SYDNEYAHOLIC March 31st, 2007, 07:39 AM BOOOOOOOOORING building. Should just densify that area of Downtown Chicago.
connected_ March 31st, 2007, 07:53 AM I'd hardly call it boring! The façade looks excellent! And um.. a building of this size WILL add density.
MDguy March 31st, 2007, 11:37 PM ^^ I agree! what's his problem?
Xander April 1st, 2007, 07:43 PM He is allowed an opinion
MDguy April 1st, 2007, 08:37 PM ^^ no one ever said he isn't allowed to. anyway, I really enjoy this building. it's nice imo
-Corey- April 1st, 2007, 09:58 PM WOW this tower looks really nice.
SYDNEYAHOLIC April 1st, 2007, 11:27 PM What I mean is that it just looks like yet another Chicago building.
It's a box with some nice cladding. That's why it's boring - it's nothing special.
XCRunner April 1st, 2007, 11:32 PM I love it! The third pic is the best, IMO.
SYDNEYAHOLIC April 1st, 2007, 11:34 PM Mind you, if this were built in Sydney I'd be over the moon, but seeing as this is Chicago it doesn't strike me as anything special - that's why I thought it was boring.
There's lots of similarish buildings like that all around the place (in different cities as well).
Sydney lacks a big solid building like that though so that's why I would be excited if it were built in Sydney. Unfortunately a slab of a skyscraper like that can't actually be built due to lack of space, fsr and height restrictions and solar access planes. Also, this building looks too shiny and this would probably infringe on Sydney's reflectivity code! But this would make it all the more exciting if it WERE built in Sydney.
Anyway, sorry for the offence I caused to some of you guys.
MDguy April 1st, 2007, 11:44 PM oh, I see. i get where you're coming from now. Thank you for clearifying that
Jules April 1st, 2007, 11:59 PM Mind you, if this were built in Sydney I'd be over the moon, but seeing as this is Chicago it doesn't strike me as anything special - that's why I thought it was boring.

Seems to me us Chicagoans just can't win, no matter what we build. Here we have a quality box, but it's too much like everything else in Chicago. Fine. When we try something different, something out of the ordinary, like the Chicago Spire for instance, what do we get? "Well that just doesn't fit with the rest of the skyline!" We just can't seem to please you guys. :)
Jasonhouse April 2nd, 2007, 12:06 AM Man, that area around IBM is really thickening up lately.
HowardL April 2nd, 2007, 01:09 AM Mind you, if this were built in Sydney I'd be over the moon, but seeing as this is Chicago it doesn't strike me as anything special - that's why I thought it was boring.

I understand what you're saying. It's not brilliant, but it's well proper filler. No masterpiece, but the detailing looks to be quite good. Reminds me a bit of something that might go up in Canary Wharf.
SYDNEYAHOLIC April 2nd, 2007, 01:35 AM I love the Chicago Spire.
Skyman April 2nd, 2007, 03:55 AM I like this tower, very cute design
Kngkyle April 3rd, 2007, 05:46 AM I like this tower, very cute design
Hmm, not sure if cute is the right word.
storms991 April 3rd, 2007, 06:39 AM ^^^ lol, I'd say its cute also
I like the cladding and sides, its just queer at the top. The round looking top ruins the *sharpness* of the building
CHIsentinel April 3rd, 2007, 10:10 PM ^^^ lol, I'd say its cute also

I think that's deliberate, as part of the design, to counter the angled aspect of the rest of the building (look at the curved corners at the base of the building and how that also counters the 90 deg. corners and I think you'll understand what I mean).
Knatterton April 3rd, 2007, 11:35 PM Nice...but nothing special
Dale April 4th, 2007, 05:12 AM If it's cute, the Japanese will like it. ;)
Let's call it Hello Kitty Plaza.
Chiman April 23rd, 2007, 03:02 AM Hi guys,
I was walking up Dearborn today. What is the building that is already 20 or 30 stories constructed due north between Kenzie and Hubbard on Dearborn? It looks like poured-in-place concrete cladded with precast and I'm not too impressed. Is it part of the 353 North Clark developement?
spyguy April 23rd, 2007, 03:16 AM ^Yes, kind of. Same developer and part of the larger River North Center. It will be a hotel tower, and the plot to the west of it will have a residential tower.
Phobos April 23rd, 2007, 03:37 AM It's another box but I like it.I'm not so sure about that white thing on the top...it seems it will ruin the building a bit.
Ralphkke April 30th, 2007, 09:44 PM Looks very nice!

I really wouldn't call this boring. But people who think it is have a valid point that the surrounding buildings are all very similar in design, shape and height.
PresidentBjork July 30th, 2007, 03:16 PM It's big, glassy and boxy, but it's big, glassy and boxy in a good way. :)
Pronaos July 30th, 2007, 07:18 PM It is very similar to the buildings around it in style and height, but the cladding and the light-blue window tint give it a modern flare.
Chad July 30th, 2007, 07:26 PM I dont understand.
Why this one is U/C while the Chicago Spire is not, when both seems to be in the same stage of construction.
i_am_hydrogen July 30th, 2007, 07:36 PM This building is much more advanced than Chicago Spire. In fact, I believe all of the caissons for this one's foundation have been poured. With respect to CS, by contrast, no foundational caissons have yet been drilled. The drilling of caissons is the event that triggers a project being moved to the u/c stage.

Good taste in the good choise of proportion, glass end to rounding the corners at the top of the building is just great!

Ted Ward November 18th, 2007, 01:52 PM This looks like a crisp smart 'well done' building and its a testimony to Chicago that it can be described as 'not exceptional.'
I must also say i like all the Chicago threads on these boards - the buildings are all interesting - and the threads are filled with knowledgeable and enthusiastic skyscraper fans.
The above photos of the crane arrival/installation is another example of the fine coverage - many thanks to all involved.

Colonel Cadillac August 21st, 2008, 09:28 PM I also wanted to comment on the facade. I've said for awhile that the blue glass schtick was getting old, like we're regressing towards 1978 or so. However, so far this is the best execution of the style as far as I'm concerned.

Alpha/S. August 26th, 2008, 04:41 AM That facade makes this building work. The blue glass look has been done countless times recently but rarely this well. Also seems to be adding a good bit of depth to the skyline.
Badgers77 August 26th, 2008, 05:33 AM I really like the way they did the retail space on this project. I love giant corner entrances to buildings.

Andy came over from Germany for a visit, he managed to find several angles and compositions which the rest of us had missed.
Andy has many compilations ( ? ) of building photos set to music. (e.g. http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=tpKwFn1uTL4 )

ThatDarnSacramentan November 9th, 2008, 09:47 PM I know this pales in comparison to everything else in Chicago, but I like it. It's modern, but it has simple shapes to it. In most cases, I hate the weird glass spirals with random spikes and angles. This is what I like most: a slight differential of a classic rectangle. It may not stand out much where it's located, but it will surely add to the general atmosphere of the city.

harryc June 29th, 2009, 03:45 AM ^^^ That's quite an impressive set there Wrabbit - The facade offers so many patterns that are always changing with the sun's angle. The white Terracotta building (Thompson bldg) with the light reflections on it (across Clark st) is currently Meserow's main bldg, they have expanded and are now on many floors of the glass box next door (ABA - aka Quaker), they plan on locating all operations in their new building - I wonder if they'll do away w moving trucks altogether.
