Before Van Oord’s work on the Palm Jumeirah was finished, the company was awarded another contract to design and build two smaller, private islands of 140,000 m3 each, in mirror image on each side of the Palm. The design- a wispy palm leaf- is the logo of the Dubai Palm Developers, which later became Nakheel, the real estate developer that has launched all of Dubai’s land reclamation projects.

Construction of the Logo Islands began in June 2003 and was completed in February 2005. Working in a confined area with the Palm still in progress presented special logistical challenges. A total of 4,400,000 m3 of sand and 1,000,000 tonnes of rock were used in the project, which includes a revetment, an underwater reef, a 270-metre-long quay wall, perched beaches and other small beaches. Access channels were dredged later to enable large yachts to reach both islands.

I've read that one of these islands is for Sh. Mohammed and the other for Sh. Hamdan. This was on Time or NG. Can't remember where, but read it a few months ago.

Local developer Zabeel Investments plans to build a resort on one of the two small islands on either side of the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah. Known as Logo Island, the estimated AED 250 million ($68 million) resort will be built on the south-western island, and will include about 50 holiday villas, a small hotel, a spa and shops. The UK’s EC Harris is the project manager. Zabeel’s other projects on the Palm include the AED 2,100 million ($571 million) Tiara Residence (MEED 11:5:07).

Which logo island is this? Assume it is the one on the left. The one on the right was supposed to have a palace of some sorts.

From the shape, it is the one on the left indeed.

^^ Obviously, the one to the right is on Sheikh's territorial waters.

There is some serious digging going on on the one on the right. Hope whatever is coming up does not obscure the view of the Burj Al Arab from my 9th floor balcony. If it is a low palace surrounded by date palms that is fine by me. It would be great if the royal yatch is berthed there.

I don't think it is cancelled. i was asking some questions at the Zabeel stand in Cityscape and they were being very coy about the development in front of Jumeirah

Construction work has slowed on at least two projects being developed by Zabeel
Properties in Dubai.

The two projects which have been affected are the Dubawi project on an island next to the Palm Jumeirah and the Tiara United Towers project on Sheikh Zayed road.

UK-based Laing O'Rourke had started work on the estimated AED1bn ($273m) Al-Dubawi resort earlier in 2008.

The resort will be built on the southwestern island and is understood to include about 50 holiday villas, a small hotel, a spa and shops.

The local Arabtec Construction was awarded the contract to build Tiara United Towers in 2006.

Zabeel Properties was unavailable for comment.

A number of schemes have slowed or have been put on hold in the emirate. Nakheel has scaled back development on all three of its Palm island projects together with Dubai Waterfront, projects have been delayed at Dubailand and Meraas is reviewing its masterplan for Jumeira Garden City (MEED 5:12:08).

This sounds like a really nice project. Anything on the right island yet?

I noticed this morning that the logo island infront of the Shorline apartments has some palm trees on it so looks like they're starting to landscape it.

Update on Logo Islands. In mid-January we were told by someone at the One & Only Royal Mirage hotel (which is owned by the Sheikh) that the Logo island in front of the hotel has been acquired by the hotel and will be used to extend the hotel accommodation.

True, but bear in mind, this is for Sheikh Mo, so if any island off the coast of Dubai is gonna be even close to perfection then it's definately going to be this one! Unfair? I suppose so, but it's the same all over.

This island is an excellent example though of what can be done when the right kind dedication and effort are applied.

looks like a pure entertainment island; amazing idea, a bit like the good old days; I can not see any bank financing this as there is no revenue generated through sales of apartments, villas etc. All the revenue comes after completion through running a night club, beach club, ressort etc.

Only if that stands for "Camera's Good, Innit?" :) Took this pic myself on the Seawings seaplane flight down the coast.

Also take a look at it on Google Earth. I measured that pool, it's about 130m long :nuts:

Private residence

So people, to summarize: There are TWO signature islands on both sides of the trunk. The one on the right (post 78) is a private residence for one of the Maktooms. The one on the left (post 79) is still barren and it will possibly be a hotel complex with possible residential units too.

Looks like some infrastructure work happening on the other Logo Island. I read somewhere that they wanted to build a cruise ship terminal here, but I dismissed that as nonsense. Maybe not?

The red boat has been present in that area for the last 6 months on and off.

I'm visiting Dubai like twice a year and every time, since 2010 I continually see this ship navigating in area between the trunk, Logo Island - West (Dubawi Island) and first frond... my guess - its kind of mechanical vessel, that is used when deepening the sea near the beaches, or reclaiming the new beaches itself, like the one near Fairmont Hotel...

Yeah, that logo island is gorgeous. How does fresh water get to this island and other utilities, underground? I love the greenery of the island, the rest of Palm Jumeirah could use some more green. :)

I cannot believe this is still paused ... Hotels are having peak activity and i'm sure they will have no problem whatsoever filling up a 5 star hotel on an island ...

people don't forget this is an island. construction logistics will be utterly painful, not to mention logistics during operation.
