Badshahi Mosque - Lahore, Pakistan

The Imperial or the Badshahi Mosque is across the courtyard from Alamgiri Gate of the Lahore Fort. The Mosque which is made up entirely of red sand-stone was built by Emperor Aurangzeb, the last of the great Mughals, in a record time of two and-a-half years. Its construction was completed by 1674 AD.

It has a beautiful gate-way which measures 21.33 metres in length and a courtyard that measures 161.5 x 160.6 metres and is said to be the largest mosque courtyard in the world for outdoor prayers. The marble domes cover seven prayer chambers. Four lofty minarets stand at the four corners of the mosque, each with an outer circumference of 20 metres, soaring up to 54 metres.

In the chambers above the Gate of the mosque, are housed relics attributed to the Holy Prophet of Islam Peace be upon him, his daughter and his son-in-law and are said to have been brought to the sub-continent by Amir Taimur.

Within the Mosque almost all the colours have been used for painting the floral designs but the overall effect remains one of sobriety, piousness and simplicity.

From close up the detail on this building makes it absolutely stunning. From a distance, however, it's very disappointing. Overall I'd rate this as a 6.5.

Are you sure about this. because Prophet's Mosque in Medina, Saudia Arabia is considered as the "2nd" largest mosque in the world after the Great Mosque in Mecca, Saudia Arabia. BTW, Prophet's Mosque has expanded massively in last 7-8 yrs to accomodate pilgrims & its capacity is only 2nd to Great Mosque in Mecca.

Built in 1673 by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, this mosque is the second largest mosque in Pakistan and can accomodate 60,000 worshippers.

Architecturally, it is similar to the Jama Mosque in Delhi, India, which was constructed by Aurangzeb's father, the emperor Shah Jehan. Badshahi mosque is similar in planning and is larger in size to the Jama Mosque, being a refinement on its design.

Some historical context, this mosque was made during the period the Rennaissance was going on in Europe. In its contemporary period in Europe, the Baroque style was common in buildings. Also, the St. Paul's cathedral in London was also made during this time period.
