Elektro-X March 28th, 2007, 08:49 PM I usually have kinda mixed feelings when it comes to re-designing original buildings, but in this particular case... Good work!
JBCousin March 28th, 2007, 09:49 PM CB31 will be metamorphosed ! This project is a formidable technical prowess for bouygues construction. Indeed, the core will be rebuilt by the top !!
LLoydGeorge March 28th, 2007, 10:23 PM Beautiful!
Dan1987 March 28th, 2007, 11:06 PM Although an amazing reclad and definitely needed transformation, I can't help but criticise the architects for using similar architecture for both this tower and the Bishopsgate Tower in London. I'm not saying Paris is copying London at all, I just think the architects are being lazy. Shame on you KPF
Newcastle Guy March 28th, 2007, 11:07 PM ^^ I noticed that, but I didn't notice that the architects are the same.

Sadly, this is far from being the only case.
Globalisation is also touching architecture, and what makes our cities different from one another is getting lower and lower... :(
tinou March 29th, 2007, 12:36 AM true, most of the claddings in the world seem to be quite the same...I mean like 10 different kinds...
Mplsuptown March 29th, 2007, 01:35 AM Looks like a pretty cool remake. The tower that is.
AMS guy March 29th, 2007, 03:02 AM I wouldn't say that AXA is going to look like Bishopsgate. It will look more like that new tower in Brussels - Dexia bank or something.
TYW March 29th, 2007, 08:24 AM that's gotta be the best refurbishment of any skyscraper i've ever seen
brunob March 29th, 2007, 10:26 AM I think we all agree on that point. I very much look forward to construction pictures, this is going to be a very interesting one to watch its metamorphosis.
Brad March 29th, 2007, 09:34 PM Good knews, this is really what La Defence needs to become a 21st century skyscraper cluster in Europe.
brisavoine April 9th, 2007, 01:57 PM Now that the reconstruction of Axa Tower has officially started, here's a brief timeline and pictures of construction.
Official building permit issued last summer:

Axa moves out:
AXA Insurance quietly vacated their namesake tower in La Défense last November, in one of the largest and swiftest company headquarters move ever (for France at least).
The move lasted from Thursday November 23 to Tuesday November 28 and saw the relocation of 3,200 AXA headquarter employees from the 159 m (522 ft) AXA Tower to AXA's new mid-rise headquarters located behind the Grand Arche. The 5-day headquarters relocation required the help of 300 movers and a total of 650 trips in moving vans.

Reconstruction starts:
Work started in the beginning of March. Currently, it consists essentially in removing asbestos from the tower. This will last until the end of June. The reconstruction proper should then start with a full decladding of the tower. Reconstruction is expected to take 28 months. The central core of the tower will be entirely rebuilt, perhaps starting with the top. Underpinning with 10 meters (33 ft) thick beams will take place to withstand the tower's added weight. Bouygues is planning to use hydrocutting to preserve the steal of the reinforced concrete.

Sentient Seas May 2nd, 2007, 01:01 AM Looks like an improvement to me. The old one looked very... 70's.
Minato ku May 2nd, 2007, 01:49 AM Of course the old one was inaugurated in 1974. :)
Sentient Seas May 2nd, 2007, 01:53 AM Yeah you can usually tell what's from the 70's, not just buildings, everything has a different vibe so to say...
To get to the point, the old one looked ugly as hell, the new one looks great.
jorgen May 2nd, 2007, 02:49 PM Amazing refurbishment :)
Its design is unique and really nice. I like it a lot.
AngrySlob May 2nd, 2007, 05:09 PM It's a really nice building, but someone deserves a slap for the similarity to The Pinnacle. It looks like it's the same tower an extra side bit attached. Still really nice though.

Jim856796 September 4th, 2007, 02:16 AM Do the reconstruction plans of the AXA Tower include demolishing the upper 5 floors of a wing of the tower?
Metropolitan September 4th, 2007, 02:27 AM Do the reconstruction plans of the AXA Tower include demolishing the upper 5 floors of a wing of the tower?Yes, partially. The building is in 3 wings. The top of the southern wing will be slightly demolished to make appear a sloping roof on 5 floors, the top of Northeast wing will be slightly heightened with another sloping roof on 5 floors, and the Northwest wing will be heightened even more. As a result, the three wings, which currently ends at the same height, will all end at a different height.
Here is the scheme from Angelius which pictures well the nature of the visual changes on the structure:

wazcaster November 3rd, 2008, 03:12 PM Shame. I preferred it as it was. The render of the renovated tower makes it look so generic, although I can't fault a height increase.
skyboi November 3rd, 2008, 04:34 PM The new cladding and shape of this tower will be fresh and modern , so glad to see it being renovated , the best skylines of EU so far , I love the density of LD , waiting to see a few 300m towers in the future !

qzzq December 16th, 2008, 12:44 AM ^Great updates, thanks.
I'm not quite sure about the new design though. From some angles it looks awesome, from others less so. Certainly not bad though, not bad at all.
Jim856796 January 7th, 2009, 07:04 AM I looked at the tower's French Wikipedia article and the Tour AXA had been given a new name as of September 2008: the Tour First. Is this news even true?
Aemilia January 7th, 2009, 01:42 PM yes it's true for the moment
pokistic January 7th, 2009, 04:41 PM I don't like these recladings. I wish we can keep those old towers. But anyway the new building is awesome though.

bkzinho February 20th, 2009, 01:14 PM Yes it will be higher, the first roof you can see taking shape is only the lower. The tower will 225m at final.
Jim856796 March 20th, 2009, 01:03 PM According to the most recent photos, the old cladding has been taken down in full and the floorplates of the original portion of the original tower may have been increased slightly. I don't know when the new cladding will be installed, that will probably happen when the skeleton of the reconstructed tower is completed.

Though looking at the renders, it seems this particular cladding won't cover the whole building, and will only cover certain parts.

Yes, it seems that the 'main' cladding will recall the triangular pattern of the top.

Some pictures I have taken of the tower, and of the view from the 49th floor (last floor and still under construction)
A great visit !

I don't think so. From what I've read before it still has a long way to go before it tops out.

Yes, I understood it. That's why I said «I don't think so».

190 meters , more or less .
So this tower is not really the tallest in la defense yet .

Jim856796 August 8th, 2009, 12:24 AM The CB21 Tower in one of the photos is being renovated into a HGE (France's version of LEED) -certified green building without any height extensions. The project to extend the height to 275 metres has been abandoned.
Sacré Coeur August 8th, 2009, 01:19 AM Is it the tallest in la Defence already?
It's currently the tallest tower in La Défense. We don't really know the height exactly but it's around 200m right now. Total Tower, which used to be the tallest, is 190m high.

It's very good for the skyline that you'll get a new dominant. Unfortunately, not much higher, but it will definately improve the skyline of la Defense with its interesting top.

kony September 5th, 2009, 09:37 AM ^^ I think that tittle is going to Moscow once the IBC is complete
that may be true but when i look at today's banner, i wonder...
is Moscow's skyline all about Moscow City ? coz if yes, then i would say 6 towers does not necesarily make Europe's best skyline...even if you have the tallest...
I mean Moscow city is kinda new when La Defense is 50 yeers old and quite dense with more than 30 towers.
I don't mean to put down Moscow : what i see is a clearly nice skyline but not so dense...So Frankfrurt, Paris and London are still very there

Manitopiaaa January 10th, 2010, 12:01 AM I never really liked La Defense. I hate it when older cities try to gain a modern skyline. It always thought it clashed. One of the pics above changed my mind. La Defense and Paris look perfect together. Congrats on the building!
Mehdi69100 January 10th, 2010, 05:19 PM A nice design indeed although the actual cladding disappointed many. Good for La Defense to get something else than a flat roof.

paujuu January 20th, 2010, 04:44 AM depends, I personally hated the whole design at the beginning and thought they better stayed with the old one, but after the part of cladding has been installed I'm really starting to like the whole project

steppenwolf January 20th, 2010, 04:54 PM what an exciting 'reclad' I cant think of many towers that have had an height increase to almost double their original height. the possibility must have been designed into the original building

CultureOfCongestion February 10th, 2010, 11:54 AM what an exciting 'reclad' I cant think of many towers that have had an height increase to almost double their original height. the possibility must have been designed into the original building
It wasn't! they have made many structural reinforcements in order to support the aditional 20.000 tons and to prevent the tower to twist on itself and down, as its mass is shifted on one wing (the elevated one), it moves the center of gravity and with the elasticity of the concrete the tower structure can theoretically react like this.
In the foundations they added 1 meters thick and 15 meters high concrete walls. Also the walls of the core were thickened by 20cm, and to avoid "layering effect", that is to say a sliding motion between the two layers, these have been secured by imposing steel hooks, sealed in the original layer.
QuarterMileSidewalk February 11th, 2010, 05:00 AM ^^Fascinating! It had never occurred to me just how much would have to be done to the existing structure to prepare it for the addition.
