Larache

[Redalinho]

Port city located in northern Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 107,371 (2004 census). Nearby are the ruins of Lixus, a Phoenician settlement that later became a Roman colony. Larache was owned manytimes by Spain from 1610 to 1956.

En ce mois de mai, à l’intérieur des terres de la région de Larache, les moissons prometteuses sont l’occasion d’une fête qui rassemble tous les cavaliers des villages alentours. Animal de prestige, le cheval est à l’honneur : les paysans enfourchent leur monture pour faire valoir ses qualités, le temps d’un dimanche. Aucun prix ni dotation à la clef, mais la fierté !

Surgissant de l’horizon dans une prairie fleurie, des cavaliers montés à cru se livrent à des cavalcades effrénées : au nom des moissons, à la gloire du cheval. La Mata (poupée), puisque ce rendez-vous se nomme ainsi, témoigne de la vitalité de traditions dont nul à ce jour ne sait précisément d’où elles proviennent…

« Est-ce que vous avez les moyens de rattraper ce beau cheval ou ne montez-vous qu’une mule ? » s’écrie celui qui réussit à s’échapper de la meute. La provocation fait partie du jeu. Son destrier l’emporte derrière la colline, mais ses poursuivants sont à ses trousses. C’est sans coups bas que ses adversaires doivent s’emparer de la poupée. Seule compte la valeur du cheval, et si le cavalier est rejoint avant d’avoir atteint son village, il doit céder le trophée sans résister.
Ce n’est que lorsque le soleil décline, que les chevaux en sueur commencent à donner des signes de fatigue, que le plus endurant d’entre eux peut finalement se révéler et creuser l’écart avec ses poursuivants…
