Far from the stereotypical Cycladic image most visitors expect from Greece there are other kind of beauties our country has to offer, like the landscapes of Western Macedonia an area crossed by the Dynaric Alps that among its sightseeings has high majestic mountains, historic towns full of typical balkan architecture, lakes, endless forests and much more. Of course, don't expect to see any seashores as the closest beach is 200 kms away from here ;) .

Also, Western Macedonia is one of the areas where the first Indoeuropean Greek tribes established in Greece over 4,300 years ago!!

The climate of this huge region is Alpine in some areas and Temperate Continental in others.

And here we go, today we'll begin our journey in the city of Kastoria as well as in the homonymous prefecture:

A city located 552 kms NW from Athens. Kastoria has natural landscapes with a wonderful lake, mansions home with appreciable architecture, Byzantine monasteries, temples and museums. The Lake of Kastoria is the most precious treasure of the town. It is a jewel that both the visitors and the inhabitants can enjoy, as a place of recreation and as a stimulus for romanticism and reminiscence. At the lakeshore there are enough squares and parks. In these specially formulated spaces, the visitor has the possibility to walk on the stone pavements and to admire the unique natural beauty of the lake at all seasons. It is a hydrotope of great importance for the aquatic but also for the birds of prey and uses as an area of reproduction, nourishment and hibernation. It maintains a rich bird fauna, which includes rare and menaced species. More specifically: Pygmy Cormorant, White Pelican, Dalmatian Pelican, Great White Erget, Glossy Ibis, Goosander, Marsh Harrier, Whiskeres Tern etc.

In the lake there are great quantities of various fish species, and offers the possibility for fishing, both with the traditional boats in the deep waters and with fishing rod in the lake shores. In the lake's waters there are fishes such as Carps, butterflyfishes, Italian bleak, northern pike etc.

Temples and monasteries: Church of Taxiarches of Metropolis, Church of Agios Georgios Omorphoklisias, Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary, Agios Stefanos, Moni Panagias Kleisouras, Moni Mavriotissas.

Mansions:The mansions are building of the 17 th and 18 th century and they present great interest for their wall-building, their architecture and their painting, while they stand out for the imposing presence and the grandeur of their unusual construction like the Sapountzi's Mansion, Emmanouel Brothers' Mansion, Papia's Mansion and Skoutari's Mansion.

I presume you used Trek Earts Kastoria pictures (http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Greece/Macedonia/Kastoria/). They've disabled that option for photos from their website to be reposted into forums, so either people can just visit that link or you save them all and upload them all:p

Either way judging from those photos in Treakearth Kastoria seems like a pleasant town, somewhere you'd probably want to retreat for a few days during winter. There is some really nice folk music from that region.

We continue our journey in the prefecture of Grevena.

Its capital, Grevena city, is located 490 kms from Athens and has a population of around 40,000.

Grevena prefecture with big mountains, immense forests and abundant waters, is found in southwestern utmost Macedonia, bordering on Thessalia. It is offered for mountainous campaigns in virgin forests with firs and pines, while it is the best solution for those who want to pass their vacations with calm and relaxation.

The capital of prefecture is built in the banks of Greveniti, tributary of river Aliakmona, a region with lot of green. It has cool climate the summertime, while it can become the base for excursions in other adjacent localities. The central square of city gathers tourists, while the various shops that exist there, serve various local foods and sweets, and when somebody has appetite, we would recommend trying also the local wine of region.

Grevena prefecture have many historical bridges, works of times of Ottoman domination. All this work built up from popular self-instructive craftsmen and are worthy admiration so much for their technique as long as for the aesthetics they present. These are: Alli Pasa Bridge, the Stone Bridge and Bridges Pramoritsas, Papataki, Dasylliou, Kastrou, Spanou, Stavropotamou, Aziz-aga, Kagelia, Katsougianni, Zaka, Dotsikou, Liatissa, Portitsa, Stampeki and Matsagani. They are appreciable and it worth as many visits as you can!

Let's begin with Grevena:
