Did Andrea place in the honor roll in high school?

yeah same name, well we here call the schools AdJ and AdM as in Ateneo de Jacinto (college) and Ateneo de Matina (GS/HS)

and yeah Li-An was in the honors class :)

having a residence is tantamount of your origin..because example, Manny Paquiao do have his residence in General Santos, but he was born in Kibawe, Bukidnon..but media and other authorities have branded Pacquiao as a product of Gen.San...

He also scored a remarkable 357 goals in 357 matches, making him the club's all-time leading goalscorer. Alcántara is also the first Filipino and Asian player to play for a European club. After retiring as a player in 1927 at the age of 31 he became a doctor. On July 5, 1927, FC Barcelona played against Spain in a testimonial in his honour and he later served as a club director between 1931 and 1934. In 1951, Alcántara was one of three selectors that coached Spain for three games.

RP may lose Kalayaan islands by default (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/topofthehour.aspx?StoryId=111381)

The Philippines could lose its claimed territories in the South China Sea by default if it fails to pass a new baselines bill as required by the United Nations (UN).

Several congressmen warned Tuesday that if the House of Representatives keeps stalling on the bill defining the country’s territory--to include the disputed Kalayaan Islands Group (KIG)-- it may result in the "forfeiture of our claim to the territory."

To settle the territorial dispute in the South China Sea, the UN required all six claimants - Philippines, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Brunei - to pass a law defining their respective "archipelagic baselines".

The deadline is May 2009, a little over one year from now.

House Bill 3216 (the New Baseline Bill), meant to comply with the UN requirement, was passed on second reading last December 13. But the bill has been stalled for three months.

Bayan Muna Rep. Teodoro Casino in Wednesday’s session called on the chamber to schedule its passage. He was seconded by Paranaque Rep. Roilo Golez and South Cotabato Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio.

"How can we defend our territory when we are not defining our territory by a law," Golez said in a House session yesterday. "The legislative (department) is not that fast (in passing bills). We might forfeit our right to claim our territory."

"My concern is urgent," said Custodio. "The fishermen in General Santos and Saranggani actually go out of the supposed territorial boundaries. If we do not lay claim to our territorial boundaries, our neighbors will continue to harass our fishermen all over our territorial waters."

The KIG became a "poblacion" of Palawan in the 1970s.

The House committee on rules will take up on Tuesday Casino’s parliamentary inquiry.

Treason?

Casino said in a press conference Wednesday that Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Siquijor Rep. Orlando Fua told him that "officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs told Congress not to approve the bill… conflicts with some international agreements."

In a committee hearing last November, Golez also recalled that DFA officials interjected that the pending bill "might antagonize China ."

This led to "rumors swirling" that "an external force," referring to China , is "preventing" the passage of the bill, Golez said. "We are all curioser and curioser," he said.

Yesterday, Casino and colleague Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo filed House Resolution 496 directing several House committees to investigate the Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking (JMSU) entered by President Arroyo in 2004 with China that "reportedly sells out Philippine interests and Philippine sovereignty in exchange for overpriced loans for controversial projects which include the NBN-ZTE Deal, the North Rail and South rail projects, and the Cyber-education projects, among others."

The JMSU also includes Vietnam.

Golez and Casino insinuated that the loans may be China's "payment" for "compromising" the country’s territory. "Our territorial integrity is paramount over concessional loans," said Golez.

The House Resolution cited an article in international magazine Far Eastern Economic Review, which accused President Arroyo of "selling out to China the Philippine and regional interests in South China sea" when Manila entered into the JMSU.

The article said that "through its actions, the Arroyo government has given a certain legitimacy to China’s legally spurious ‘historic claim’" to most of the South China Sea .

"This is bordering on treason if an agreement with China will compromise our territory," Casino said.

[b]Spratlys documents destroyed?

Meanwhile, Makati Mayor and United Opposition (UNO) president Jejomar C. Binay today expressed fears that sensitive documents on a "Spratlys deal" between Manila and Beijing may have already been conveniently misplaced or even destroyed, along with those concerning controversial government projects such as the ZTE-national broadband network deal and the Southrail project.

"Under the Arroyo administration, official documents on controversial government deals have a tendency to vanish into thin air," he said.

The opposition leader said documents relevant to the Spratlys deal with China, which allegedly allows Beijing to explore Philippine territorial waters, must be secured immediately, to ensure "that they are not stolen, misplaced, or destroyed.

Binay said he was bothered by reports that the memorandum of agreement (MOA) on the the Chinese-funded Southrail project have not been located by officials of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) and may have been lost.

He also recalled that the original ZTE-NBN contract was reportedly "stolen" in Boao, China.

Rodolfo Lozada Jr. had earlier told the Senate that like the ZTE-NBN deal, the Southrail project was overpriced, and kickbacks were received by administration allies.

Binay had asked the Senate to immediately act on a bill filed by detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV to investigate the "Spratlys Deal", which had been described by some sectors as an act of treason.

If Mrs. Arroyo had indeed signed the deal allowing China to explore Philippine territorial waters, "she has effectively given away Philippine sovereignty to a foreign power," Binay said.

Binay said the failure of the PNR to submit the Southrail documents would show that Arroyo's revocation of Executive Order 464 "was a mere PR move to placate the [Catholic] bishops."

"Despite the over-hyped revocation of EO 464, the Southrail case shows that the Arroyo administration is the least interested in cooperating with the Senate, and would do everything to delay or even derail legislative inquiries," he said.

The opposition leader said measures should be taken to ensure that all official documents and contracts remain intact and immediately provided to the proper investigating bodies.

Government officials must be held fully accountable, and if warranted, should be charged with infidelity in the custody of government documents, he added.

Citing newspaper publisher Amado Macasaet, Trillanes said Mrs. Arroyo might have committed treason if she signed the deal which would allow China to explore for oil and gas in the country's territorial waters.

Spratlys deal limited to surveys

But in a March 3 statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the JMSU does not involve oil and gas exploration or exploitation.

"The JMSU is a joint evaluation of marine resources potential in the area claimed by participating countries and is limited to scientific surveys," the DFA said.

"The JMSU does not impinge on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Philippines. Any activity beyond scientific surveys would be subject to further consultation and agreement among the participants, and would have to conform with our constitution and laws," the DFA said.

Laguna de Bay in danger of dying, official says

By Jim Gomez
Associated Press/inquirer.net

MANILA, Philippines -- Laguna de Bay, one of Southeast Asia's largest, could become biologically dead in a few years if rampant pollution is not stopped, an official said Tuesday.

The lake, located southeast of the capital, Manila, has become a virtual "septic tank" from the influx of more than 32,000 impoverished families, who dump their waste into the sprawling freshwater lake from illegal shanties along its 238-kilometer (147-mile) shoreline, according to Edgardo Manda, who heads the Laguna Lake Development Authority.

Factories have sprouted along the shore of Laguna de Bay over the years, and some of the 14 cities and 47 towns in the area also have contributed to the pollution by operating garbage dumps that leak waste into the lake.

The shallow lake produces about a third of Metro Manila's supply of milkfish and other edible fish, helps generate electricity and serves as a key transport route, Manda said.

"We have to raise the alarm bells now," Manda told reporters as organizers launched an April 26-27 bike tour around the lake to call attention to what he called a "harrowing crisis affecting one of the most important natural water basins in the country."

"If we don't do something within the next five years, the lake will continue to deteriorate and glide to a stage no longer salvageable," Manda said.

Manda appealed to international aid agencies to finance information drives to convince local government officials and lakeside dwellers to adopt measures to mitigate the pollution and establish effective waste disposal systems.

Massive fish kills already have been reported in recent years. About 100 rivers and streams drain into the 90,000-hectare lake, he said.

The illegal lakeside dwellers, numbering about 100,000, will have to be removed eventually, but that has not been seriously considered because of the massive funding needed for relocation, Manda said.

Philippine law says the government must provide housing loans or alternative housing sites for squatters whose houses are demolished. In some cases, however, many end up returning to their old neighborhoods because resettlement sites often are far from the city and its job opportunities.

Authorities will start dismantling illegal fish pens, which obstruct commuter boats, in the lake in the near future, Manda said.

Iligan revisited

The City of the Majestic Falls

Ayo Gunting

http://mbweb.alchemy.com.ph/db_images/articles/wf1206517677.gif
It is always pleasantly surprising to note that Iligan City is blessed with a picturesque countryside bordered by a seemingly infinite expanse of sea, adequate amenities complemented by well-paved main roads, warm and hospitable people, and most of all the seemingly seamless majestic waterfalls.

Although it may not often be included on most people’s lists of must-see destinations in the country, its simple charms invite us to take a detour from the usual and allow us to experience a refreshing change of scene.

Located on the northwestern coast of Mindanao facing Iligan bay, 795 kilometers south of Metro Manila, Iligan is a rare mixture of what is natural, industrial and cultural.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz and Congressman Vicente Belmonte, Jr. are now making moves to bring Iligan out of the shadows and position it as a haven and destination for both tourists and investors, what with its rich history, active cultural and art scenes, and numerous waterfalls including the renowned Maria Cristina Falls.

"The city has not been getting the attention it deserves," Congressman Belmonte says. "Information has to reach both domestic and international markets. Tourists have to be updated with Iligan’s latest tourism offerings."

On the other hand, Mayor Laurence Cruz says Iligan is a city with big dreams. "And it has the will and the means to make these dreams come true," he says.

From a small trading and farming town of several thousand inhabitants sixty years ago, it has metamorphosed into an industrial city with more than 300,000 culturally diverse people living and working harmoniously towards their individual and the city’s well being.

Its industrialization came about due to its hydroelectric power plants, which supply the cheapest power in the whole island of Mindanao.

Despite industrialization, Iligan has preserved the beauty of its gifts from nature: its 22 wondrous waterfalls, crystal-clear water springs, and pristine beaches. During its "Diyandi Festival sa Iligan" in 2007, there were numerous unique cultural events which were must-sees for domestic and foreign tourists.

The most accessible of Iligan’s 23 waterfalls is Mimbalut Falls, which is 90 feet high and 18 feet wide. It is located approximately 10.5 kilometers from the city proper

One of Iligan’s main attractions, aside from the brimming falls, is the Maze Resort Parks and Resort, which provides a unique blend of relaxation and fun.

With facilities for the sports-minded and adventurous, Maze is a haven for those who want to spend quality time alone, or in the company of family and friends. Bathed in glorious sunlight and cooled by mountain breeze, one finds idyllic comfort in nature’s bosom amid a collection of colorful birds, exotic flora, and shady fruit trees.

Other attractions are the pools of Timoga, the Anahaw Open Ampitheatre, Tinago Falls, Dodiongan Falls, Limunsudan Falls, Lumbatin Falls, and the Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House, which sits on a 2.5 hectare lot that was transformed into a museum that is open to visitors, and Tatay’s Grill. www.mb.com.ph

Is the number of "islands" actually the 7,107 that it's always been claimed to be?

Aside from the debate surrounding whether a feature is still considered an island despite appearing below the water line during high tide, there still are certain issues/contentions that need to be addressed or clarified:

Does the number include all the islands/cays/shoals/rocks/sand bars in the Kalayaan Group and Scarborough Shoal claimed by the Philippines? Moreover, what is considered to be an "island"? Do lake/river/delta islands count? Are big rocks in shallower waters included in the count? When was the count conducted, and who did the count?

PAG-ASA ISLAND, PINAG-AAGAWANG PARAISO (Last Part)

“Warfare is no longer the name of the game here in Kalayaan. The name of the game now is economic power, I mean economic sharing,” sagot ni Cadu*ngog, kung handa ba ang Air Force sakaling sumiklab ang isang digmaan sa pagitan ng mga bansang umaangkin sa Spratlys.

Agad ding nilinaw nito na “diplomatic matters” ang isyu ng Spratlys at nasa Kongreso na rin ang usapin.

“But as far as the military is concerned, defen*ding our claim sa Spratlys ay nandun pa rin. We’ve to defend the dignity of our country against intruding outside forces,” ani ng heneral.

Apo Island top tourist site (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2008/June/04/negor3.htm)
BY RENE GENOVE

The top tourist attraction drawing in the highest number of tourists in Negros Oriental is Apo Island , provincial tourism officer Myla Abellana said Monday.

Tourists come to Apo for diving and snorkeling, she added, but said her office does not have exact figures on the revenues generated from the island.

Next to Apo is Bais City with its dolphin-watching area, and the newly-improved Balanan Lake in Siaton.

Records also show that Koreans topped the list of tourist arrivals, among foreign visitors registered in the first quarter this year alone.

Koreans accounted for 312 out of 3,971 tourist arrivals in January and March; Americans, 220 out of 4,373 in February, and 315 of 5,126 tourists in April.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano had said the heavy tourist traffic in the country could generate more quality jobs and additional income.

He said the efforts of the Arroyo administration in promoting the Philippines as a tourism destination are paying off, with tourists spending a total of some $1 billion in the country during the first quarter of 2008 alone.*RG

hindi ko alam ang deeper meaning ng seal though you can easily recognize
a)Mayon Volcano with 3 stars in it b)an anchor perhaps due to the fact that Legazpi is a port city;
c)a coconut tree maybe because it's major source of livelihood is agri-based.

SILVER AND COOL BLUE COLORS
The silver letters and blue backgrounds symbolizes purity and nobility.

THE MODERN SUGAR CENTRAL

It represents progress in the development of the sugar industry in the province and its capital city, Bacolod. In the early stages, the crude muscovado mill used in the production of sugar, was not only slow and tedious, but also produced a sweetener of poor quality as compared to refined sugar. On the other hand, because of the introduction of modern machinery and scientific breakthroughs in sugar technology, the difference in quality and quantity of the commodity produced has made Bacolod the sugar capital of the Philippines and provided the means for its progress and development as a highly urbanized city. The Tractor is typical of the advances that reflect the transition of the sugar plantation in the locality to the modern setting.

THE FULL GROWN, FLOWERING SUGARCANE

Symbolizes the fertility of lands in the local sugar plantations, with the sugarcane ready for harvest and delivery to the sugar mill. Sugar is the chief product of the city.

THE CARABAO HEAD AND THE PLOW

Crude in their ways as viewed from today's standards, but still dependable as they were in the golden times. On the other side is its modern day counterpart.

THE TORCH

Which is located at the center of the seal, spells progress in all its benevolent ramifications. The City of Bacolod can modestly lay its own claim to progress in spite of its humble beginnings as typified by the momentum of expansion and prosperity that it now enjoys.

I agree. A seal should have a few simple and easily described elements placed in a recognizable coat-of-arms, that can stand alone as a symbol even without the ring of text proclaiming to which LGU it belongs. If you remove the text in the majority of LGU seals today, it would be very hard to identify which one belongs to what town or city. As a rule of thumb, most seals that were made during the American era closely followed American models with a bit of European style, and all that came after that evolved into what I would call as the confused Filipino style of heraldry, which mainly borrows from American tradition of putting any design into a circle and filling it with anything that can represent the LGU, even if it runs the risk of being cluttered, redundant, unoriginal, unsightly or unrefined.

I love the former province of Zamboanga's coat-of-arms, which simply consisted of a quartered shield with two orchids and two seahorses. It was easily recognizable, elegant and simple - very effective in representing the land and sea bounties of its province. (North) Cotabato's coat-of-arms also looks excellent, but it is outdated, as it was made when the province still covered the city after which it was named and a Muslim-majority populace. Cebu City's seal is very iconic, so is Manila's and Puerto Princesa's.

RP wonders dropping out of race
By Mayen Jaymalin
Thursday, August 14, 2008

The Philippines’ nominations to the new seven wonders of the world online contest are continually dropping from the top 20 list, the Department of Tourism (DOT) reported yesterday.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said that as of the latest count, the Tubbataha reef ranks eighth, the Chocolate Hills ninth, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park 10th and Mayon Volcano at 18th place.

“We have the most number of destinations in the top 20 list, which is dominated by Asian and South American countries. But we are continually dropping,” Durano pointed out.

Durano then renewed the DOT’s call to the general public to continue voting for the country’s nominees.

“The DOT encourages everyone to participate in the survey,” Durano said as he expressed appreciation over efforts of communities and groups in promoting the nominated destinations to both domestic and foreign audience.

Durano said the rankings are updated twice daily and may be viewed at http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/liveranking. Voters have until Dec. 31 to log in their nominations at www.new7wonders.com and the top 21 finalists at the end of the first round will be announced in January 2009.

A second year-long competition will then be held to determine the top seven contenders to be officially declared the new “Seven Wonders of Nature” by the year 2010.

Durano, earlier, expressed hope that the search would not only promote the country’s destinations to foreign tourists but also encourage every Filipino in advocating the conservation of our ecological treasures.

“By landing in the list of the Seven Wonders of Nature, tourism activities near these sites will rise, thus benefiting the livelihood of Filipinos living nearby,” the tourism chief added.

Since its inception on July 7, 2007, the Seven Wonders of Nature list has included the Tubbataha Reef and Chocolate Hills as top candidates in the 2nd and 3rd place positions.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean National Park has beaten India’s River Ganges in reaching for 5th place, while the Mayon Volcano bested Japan’s Mount Fuji and was ranked 9th in the overall tally.

The search for the Seven Wonders of Nature was organized by the non-profit Seven Wonders Foundation, an association that aims to conserve the world’s natural and man-made heritage through advocacy and documentation.

The original seal of the City of Iloilo is located at the center itself, bearing an inscription of "La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad de Iloilo -1890."

The "La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad de Iloilo" was given by the Queen Regent of Spain as a reward to the loyalty of the Ilonggos towards the Spanish crown during the Philippine Revolution in 1896-1898. (Iloilo was also the last Spanish bastion where Gov-Gen del Rios made "reforms" which were too late).

Seen there is the old Fort San Pedro (powdered during "The Liberation" and it does not exist except for its base")m Guimaras Strait and the cliffs of Guimaras.

The birds (or stars in some accounts) symbolizes the 4 towns/2 cities merged into one Iloilo City (this trend was believed to have been started upon reinstating the "city" status of Iloilo in late 1930's. Jaro joined Iloilo 2 years later after the towns of La Paz, Mandurriao, Villa Arevalo, Molo and Iloilo have merged in 1938.

Later on, the city seal was incorporated with the Philippine coat of arms, thus the present city seal.

This is just my opinion.

Since Laguna de Bay is now heavily polluted, and it is generally shallow, perhaps it is better to fill it up, at lease the portion next to Metro Manila. The government can sell the rights to a developer, who will reclaim and develop it under strict guidelines. Afterwards the government can tax the reclaimed land and all the development that get built.

The rest of the lake may still be saved. As part of the package, the developer may be requied to clean up the rest of the lake to meet certain standards.

At present the policies of the LLDA are counterproductive so that the shores are left open to the proliferation of squatters. The irony is the LLDA's policies are worsening the condition of the lake.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalayaan,_Palawan
Kalayaan is a 5th class municipality in the province of Palawan, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 223 people in 12 households.

Kalayaan is composed of only one barangay, Pag-Asa. This island has a 1.3 km airstrip that is used both by the military and civilians. It has a regulated civilian population of about 350, most of whom are fishermen. This civilian population is the result of Philippine government initial efforts to put civilians in the Kalayaan. Once a month, a Philippine Navy Ship goes to this island to drop supplies of goods. This island has a water-filtering plant, power generators, weather stations and a communication tower which is built by the Philippine-based SMART Telecommunications.

The municipal government of Kalayaan is making new projects to promote tourism for the island. Also, they had been successful in convincing many Filipino businessmen to invest in Kalayaan.

Same sentiments here.

I was a bit thinking na ang mga official seal dapat rin pala mga coat of arms tulad nito:

National hero Antonio Luna, younger brother of painter Juan Luna, was born on Oct. 29, 1866, in Binondo, Manila. He was raised in an area near the Pasig River, which was why he used the pen name “Taga-Ilog,” from which the term “Tagalog” was derived.

Bulacan's and Naga City's websites have always been consistently rated/awarded as among the top websites in their categories.

www.bulacan.gov.ph
www.naga.gov.ph

Bulacan's website is impressive for the amount of information it holds and services it offers. The visuals are excellent too.

Naga City's website has been among the pioneers of web presence ever since the early 2000s. One can only hope that its consistency is emulated by other more service-oriented LGUs.

Paulino Alcántara (born October 7, 1896, Iloilo) - was a former Filipino-Spanish football player and manager who spent most of his playing career at FC Barcelona. He also played for the Catalan XI, the Philippines, and Spain. Alcántara made his senior debut for FC Barcelona at the age of 15 and remains the youngest player ever to play or score for the club. After retiring as a player in 1927 at the age of 31 he became a doctor. On July 5, 1927, FC Barcelona played against Spain in a testimonial in his honour and he later served as a club director between 1931 and 1934. Monique Lhuillier
French-Cebuana haute couture designer

Born Diane Monique Lhuillier to French, Spanish/Filipino parents, Monique was raised in the southern part of the Philippines called Cebu. As a child, Monique was very influenced by her mother's glamorous sense of style and was exposed to the importance of style because the family traveled extensively. Her favorite destinations were always Paris and Los Angeles. At the early age of 15, Monique left home to attend the prestigious Chateau Mont-Choisi boarding school in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was while she was in Switzerland that she decided to pursue her dreams of becoming a designer. She decided to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and move to Los Angeles.

In 1996, Monique launched her first bridal collection. It was very well received by retailers and by magazine editors. In the next year, Tom took control of the company and turned Monique's vision into reality. The collaboration has proved to be very successful. In 2001, Monique designed her first evening collection, which has now developed into a complete ready to wear collection.

Monique received the 2001 Glamorous Bridal Designer Award, the 2002 Avant Garde Bridal Designer Award and the 2003 Designer of the Year Award from Wedding Dresses Magazine and the bridal industry members. In 2003, she was also inducted as a new member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

New records in the Philippines

On 15 March 2008 – nearly 487 years to the day after Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines – businesswoman Sister Grace Galindez-Gupana (Philippines) achieved five Guinness World Records in a single day.

With the support of the Philippine National Red Cross, Sister Gupana embarked on a mass medical mission to provide 24 hours of free screenings for the marginalized Pintong Bocaue community. In doing so, she established four Guinness World Records:

Most blood identification tests in 24 hours: 260
Most cholesterol readings taken in 24 hours: 527
Most blood pressure readings taken in 24 hours: 2,302
Most diabetes readings taken in 24 hours: 503

Sister Grace wanted to involve children of the community in a record-breaking attempt too, and recruited youngsters from the local Baranggay Pintong Bocaue school to complete the longest drawing. Using coloured crayons, the children drew a picture of a long dragon with horns. The drawing was subsequently burned, in a symbolic act representing the victory of good over the devil.

All records were accredited in person by the Director of Records from Guinness World Records, who flew from London to Manila to certify that each record attempt had been carried out legitimately and to present Sister Gupana with certificates for her new records.

Sister Gupana is not new to record breaking. Last year, the ardent supporter of the State of Israel and its citizens reaped her first two Guinness World Records in the Holy Land for the largest flag (18,843 m²; 202,823 ft²) and for the largest banner (54,451 m²; 586,103 ft²).

For Sister Grace, breaking a record is a way of showing to the world that Filipinos can make a difference and are capable of helping and supporting those in need.

In regards to her remarkable feat, Sister Gupana states, "7 records is an amazing achievement for a lifetime."

New Guinness record for RP: Most killings in 2004
Updated January 25, 2009 12:00 AM

The Philippines has made it to this year’s “Guinness Book of World Records” for having the most number of recorded murders based on United Nations data in 2004, an election year.

Sen. Richard Gordon revealed yesterday the country’s inclusion in the widely published records list and expressed concern that it might further tarnish the country’s image.

Elections in the country are usually characterized by political violence, although there had been relatively few poll-related killings in 2004, at least based on official estimates.

“We should shudder at this world record because it shows that the best legacy our generation will leave behind is our reputation for succeeding at killing people rather than making our country safe,” Gordon said in a statement.

The Guinness record was based on 2004 United Nations data that placed recorded killings in the country at 3,515.

“Our country has a penchant for setting world records on almost anything under the sun, but this record of having the most murder cases recorded tells something really serious about our country’s public and order situation,” he said.

“We have heard of studies branding our nation as one of the most corrupt countries, or one of the most dangerous places for journalists, and now we have this record of being number one in murders,” he said.

“There is nothing wrong with setting world records (but) the country should focus on more important things, such as erasing the record of having the most number of murders in the whole world,” he said.

The country’s recent world records include the largest sticker wrap, longest pastillas, largest number of people brushing teeth, longest beer bar, longest barbecue and longest longganiza.

Gordon said the country’s other world records symbolize unity, cooperation, creativity and diligence among Filipinos, but these could easily get tarnished by the recent record on murders.

Gordon, whose father was assassinated, has been very vocal against work-related or political murders, especially those of journalists, judges and public officials. – Aurea Calica

By land area:

Smallest: San Juan, with an area of 5.94 square kilometers.
Largest: Both Davao City and Puerto Princesa claim to having an area ranging from 2,300 to more than 2,500 square kilometers. Contrary to popular belief within the Philippines, Davao City does not hold the record of being the world's largest city in terms of land area.

By elevation:

Lowest: Most Philippine cities are located on sea level. However, some parts of Navotas, Caloocan and Malabon are below sea level, and continue to experience subsidence.
Highest: Much of Baguio is situated more than 1,300 meters above sea level. However, part of Mount Apo, the highest Philippine peak, is under Davao City's jurisdiction; the cities of Kidapawan and Digos both have claims on the territorial jurisdiction of the mountain too.

By population (2007 census figures):

Smallest: Palayan City (33,506)
Largest: Quezon City (2,679,450)

By population density (2007 census figures):

Most densely populated: Manila, with 43,079 people per square kilometer.
Most sparsely populated: Puerto Princesa, with around 70 to 81 people per square kilometer (calculated number depends on the land area figure used).

Most extreme points:

Northernmost: Laoag
Southernmost: General Santos
Westernmost: Puerto Princesa
Easternmost: Bislig

so, Davao City is not the largest city in terms of land area? maybe Puerto Princesa is the close second.

It just states that....

"Both Davao City and Puerto Princesa claim to having an area ranging from 2,300 to more than 2,500 square kilometers."

Both cities claim to have large land areas but none claim to be the largest city in the Philippines.

"Contrary to popular belief within the Philippines, Davao City does not hold the record of being the world's largest city in terms of land area.

And it disclaims the widespread notion in the Philippines (meaning that Filipinos are misinformed of the fact) that Davao City is the "largest city in the world" in land area.

^^ I think in Guiness World Records, the one that is listed in the largest city in terms of land area is Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia.
