Well, nothing is above ground anyway, so updates aren't that interesting anyway right now.

As soon as it starts rising above ground I'll treat you all to some fresh updates. :)

oliver999,
It's located between Nanjing Xilu and Yan'An GaoJia, in the same crossing as Jing An Si but diagonally from it. The plot isn't huge, so I guess it will pretty much be the tower and not much around it - wihch I like.

That render cracks me up. They didn't even try to edit out the smog, and simply stuck a blue sky in the background.

What's even funnier is that it's a snippet from a pano I took a couple of years ago--actually, there wasn't much smog at all--just used a crappy lense.

should be some meters over ground now

Mr. Alloy
August 21st, 2007, 06:40 PM
I don't understand why a developer would choose to build to 298 meters. Go two meters higher, and you'll have ten times the attention. I guess a height like 298 meters suggests to me that the developers of this tower don't want that much attention, but I can't imagine why.

UD2

building permit issues. The city may not allow a 300 meter tower in that location.

Myster E
August 21st, 2007, 09:17 PM
well why don't they loop off 50 metres off the tower, how is 2 metres going to make a differnece? Is there a large flow of air traffic going through where this tower's being built?

Gratias for that nice overview pic, zOrg.

I also had expected that Wheelock Square would stand over ground now, but at least there's some progress going on. There's a second crane, and the tower seems to be ready to get up. This construction site exists now for about 3 years, so this building could've been almost finished at best!

But other towers in Jing'an also had delay. For instance Dong Hai Plaza (supposable 217m), the grey glass tower in the background of z0rgs pic, has been on hold halfway up for a long time, and finally seems to be finished with a different design.

Maybe Wheelock Square will at last give some attention to this place of Jing'an's new skyline (especially when Huamin King Tower follows). The focus is so much on Pudong, that this relative outlying place of Shanghai is prevalently overlooked.

Because they want to build as tall as possible with out infringing upon existing policies.

and i may not be air traffic, it may be other things that we're not aware of.

heck it may even be building cost and projected demand.

people didn't just pick this number for no reasons. Especially in a business decision.

This looks to me like concrete vertical columns and core, i'll assume the floor system to be of a truss type, with corrugated steel deck and concrete. slow to start, but once typical floors begin it should rise at a steady rate, (like the ICC Hong Kong.)

Can't wait for this one to gain some elevation.!!!

there are some parks around city centers of shanghai.

like zhonghan park near dragon dream plazza.
people park around people square center
luxun park near hongkou stadium
lujiazui greenland in lujiazui area
the jingam park is near jingan tample center
even in xvjiahui, you still can find shanghai jiaotong university campus.

Yep, I visited all of them but Luxun place :D I visted Tianshan Gongyuan many mornings too since it was next to my school.

Shanghai has many little parks (not enough though) and very few big ones. It's a good model, imo. Huge parks are a waste of land and they break the urban continuum. Also, they might become a focus of crime, prostitution, etc. And they use to lack quality too because of the scale.

It is better to have many high quality little parks everywhere. I enjoyed Shanghai parks very much because they are so well kept.

When I was looking at the photos of the base, taken from street level I wondered if the base was not at a true 90 degrees at the corners, now it's confermed that it's actually a parallelogram.

this is one of my favorite towers going up worldwide at the moment, and this added yet simple aspect of this tower makes it even more interesting, when its complete the view up when standing in the plaza will have a slightly "enhanced" overhang becouse of this slight angel in the walls,

Outstanding..... thanks to whomever took the photos, (esp the top down view) and to zOrg for posting them...........

it's is hugh, btw, does this building have a core?

Of course it does, look at the overhead shot in post #78, one of the cranes is in the corner of the core, the columns on this one are massive, understandable as this one is almost 1000' high. It looks to be about 8 floors out of the ground, and moving much faster than i thought.

I'm sure the cladding will be following soon, in the same way that it is on the Trump tower in Chicago. This tower, (at 1.8 million sq. ft.) is going to be AWESOME....!!!!

Topped out?

The floors have stopped and the core is now a few floors higher. Looks like they're still working on the core.

The highest floor should be poured but there is a glass parapet that extends further above. The core would be higher than the top floor within this parapet for machinery such as lift motors etc. The core may be topped out too but not sure, work looks like it has stopped because of spring festival, a lot of construction sites close down early because it's too hard for migrant workers to get train tickets home if they all leave on the last day before the holiday.

it does look like it gets wider at the top, so it might look better eventually.

It was never on hold as far as I know, but the ground works took forever. The slowest project in Shanghai by far during those years.
When the actual tower started to rise it has gone pretty fast though. :)

I love the fact that Shanghai has so many different unique skyscrapers, googie, modern, postmodern and everything in between!

This tower will definitely look great on the skyline, especially when the cladding is finished!

Hey, Wheelock Tower looks much better now with most of the cladding on! And it might even improve with the glass parapet on top.:cheers2:

Btw. assuming 4 oversized floors at the base, I count 56 structural floors, with the started 57th upmost. And the top is also missing, so the T/O-labelling has come to early here IMO. There should be at least 20m to come, and I guess that Tower 66 is still the tallest in the neighborhood.

Furthermore, compared with the render on post #1, I see more differences than just the darker color: there are only 14 levels each between the 3 indications of the cladding now, instead of 15. And this render shows around 61 floors (maybe the upmost is fake and already part of the parapet). But I hope the given 298m still apply to the final height of the recent SWT, bringing it close to "supertalldom".:)

Excellent! Two more metres and it would be a supertall.

It looks so similar to the SWFC.

BarbaricManchurian
April 25th, 2009, 12:03 AM
That angle looks just like the SWFC, just that it stops 200m too short. The glass spine is exactly like that of SWFC's, just the cladding is slightly different.

Actually 6 supertalls around the world have a lower roof than Weelock Square...

Weelock Square - 298m (roof 274m)

- Emirates Hotel Tower (Dubai) - 305m (roof 261m)
- AT&T Corporate Center (Chicago) - 307m (roof 270m)
- New York Times Building (New York) - 319m (roof 227m)
- Burj al Arab Hotel (Dubai) - 321m (roof 210m)
- Shimao International Plaza (Shanghai) - 333m (roof 246m)
- Bank of America Tower (New York) - 366m (roof 269m)

the 'spine' is looking very good now. great tower! Shanghai should develop the area around it more, this tower would looks great with a few nice, taller towers around it.
