I'm with you in being an admirer of it. I always think of it as the definitive athletics stadium with its classic and simple 3-tier design.

I've always believed it to be in the 100,000 club but a quick look on Wikipedia shows its capacity to be 87,411 (although Wikipedia isn't always right!:))

That makes two of us... The 100 000 might have been Sirrajuddin ibni al Marhum's propaganda :)

its always with asian stadiums
best example is Mayday
Mayday is IMO a 90.000-100.000 seater stadium
150.000 is maybe the record

its like saying Bernabeu capacity is 130.000
or do you believe that
Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Saltlake) is a 120.000 seater :D
http://www.fussballtempel.net/afc/IND/Saltlake.html

or
Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno (Utama Senayan), Jakarta is 100.000 seater
http://www.fussballtempel.net/afc/IDN/Bung_Karno.html

by time we will learn the exact capacity
some years ago Rajamangala Stadium was listed as a 80.000 seater stadium
But it has got a capacity of "only" 65.000

Dear Sercan,

I nearly agree with you on these points, but I still have some little comments. :) Generally we can say that security and comfort standards are not everywhere the same...

from the off page
http://www.ksn.com.my/images_venues/nstad_lay_plan1.jpg
http://www.ksn.com.my/v_nationalstadium.asp

I also discovered this information about the capacity of Bukit Jalill Stadium some time ago. But what I am not sure about is if the box seats are included in this number, I don't think so. As there are big and luxurios VIP boxes as you can see on the official homepage of the stadium it would be very interesting to know how much their capacity is. I sent already several e-mails to the Stadium Management but didn't receive any reply unfortunately.

I agree with you that there aren't 150.000 seats. That's why I put this number in red on my site. The North Korean travelling agencies and other organisations claim every time this number. But I think it can only be reached by counting also people on the pitch and running track. After counting the number of rows on diverse photos an taking into account that there is not the same comfort standards as in modern stadiums in Europe or America, I think that 110.000-115.000 is a realistic number.

http://www.fussballtempel.net/afc/IND/Saltlake.html

Also on this I have some doubts, but upon request the East Bengal Football Association replied to me that this stadium has 120.000 seated capacity - What do you want to reply? I also believe, even by taking in account that there are only very little individual seats installed, that the capacity of 120.000 can only be reached by letting enter the crowd with a non-existing level of security. By respecting modern security standards it would perhaps not make more than a 80.000-90.000 capacity.

The 100.000 seemed to be correct when there were no individual seats installed on the upper tier. But now AFC informs that after renovation for AFC Cup 2007 and extending VIP areas the capacity will be 81.000 which looks very realistic to me.

There is just something coming to my mind to illustrate things like these. A nice example (even if it is the most extreme I know and I am sure Saltlake stadium wouldn't be so extreme) is the national stadium of Cameroon in Yaoundé: Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo. This stadium was listed at the end of the '90s as a 90.000 capacity stadium. God knows how they did not to have hundreds of deaths at every match. Around 2003 they reduced the capacity for security reasons under pressure of FIFA to 52.000 (officialy all seated even if no individual seats were installed except on the VIP balcony, but seats on concrete step are also seats) for international matches, but saying that for championship matches 80.000 tickets can be sold. So this clearly means the 80.000 capacity was nearly everyone standing.
But FIFA insisted and last year they had to (as they didn't want or didn't have money to install indidvidual seats) paint numbered seating places on the concrete steps and designate exit ways and some other basic security things. And do you know what now the new official (after FIFA checks) all-seated capacity is? An unbelievable 38.720!!!

So always take into account these kind of issues when comparing stadiums all around the world.

Ministry To Turn NSC Complex Into Sports City
February 24, 2009 17:12 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports hope to go ahead with its plan to turn the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil into a Sports City despite the economic crisis.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the proposal was still in the planning stage.

"We hope the Sports City will become a hub for all sports and not just a few selected sports," he told reporters after announcing the Malaysia International Sports and Trade 2009 (MISET'09) here today.

Ismail Sabri said the Ministry had earlier set up a committee to set up a Sports Museum as part of the initiative.

"The committee chairman Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad and the members are currently gathering articles or exhibits from ex-national athletes or their family members like legendary footballer, the late Mohktar Dahari to be displayed in the museum," he said.

Ismail Sabri added that a number of sports venues like the Panasonic Sports Complex (Matsushita Stadium in Shah Alam), Jalan Duta Hockey Stadium and the Jalan Duta National Tennis Centre would also come under the purview of the Ministry from March 1.

"In future, the Ministry will solely manage and administer all sports complexes while the National Sports Council's role will be to train athletes while the National Sports Institute takes charge of sports science," he said.

The idea of setting up a Sports City was mooted during the National Sports Convention held in November last year but the Ministry has yet to determine the budget for the purpose, he said.

Meanwhile, the two-day inaugural MISET to be held on June 26-27 and organised by the GK Group and the Malaysian Athletes Welfare Foundation, would see more than 30 countries exhibit and promote high quality and state-of-the-art sports equipment.

"Through the exhibition, Malaysia will become a hub for sports facilities and research, especially with the involvement of universities," he said.

The Bukit Jalil Stadium would make a great Olympic Stadium (but Kuala Lumpur may need to host the Asian Games before it hosts the Olympics). And does the Bukit Jalil Stadium needs any renovations (i.e. an exterior facade) or is it fine the way it is?

Man U was touring all Asia for their friendly match. I think at the same time, while Man U vs Malaysia, Liverpool was having their friendly match with Singapore.

Generally, majority of South East Asia people is big fan of Man U, Liverpool and Chelsea....thus it not uncommon to see these big clubs having a friendly match with host nation and get to see their fans too....they also did some charity works during their stay. :)

Setting Up Sports City, University Among Main Topics At National Sports Convention

KUALA LUMPUR, -- The setting up of a sports university and the transformation of the National Sports Complex (NSC) into a Sports City were among resolutions put forward during the National Sports Convention that ended at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here Wednesday.

Although there were mixed reactions from the 250 participants for the setting of a sports university, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob did not discard the prospect of such a university in the future.

"The setting up of a sports university may become a reality in 10 years because many aspects need to be taken into account as it involves various ministries," he said.

According to Ismail Sabri his ministry would now concentrate on setting up more sports schools with the main objective being the setting up of a sports school in every state.

Currently there are two sports schools in the country, namely the Bukit Jalil Sports School and the Bandar Penawar Sports School in Johor.

He added that the setting up of a sports university would come under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry and certainly lead to a question of autonomy, based on what had been experienced in the setting up of sports schools.

In the two sports schools, the academic aspect comes under the purview of the Education Ministry while the sports activities are handled by the Ministry of Youth and Sports through the National Sports Council.

The contention among participants during the convention was whether academic excellence would take precedence over sports or the other way round.

Some participants feared that the same predicament would befall once the sports university was set up.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) vice president Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad suggested that the Youth and Sports Ministry can adopt a similar approach to that of the Royal Military College (RMC) in Sungai Besi whereby the Defence Ministry takes full responsibility of the administration while the academic part comes under the Education Ministry.

"Since RMC comes under the Defence Ministry, an army-styled culture is adopted but they also excel in academic qualifications and when the Ministry of Youth and Sports sets up a sports university, it should follow a similar module," said Dr Ibrahim.

On a proposal to re-model the NSC as a Sports City, Ismail Sabri said the matter would soon become a reality as the Cabinet had last month approved a proposal to acquire land around the NSC for development.

The Ministry would set up a Sports Muzium and commercial stalls at vacant locations at stadiums situated in Bukit Jalil, he said.

"Upon completion, the area will become a one stop Sports City centre for all sporting activities," he said.

Another important topic discussed at the convention was the importance of applying sports science in training at the grassroots and putting in place a comprehensive welfare scheme that would benefit competitive athletes or those who retire.

All resolutions at the second convention and those from the first convention in Langkawi held in 1996 would be incorporated into the National Sports Policy that was currently being updated.

officiating of the Malaysian Sports Industry Convention 2009 in Kuala Lumpur today.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — In announcing that Kuala Lumpur will bid to host the 2019 Asian Games, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek declared that the Asian Games is more prestigious than the Commonwealth Games.

“Malaysia has the experience to host world-class games like when we hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998. I believe with that experience Malaysia can host the Asian Games, which is the more prestigious of the two,” he told reporters here today.

Ahmad Shabery said his ministry would inform the Cabinet about the intention to get its approval for the bid.

He said this after attending the officiating of the Malaysian Sports Industry Convention 2009 which was done by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak here today.

He said the various international standard sports facilities at the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex will also be a basis for the bid process.

He hoped that all quarters would come together and cooperate with the government to ensure that Malaysia won the bid to bring the games to Kuala Lumpur.

The 2010 Asian Games will be held in Guangzhou, China and the 2014 games in Incheon, South Korea.

On another development, Ahmad Shabery said the area around the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil will be developed into a one-stop centre for all sports activities including having stores that sold sports equipment.

“The ministry has appointed a consultant to study the proposal to make the sports complex area a sports city,” he said.

Kuala Lumpur had previously bid to host the 2006 Asian Games but narrowly lost in the last hurdle to the city of Doha, in Qatar, amid accusations of underhanded tactics used by the Arab nation in securing votes from member countries. – Bernama

MAS flies Chelsea team during Asian tour
Posted on July 7, 2011, Thursday
http://www.theborneopost.com/2011/07/07/mas-flies-chelsea-team-during-asian-tour/

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will be flying the English Premier League team, Chelsea, from London to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hong Kong, with its air charter carrier service during the football club’s Asia tour.

MAS managing director and chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin said this would be the second time MAS would be providing air transportation for Chelsea.

“This time we are customising and tailoring our total service delivery with our Branded Customer Experience proposition,” he said in his speech during the signing of a charter agreement between
MAS and ProEvents,
the sole and exclusive promoter for the tour, here yesterday.

For instance, the food and beverages to be prepared for serving on board would be done in consultation with the teams’ nutritionists.

“For inflight comfort, our specially selected cabin crew are trained to ensure the players are assured of their privacy and are
well rested upon arrival at their destination,” he added.

Other significant arrangements for the footballers are fast-tracked check-in for departures, exclusive holding lounges prior boarding, exclusive inflight entertainment programmes, specially made inflight seat headrests with the Asia Tour 2011 insignia, speedier immigration clearance and seamless baggage restoration on arrival at each of Asian city on tour.

Meanwhile, ProEvents chief executive officer Julian Kam said Chelsea’s senior management, the new manager and his colleagues as well as the full first team squad will be flying with MAS throughout their tour in Asia.

“Air charter is a key component of the tour as we have to ensure all our guests are well looked after by experienced airline staff,” he said.

The charter agreement was signed by MAS’ Vice President of Commercial Strategy Datuk Dr Amin Khan and ProEvents Managing Director San Boon Wah.

Tengku Azmil and Football Association of Malaysia Secretary General Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad witnessed the signing.

Chelsea will take a friendly match against Malaysia at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on July 21. — Bernama

Plans afoot to turn Bukit Jalil Sports Complex into merchandise centre
By EUGENE MAHALINGAM Friday July 29, 2011
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/7/29/business/9198030&sec=business#13119087895511&if_height=592

KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry plans to transform the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex into a “sports city” where it can become a one-stop centre for sports merchandise.

“We have presented this idea to the EPU (Economic Planning Unit),” said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

“The Bukit Jalil Sports Complex can be a profitable one-stop sports centre. We intend to use it as a model and if it is successful, we would like to replicate it in other states as well,” he said after the launch of the Sports Industry Year 2011/12 here yesterday.

e Bukit Jalil Sports Complex includes the National Stadium, Putra Stadium, National Aquatics Centre, National Squash Centre, National Hockey Stadium and is home to both the National Sports Institute and National Sports Council.

Ahmad Shabery pointed out that in popular venues such as the Barclays Premier League team Manchester United's home ground of Old Trafford, there were ample outlets to purchase the team's products and memorabilia but this was not the case in local stadiums, such as the National Stadium at Bukit Jalil.

“The stadium itself should become a profit centre,” he said.

On sports as a sector and contributor to the local economy, Ahmad Shabery said the Malaysian sports industry had contributed RM30.2bil to gross domestic product (GDP) in 2009.

“However, Malaysia's sports industry has yet to be accepted as one of the nation's National Key Economic Areas. The ministry believes in the importance or potential of sports as an industry.

“The ministry has embarked on a number of initiatives to make this a reality and to turn Malaysia's sports industry as a major contributor to Gross National Income.

“This, in turn, will help fulfil the Economic Transformation Programme target of a high-income nation by 2020,” said Ahmad Shabery.

Sports Industry Year 2011/12 is a one-year campaign that runs until July 27. It is aimed at identifying high growth opportunities in the sports industry, targeting expansion and investment as well as establish the sports industry as one of the major contributors towards the Malaysian economy.

I visited Bukit Jalil two weeks ago with Chelsea and was really impressed with its setting and size.

Unfortunately, I had seats in the middle tier unreserved seating section and spectators were sitting in the aisles and standing up by the front of the tier making it all very cramped and made viewing diifficult.

Still a great experience, though.
