From the far sight it looks so boxy, but when I examine it closely, I like the details.

They're still busy with demolishing some parts of the old building, but it looks like they're ready to start with the actual construction of the two towers.

Time for another update, today:

They are pumping the water out of the lake for the underground car park, a few weeks ago they build a concrete floor under water.

On the site of the smallest tower they have started the groundworks before the foundation can be made. It involves the relaying of some pipes and cables.

They're also still demolishing the last parts of the old building

On the other site of the old building they started to drill holes, probably for the new foundation. For the difficult places they use this machine.

It takes a bit of time to actually start constructing the towers, but with the complexity of the location that's not surprising. Parts of the old building will be in use for the hotel the entire construction. That makes it more difficult then when when you start building on a open field. Hopefully we'll see some proper foundation work in the near future and after that it will only be upwards!

It's a very impressive building site! It's huge and the tram viaduct and the because it's build around the old building it's very interesting. All this right between the busy central station, the park and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And it will soon start to rise, making the updates more interesting.

I've been to The Hague on Sunday and was amazed by all the construction near the Centraal Station. The 5 skyscrapers going up there will really change the skyline of The Hague completely.

The tram viaduct doesn't go trough New Babylon, but it goes over the underground parking right next to it. But above the underground parking a project called "De Lampion" will be build. An old design this project would have been build partly over the viaduct. A new design could have the same feature, that's not something out of the ordinary for The Hague btw. There are tram viaducts going trough buildings on several places.

Part of the tower is old, i can see and construct new side by side... Yes?

^^ Yes, the New Babylon is build completely around and partly over the old Babylon. And until now all sides weren't build at the same time, the part over the hotel was build first and has topped out already. But from now on it will be full construction at the same time on the other 3 sides of the building. When it's finished it will be one complex, but old and new.

All in all it's quite an extraordinary build around the old complex even if the towers aren't to high on a World level, but they are very tall for the Netherlands.

I can remember at the time i was a child the old babylon was build, lots of people in the hague didn 't like it at all but i think nowadays the will like it more.

What was Babylon? The name of the central train station???

Also, why did they keep the old building? It isn't heritage architecture, and it looks like it would have been far easier for them to demolish it and start from scratch.

I have to say though-- I am fascinated by how the old structure is being incorporated. Very intricate and intriguing!

It was a mixed use building: shopping mall with offices on top next to the central station. Don't know why they kept the old building. Maybe the structural quality is good which makes it durable and expensive to build in the first place.

Interesting name for a project. Does the developer know what happened to the Old Babylon ? :poke:

Yes, they build new Babylon around it, old Babylon or better just Babylon is the black building that was already there.

nice, but why on Earth do they incorporate this "old Babylon" building into the project? It looks like something from the 70s or early 80s and should be a candidate for complete recladding or demolition IMO.

I think the contrast between the old and new style is one of the strengths of this project.
The cladding still looks good IMO. Beside that, the old Babylon had a beautyful interior. :)

De hele toren wordt getunneld, alleen op een snellere manier dan bij toren 2. Dat deze toren met prefab wordt uitgevoerd was een misverstand van iemand na het zien van een prefab binnenwandje voor 1 van de eerste verdiepingen.

Ik heb eens de tram genomen om iets dichterbij te komen, de toren is alleen al iets te groot om dan ook een goede foto ervan te maken.

This is actually the first time that I see this building with the detailed pattern-cladding. Until now, I never noticed the pattern :nuts:.

I hope that they will enlighten the towers at night.. a bit like het strijkijzer(132m)
i hope the same will happen at the ministerietowers :)

I dont even know how I missed these towers. They are great in every way, shape and form: they are simple yet not boring, and the proportions are just right. :drool: :drool: :drool:
