience it once in your life time.

Environmentally, architectural (design integration into environment, which is latest design philosophy),
inside atmosphere (closeness to the pitch and perfect view from all seats).
Using latest construction techniques and technologies. Never seen before roof shape and construction.

The only aspect why other stadia around the World looking good either, because of the enthusiasm of their audiences (i.e. soccer in England or baseball in USA).
These audiences make their stadia look good.

This is the only thing, where the CTS has to catch up
unless their are using the "rugby" fans. "They will bring down the house" either - Meaning full party :banana: And I feel this fifth dimension coming.

^^ Don't worry about our CTS and any criticism, Jerome Falke says it's of the planet's best designed stadiums, FIFA says it has one of the best pitches in the world. So, I'll take their opinion as being more valid.

Anyway, anyone who doesn't live in a place where you can surf and be in snow within an hours drive, where you're surrounded by mountains and crashing surf, where your city's administration was recently voted the world's best, where the architecture is historic and beautiful, where 8months of the year the sun shines non-stop, where it's never above 30C and never below 10C, where you're considered a global culinary and wine capital, where you're considered a global creative hub, where shopping and entertainment is world-class...

Mo, why have the seats along the side of the top tier not been installed?

I thought the point was that they would be installed for the World Cup but that capacity would be reduced afterwards?

Has there been a change of plan? Or is it just an optical illusion and the seats have actually been installed?

There were many empty seats tonight - it looked far from a full house. For a mouth-watering match too.

RSA fans? Tourist fans? FIFA ticketing?

FIFA! People were paying thousands to get tickets to tonight. The few released online were sold in seconds....how on earth can there only be 63,000 tonight?!?!?! For Spain vs. Portugal.

FIFA are rubbish at ticketing. I don't doubt 80,000 would have been possible were it not for FIFA

Believe you me it's not because people do not want to go. Myself and a number of friends were trying to get tickets to this match but we had no luck. The local FIFA ticketing office has a big sign up saying that all Cape Town matches are sold out. It pisses me off so much :bash:

Personally, I find the results of their ticketing policy insulting to South Africans.

^^ It's most insulting because a FIFA problem is looking like our problem. Cape Town could have easily have filled a 90,000 capacity stadium, yet FIFA won't let us have tickets; whilst seats remain open!

Technically, I would have loved to have seen two matches taken away from PE (their attendance, spirit and preparedness has not justified them so many matches). One, given to Durban and one to Cape Town, plus have the opening ceremony in Cape Town and closing ceremony and final in Jo'burg.

Although Jo'burg is indeed the major SA city and has the most people and economic clout, Cape Town is SA's premier "image" provider. Cape Town is the international marketing face of South Africa along with the game parks, culture, beaches etc.

It would have been nice if the final was played in Cape Town, actually. We could have left the world with a nice image of Cape Town looking all pretty, and the pitch is holding up the best of the major cities.

But oh well, nothing we can do about that now!

Cape Town shows the world how to street party

We were hoping to get 100 000 people on the Cape Town Fan Walk for the Germany vs Argentina 2010 World Cup Quarter Final match. At its peak, the Fan Walk hit an estimated 153 000! This means that when 65 000 people were in the stadium, over 90 000 continued to enjoy the Fan Walk. No ticket, no problem!

It may not be as big or as glamorous as the Rio carnival, but I reckon that a new Cape Town people’s tradition has been born through the 2010 World Cup Fan Walk experience. People have walked at night, they have walked in wind and rain. And the Fan Walk has been getting bigger on every occasion as the word spreads amongst locals.

The key challenge is going to be how we sustain this tradition for all future events at the Cape Town Stadium. Watch this space…

alot can be asked as to why so many people attended the fan parks and spent handsomely but didnt buy tickets...if they had the over subscription levels would have created the pressure to force FIFAs hand...bt typically people from RSA... leave sporting event ticketing late and miss the bus....live and learn RSA... want to play with the big world...play their rules. All part of the excellent tournament....imo.

Always wondered where the expression "Oranje" comes from.

"Oranje" resorts from Principality of Orange (Southern France now).
Foundet 1163 by Holy Roman Emperor Frederik I (King of Germany)
Inheritated by "Prince of Orange" William I (The Silent, Ruler of England) in 1544
becoming holdings of family Orange-Nassau (Royal House of the Netherlands today, who were present at Green Point stadium).
He was son of French Mother Claudia of Chalon-Orange from France
and German Father Hendrik III of Nassau-Breda from Germany

All genetically linked to Khoi San from South Africa :)

Zuma declares Cape Town his "favourite"

Zuma bowled over by Cape's World Cup class
By Clayton Barnes
2010 Writer

Cape Town has got the presidential stamp of approval as South Africa's best World Cup host city, with President Jacob Zuma describing it today as his "favourite".

Zuma was not alone in his praise for the city's World Cup campaign: SA Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani, who attended his first match in the city on Tuesday night, said the atmosphere had been "electric" and "magic".

And there's a very good chance Bafana Bafana will soon play at Cape Town Stadium, says Nematandani.

Zuma attended two of the eight World Cup matches in the city and even tested what Fifa described as South Africa's best pitch, when he jogged on to the field before the quarter-final on Saturday to take part in an exhibition game.

On Tuesday night, Zuma and Fifa boss Sepp Blatter chatted in the stadium's VIP suite as they watched the Netherlands claim a spot in the World Cup final.

After the match, Zuma gave Cape Town an unequivocal thumbs-up for its "thorough" planning.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Zuma had thoroughly enjoyed playing and watching soccer in Cape Town.

"Cape Town has been the president's favourite," said Magwena. "The city has really put on a show. Heads of state who have accompanied the president have also been very pleased.

"The president was impressed by the way in which Cape Town prepared for and managed the tournament."

Nematandani said: "I don't know how Cape Town managed to do this. It was magic. I saw a lot of Capetonians wearing orange. Cape Town truly got into the World Cup spirit. There's just one word to describe it: 'fantastic'!"

Nematandani said Bafana Bafana would play a friendly in Cape Town soon to thank South Africans for their support during the tournament.

While the World Cup might be over for Cape Town, the city has benefited from billions of rands worth of international publicity and world-class infrastructure - and left doomsayers eating their words.

Gillian Saunders, from research company Grant Thornton, said the tournament had been a perfect marketing opportunity to show the world that Cape Town and South Africa could deliver any major sporting event.

"The World Cup definitely improved Cape Town's profile," said Saunders. "It was a great tourism marketing opportunity for the country. It's events like these that grow business and event tourism."

The economic spin-off had been phenomenal, said Mansoor Mohamed, the city's economic, social development and tourism executive director.

He said an estimated R11 billion would be pumped into the local economy as result of the tournament.

"The World Cup has definitely had an impact on the way people spend," he said. "We didn't only have tourists spending, but locals also supported their teams, they celebrated in the city and spent a lot of money along the Fan Walk."

The most positive impact, said Mohamed, was the perception change.

"People now see Cape Town as a world-class destination," he said. "We are the real winners. This event was the best destination marketing tool."

Finance, Economic Development and Tourism MEC Alan Winde said the biggest factors that had previously affected international travel to Cape Town were perceptions about safety and cost.

"The World Cup gave us the platform to overturn our reputation from a no-go zone to a must-go zone," said Winde.

The World Cup has resulted in a R14.5bn infrastructural development boost for Cape Town.

The provincial transport department spent more than R1bn on new roads and upgrades, while R1.5bn was spent on the new multi-storey terminal at the Cape Town International Airport.

The once run-down Cape Town station was also upgraded to the tune of R480-million.

New lodges, restaurants and hotels - such as the One and Only at the Waterfront, The Taj in Adderley Street, 15 on Orange and The Coral International in Wale Street - have also been built.

Fans used the city's Fan Walk for the last time on Tuesday night. About 500 000 fans have used the walk to and from the stadium since the start of the tournament, while 450 000 fans have visited the Grand Parade for the Fan Fest since June 11.

"All I can say is a big 'thank you' to the people of Cape Town," said mayor Dan Plato. "Without their support and gees, the event would never have been a success. The people of Cape Town really came to the party."
