Q1 dwarfed by $500m Mumbai mega-tower

http://www.goldcoast.com.au/images/uploadedfiles/editorial/pictures/2010/06/11/indian-tower-dwarfs.jpg

Peter Truman | June 12th, 2010

THE Gold Coast's iconic Q1 skyscraper looks set to be dwarfed by a new contender for tallest residential building in the world.

Lodha Developers has announced plans for a 117-storey tower in Mumbai, India which will peak at a whopping 450m high.

If it is built, the tower will look down on our own Surfers Paradise high rise, which has 80 storeys and stands at 323m high.

And Q1 could tumble out of the top three soon, with two skyscrapers taller than it also being planned in the coming years in Dubai.

The Indian building, entitled World One, will have a total of 300 apartments spanning three and four-bedroom flats, private villas with individual pools as well as duplexes measuring 900sq m.
Have your say on the feedback form below

The luxury will come at a price though, with apartments expected to cost from $2 million to $13 million.

The tower will form part of a $500 million Lodha Place development in the city's Shrinivas Mill plot in Lower Parel, joining two residential towers, a shopping centre and commercial building.

Lodha Group managing director Abhisheck Lodha said the project would cater to Mumbai's 'global aspirations'.

Drawing a parallel with New York City's Empire State Building as a symbol of America's rise in the 1930s, the developer said World One would be a landmark for Mumbai.

"Every global city is made memorable by its architectural landmarks," said Mr Lodha.

"Be it the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Opera House in Sydney or the Empire State Building in New York, these vibrant forms reflect the passion and culture of the city they are located in.

"We are confident that World One will come to represent India's quest for excellence in the economic and cultural arenas."

The project is being designed by New York-based architects Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, which has worked on projects such as the Grand Louvre Expansion and Modernisation (Paris), the Bank of China Tower (Hong Kong) and the 241m-high John Hancock Tower (Boston).

The World One luxury tower will have a three-level 1858sq m clubhouse and spa, an 7432sq m sports club and more than 2ha of landscaping.

It will also house an open-air observatory at a height of 304m above the city, providing an unhindered view of the Arabian Sea and the cityscape.

The developers claim the view from this height will extend as far as 60km.

Well, at least any kind of construction/progress here at the moment is good imo. It's better than nothing at all!

A few million Dirhams of Structural Steelwork has been incorperated within the structure which is hidden from view. It ties the tower into the podium and raft.
Massive weight...holes left in walls to allow tie beams to be inserted on rollers.

Its progressing well :)

A few million Dirhams of Structural Steelwork has been incorperated within the structure which is hidden from view. It ties the tower into the podium and raft.
Massive weight...holes left in walls to allow tie beams to be inserted on rollers.

Its progressing well :)

That's great to hear. Much happening here that doesn't meet the eye huh. Yeah, I can only imagine how complicated it really is to raise a tower over 500m, not to mention how precise everything needs to be.

Thanks for the info BRAMBLE :)

And, as a skyscraper lover I want to say that I really enjoy the whole project, but I canīt understand why they continue doing more and more buildings when some of their neighbours (Marina Pinnacle, Sulafa) are on hold or with enormous problems selling their flats. Will be lucky if they can build 2 floors a week - if that's the case it will only be half way to the top... and then of course it won't be topped-out, glazed or fitted out for 2 more years after that!!! And that's if there's no more delays!!!

If the core will rise by 2 floors each week without any interruption and the cladding will be started quickly and go up along with the progress- it might be completed in september 2011. However- I doubt that it will happen.

Why? 2 floors per week is completely possible with such a narrow building, if they won't encounter any difficulties through the entire construction progress (which obviously won't happen- especially because the structure is pretty complex, and because it's built by humans and not robots).

I am well aware of the spires' history. I just think that they went with the design quite well and added more to it than just height. To me, they gave the design more balance, as opposed to the lopsided feel that - to me - the original - and current - version has.

When I checked the Pentominium website at the time of that posting (3 weeks ago now) they were still claiming 2011. Even a year ago they would have know that date was absolutely impossible!

If it is well funded then maybe it can rise at up to 3 storey's a week (concrete cures pretty fast in these hot countries). After a few floors the floor should stop changing and rise (maybe without changing) for 110 floors!

I know that. I wasn't referring to this particular plot (utilities/district cooling station), I'm talking about the possibility of a cinema at the SC.

^^ Marina Mall has Cinemas, even a few super luxurious ones with buttler service and stuff.

Parisian Girl
August 17th, 2010, 04:12 PM
^^ Indeed it has. Yeah, I suppose with the MM being in such close proximity with this block it will be perfectly convenient. No great hardship to cross the road I suppose. The butler service sounds pretty cool. Why not eh!? :)

Of course, my thinking is along the lines of the inevitable volume of traffic that will enter and leave this one block 24/7 once occupancy levels really begin to soar. A lot of units here = a lot of people/car traffic.

^^ The Marina Mall is certainly not in a walking distance. Is more then 1 km from there and I as a movie buff am totally against any form of distraction during the movie, and heaving a butler around certainly is ... but well, not everyone goes in the cinema because they loooove movies, otherwise DIVX format wouldn't have been successful.

Anyway ... the Pentominium is rising and that's what counts

^^ Amazing how deceiving some photos can be huh!? In some, MM looks a stone's throw away. But actually being there in person is very different, I know.

You're certainly right about any distractions - especially during a movie. That's a no go!

Absolutely! :cheers2: It's fantastic to see this tower finally rising!

Anything from 1-2 km sounds like walking distance to me. Sigh, city people :D

Good thing to see one of few interesting projects in Dubai rising again. I have been waiting for this one .

^^ Yes, but not when it's 45+ outside with 70+ % humidity level. I would say the walking distance is 2 km at least.

Don't be silly, no need. We all have the same objective here. Well, most of us skyscraper lovers anyway.

Great question. I'd probably go with BK, since its taller and has a higher profile. But the Pentominium has some sweet amenities for its residents. Still, gotta go with the world's tallest.

Parisian Girl
August 19th, 2010, 05:16 AM
^^ I agree. The BK is always going to have that very special aura surrounding it, simply because it is the tallest and the most illustrious skyscraper in the world. As long as it's the tallest, it will retain its edge over the rest imho.

no, i am just here to watch it growing!

lol I suppose there are many here who are hoping that this tower grows like Bamboo huh!? ;) :D

Yup! :)

If I could have get of the top floors of Pentominium, then I would choose it. I'd like to have a view of the sea from where I live. All the buildings are where they are because of their location to the water. To have access to the beach/marina when family and friends come over and what not. The BK has all the records and deservingly so, but, the residentual units are located in the middle and bottom part of the building. Im not certin on what kind of view one would have from there.

well i think we'll see the sky gardens.there's no reason to cancell such an important feature IMO...
it's not like a spire or so, it's something more...elementary, at least for the people who wants to live there.
