Ah cheers for that. Forgot about that one.

That's actually quite a lively pic. 3 people one that street is more than usual.

The Information Commons Building is a horrible design, I work about 2 minutes walk away and have to look at that monstrosity every day when I travel in.

The other University buildings around there that have recently been completed look much more impressive.

I guess the ICB building couldn't be built from mainly glazing due to the work being carried out there so they had to construct it to match (colourwise) the other buildings in the vacinity.

Good pics though Paul, I especially like the refurbished Sheaf Square, that whole area down from Sheffield Hallam is looking much better now.

It's probably the green facade that makes you hate it, or the fact that you're going to work !

Nice pic of infocomm Paul. I don't like the green at all thoough, but think a dark blue repaint makes it slightly better !

Afraid the pics arent mine. Sorry to disapoint.

To be honest, I love the ICB. Especially the green copper cladding. But people have different tastes.

Wish someone could've shown me those pics of the station 20 years ago. My jaw would have gone through the floor.

It still does, kinda.

I can't beleive some of the comments on here! I think the ICB is excellent! Different, interesting, looks good. Of course I don't have to see it everyday so maybe thats the difference.

I see it every couple of days, and I still love it!!! :colgate: Some guy on Sheffield Borum was complaining because a row of generic victorian mansions were knocked down to make room for it.

Hmm. No-one from outside of Sheffield (Damon doesn't count) has made any comments. They must all just be speachless.

I like alot of the new developments we have, especially the train station, although I would have prefered to have seen the bus station relocated closer to the train station.

I've heard other people make that complaint in the past and it's always baffled me.

You would have thought that after spending millions on the train station they could have afforded to replace the round lighting on the facade of the building.

Regarding the ICB i love the view when driving down City Road and you see this green building in the far distance.impressive.

Id say it is either Granville Road or City Road where the tram comes down. As they are the highest points round here.

It was neither it was East Bank Road after all that. Stunning views of Sheffield from the top of that area. Would not want to live there mind you.

Hahaha, not far off then. Yer I know what you mean about the area, but the best pub ever is down the road, the Earl Marshall.

April 22nd, 2007, 10:30 PM
I once saw a very strange bird outside the Earl Marshall. It was the size and shape of a magpie with a tail like a magpie's but it was sandy brown and had a bill like a parrot's. I've spent years pestering people I know as to whether they know what type of bird it was but I've never met anyone who has the slightest idea what I'm talking about. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the info.

the information commons building is awesome, and i find it really difficult to beleive that it can be classed as a monstrosity, its an excellent design.

Doom

Sorry Doom, completely wrong. The IC was designed originally in 2002 and was always going to be clad in copper and terracotta. We didn't want too much glazing because of the heat gain and the need to be as soundproof as possible. The copper on the bioincubator was put on to match the IC, not the other way round.

Hi guys just having a little poke around thought I would look at the new buildings in Sheffield.

Have to say not over excited about any of them, apart from one, the station refurb is amazing pity the modern stuff is not that great!

Well we all have our opinions and its good to hear one from outside the city. :)

I think these completed projects are the ones proposed when Sheffield was struggling economically, particularly in terms of investment, so some are a bit bland and 'safe' (you must like sinclairs though surely!).

The picture is certainly rosier now, with more exciting and speculative things happening both in terms of height and quality.

Have another 'little poke around' here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=647)

Check out city lofts tower, hancock and lant tower, velocity tower, chesham house, hanover house, digital campus etc etc

Keep looking too because things keep improving all the time :)

And also, not quite complete, but very nearly, Leopold Square:

i went in today, the workers were everywhere, still lots to do but its such an awesome little square, the seating is really cool. i went into platillos which actually opens tomorrow due to delays. but the manager gave me a tour of the place and its really good, nice interiors. large space upstairs for food and the menu isnt expensive at all :) thumbs up all round. i snapped 2 photos inside but ones a bit blurry.

anyway, heres the square:

Two new Sheffield Uni buildings:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3196/3133186654_74b6572d7b.jpg

The external area is pretty disappointing - just a sea of paving. I'd have thought a few raised planters / seats would have been useful. People do like to congregate for a smoke or chat before lectures in my experience.

On the upside there is a passageway under the green part of the building that I've never noticed before. You can just about see it above the bicycle stand on the second photo.

Kyle, sorry to be an arse, but is there any chance you could cut down the number of Digital Campus photos? They're fantastic, but they do make the thread incredibly picture heavy...
