Welcome to Islamabad

Islamabad C.T., Pakistan
Islamabad, Pakistan's capital, nestles against the Margala Hills, the foothills of the Himalayas in northern Punjab.Technically it is not part of Punjab, but forms its own Capital Authority. Modern, spacious and carefully planned, Islamabad is a city of wide, tree-lined streets, large houses, elegant public buildings and well organized bazars. Public metro is excellent, traffic jams and crowds are rare, and narrow lanes and slums are few and far between. Sidewalks are shaded and safe behind rows of flame trees, jacaranda and hibiscus. Roses, jasmine and bouganvillaea fill the many parks, and scenic viewpoints show the city to its best advantage.

http://flm.com.pk/images/islamabad.jpg

The decision to build Islamabad was taken in 1958 under President Ayub Khan . Karachi, the capital since Independence in 1947, and Pakistan's largest city and only busiest port, proved unsatisfactory because of its distance from many parts of the country and because of its debilitating climate. Islamabad on the other hand, offered a healthy climate, plenty of rivers and a central position on the Grand Trunk Road, close to Punjab and North-West Frontier Province. That nearby Rawalpindi, it's twin city, was the headquarters of the Pakistan army was another consideration. Finally the site had historical connections because of its proximity to nearby Taxila, for many centuries the regions main city. A Greek firm of architects, Doxiadis Associates, drew up a master plan, triangular in shape based on a grid system with its apex towards the Margala Hills. The planners envisaged Islamabad eventually absorbing Rawalpindi entirely and stretching well to the west of the GT Road.

Seems like there are some taller buildings, but they don't seem to show up on a skyline, are they all spread around the place ?

This one seems to show the best cluster of buildings. Is this the downtown area ?

http://www.skyscrapers.com/files/transfer/6/2002/06/151236.jpg

It doesn't compare well with Karachi, and it won't have any history or old buildings for interest. But a new city is a planners dream.

cntower
August 27th, 2003, 04:52 PM
It dosen't have any history cause the city is only oh 25 years old.........it's built on a grid system.

Ya i'd agree the buildings are too spaced apart; but they have zoned an area just for highrises, called the Blue Area. In 10-20 years Islamabad will have a very dense downtown core.....

No skyline here...a 3 or less for me. Again, just like the Karachi thread, this has become another collection of city pictures, as opposed to a thread about the city's 'skyline'. There are only 4 or 5 pictures of the 'skyline' here, and really its not impressive at all, at least in my opinion.

Not too bad for a smallish and newish city.....has a nice concentrated collection of buildings gathered around each other, and shows up quite a bit of potential for the future. That having been said, it doesn't rate highly at the moment because it is small and doesn't have the height yet.

Oh I get it; you just saying all that because I don't agree with your ridiculous claims about Vancouver's Waterfront right ? So what is this suppose to be payback or something? Nice try but it won't work...I still think Toronto will have a better waterfront give it a few years.;)

Whoa, I'm so impressed that this young city has a master plan. Ahem...city planners in US take hold. Lots of potential over the next 50 years. Some views reminded me of the San Fernando Valley from the 70s while the mountains also were similar to Kailua-Kaneohe, Oahu in Hawaii. That diversity is so surprising. Thank you for this thread. For now, due to the lack of many tall buildings and low density, I can only rate a 4.5. I think I'm being generous but I do like the city.

Islamabad - The Capital
http://www.islamabad.net

Islamabad (pop. 324,500), is the capital of Pakistan, just North East of it's twin city Rawalpindi, the former interim capital. Construction of Islamabad as the capital, replacing Karachi, began in the 1960s. Points of interest include Pakistan House, the Presidential Palace; the National Assembly Building; the National University, the Grand National Mosque and the Islamabad Botanical Gardens. The nearby Murree Hills also serve as a summer resort as well as summer headquarters for many diplomatic missions. Also near the city are the historical ruins of The city of Taxila.

Again this city has less than 500,000 people; it isn't great but then again isn't bad for a city which was built in the 1960s.

well, Islamabad has really nice spacious planning and alot of greenery :) but in terms of skyline its not that good. there are too few storey buildings, the skyline is only composed of less than 12 mid-rises at best with the only added bonus being the Shah Faisal Mosque's 4 minarets and high roof...

So in considering those facts, and the fact that this poll is assessed on skyline only; i give it a 4/10.. real sorry :( but Islamabad has a possible good potential for future foreign and local investment :)

Its a very small city, but its really nice.

And Pakistan has just logged on to the Skyscraper boom, and highrise are being built all over the country.

This city is getting twin towers, 32 storey's each, not very tall, but good for a small city with a population for around 250,000!!

This city is basically a diplomatic type city, you won't really find it very interesting, but if your talking about fun, you need to go to Karachi, Lahore, and other major cities.

Even Sialkot would look better than Islamabad 4 years from now! and its also a small city of around 150,000 people or so.

The land scape is around the city is good, but the skyline is almost non exist. However It looks to have potential to beoome a lot better. For right now there just isnt enough towers. Still looks like a nice place to live but since we are to rate based on the skyline I cant give it a good score.

are you people kidding me? i can't believe you've rated a city that has less than 500.000 population, and was built in the last 40 years, less than a 7! look at the city! the city is probably one of the best planned out on the whole planet, and is sooo green! :) i am very sorry for the way people voted for islamabad cntower, it isn't fair.

i say, give the city less than 10 years, and it will have an amazing skyline. no question about it. current skyline is probably one of the best for the size and population of the city...

final vote - 8/10 :)
