NEW BLOOD: The mall has attracted Japan's Hankyu Department Store and its largest home-furnishing brand, Nitori, both of which are new to Taiwan

Advertising Hoping to steal some of the limelight from fashion outlet-packed Taipei, the Dream Mall (夢時代購物中心) in Kaohsiung launched its trial operations yesterday, with a mega-sized shopping space and a Hello Kitty-themed Ferris wheel.
The new shopping mall is the nation's largest, with a floor space of 121,000 ping (399,300m2), the sixth-largest in Asia and the 11th largest in the world.

The mall rises nine stories and has three basement levels and has roped in Japan's Hankyu Department Store; Japan's largest lifestyle and home-furnishing brand, Nitori; the UK's Marks & Spencer; and a sub-zero temperature playground introduced from Japan so subtropical Taiwanese can experience a winter wonderland.

All of these retailers will make their Taiwan debut at the Dream Mall.

However, Hankyu Department Store, Marks & Spencer and Nitori will not open their doors for business until May 12, when a grand opening ceremony is scheduled.

Dream Mall president Paul Chang (張國光) said nearly 90 percent of its stores would participate in the trial operations and he expected revenues for the remaining nine months this year to hit NT$9 billion (US$270 million) and NT$12 billion next year.

Chang predicted that the mall, which took an investment of NT$18.5 billion, would break even within three years and start pulling in profits in ten years.

Another much-anticipated feature is the mall's NT$200 million rooftop Ferris wheel, whose 36 carts are painted with Sanrio Co's famous cartoon figures, including Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll Dog and Badtz-Maru penguin.

The firm said it is the only Ferris wheel in Taiwan with a view of the ocean.

Taipei's Miramar Entertainment Park (美麗華百樂園) in Dazhi District also banks on its rooftop 48-cart Ferris wheel, the second-largest in the world after the wheel atop the Hip Five shopping center in Osaka, Japan, as a draw for those curious to get a bird's eye view of the greater Taipei area.

Statistics show that Kaohsiung's department store and shopping mall market is worth about NT$22 billion per annum. Hanshin Department Store takes the lion's share with sales of NT$10 billion a year.

Saw the report on CTI News. Where is it located? Near Kaohsiung International Airport? Siaogang? Does the MRT have a station there? I like the slanted glass facade and domineering appearance with just shops and more shops everywhere.

How does Kaohsiung sustain so many department stores for a city of a million or so right? I ask because when I was at FE21 at Sanduo, it was very very quiet.:)

The biggest mall in Singapore only provides probably around 1.04 million square feet of space with not so interesting shops and no famous Japanese department stores.

Taiwan's located in South-East Asia? Since when?

For Taipei Times to make such a mistake...

Well it's not the first that the Taiwanese media associated Taiwan with SEA, and I admitt Taiwan is geographically in SEA. Taiwan is humid and hot, and not far away from the Philippens.

Taiwan is in SEA is not a big news.
Tropic of Cancer runs through Taiwan in case u don't know.
Well, even some ppl also say that the northern part of Taiwan is in East Asia and the southern part of Taiwan is in SEA.
Since Kaohsiung is in South Taiwan and below the Tropic of Cancer, it's in SEA?

One interesting example is China.
As a country, China is in East Asia, but HK, Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi are often specified as part of SEA. (Xinjiang,Tibet, and Inner-Mongolia are in Central Asia etc)

Politically and culturally, Taiwan is East Asian.

Geographically, Taiwan is indeed Southeast Asian.

Amazing!
How does Kaohsiung sustain so many department stores for a city of a million or so right?

I thought the same thing. Kaohsiung has many great department stores and shopping malls even now. Among them, it seems to me Hansin Department Store is the most popular (affilate store with Hanshin Department Store in Osaka), but Isetan in Kaohsiung (yup, the prime department store in Tokyo) is deserted, oddly enough.

Which part of Kaohsiung is it at? Is it worth taking the train down from Taipei?

The mall, which is located next to Kaohsiung Harbor and within a 10-minute drive from the city's downtown, expects to divert shoppers from the city's smaller retailers, including Hanshin Department Store (漢神百貨), Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store (新光三越) and the FE21 Mega shopping center (高雄大遠百), Kao said.

Ha, that's a good point. I've never seen any malls outside Taiwan that have a ferris wheel on top.

I thought that the ferris wheel at Dream Mall was the biggest?

I've heard from a Taiwanese variety show that apparently JanFuShan's was the biggest in Taiwan.

1. JanFuShan
2. Dream Mall
3. Miramar

Is that the correct order?
