Golfing Holidays at The Coast

http://www.bdafrica.com/images/stories/Sports/bd-Golf3.jpg

March 14, 2008: The weather is warm, with a cold breeze from the ocean. The thirst-quenching cocktail is chilled just the way you like it.

The breath-taking panorama of the never-ending sun and sand and the perfect view of the sapphire Indian Ocean are no doubt an ideal way to wind down.
The brilliant white Coastal tropical beaches await you this Easter holiday.

Nothing beats lying down under a palm tree, with the sun setting directly in front of the bay caressing you to sleep. How about adding this thrilling swing to your itinerary?

If a challenging 18-hole course makes your adrenaline charge, take a pick from the north or south Coast, which hosts Nyali Golf & Country Club and the Leisure Lodge Golf Club respectively.

Located about nine kilometres from Mombasa Airport, Nyali Golf and Country Club’ is the oldest 18 holes golf course on Kenya’s coast. It is a gently rolling course with a decent mixture of right and left doglegs and shallow fairway bushes.

The course is not short of adventure. The type of grass used on the green makes it fast. Parting the ball may require less weight and this poses a unique challenge to golfers. Golf buffs are also put to test due to the wind factor, as they play against it.

Musa Odada, managing director Nyali Golf, said the most difficult hole is the index one, the first hole, as well as the front nine – the first nine holes in an eighteen course. The remaining nine holes – back nine, part of the par-5 and par-4 have proved to be problematic for many golfers.

The 160 acres of land has a fantastic course layout, with the sea breeze cooling off the golfer. There is also abundant wildlife including vervet monkeys and dik diks.

In between swings one can enjoy some Italian cuisine at the II Duetto restaurant. Green fees vary. Kenya Golf Union members pay Sh1,400 while non members pay Sh2,400 during the weekdays and an additional Sh200 on weekends. In addition, a caddie is available for Sh350 for the entire course layout.

Golfing is not the only activity as one can enjoy some squash, tennis and swimming. Just an hour’s drive from Mombasa city, but a few minutes from the nearby Ukunda airstrip, down South Coast in Diani, sits one of the one of the most modern but also challenging 18 holes courses in Kenya.

With its American style bunkers, country club grasses imported from South Africa for the fairways, and two water feature holes, the feeling is of seventh heaven.

It is said the course is not for the weak hearted, for one reason— the finishing hole is a 547 yard par five dogleg, with a lake with live crocodiles planned for it. It also has tight fairways.

The water hazards as well as slow greens make putting a tricky affair , requiring careful calculation. The principal challenges for most golfers here are the winds and coping with the humidity.

Perhaps the most interesting and scenic hole at Leisure is the par-3 fifteenth where the tee shot into a cross or head wind must carry the lake. The pro shop is fully equipped, with golf carts available for the players.

One can opt for Italian or sea foods While at it, children can have their own fun in the all exclusive play pen. If tired of swinging, windsurfing may be just the perfect substitute.

For the Easter packages, there will be a 50 per cent off the green frees on the championship golf course. Also on offer are two nights on half board basis, return air tickets on Kenya Airways with tax and return airport transfers. Services at their Urembo hair & beauty salon will attract a 25 per cent discount.
The beauty of all golf clubs in the country is that any time is tee time; no booking is needed for the course.

Right in the heart of the busy city is Mombasa Golf Club, the oldest course in the country. The nine-holes started in 1911 has eight greens and is surrounded by a beautiful coral reef with powdery white sand beach.

The front course is the most interesting to play, especially because of the surrounding Indian Ocean. Another activity that one can indulge in while at Mombasa Golf Club other than golfing is snookering.

Naomi Ruwa, the golf manager said green fees Sh1,500 while caddie charge is Sh350. However, one has to carry his own gear since there is no pro -shop at Mombasa Golf.

For those who prefer snooker or to play tennis in between the swings, Malindi Golf Club may be an option. At the North Coast, some 117 kilometres from Mombasa, Malindi Golf Club is an unusual nine hole with 15 tee course spreads out on 133 acres of land. The rate for green fees is Sh2,000 while cadres go for 150. There are various facilities provided by the club for its members.

These include darts and a luxurious bar.

Adventure in the wild at Samburu Reserve

http://www.bdafrica.com/images/stories/Tourism/bd-Camping-Outdoor-Maasai_Mara.jpg

Perfect getaway for lovers of the outdoors at the Mara Game Reserve: Kenya has many underexplored tourism and travel attractions.

March 14, 2008: Looking for a wilderness getaway, away from the beach, mountain and cities?

A safari to Samburu National Reserve could be the answer this Easter. Located six hours from Nairobi by road and an hour by air, Samburu remains one of the under explored game reserves despite variety of game, fauna and culture it offers.

The reserve has one major feature working for it — the Ewaso Nyiro River which divides Samburu National Reserve from Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Along it one gets to enjoy most of the game in the reserve as animals drink from the brown river— as its name means.

In the heart of the reserve is a quiet camp that has gained international recognition due to its ambiance, facility and customer service — the Larsens Camp. Owned by Wilderness Lodges, the company that took over the facility as well as two others from Block Hotels in 2003, Larsens Camp boasts 20 exclusive tents.

Here one gets to enjoy exclusive accommodation in the spacious tents which have wooden furniture, locally hand made cushions and carpets. Guests can sit at their verandahs as they view game and bird life along the river as all tents face the Ewaso Nyiro.

Towards the end of last year the Wilderness Lodges decided to add the activities available by opening a spa. Here guest can get their backs massaged, finger nails pampered or body wraps as they enjoy the view and game.

Named after Erik ole Larsen, a legendary Dane credited with defining the luxury safari under canvas, Larsens was recently recognised by the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH).

SLH is a collection of over 400 hotels in various parts of the world which together offer a variety. It identifies exclusive small luxury outlets and markets them .

This has worked for the camp, according to Ms Shikha Nayar, Wilderness Lodges business developer, the recognition has been good for the camp as they have received more enquiries about it.

“We are now working at ensuring Kenyans know about the camp and have been driving a marketing campaigns, including participating in fairs to ensure this,” she says.

Reserve special packages are on offer until the end of June. Travellers can also enjoy the Samburu Game lodge along the river should Larsens be fully booked over Easter. Owned by the same company it is much bigger with 61 units and similar hospitality.

Other than the Wilderness Lodges one can enjoy the richness of the reserve from the Samburu Serena Safari Lodge, Sopa Lodge, and Atua Enkop, among others. The reserve also has camping areas.

Established in the 1970s, Samburu National Reserve boasts rare species of animals like the Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich and Beisa Oryx.

The Ewaso Nyiro flows from the highlands into the Loriam Swamp creating a lifeline for many communities found along the way. The river, which gets its supply of water from the glaciers on Mount Kenya, can be used for canoeing although some areas are infested with crocodiles.

The river is the basis of the reserves eco-system and attraction as it draws a wide range of animals that are the main tourist attraction in both reserves. They are part of the northern tourist circuit.

Nairobi Has Alot To Offer

March 14, 2008: If your idea of a holiday this Easter is something different, fun-filled yet in a serene milieu, Brackenhurst International Conference Centre may be just the perfect pick.

You will put your body and mind to test and love it as you enjoy a relaxing ambiance. You will overcome your fear for heights; make heavy mental calculations and explore your body limits. In the hills of Tigoni, in Limuru, team building is the buzz word. And eight is the minimum number of people for every group.

On the list of options, are high ropes courses, about 40 feet above the ground. The deal here is to walk on the rope which is about 6 meters long. If you can dare the rope, there is the log option.

Either way, it takes a dauntless personality to try out the experience. And if you thought you do not have fear of heights, well think again.
The big swing, where one swings across the valley some 20 feet across will definitely charge your adrenaline.

At Brackenhurst, improvised rocks constructed on walls with varying endurance ability can still give you same amount of thrill and adventure. For mental agility and probe on your teamwork ability, various small tasks requiring the groups’ efforts will be good way to unwind.

In light of the Easter season, various programmes will be drawn on prior arrangement, and tailor made to suit the group where seminars and counselling sessions may be offered. For instance several couples can gang up for one day, or half day seminar on marriage.

Once exhausted a walk will do just fine, on the two kilometre trail, where you can watch over 15 species of birds and 600 species of indigenous trees.

Accommodation is available in single or double cottages. There is a special discount of 25 per cent for Easter, and it will takes a 30 minutes drive from Nairobi city centre.

Further information: Call Brackenhurst on 201 40 92/3 or 0724 256 721 or info@brackenhurst.com

Nairobi National Park

Located just a few kilometres from the city centre, the Nairobi National Park is ideal for a short breakaway.

One can enjoy one of the few protected areas within the city by driving into the park and enjoying the rich variety of wildlife and bird life the park boasts. This is one of the few protected areas within a city that is easily accessible for those not wishing to drive far from their homes.

Nairobi National Park is found along the Langata highway, though one can access it along various gates on the way to Rongai or Mombasa road.

It is one of the most successful rhino sanctuaries in the country. Here you can be sure to spot at least a giraffe, zebra and black rhino.

Lions, leopards and can also be found roaming the plains of the park, though one should be cautious of the ever cheeky monkey or baboon.

However, some of the wildlife is migratory and might not be found until a later date. Up to 400 various species of bird life have been seen at this park making it ideal for bird watchers.

The park offers six picnic sites where families can enjoy a meal as they look at the skyscrapers that are visible from the park.
The park offers an affordable holiday with adults only paying Sh200 while children will pay Sh100, with a student card it only costs Sh50

National Museum

Located proximally within the city centre on the way to Westlands ia another great attraction. This is the Nairobi National Museum located at the Museum Hill.

At the gate, you are met by some cheerful primates that usher you into the place where the story of mankind, among other pieces, is told.

Further ahead, there are some larger-than-life sculptures: one of a dinosaur, another of a woman holding her baby.

For those who may not be interested in the content packed inside the exhibition halls, the museum still offers a perfect place to interact with life. On the breezy compound well laid out for those who come here to rest are several artistic pieces that add life to the place.

The well ventilated compound with its magnificent architecture is also something to behold.

Inside the museum are four halls open to the public. Hall of Kenya presents Kenya’s diverse heritage depicted through nature, cultures and histories of the different communities that constitute the nation. This is captured through iconic objects collected from across the country, photography and even realistic paintings that easily appeal to the senses. Then there is the great hall of mammals where you get to understand the evolutionary history of this group.

Cradle of the humankind gallery is one of the biggest attractions the Nairobi museum offers to the world. Here, you get face to face with fossils that have been on earth for over millions of years. The original fossil of humankind is also in this collection.

Besides these collections, there is also opportunity to mingle with reptiles at the snake park that neighbours the museum. Here, snakes and even crocodiles while their time away. Feeding sessions are a big attraction.

Those who love expressing their feelings in the open — through song, dance and even otherwise— have a good opportunity on the open air spaces. There is also the opportunity to get intimate as you sip coffee in the Rangi Rangi Restaurant.

Charges: Sh100 adults, Sh50 children
Other East African residents: Adults Sh400, Children Sh200
None East African –Adults 800, children 400.

Twende Nyama Choma

Year after year the Carnivore Restaurant has been voted as one of the top 50 best restaurants in the world. Carnivore offers the ultimate barbeque experience.

From the usual beef, to lamb chops, pork and game meat; one gets to savour various game meat. Here, you get to taste giraffe, gnu, zebra, crocodile, hartebeest and even ostrich meat. And don’t forget the ever important flag.

It signals the start and end of the mouth watering experience. As long as the flag is up, the waiters will be at your table waving huge Maasai spears with chunks of meat spilling their delicious looking juices.

The meat comes in two broad varieties; flame-licked or scorched and raw. But if cannot stomach that, the waiter will return the meat to the barbecue and cook it for a little longer.

Found within Nairobi it takes less than thirty minutes to get there so why not treat family, friends and loved ones to a mouth watering experience.
For lunch, spare Sh1,792, while dinner will require Sh1,984, inclusive of a starter, salads, side dishes, sauces, and dessert. This is a good option for people who don’t want to do much travelling.

Ngong Hills

Ngong Hills
The breathtaking bravura of the sun sets on the Ngong hills is an amazing option to tear away the flesh from the bone at the Whistling thorns. An hour’s drive from the capital to Kiserean, and a further two kilometres to the bush, Whistling Thorns rests in the heart of the savannah south of Nairobi National Park that stretches across into Tanzania. If whole goat does it for you, you will part with Sh5,900.

As you await for the barbeque you can enjoy a swim, walks, horse riding, pony rides and there’s the golf driving range. The beauty with Whistling Thorns is that if a one day affair is not your kind, accommodation is offered in either cottages or simply camp for about Sh4,000.

Yeah, it's true. If you look at the map of Kenya, it carves of around Mt. Kilimanjaro. Queen Victoria gave it away to some prince (can't remember his name) who happened to be her nephew or something like that. Just google it. But yes, it is true. Dang, Kenya would definitely have had the lions share of natural beauty had Kilimanjaro remained in Kenya's possession. Either way, I still claim it.

Nyeri, Central Province.

This is the provincial capital of Central province. Its 180 Km north of Nairobi and is the 7th largest town with a population of 150,000. It is the hometown of Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai, president Kibaki, athletic star Catherine Ndereba and freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi. The founder of the scouting movement, Lord Baden Powell, is buried here.

Is that a lake drying up?

During the dry season, the lake is 80% covered by soda....

The lake water, which is a dense sodium carbonate brine, precipitates vast quanitites of the mineral trona (sodium sesquicarbonate). In places, the salt is up to 40 m thick.

^^ I agree... the road is rubbish... very easy to have accidents, you cant even overtake easily.

Kenya needs to invest on a proper highway from Kampala to Mombasa:ohno:

i second that. a proper highway system connecting the major cities in east africa is really needed.

The photo of matatus in Nairobi is mine, and is being loaded off my web server. While I don't mind people showing my photo in other places, I am very annoyed that someone just placed it on a page here without any hint that it's mine, any link back to me, or any attempt to contact me about it. That's quite rude.

Here's the page with some of my photos from Kenya from my old web site (that I no longer maintain, but haven't taken down):
http://cos.polyamory.org/pictures/kenya.html

The photo of matatus is from that page.

Luckily in Nairobi you can take the more formal buses (Citi Hoppa/ KBS) if you arent really comfortable with the pimped out matatu's. Those matatus are like clubs on wheels and are pretty cool inside as well.

Yeah! If you are famous, your face will definitely find its way on a matatu. The matatu artwork is one of the most prominent art displays of Kenyan public opinion.

Kenya is blessed with limitless natural beauty! I simply love it. It has diverse landscapes.

It is one of those places I gotta see before I die.

I guess thats why I love taking bus rides in Kenya. The scenery changes from time to time with different farms, cities, towns and landscapes.

Well, there days are numbered because they are not included in the Nairobi Metro Master Plan. According to the plan, they are to phased out especially the 14 seater vans. The bigger ones may be forced to operate from the periphery of the city (But even the ones marked to operate in the periphery are the likes of Double M, Citty Hoppa & KBS). They are planning to introduce the Bus Rapid Transit and other modern of transportation like light rails. However I think they will start with BRT because its cheaper and progress to the other modes with time.

I like the art in those Matatus but sometimes the music can be too loud. For me it will good riddance as the operators of those Matatus are way too rude and uncouth.

Love the art love the music and live th ein your face culture. this is what makes nairobi nairobi. i hope by god nairobi never looses its chaotic atmosphere as this is what makes it so cool.

Tourists dont come to kenya to see nairobi, they come for safari and mombasa. nairobi is a kenyans city and hope it doesnt conform to some international blueprint.

its simple, u dont like the music and the art, take citi hopper or KBS or any of that other boring stuff. i for one love matatus, its what i grew up with on jogoo road. i think that the descision to take them off CBD streets was a great idea. i cant imagine nairobi without these rides and honestly i dont see matatus fading anytime soon. remember all those rules that have been introduced inorder to scrap out the matatu culture and everytime matatus come out stronger and more pimped out, also as long as people are willing to wait for 30 mins just to get into the most pimped out ride, matatus will NEVER die. michuki came out with that yellow line crap, what happened to it?
