7/10 it was looking ok, with the facade, until the antenna showed up

It has some nice colours and a shiny facade...but the design is not that intresting.

Yes, if you've been to Times Square and have seen the Virgin Mega Store, the store is actually part of the building. This picture should make it more clear:

Yeah i have been there,even in the store.I even bought the new album of Snoop Dogg there.Just didn't knew if it was this tower where i bought it.

Sorry, but this thing gets only a 6.0 from me. It tries to appear "interesting," but once again and true to my impression of having seen other examples of their oeuvre, SOM come across as contrived and boring.

One of SOMs masterpieces.. IMO.. The glass is fantastic! The overall shape is good too. I like how the "blacker" part of the facade contrasts its whiter counterpart.. :guns1:

savethewtc, re the virgin records store, is this a new one because i remember going to one in times square and it didn't seem that big....

in comparison hmv and virgin in london both seemed roughly the same size.... tower records in shibuya is also huge.

i thought the bertlesmen tower was good but looked rather lost, like a kid whose got his a shoe on the wrong way round. its not completely convincing, but at least its different.

i prefer the reuters building and the ernst and young tower....conde nast is also good.

I like the colors of the glass. I think that it looks pretty cool. I don't think that the antenna is THAT bad! 8.0/10

the design is unique for NYC, and it marked a rejuvination of times square

7/10 for trend setting, was one of the first new breed of skyscrapers in NYC and signaled a final farewell to the international style

The shape is quite good (especially seen side-on), but the facade doesn't really do anything for me.

It's in a fantastic location though, and the advertising around the base is funky.

6.5/10 - It has a nice, shiny glass curtain wall facade, I appreciate the use of something resembling set backs to make it less blocky and monotonous, especially that trinagular section below the spire, and the multi-colored spandrels provide a bit of contrast...

BUT

The *ahem* spire, with all that awkward jungle-gym business around it, doesn't flow that well from the rest of the building; it looks like it was slapped on as an afterthought, and maybe not even finished - did someone run out of money, I wonder?

9/10. Love the colors on it. i remember when i was younger that i could never figure out why they never finished constructing the roof, years later i figured out it was intentional. Good design, and it works well with the fantasy land that times sq has become. a 10 if the framework up top was clad up in something like reuters down the street

this building's definitely one of nyc's coolest. the design's really retro and tacky, but it's done in a way that really reflect its times square location very well. the alternating black and white masonry complement each other well, and the spire, while cheap-looking, really give this building a sharp look.

the white slab that sticks out of the building on the north side should go though. im just happy that it's on a side of the building that's not often looked at.
