Whiteeclipse March 17th, 2007, 05:54 PM When will Dhaka start building a subway? icracked March 18th, 2007, 07:39 AM Hahahahaha, that would be a HUGE slap to Indonesia's face if Dhaka have operational subway before Jakarta. Same goes to Honolulu. Tmac March 18th, 2007, 07:47 AM well there is a proposal for a subway. Infact the feasibility study is also done. I think the government is waiting for funds. tanzirian March 18th, 2007, 07:57 AM Hahahahaha, that would be a HUGE slap to Indonesia's face if Dhaka have operational subway before Jakarta. Same goes to Honolulu. Well, we're not in competition with anyone, so I hope nobody thinks we're slapping them :). There is a distinct possibility that Dhaka will be the world's most populous city in a few decades, and unless we have an efficient mass transit system, there will be major negative consequences. Dhakaiya March 18th, 2007, 03:16 PM Not only a subway. Tunnels, monorails or trams, flyovers are inevitable for Dhaka in the next decade if it wants to cope with the building population pressure and construction boom. gohorns March 19th, 2007, 05:51 AM I just hope there's some sort of a masterplan developed that can be followed through no matter what government is in power. i hate it when governments come up with project and the next government comes in and scraps the old plan...resulting in a lot of waste.. Dhakaiya March 19th, 2007, 11:56 AM Well, Insha Allah no more AL or BNP :D gohorns March 19th, 2007, 07:51 PM ^^ Amen to that...and hopefully none of the corrupt hacks from those two parties either :) Insanedriver March 31st, 2007, 07:52 AM actually guys subway is not a good idea. Elevated trains are better. emergency rescues in subways proved to be more difficult wherein elevated trains, people can just jump:lol: Tmac March 31st, 2007, 08:14 AM I would prefer monorail over subway. Dhaka gets flooded every now and then. Dhakaiya March 31st, 2007, 01:50 PM You know I kinda agree with Insanedriver. Insanedriver March 31st, 2007, 02:10 PM thats the reason i think why no one built a subway in our country, instead they built elevated trains which we call, MRT and LRT Zaki March 31st, 2007, 06:26 PM I dont think Dhaka's soil can support a subway anyways. Atleast not all parts of it. I think they were always considering and elevated train but the end reslt it pretty much the same as a subway. Dhakaiya March 31st, 2007, 06:28 PM Not to mention that subway will give a rise to crime. Monorail sounds better to me, not to mention the beauty it adds to the ******* e.g. Kuala Lumpur :D gohorns March 31st, 2007, 09:44 PM I'm not a big fan of monorails/elevated trains. With the construction standards of the country and risks of tremors/earthquakes it really is not worth the risk. You guys may be right that Dhaka's soil may not be able to support a subway system, but I think that needs to be investigated further. Dhakaiya brings up a valid point about crime in the underground stations. That's bothered me too in the past with regard to an underground system. I think what's more feasible is to have the trains run at ground level where possible, i.e. where ROW (right-of-way) can be obtained and make the rest (basically older parts of the city where it's simply too dense) underground or elevated. That way, the entire system won't be vulnerable to water damage and earthquakes, it'll keep costs lower, and we'll need tight security at fewer stations. nayeem007 April 3rd, 2007, 06:23 AM Monorail or subway, there is no doubt Dhaka needs a mass transit system ASAP. We are soon going to become one of the top 5 cities in the world in terms of population, so we will need infrastructure to support that.. If we do not take urgent step, Dhaka will face an ecological disaster with influx of cars, buses emitting harmful Co2 Tmac May 10th, 2007, 11:12 PM this thread should be moved to Adda in Bangladesh sub forum. White_soX May 12th, 2007, 06:23 PM they should pour money to the urban development.............subway can come later on.....................yearsssss tanzirian May 12th, 2007, 08:33 PM they should pour money to the urban development.............subway can come later on.....................yearsssss Normally, that would be the case. But Dhaka is not your typical city. Sometimes it will take you one hour to go one mile. And that, even though only a fraction of the population owns cars. As Bangladesh develops, the number of vehicles will increase exponentially. So, it is a good idea to develop a subway before traffic reaches total gridlock. Thunderflip May 20th, 2007, 11:00 AM I don't think sub-tropical countries even need subways with the kind of weather that exists in these places. I mean it rains a lot and urban places tend to flood a lot. We should be practical with our developments and rather make things more functional. I think it would be advisable to built skytrains or metros on street level, they would work better. That's the reason why Manila and Cebu do not have any and are not even coming up with the idea of doing so. gohorns May 20th, 2007, 12:42 PM ^^ you're right..that will definitely have to be an important consideration.. any move to build something underground, as convenient as it may be in the long-run, will have to take into consideration the impact of floors and other natural disasters the country may face.. bangalore May 20th, 2007, 02:11 PM I don't think sub-tropical countries even need subways with the kind of weather that exists in these places. That's the reason why Manila and Cebu do not have any and are not even coming up with the idea of doing so. it will be better to leave such judgements to urban planners. Delhi has already got a metro that is partly underground, and it has proved many a sceptics in India very wrong - in terms of not only its functionality and use but also profitable operations. Now a number of other Indian cities are in the process of building metros including Mumbai and Bangalore. In many south Asian cities, metros will have to be undergorund, at least partially, to reduce urban displacement and chaos on the streets during construction |
