But in L.A.?
Yes, its true. They've got 12 of 'em since "Famima!!" started its first location in downtown L.A. in 2004. Call it a convenience store with a twist because these stores carry more than just specialty groceries and deli. They have video game rentals, copy machines, stationaries, pastries, and Japanese deserts. Its is claimed to be a “nirvana” destination for “hipsters” according to Wired Magazine. Its parent company includes FamilyMart of Japan which has stores all over Asia. I'd like to see one (or more) in downtown Seattle and can imagine the popularity of these hip convenience stores. We already have Westlake Specialty Grocery and West End mini specialty grocery stores in downtown, and I think we can always use more of these tiny "con-vee" (as they pronounce it in Japan) in Seattle to serve the growing downtown population. Though they maybe a bit pricey compare to Safeway, but I think they can serve the downtown population the most adequately with its small storefronts in numerous walkable distances versus driving in a dense city setting. Besides, if you do live in downtown, chances are that you won't have the storage space for the Costco runs. We probably would never achieve the density they have in Tokyo, but its nice to dream about such metropolitan amenity. But hey, like I say, they have it in downtown L.A...why couldn't we?
In the mean time, some eye candy for you all.
